Keep Her Safe by K.A. Tucker Review

4.5 Smooches

Synopsis

Noah Marshall has had a privileged life thanks to his mother, the highly decorated chief of the Austin Police Department. But all that changes the night she reveals a skeleton that’s been rattling in her closet for years: she doesn’t deserve her commendations or her medals—in fact, she deserves to be locked behind bars for what she did to a fellow officer to save her own reputation. When she finally succumbs to the guilt of destroying an innocent family’s life, she leaves Noah alone to carry the burden of this shocking secret, which she makes him vow never to share.

Gracie Reynolds wasn’t born into trailer park life, but after ten years of learning how to survive in The Hollow, it’s all she knows anymore. At least here people don’t care that she is a byproduct of a white mother and a black father. And they certainly don’t care that her dad was a corrupt Austin cop. Here, she and her mother can almost forget the shame he brought upon them…until a man who clearly doesn’t belong shows up on her doorstep one night, asking questions.

Together, Noah and Gracie set out to uncover the truth about the Austin police department’s dark and messy past—but the scandal they uncover is bigger than they bargained for, and goes far higher up than they ever imagined.

Review

Whoa. What did I just read? K.A. Tucker just gave us an intense suspenseful ride. I was hooked from the start. With each paged I turned I was attempting to figure out what the next twist would be and most of the time I was completely surprised.

I have always been a big fan of K.A. Tucker’s writing style. She has an amazing way with words and each one seems so intentional and purposeful. I have been reading her for years and as she grows as a writer I continue to fall in love with her stories. Noah and Gracie’s intense story captivated me and stole away all my attention from all the tasks I was supposed to be doing. I loved them and the mystery they find themselves wrapped up in.

He didn’t want to be bad. He just didn’t have a choice…

Sean has done things in life. Bad things. And he’s paid the price. All he wants now is to make up for his past by doing good in the present. And no one deserves more good than Shay. Bad For You by J. Daniels Review

5 Smooches

Synopsis

He didn’t want to be bad. He just didn’t have a choice…

Shayla Perkins isn’t the kind of girl who makes the same mistake twice, especially when it comes to Sean “Stitch” Molina. So when he gives her the world’s biggest rejection, that’s it–she’s done. Until the sexy, silent, unavailable Sean makes Shay a very personal offer. Of course, it still doesn’t mean he’s interested in her. Or does it?

Review

Let’s start this review by saying this as a fact: Bad For You is J. Daniel’s BEST BOOK YET. There I said it.

I have been eagerly awaiting Shayla and Stitch’s story since I got a touch of it in HIt The Spot. It was clear from the teases we got that this would be an angsty hard romance but still, I was unprepared for the depth of emotion this story brought out in me. I am torn between gushing over every well thought out and planned detail in this book and keeping my lips shut so you, the reader, can discover all the details that J. Daniels meticulously laid out. Bad For You is incredibly well written. She mixed tenderness, with heat, heart, and a dose of soul-crushing angst (not so much you won’t recover but Sean’s story will have you tearing up in parts).

There were so many hits in this novel for me I cannot even list them all without the review feeling too gushy. I adored how she mixed in pop culture, Snapchat. I fell hard for Stitch, he was so much more than I could have ever imagined. Shayla’s determination had me rooting for her from the start. These were two characters determined to get what they wanted in this life, even if that meant sacrificing in order to achieve it. Neither had it easy but both worked hard and deserved their HEA so so so much.

Bad For You was addicting in the best way possible. I yearn for more. I have been a longtime fan of the author but I can honestly say I am so proud of the depth and heart she put into this story.

Under the Stars

All around us was darkness and night…

I’m not a hero. I’m a survivor.

I had one way out, and I took it.

Now all I want is peace,

A place to pick up the pieces and start over.

But she wants justice.

Names on a list, faces in the crowd.

I vowed to help her, but it’s taking us back to the demons.

Until he appeared.

I thought he died in the fight.

I was wrong.

He’s here.

Stronger, more powerful… Sexier.

And dangerous.

The boy I loved is now the one man we have to fear most.

When he tried to save me, he had no power.

Now everything has changed, and he’ll never stop until I’m his.

EXCERPT:

“I think we should establish some ground rules,” I announce, as we drive along the curving ocean road. Palm trees are swaying, the ocean is glittering aquamarine blue, and it’s all so gorgeous and romantic, I need to cling to some semblance of professionalism.

Max groans. “Do we have to?”

“Yes,” I say firmly. “We’re pretending to be in a relationship, so things could get . . .”

Hot . . . Tempting . . .

“Complicated,” I finally decide.

“OK.” Max sounds amused. “What did you have in mind?”

“No touching below the waist,” I say. “No PDA except holding hands and quick kisses. No tongue. And no talking about our imaginary sex life.”

I’m a little too hot and bothered just imagining we have an imaginary sex life.

“Fine.” Max grins. “I promise not to ravish you in front of my entire family.”

