REVIEW:

I’ve been an enormous fan of Kate Canterbary’s since she blessed this romance reader with her first novel. Kate writes what I like to call smart-girl smut. Beyond being simply well-written, her novels are thoughtful, thought-provoking, intelligently humorous stories within a steamy romance. They’re always exceptional, original, with layers of emotion and interesting side characters who elevate the whole of the story to a truly special reading experience. If you’re not already reading Kate Canterbary’s work, you simply must. She pens the kind of not-to-be-missed love stories that every romantic fiction reader needs in their lives.

Fans of Canterbary’s Walsh Family series will definitely recall Gigi, an important side character in that series. The Magnolia Chronicles: Adventures in Modern Dating is her story, and although it’s not necessary to read any of the Walsh series books to enjoy this standalone, you’re truly missing out on a one-of-a-kind series of fabulous contemporary romances if you haven’t. If you can’t start a binge-read of that series immediately, I’d implore you to find a way to do it anyway, or at the very least, get it on your to-be-read list.

I don’t want to spoil a single thing about this story. So I’m just going to say that it was uproariously and, at times, outrageously funny, and I found myself laughing audibly throughout this book. This author’s fantastic sense of humor is an addictive blend of dry wit, New England grit and sarcasm swirled with a bit of realism, circumstance and/or relatability. The banter alone is worth the price of the book—spot-on, perfectly timed and expertly executed, it didn’t matter who Magnolia was bantering with, it a furiously funny back-and-forth exchange akin to a sporting event.

Canterbary takes readers through the trials and tribulations of Magnolia’s year-long dating immersion experiment with the kind of detail that made me want to put my Kindle down—momentarily, of course—seek out my husband and thank him for marrying me all those years ago. I didn’t actually do this, but a couple dozen times while reading this book, I really wanted to. That’s the thing about this story, it’s so relatable, even to old married folk like me. This book didn’t simply entertain and amuse me, I was engulfed in it for an entire day, taking up all of my time and attention, and I was glad for it. Delicious in every sense of the word, The Magnolia Chronicles captivated me as it played out in my mind like an Oscar-nominated romantic comedy does on the big screen.

I was completely lost in Magnolia’s chronicles. Totally engaged, completely absorbed and all in, I was utterly charmed from cover-to-cover as I tried to restrain myself because I didn’t want to merely devour this book, I wanted the chance to revel in Magnolia’s experiences. Refreshing, clever, heartwarming and sexy, this story made my heart—and my head—happy on every single level. I can’t recommend this book—this author—highly enough. Another outstanding story from the brilliant Kate Canterbary, The Magnolia Chronicles: Adventures in Modern Dating gets five smooches from me!

~SOLO~

“I’m not anyone’s savior, Orley. Don’t get that confused.”

She sighed again and pushed herself up off the floor. “I’m not confused. I’m incredibly lucky.” She sounded like she felt anything but lucky. “I want to do something nice for you. I have limited options, but if you want to come next door for dinner one night, Noble and I would love to have you.” She waved a hand around my kitchen, “I may have noticed you don’t keep much of anything edible on hand when I was looking for the coffee.”

Guiltily, I glanced at the abandoned bag of tater tots on the couch. “I’m on the go a lot. I usually just grab something I can eat on the run. Plus, I can’t cook.” My mom was a great cook, though, or she had been at one point. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a home-cooked meal. “Do you cook?” She was so young, it was hard to picture her slaving over a hot stove on the regular.

Orley nodded. “Sure. I mostly throw stuff together geared to the palate of a toddler, but I’m sure I can figure out something adult appropriate for one night. I really owe you more than I can ever repay. Being a good neighbor is the least I can do.”

I did a mental rundown of my week trying to find a hole where I could fit her in. Not for the first time a wave of exhaustion washed over me when I realized how every hour of my days were packed. It shouldn’t be nearly impossible to eke out a night for something as easy as dinner. Finally deciding I was just going to have to skip a training session or get up even earlier to work on school work, I told Orley I would be over on Wednesday night.

She nodded at me and took a step forward. I went to move out of the way so she could get out of the small space without feeling crowded, but she caught me completely off guard when she walked right up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist. I felt her soft breath against the base of my throat and her soft hair brush against the bottom of my chin. I reflexively put an arm around her shoulders and returned her embrace. If she tilted her head back just a little, there wasn’t enough self-control in the world for me to keep my mouth off of hers. I would kiss the shit out of her, even though I knew it was the last thing she needed.

“I’ve never had anyone like you in my life, Solo. You terrify me.” She hugged me hard enough I had to bite my tongue to keep the yelp of pain from my jacked-up ribs at bay.

“That street goes both ways, Orley. I’ve never met anyone like you either.” I never thought I would to be honest.

She let me go and took a deep breath. She was halfway across the room when I realized something. “Hey, what about you. You never told me your last name.”

She stopped by the door, her back to me. For a minute I thought she didn’t hear me, but then she pulled the door open and called softly, “I’ll see you on Wednesday night.”

