My son is my life. Nothing on earth matters but him.

Soon, I’ll have to send him out into society. The cruel machine that gnashes innocence and spits out the hollowed remains of a child’s imagination. It’s a place I know all too well, considering my past. I’ve worked hard to separate myself from it, but it looms in the back of my mind—waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

My son, Logan, wants to have birthday parties, make friends, play at the park—all the normal things that seven-year olds want to do. All the things I want to do with him.

I’ve put up walls around our life to shield us from danger. Giant barriers to ward off possible threats.

Cora Chapman crashes through them like a wrecking ball. She’s intelligent and hilarious with soft curves and a spark that ignites a flame deep inside of me.

There’s only one problem—she’s Logan’s teacher.

When my past wraps its tentacles around my throat and threatens to strangle the breath from my lungs, I’m given an option—fight for my family’s freedom, or die as they’re stripped away from me.

I can’t lose. I won’t lose.

My name is Landon Lane and I am a warrior.

The door at the entrance to the school, down at the end of the hallway, slammed shut like a shotgun had fired. I jolted and tried to catch my breath. Logan grinned a little wider, which still wasn’t much.

“This place is so loud.” I inhaled a deep breath and brushed off my own embarrassment. Anything was worth it to set him at ease a little.

Footsteps pounded in my ears as whoever came through the door approached in a hurry.

Logan’s head tilted up and he leaped from his seat. I barely leaned out of his way in time. He took off in a dead sprint. My head craned around to the man’s shoes first—ordinary Nike cross trainers. Nothing special.

But the way they traversed the ground—Montague soles pounded the Capulet tiles.

My gaze roamed to the jeans—Levi’s, boot-cut, regular denim, frayed at the seams—worked in and worn.

Damn.

My stare tilted up and drank the scenery. A charcoal-gray hood dipped down and cast a shadow over his eyes.

A breath cut too short and some sound I’d never made in my life escaped my lungs and dissolved into the tension saturating the room.

Logan’s father (I assumed) dropped to a knee, and Logan sprinted straight into his massive arms. His hoodie remained pulled up over his head. It’d probably been to shield him from the rain outside. I’d never seen Logan move so fast. He disappeared into the giant thunderhead biceps that engulfed him in a hug.

“I didn’t do anything wrong.” Logan sobbed into the man’s shoulder.

A giant hand wrapped around the back of his head and pulled him in tight. The hood dipped down and nuzzled up next to his cheek then turned and whispered in his ear.

I stood up about twenty feet away and noticed myself leaning toward them, trying to get a better view or hear what was said. I’d only met an older woman named Janet who usually brought Logan to and from school. She rarely spoke to anyone, but she was always polite.

“How long are they going to make us wait in here? Jesus Christ!” Charles Hastings’ voice roared once again from the office. Principal Williams was still nowhere to be found.

The hood-covered head popped up and turned in the direction of the words, but I still couldn’t make out his eyes.

God, what I would have given for a peek at his face.

The dark shadow under the hood turned to me. My heart threatened to explode out of my chest and my lungs stopped functioning. I still couldn’t see his eyes, couldn’t see his stare. Somehow, he managed to make my palms sweat. My palms never sweat.

Why’s he staring at me?

“Fucking ridiculous!”

My head whipped to the door.

Hastings.

I inhaled a deep breath and stomped toward the office. I’d learned long ago that if I didn’t set a certain tone with unruly parents they’d walk all over me.

Throwing the door open, I glared at the short balding man of maybe fifty. “It will be a few more minutes. Watch your language, please. This is a school. Not your living room.”

I slammed the door shut before he could get out another word.

Where the hell is Principal Williams?

I wasn’t one to shirk duties or get out of responsibility, but I really could use some back up. Parents had fought over pettier things than the words Hastings was slinging left and right, in front of his son no less. Maybe if I’d been at this school longer I’d have a better idea of how they handled these situations.

I froze in front of the door for a quick second and schooled my features. Could I go back out and face the enigma comforting his son in the hall? I had to. It was my job.

I walked back out to make sure Logan was okay, each step with a pair of concrete bricks attached to my feet.

“My son didn’t hit that little shit out there! We shouldn’t even be here!”

I paused and gritted my teeth. The moment now took a firm seat at the top of the podium as the number one awkward situation of my career, and I’d taught at a low-income New York City elementary school.

Jesus.

Other teachers had warned me about Hastings. The general consensus was that the guy was a raging jerk with little-man syndrome. I had no choice but to concur.

The man in the hood squeezed Logan once more into a bear hug, seemed to whisper something else, and then released him.

Hastings railed off even more expletives and threats from the office.