EXCERPT

“I still can’t believe how fast all you guys fell for your women. You. Andrew. Jason.” I
took a shot of vodka, and poured us both another one. “Not a single one of you
were into the whole relationship thing at all, and then bam! You’ve got eyes
for only one woman and a possessive streak a mile wide when it comes to her.”

Ryan took the vodka from me and gulped it down, shrugging his shoulders. “When you meet
the one, you’ll know. Just don’t make the same mistake that I did with Tamara
and let her get away from you.”

“That’s another thing all three of you have in common.” I chuckled and shook my head.
“I’m not the kind of guy to fall head over heels for a woman at first sight
like you guys did. But if hell froze over”—I paused to glare at Ryan as he
burst into a fit of laughter—“and I get all riled up over some chick I barely
know, I won’t make the same mistake you all did. No walking away from her, even
if I think she belongs to someone else like Andrew did with Josie. No letting
her run from me because she thinks I’m a douchebag who hits on a woman all
night long, only to get up close and personal with some other chick while she’s
in the bathroom, like what happened with Jason and Cee-Cee. And I sure as shit
won’t let her sneak out on me the morning after like you did with Tamara. I’ll
exhaust the hell out of her so leaving me is the last thing on her mind.”

We reversed roles, and it was Ryan who was glaring at my reminder of how he’d fucked up
with Tamara and lost contact with her for months. Then he narrowed his eyes at
me, and a smug grin tilted his lips. I shifted in my seat, uncomfortable with
how pleased he suddenly looked.

“What?” I asked sharply, and the limo got quiet as Jason’s childhood friends stopped talking
and turned to look at Ryan and me.

“Nothing.” His grin turned into a full-fledged, shit-eating grin.

“Bullshit, dude. What the fuck’s up with you? You went from being totally pissed at me to
grinning like you know something I don’t. Don’t be a douche. Fill me in on the
secret.”

“Karma, man. She’s a bitch,” he chuckled.

“You’re gonna have to do better than that,” I growled.

“That’s the second time I’ve heard you say that hell would have to freeze over for you to
fall for a woman. And now you’ve paired it with bragging about how you’d handle
it better than we all did.”

“Dude,” one of Jason’s friends drawled. “Talk about tempting fate. You’ve got to have brass
balls to put shit like that out in the universe and think it’s not gonna come
back to bite you in the ass.”

Hockey players tended to be a superstitious lot, but I hadn’t expected the wealthy,
preppy guys Jason grew up with to believe in stuff like karma. Not that I grew
up poor—my parents did very well for themselves, but they weren’t in the same
league as Jason’s family and their closest friends.

“It is,” Ryan agreed. “And I’m going to enjoy every second of watching you squirm when
it happens.”

Don’t Go by Alexa Riley Review

4 SMOOCHES!

SYNOPSIS:

CEO Henry Osbourne has only ever desired one woman—the one who got away. New York Times and #1 ebook bestselling author Alexa Riley returns with Don’t Go , a virgin-hero insta-love contemporary romance in the For You series

I’ve spent the past ten years convincing myself that what I felt for her was teenage infatuation. That love so consuming couldn’t be real. Then everything went to shit, and in an instant, she was gone.

Kory Summers knew returning to New York meant running into Henry. The way her heartbeat picked up at just the thought was nervousness—not anticipation. Oh, no. She never expected to find him on her doorstep looking as handsome as ever.

She’s mine. She always has been. I’ve waited this long for her…but time’s up. I’ll use all my power, all my connections, to convince her she’s the one.

Kory ran from a boy, but a man of power and persuasion now stands in his place.

REVIEW:

There’s no point beating around the bush here, so I’m just going put it out there—one of my favorite guilty pleasure pastimes is curling up with smutty, insta-love novellas. Those wholly unrealistic little gems about the over-the-top, obsessed, all-alpha male who stops at nothing—and I mean nothing—to claim the virgin of his dreams. Are these stories an accurate depiction of real-life romance? No! Of course not, but that’s part of what makes them so deliciously fun and entertaining.

Fantasy-based escapism reading is just that – a fantastical story built on a foundation of improbable circumstances, most likely involving some wild scenario, resulting in a sugary sweet insta-love story that ends in steamy sex. When I’m in the mood to get lost in a story like this, Alexa Riley is who I reach for first. They are the reigning queens of the trope, the mistresses of this madness, the grand dames of dirty, and believe me, they do one heck of a justice to the smutty novella genre.

Don’t Go is part of their For You series, a spin-off of their For Her series of full-length novels. I’ve read—and loved—them all, and I’ve been as anxious as one of their virgin heroines staring down the crazed, panting alpha hero for the first time waiting for the billionaire son of the Everything for Her couple who started this whole series, Henry Osbourne’s story. A super-fast read, this book was a tooth-achingly sweet and fanning-myself sexy way to kill an hour that left me with a smile on my face. Four smooches from me for Don’t Go by Alexa Riley!