She slipped out the door without another word, leaving me with one more piece of a puzzle I was determined to put together. Figuring out my pretty neighbor was going to have to wait. I still needed to shower and drive out to see my mom. My obligations were never-ending and usually I liked being busy enough I didn’t have to think about much of anything. Lately, I found myself resenting every minute that took my attention away from the mysterious redhead I couldn’t stop thinking about.

REVIEW:

I adore Jay Crownover’s writing, I love her characters and her stories, I love how she makes me feel and think. She draws me into her characters’ struggle with edgy, gritty, deeply emotional stories intermingled amid a steamy, hard-fought romance. Her stories consume me, her characters stay with me, and I look forward to a new story from Jay with kid-in-a-candy-store anticipation. I know she’s going to wreck me in the best way, and while I may not walk away from the experience unscathed, I will be satisfied, fulfilled and hungry for more.

Downfall is a complete standalone, and while set in the same world as The Point series, Jay Crownover has taken great care to ensure that this book will not spoil those books and that it can truly stand on its own. Sexy, suspenseful and heartfelt emotion, Downfall was an engrossing story about right triumphing over wrong—even if the good guys had to do a little bad along the way.

Solomon ‘Solo’ Sanders—aptly nicknamed for the loner he was—was the quintessential Crownover hero. Tattooed, rugged, rough-around-the-edges and blunt, he was a bad boy with a heart of gold from the wrong side of the tracks. He had his limits, though, and his morals, an unwavering sense of justice and right versus wrong usually won out. He did test those boundaries, and he also wasn’t averse to using his fists to make his point. Solo’s plate was full caring for everyone around him, so it’s not really surprising that he had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, especially where Orley was concerned. Their connection was instant, buzzing and electric from the start, the kind of chemistry that is impossible not to act on. In Orley and her sweet daughter, Noble, Solo found things he didn’t even realize he’d been missing or even wanting.

Orley Vincent, a young single mom from the right side of the tracks, was on the run and hiding in plain sight in the one place she thinks her past won’t think to look for her. The problem was that it was obvious to everyone that she didn’t fit in. But there, amongst the perceived dregs of society, on those mean, unforgiving streets of the city, she learns her life’s most valuable lessons. Dear Vishous,

First of all, thank you for doing this.  I need another perspective.  I am a 27 year old woman, about fifteen months out of a five year relationship.  I started dating a guy about two months ago.  I’ll call him “Evan.”  We met on Match.com.  We both workout.  We like a good time out at the clubs and the bars.  We’re both Sox fans.  He’s funny and he’s been good about keeping in touch when he travels frequently for work.

My problem is this.  He told me he was twenty-eight.  A week or so ago, when we were playing pool at our local, he told me to snag his wallet and pay for the next round at the bar.  While I was getting money out, I saw his driver’s license.  It said he’s thirty-six and the address listed was in a different area of the city than he told me he lives in. I got the drinks and put his wallet back in his pocket, and tried not to think about it.

But I can’t shake the idea he lied, and it’s causing me to obsess about things that are probably no big deal.  Like, he only comes to stay at my place.  I’ve never been to his apartment, and when I asked about this, he said he has two roommates who get on his nerves and he prefers the break he gets when he sleeps at my apartment.  And I’ve introduced him to my friends, but he’s never offered to do the same.  At first, I was psyched because my ex never wanted to hang with my people.  But now?  I guess I’m uneasy and looking for shadows everywhere.

I don’t care how old he is, and I know that some times folks on Match fudge their age to make them more attractive.  And maybe it’s just an old license.  I don’t want to ruin a good thing by looking like I’m second guessing him about stuff that only appears iffy and for which there is a reasonable explanation.

Please advise,

Vishous:  Here’s what you need to do.  Go to your local Stahp ‘n Shahp and get some Sweet Baby Ray’s  BBQ.  Then get a good knife.  After you slice his b*lls off, marinate them and then pan fry ‘em.  Serve them to him hot and spicy and-

Mary:  Okaaaaaaay.  Let’s just all take a deep breath here.

V:  I know, because the BBQ sauce smells great, right?

Mary:  Ah, no.  It’s because we should not settle this type of conflict through bodily harm.

V:  Whatever, that lying sack of sh*t with the fake Match profile doesn’t deserve a set of nuts.  S’all I’m sayin’.

Mary:  I think we’ve heard your point of view loud and clear.  And now, I’d like to offer a more nuanced opinion.  On The Fence, it’s clear that there are some reasons to be concerned about this guy.  One of the things that I tell people in my practice is to always trust your instincts.  As much as you want to believe the best-

V:  Fine.  No BBQ sauce, then.  Just slice, dice and toss ‘em in the pan.  He doesn’t deserve Sweet Baby Ray’s.

Mary:  …………….

V:  What.  Oh, come on, don’t look at me like that.

Mary:  I’ve never actually said this before to someone, but why don’t you light up a cigarette and take a few deep drags.

V:  I thought you’d never ask.