Logan’s father didn’t take off his hood, just advanced straight toward me. Logan stood in the hallway behind him.

He was not a small man by any means. The closer he came, the tighter my stomach twisted into a knot. The walls closed in on me and the thunder seemed to rumble with each of his footsteps. I gulped when he was about five feet away.

His shoes squeaked against the tile when he stopped and crossed his arms over his chest. It stretched the fabric across his shoulders and I realized just how large he was. It was one hundred percent muscle. I tried to keep my thighs from squeezing together and nearly failed.

Compose yourself.

My father named me Courage—even though I went by Cora—when I was born, but I was not living up to it at that moment.

I stretched out a hand toward him. “Hi, I’m sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances. I’m Cora—”

I barely made out two eyes in the shadow of his hood. He sized me up and down, and gestured like he might actually reach out for my hand. Hastings belted out more empty threats from inside the office. The hood turned in that direction and left my hand abandoned mid-air.

I’d never had trouble speaking in front of a parent before, but something about Logan’s dad was just—I didn’t know what it was, to be honest—scary, exciting, mysterious.

I lowered my hand to my side. My mouth was drier than the Sahara. “I, umm, there was an incident, on the playground.”

I tried to keep my voice down. If Hastings knew Logan’s father had shown up there was no telling what might happen. Looking at the man in front of me, it wouldn’t be much of a fight, and I was definitely in no position to stop him if things escalated beyond a discussion.

My eyes strayed to the Levi’s again for a split-second before I caught myself. I had certainly missed Montana men and their jeans. Some might’ve called it a weakness of mine.

He turned back to me, slowly. I watched every move. He took in every piece of information the scene had to offer and actually listened before speaking. People didn’t do that anymore, and I silently appreciated it.

“What happened?” His baritone voice vibrated through me like the encroaching thunder outside.

I stood there, blood pounding through my veins, heart racing down a quarter mile track with no parachute or brakes. His voice demanded an answer, but it didn’t seem coercive. There was a hint of concern laced in it.

“Logan didn’t do anything wrong. Like I said before, there was an incident. We just called both—”

The sound of a chair shuffling and footsteps from the office cut me off. I froze. Hastings must’ve heard me talking.

A tingling sensation radiated through my limbs and goosebumps pebbled down my arms. I had to force a slight smile from my face and mashed my lips into a thin line.

Logan’s father took a few commanding steps toward the door and made sure he’d be the first thing Hastings would see. He put himself right between us and his shoulders were so broad I couldn’t see around him. My thighs tried to squeeze together again. I cursed them silently and stepped out to the side so I could at least see Hastings’ face.

“I’m not waiting for this bullshit any—” The door to Williams’ office burst open. Hastings froze right along with his sentence when he saw Logan’s dad.

His voice went down an octave, barely noticeable. His chest deflated a little too and he tried to recover. “You the dad of the little shit making up stories about my kid?” His words were shaky, and he nodded up the hall toward Logan.

Uh oh.

The hood turned to Logan and looked right through me. “Wait in the car.”

I glanced back. Logan didn’t dare question him. Hell, I don’t think anyone would’ve. I nearly took a step toward the parking lot and caught myself. Logan turned on a dime and took off.

I wasn’t about to stand by and let a dick measuring contest happen on my watch. Both of my hands found my hips and I side-stepped farther so that Hastings could see more than just my face. “Mr. Hastings, get back in the office. Now!”

He ignored me, as expected. I wasn’t a threat to him. The ballsy bastard took a couple of steps toward Logan’s dad until he was a few feet away from him.

Where is Williams? Probably peeking around a corner somewhere, watching.

“Mister Hastings, that is enough.” I started toward him.

Hastings sneered at Logan as he walked toward the door, then he turned to me and his chest puffed out a little more. “You fucking people have—”

Where the hell are you, Williams? Help!

A single finger.

I stopped in my tracks.

He held it up. The man in the hood.

One powerful index finger in the air.

It was just a finger.

That index finger stole the words from Hastings’ mouth and the breath from my lungs.

One gorgeous, forceful finger commanded everything in the room and even the storm outside seemed to shut the hell up.

His left hand balled into a fist at his side.

And we’ve now reached the ‘Oh shit’ portion of the night’s show.

Complete silence fell on the school.

I swear I couldn’t have made it up if I tried. The door closed behind Logan and he walked to the car. Lightning cracked overhead, and the immediate thunder seemed to pick up the building and shake it at the same time the man in the hood dropped his finger.

I shuddered. Freaking thunderstorms.

Logan’s father closed the small gap between him and Hastings. Hastings’ eyes widened like saucers, then his brows narrowed into a V.

