EXCERPT:
I’m draining my beer when suddenly this short beautiful, almost pixie-like woman appears next to me after slipping through the crowd.
When she raises her hand, Debra appears. “Hey, little bits, what can I get you?”
“Two beers and a hard cider,” she yells over the crowd.
Debra heads off, and the woman looks around at the patrons in the bar. She’s stunning. Blond hair with some dark pieces throughout, brown eyes that look soft. She’s maybe all of five feet tall, but I can tell she’s full of attitude. I must’ve been staring long enough, because she turns to me and smiles.
That smile.
The one I see way too often from interested women, and thanks to this foul, pissed-off mood, I shake my head, letting her know right away there’s not a chance in hell. “Not interested.”
She laughs once and shakes her head. “Well, I wasn’t offering.”
“I know that look.”
“Clearly you don’t.” I go to drink, needing something to do so I don’t say anything else that could end with me getting hit with a bottle, but it’s empty. Great.
I place it on the bar and signal to Debra, hoping she’ll bring me a refill, since clearly bingo goes for hours.
Because I don’t have said distraction, I counter her argument. “I do know it, and I’m not interested in anything.”
She turns her body to face me, leaning against the bar. “Listen, I don’t know what look you think I was giving. I was being nice. I smiled. That’s all.”
I sigh. “If you say so.”
“I do.”
At least there’s that. We are both very clearly aware of the situation. “Good, so we’re in agreement, neither of us is interested.” Still, I don’t want to be a total dick, so I add, “You’re beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t have any interest in dating or whatever you women are looking for nowadays.”
At that, she laughs deeper, head falling back, and I swear my stomach drops. She’s more than beautiful, and if I were any other man on any other day, I would absolutely be interested.
However, it seems the second half of my speech didn’t mollify anything. She definitely wants to hit me with something.
“Look, I don’t know who you are or what you think, but I promise, I don’t date losers—and I sure as hell don’t fuck new guys who are here for a few months to play cowboy. So I take back my kind smile, and may you have the day you deserve.”
