Synopsis

I met Sarah Kate Erickson when I was twenty-one years old. I was lucky enough to keep her for seven years before a tragic accident stole her from me. She didn’t die, but sometimes I think it would have been easier if she had.

I lived in a haze for those four years after the accident. Catering to her every need, even though she hated the very sight of my face. I tried to hold on to her and the future that we were supposed to build together. But you can’t hold on to someone that doesn’t exist anymore.

It wasn’t until I met Jesse Addison, a barista at the local coffee shop, that I realized I didn’t just lose Sarah that tragic night, I lost myself as well. Jesse taught me how to let go of the past and learn to love again. But what happens when your past haunts your present and the woman you used to love refuses to accept the woman you can’t live without?

Review

Wow.  I think Aly Martinez is a new writer on the scene and I was literally blown away after reading Changing Course.  It was completely different than any other book I have encountered lately.  I was gripped from page one; turning the pages, sometimes laughing, heart pounding, shedding a few tears now and then.  This book ran the entire gamut of emotions for me.

Ok, Changing Course was A LOT to take in.  Brett meets Sarah at the tender age of twenty-one.  They fall head over heels in love.  The kind of love that you think will last a lifetime.  Only it doesn’t.  Years later and Sarah has a horrific accident and Brett loses her, but not like you think.  Flash forward 4 years later and Brett meets Jess.  She is the exact opposite of his long lost Sarah, but Brett cannot stay away from her, but can he move on from Sarah and the memory of the person she used to be so that he can move forward with Jesse?  I know what you are thinking but it isn’t!  I promise!  No love triangle!  Trust me!

Oh my, I loved the characters in this book.  They were so loveable and real to me.  Lets start with Brett.

Brett is just an incredibly tortured man.  He lost the love the of his life and has been celibate for the last 4 years, not even contemplating moving on with his life.  There is a lot to love about him.  He smart, honest, sexy, and loyal.  Too loyal, if you ask me, but you have to respect a man that honors his vows; for better or worse.  And believe me, Sarah is definitely worse, like a lot.  Jesse is the first woman to peek his interest since Sarah.

“Jesse does things to me.  She makes me feel like myself again for the first time since I lost Sarah.”

I found myself rooting for him so hard.  He deserves to be happy after all that he has suffered and who better to give him that than sweet, shy, and kind Jesse; the exact opposite of Sarah.  Jesse may seem meek, but I have to commend her on sticking around, fighting for her man, and giving Brett a chance.  Their relationship had me on pins and needles.  The tension was high all on accounts.  And the sexual tension was amazing and super sexy!

“Jesus Jess you taste so fucking good.  I knew you would be sweet, but I’m never going to get enough of this.”

I could go on and on about how much I loved this book but I am really afraid to give too much away and I really hate spoilers.  Just know that this book was incredibly well written, hella sexy, with a heaping ton of angst; exactly to my taste.