Then he did possibly the dumbest thing I’d ever seen a man do. He poked Goliath in the chest. “Listen here—”

The hood tilted down to the finger, and then back up to Hastings’ face. Hastings tried to look tough, but his face was pale as a ghost, and sweat beads formed along his hairline.

The hood glared lasers at Hastings. “Don’t touch me.”

Hastings’ hand dropped like it might fall through the floor.

“D-dad?” Cory Hastings eased open the office door.

The hood shot to Cory for a quick second. He glanced at Hastings and then back to me and then back to Cory. His voice softened a hint while he looked at the boy. “Sorry.”

He turned and headed toward the exit, but stopped at my side. He looked straight ahead. Straight where his son sat in the car, waiting. “Logan won’t be back.” He paced down the hallway.

I turned and watched him leave. I stood there, mouth wide open, catatonic, brain short circuiting all over the place. Logan’s father disappeared through the double doors, and I blew out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.

Oh my God.

Maybe Desire, Montana wouldn’t be so bad after all.

“Okay, we ready?” Principal Williams strolled up from the other end of the hallway.

You’ve got to be shitting me.

REVIEW:

This is the third book I’ve read by Sloane Howell this year, and I am once again impressed by his ability to weave an interesting, intricate story. I loved both Bossed and Scored, his two connected yet standalone sports-themed romantic comedies. Howell’s writing truly captivated me in both of those books, and I was excited to get my hands on this one. Very different from his romcoms in both tone and delivery, Bad Dad was a fresh and unusual story that pulled me right in from the start and held my attention all the way through as I devoured it.

Bad Dad was a bit of a surprise in that it was not the romantic comedy I think I was expecting it to be. What it was, though, was an intense, action-packed MMA fighter story with a wildly creative twist. Howell is known for his sense of humor, and despite the more serious nature of this story, dry wit was woven brilliantly throughout the story. In fact, this book contains one of the funniest scenes I’ve read this year, and I practically roared with laughter as it played out on the page. Seeing as this is a single dad romance, I’m happy to say that I enjoyed the sweet father-son relationship in this book as much as I did the sexy romance between the hero and heroine.

I don’t want to spill too many details here since part of my enjoyment of this story was the fact that it took me by surprise at several points while reading it, and I believe other readers should have the chance to enjoy it the same way. What I will say is that Sloane created a complex hero in the socially awkward Landon Lane. He was alpha to the core, and he was driven, loyal, fierce and determined, but there was an almost cultivated sense of humanity about him that was attractive and endearing. It took a bit longer for me to warm up to Cora, though, and there were a few instances where I was legitimately annoyed with her—not enough to stop reading or anything like that, but enough that I was frustrated with her, her choices and her decisions. Again, not enough to stop me from reading or to even ruin the story, but enough that her character had to—and did—work hard to redeem herself to me. The romance between the two of them burned hot, but it was Landon’s unwavering faith in them that had me swooning on my sofa. A fantastic cast of side characters rounded out this story, enriching it with another level depth and detail that infused a bit of charm into this fascinating tale.

Bad Dad was multilayered and exciting with a suspenseful plot, a steamy romance and bursts of deadpan humor made this a different type of story than I typically read. It held my attention the whole way through, entertaining and amusing me with an underdog hero whom I couldn’t help but root for and a story unlike anything I’ve ever read from this author before. Bad Dad by Sloane Howell gets 4.5 smooches from me!

EXCERPT:

I’d been fooled once by the promise of quiet nights and serene days in the sunshine. I believed the brochure when it said I could leave my worries at home and escape to a simpler, quieter kind of life. I let myself be lured in by the picturesque landscape and stunning mountains. I foolishly fell prey to the temptation of leaving my current set of troubles behind in San Francisco while I hid away in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming.

I now knew firsthand the glossy brochure that brought me to Wyoming the first time was nothing more than a bunch of pretty, packaged lies. I knew the bar brawl erupting in front of me was hardly the worst thing that could happen here. In fact, the level of bloodshed and violence was child’s play compared to what I’d witnessed the last time I’d stepped foot in this small, quaint town. Well, I hadn’t really been in Sheridan last time I was here. I’d spent most of my time in the backwoods that surrounded the Warner brothers’ ranch, which was still a good forty-five minutes outside of this tiny town. The ranch was where I was currently trying to get to so I could see my best friend.

When I left Wyoming, I told myself I would never come back.

Ever.