Mary:  Anyway, On The Fence, my suggestion is that you have a frank, face-to-face conversation with “Evan.”  Share your concerns calmly and succinctly.  See what his answers are.  Based on how he responds, you should be able to tell a lot.  Is he listening to you and taking you seriously?  Is he offering to have you stay over at his place?  Or is he defensive and turning everything back on you-

V:  And his Red Sox card is revoked.  He has to root for the Yankees now.

Mary:  -in a way that makes you uncomfortable?  At the end of the day, you deserve to be in a relationship with someone who’s as honest as you are and treats you the way you’re treating them.

V:  I have to agree with Mary on this one.  Even though you’re a human, being with a lying sack of sh*t is whack.

Mary:  Remember, your physical safety comes first, and fast on its heels is your emotional health.  Please do not sacrifice your happiness just because you are hoping that “Evan” is the one-

V:  I think you’re going to find out he’s got a wife and kids and he’s playing you.  Which brings us back to my solution to the problem-

Mary: -and let us know how it goes, please.  Best of luck!

V:  F**k him!  Go get a real man- and that skillet.

“I like it when you call me Griffin.” His gaze settled on my mouth, and my heart sped up. I recognized that look in his eyes. It was the exact same look he’d had before he’d kissed me in Vegas. It might have been seven years ago, but when a man looks at your lips like he wants to explore every inch of them without stopping for air, you don’t forget it.

Before I had the chance to say something smart in response, he leaned in, his large frame crowding mine.

My traitorous eyelids fluttered shut. I willed them to open, but they refused to obey.

There was less than a moment’s hesitation, and then his lips were brushing mine.

If he’d had any reservations for that split second before our mouths met, they were nowhere to be found now. His hand fisted my hair, his fingertips on my scalp eliciting a moan that came from somewhere deep within me.

I was lost in the smell of him wrapped around me; the earthy scent that was all Griff combined with the heady feel of his hands in my hair caused every nerve ending in my body to come alive.

I moaned again as his hands traveled down my neck, his body pressing close into mine.

There were kisses, and then there was this.

This wasn’t a kiss, but a total melting of one body into another, and for a fleeting moment, I wanted to drown in the way it felt to have this man worshipping my mouth, his hands desperate to touch more of me but content to take what he could get in a hotel lounge.

“What did I tell you about lurking around my place, Skinner? I don’t fucking like it.” The guy’s voice was a low growl. Intimidating without even trying. “I don’t fucking like you.”

Out of habit, I reached back and covered Noble’s ears with my hands. She wasn’t new to foul language, but I didn’t need her repeating this stranger’s garbage words, which she absolutely would at the most inopportune moment.

My eyes widened as he shook the lurker hard enough to snap his head back and forth comically. The smaller man whimpered and clutched at the hands locked on the front of his dirty coat.

“Let me go, Solo. I was just having some fun. She’s a prissy bitch. You’ve seen her walking around here like her shit don’t stink.” The pleading was wasted. The larger man was clearly unmoved.

The new arrival’s massive arms tensed and flexed as he practically threw the other man on the ground. I noticed he was dressed in nothing more than a dark t-shirt even though it was chilly outside. The short sleeves showed off more than his impressive build. In the faded street lights, I could hardly make out the designs that were inked over almost every visible inch of skin. That wasn’t an uncommon look in this neighborhood. Gang tattoos, prison tattoos, and general outsiders who called these streets home tended to rock some serious ink, but this guy’s looked more deliberate and artistic than a simple statement piece.

As soon as my attacker was back on the ground, the bigger guy stepped forward. I reflexively cringed as he lowered his big, booted foot down on the other man’s unprotected private parts. A wail of agony shrieked through the air, and I realized belatedly I should be hauling ass for my apartment, not standing around waiting to see how this brutal display of street justice played out.

I clutched Noble’s hand in mine and briskly jogged the last few yards to my apartment building. I lifted Noble over the sleeping homeless man and hustled up the five flights of stairs to our floor. The elevator had been broken since before we’d moved in, not that I would dare let either of us get trapped in a small place with anyone from this complex.

I was a panting, quaking mess when I finally slammed the door. I dropped to my knees and pulled my daughter into my arms, covering her tear-streaked face in kisses and whispering soothing words over and over again.

There was no way this could be our new normal.

But it was.

Noble deserved so much better than this.

I sighed, pushing her hair off her precious face. “You know what, sweets?” She blinked big, watery blue eyes at me and shook her head. “I think we both need cake.”

She nodded and cuddled close to me.

It wouldn’t occur to me until much later that I hadn’t bothered to shout a thank you or shown any appreciation at all to my savior. I had no clue if he was any better than the scumbag who had grabbed me, but he had at least kept my daughter safe, so I owed him, even if he was one of countless things in this forever dark place that scared the life out of me.

People didn’t help other people in this neighborhood… but he had stopped and helped me, whether his intentions were altruistic or not.

And I owed him… well… at the very least, more than a piece of cake.