Living Out Loud by Staci Hart Review

5 Smooches

Synopsis

When Annie Daschel arrives in New York City, the only thing she can control is her list.

Not her father’s death or the loss of her home. Not the hole in her heart or the defective valve that’s dictated so much of her life. But she can put pen to paper to make a list of all the ways she can live out loud, just like her dad would have wanted.

See the city from the top of the Empire State Building: Check.
Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check.
Stand in the middle of Times Square: Check.
Get a job at Wasted Words: Check.

Two things not on her list: Greg Brandon and Will Bailey. And just like that, she finds herself caught in the middle of something she can’t find her way out of, with no clear answers and no rules.

List or no list, she realizes she can’t control anything at all, not even her heart.

Not the decisions it makes, and not the moment it stops.

*Standalone contemporary romance Inspired by Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.*

Review

Who else is excited to get back to the Wasted Words world? I have missed this crew of hip and fun New Yorkers! Living Out Loud is the another complete standalone in the Wasted Words world and is yet another hit in my opinion.

Annie has always had a loving and supportive family and yet she has lived a tragic and sheltered life. Now she is living in the big city for the first time and is determined to cross some things off her list of things she has never done. Step one . . .get a job. This first giant leap into adulthood lands her at Wasted Words and on Greg’s radar. Greg is instantly attracted to her but knows he is too old for her and she is too innocent for him, and yet, he can’t stand sitting by watching her spread her wings with someone else.

Greg was such an amazing leading man HE was selfless and patient. His devotion never wavered and he gave Annie the time she needed to learn what she needs and wants. Annie’s journey throughout this story is one of self-discovery. She is growing up and maturing and at the same time learning to let go of the preconceived notions of what she thinks she wants. Her story isn’t easy but it one worth telling and one definitely worth reading. Join these two on their journey to finding love and happiness.

Excerpt

“This is yours?” I asked in awe, trailing my fingers over the shiny, black hood of a newer-model Ford pickup truck.

He’d lifted it and put huge tires on it, and while the top was spotless, there was a thin layer of mud covering the running boards, letting me know that it didn’t stay locked away in his garage waiting for a Chicago snow. It actually got used—and in places that weren’t covered in asphalt. My Southern heart, which had been relocated to the Midwest all those years ago, quaked in its stunning presence.

He stared at me, his arms crossed over his chest, the muscles of his neck straining beneath a gray henley, but not because he was stressed or upset, but rather because his muscles were so thick and defined that they were always straining.

He answered with a simple, “Babe.”

I swung my hand to the Escalade parked in the driveway. “What about the SUV?”

Twirling the keys on his finger, he walked over to me. “It’s not a crime for a man to own two vehicles.” Gripping my hip, he swayed me toward him. “If I have the kids, I drive the Caddy. If I’m by myself and the Caddy isn’t blocking the garage, I’ll take the truck.” He grinned, dipped low, brushed his lips to mine, and whispered, “If I’m with Mira, I take the truck even if the Caddy is blocking the garage and I have to move it so it’s not.”

My stomach performed gold-medal-worthy somersaults as I pushed up onto my toes and gave him far more than a lip brush.

His mouth opened, inviting me in. His warm tongue rolled with mine, acting as the welcoming committee. My head became light and I fisted my hands in the front of his shirt for balance. The moan that slipped from my throat made his tantalizing lips curve up in a smile before he pulled away.

Resting his forehead to mine, he rumbled, “Breakfast and condoms, baby. We can’t do anything without them.”

“Not completely true,” I murmured. “I saw a loaf of bread in your kitchen. Toast will serve as sustenance, and you can eat while I do other things with my mouth that don’t require condoms.”

His hand slipped down to my ass. “I’ve missed your mouth, Mira. But not a chance in hell you start things on your knees and I don’t end them inside you. And, for that, I’m gonna need more than toast. So it looks like we’re back to breakfast and condoms.” He gripped my ass, rocking me against him. “But we’re going to take the truck so you can slide in real close. And, on the off chance you feel like getting handsy while I drive, I won’t object.”

That had happened a lot when we were younger. The minute my ass had hit his seat, he’d lift his arm in invitation and I’d slid all the way over, as close as I could get without being in his lap. And then he’d drive. Windows down, the world passing us in a blur, him being the only thing in focus.

Inside that truck, I had been free to be Mira.

And, the idea of having that now, after seventeen years of feeling like someone else, I became giddy with excitement.

“You have a bench seat?” I gasped, staring up at him with a megawatt smile.

Smirking, he released me and opened the passenger’s door.  “When I lift the armrest, I do.”

I giggled. “Jesus, it’s like you knew I’d be coming back.”

His shoulders jerked, and his jaw turned to granite. And then Jeremy Lark slayed me, brought me back to life, and then ruined me once and for all. “No. Because if I’d thought there was any chance of you ever coming back, I’d probably still be sitting on the tailgate of that clunker in the woods, waiting.”

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.