I told myself there was nothing here for me but bad memories and heartache. I was a pro at lying to myself, at telling myself exactly what I needed to hear to justify my actions. I could convince myself of anything, like it was okay that my last boyfriend stole my grandmother’s silver when I kicked him out because he needed it more than I did. I had no problem believing that pulling Leo out of the city was the only way to heal her broken heart even though she didn’t want to go. It was easier to distract her than it was to watch her wallow. I persuaded myself into believing what I needed to heal was space and solitude. I held onto that until time passed and I was still a mess. I was sick of my own company and of hiding from everything I was feeling. I was the one who always went out of my way to fix everyone else around me, it wasn’t exactly a shock to learn I didn’t have the skills to repair myself. I spent my days helping others focus on their goals, on doing better and achieving more, so I didn’t have to think about the lack of any ambition of my own. I turned thirty at the end of the year and I was still trying to figure out what and who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d been aimless for a long time; the only direction in my life come from the fact I knew all the way down to my bones that I had to go back to Wyoming and face off with Sutton Warner.

Review

Shelter is the second book in The Getaway series focusing on three brothers who run a ranch. Shelter picks up right where Retreat left off, though it can be read as a standalone. These books mix hot romance with an intense mystery to give us readers a story that is as exciting as it is heartwarming. So far this is my favorite in the series. My heart went out to Emrys and all she has gone through. Sutton’s story is no easier, as a single father he is doing all he can to be the man he was raised to be but he has hit a low he never envisioned hitting and it isn’t until the one he sent away comes back into his life that he begins to find his path back to who he was. I ached for him and swooned over his devotion to Emrys and his daughter.

While this was my favorite in the series thus far I will say personally I would have like a lot more dialogue. I enjoy dialogue-heavy books and this was heavy on the internal thought. That being said I still found myself completely enwrapped in the story and unable to put it down. I am excited for the next book in the series because the little tidbits we have got have been so juicy I just cannot wait.

Review

We return with a bang in the final story in the Mount trilogy. After the explosive ending on the second book we pick right back up with Keira’s and Lachlan’s story as they both start to discover that what started out as a debt to be re-paid is evolving into so much more. Lachlan is determined to win over her heart and he isn’t going to let anyone or anything stop him from doing so!

“Lachlan Mount is a man unlike any other I’ve ever met, and although he’s not the first that I’ve called mine, I hope he’ll be the last.”

Out of the 3 stories in this trilogy this was by far my favourite! We have so much suspense and action and drama that kept me hooked the whole way through and I loved delving deeper into Lachlan’s personality and past.

“ I offer everything I have—including my own fucking life—to God, the devil, and any higher power who will listen if they’ll just let her live.”

It’s pretty much non stop action from the word get go. We know Lachlan has enmities and they are now going after Keira as well. This brings out the extremely fierce protective side of Lachlan and it’s through this we see how much he really adores Keira. I loved this side of Lachlan and I also loved getting to read about this past. In the first book he is such a mystery but by the end of the third we really get to know Lachlan better. Keira remains, as ever, a strong female lead and the perfect partner for Lachlan.

“ I used to avoid any connection for fear of weakness, but now I have no doubt that she’s my greatest strength. She gives me a reason to wake up every morning and rule our empire with honor. Even if it’s tarnished and dented.”

Just as in the first two books the plot is highly entertaining with action, suspense, some very hot scenes and twists and turns to keep you guessing. The chemistry between Keira and Lachlan alone is enough to call this a great romance read but we also have so much intensity and a thrilling plot. The ending is explosive with so much going on and all the pieces finally starting to come together- I’m glad we get the answers to the questions and are not left hanging like in some books. I would have loved the epilogue to go a bit further into the future but I was still very happy with the ending. Overall a steamy, intense, dramatic romance trilogy that I would highly recommend!

Cowboy Up by Harper Sloan Review

4.5 SMOOCHES!

SYNOPSIS:

New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan returns with the third in her sultry, Western-set Coming Home series, in which the eldest Davis sibling Clay may have finally met his match—but will he be able to give up the solitary, quiet life he’s built in the name of love?

As the eldest of the Davis clan, Clayton has always tried to lead by example. Along with taking his job as head of the family business seriously, he is also determined to keep his brother and sister in line. Clay is known for being serious, silent, and stoic—completely in control of his life. And with the way he grew up, coupled with a disastrous end to the last relationship he was in, he’s just fine with his quiet, solitary life.

What he hadn’t counted on was Caroline Michaels. She’s the proverbial woman next door—the town next door, that is. Caroline hasn’t lived an easy life, but after escaping from an abusive relationship, she’s finally living for herself and no one else. The last thing the quirky, shy bookstore owner expected was a steamy one-night stand with Clay Davis.

When Caroline and Clay meet, the connection is instant, both falling into one heated night of passion before parting ways—both driven by their own reasons to deny what they clearly wish didn’t have to end. It isn’t until Caroline falls on hard times and Clay comes back into the picture that they realize just how impossible it will be to stay away from each other.

Will Clay be able to give up his rootless existence in favor of finally settling down? And, more important, will Caroline want him to?

REVIEW:

I’m a huge fan of Harper Sloan’s Corps Security and Hope Town series which both feature alpha, military heroes and intense, suspenseful plots. So, when she announced the Coming Home series, I was excited to see what she’d do with cowboys, and Sloan delivered in this series with heartwarming, sexy stories rich with emotion and plenty of small town, down-home-everyone-in-your-business drama. Cowboy Up is the third book in the Coming Home series, and my favorite of the three books.

I’ve been looking forward to Clay’s story since the series launched. More of a parent than just an older brother to his siblings, Maverick and Quinn, Clay was the stable, guiding force in their lives after their mother abandoned the family leaving them with a harsh, angry, indifferent father. His focus was on them and the family ranch. Clay’s history with his ex-girlfriend was tumultuous and left him, understandably, with an inability to trust easily. He’s convinced himself that a relationship isn’t for him, that he’ll never marry or become a father, but lately, since both of his siblings have found love, married and are expecting their own children, he’s become lonely.

Caroline left Pine Oak behind the day she graduated high school, taking off with her boyfriend to escape a stifling, overbearing and verbally abusive mother, and in the process, she wound up leaving a very bad situation for what became a nightmarish one. Five years later, she’s returned to the area after escaping that abusive relationship, and she’s living her dream of owning her own bookstore. She meets Clay, and they share a sexy night together that neither was able to forget, and it’s a few months later before they run into each other again. Clay and Caroline had explosive chemistry from the very start, something that didn’t dim in the months that they were apart. That initial meeting was what it took for them both to realize what they were missing. In each other, Clay found a woman worthy of his trust and his love, and Caroline found a man with whom she felt safe and loved.

Sloan penned a warm, sweet and sexy love story in Cowboy Up that was uplifting and hopeful. This book was something markedly different from her previous works, and it was precisely those differences that kept me rooted in place and devouring this story. Readers should be excited about this side to Harper’s writing and the possibilities of where this author will go next. Cowboy Up by Harper Sloan gets 4.5 smooches from me.

Then Izzy wakes up the next morning in Johnny Gamble’s bed and good girl Izzy finds she likes being bad for Johnny.

Even so, Izzy feels Johnny holding her at arm’s length. But Johnny makes it clear he wants more and Izzy already knows she wants as much of hot-in-bed, sweet-out-of-it Johnny Gamble.

EXCERPT:
“Izzy?” she answered.
“Hey, I’m home,” I told her.
“Okay, well…how are you?”
How was I?
Johnny’s behavior explained by the sad fact it was the anniversary of his father’s death, but still explained, and he was coming over for dinner the next night, not to mention, after not being affectionate (at all, unless you counted sitting me on the countertop, which I kind of did) after the last time we’d had sex, he made out with me at the door of my car for a good, long, happy while—I was great.
“I’m great,” I told her, opening Serengeti’s stall and moving in, lifting a hand to pat her jaw while she moved her nose to snuffle my neck and blow at my hair.
“Damn,” Deanna muttered.
My hand arrested on Serengeti and I focused on Deanna.
“What?” I asked.
“Damn,” she repeated.
“Damn what?” I asked.
“Well, just to say Johnny Gamble is Johnny Gamble.”
A specific area in my chest squeezed at the way she imparted that obvious but still confusing information.
“What’s that mean?” I asked.
“He’s Johnny Gamble of Gamble Garages. Did he tell you that?”
No he didn’t tell me that.
And suddenly I was embarrassed about something that I hadn’t liked all along.
But it was worse since Deanna knew more about a man I’d slept with than I did.
Serengeti was getting fidgety, so I used my hand on her to lead her out of her stall, and once in the corridor, she trotted out the open bay at the back, directly into her pasture.
I moved to Amaretto as I shared with Deanna, “No, he didn’t tell me that. I mean, we talked but we were also doing other things.” I let that lie. It did, weighty between us on the phone, before I went on, “I don’t know what that means.”
Even though it seemed like I did. Something seemed familiar about that.
“You haven’t lived here long enough,” she murmured while I opened Amaretto’s stall and moved in for some quick pats before I let him loose. Louder, Deanna said, “You know the gas station in town?”
Oh yes.
That was where I’d seen it.
“He owns that?”
“That and seven more of them across three counties. None in the city, just in the counties. Some of them are like mini-mart stores. All of them sell gas and do work on cars.”
Wow.
That was impressive.

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
