A Little Too Late by Staci Hart

Publishing Date:  October 24th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with the nanny.

When my wife left, she took the illusion of happiness with her, and I’ve been caught in a free fall ever since. For nine long months, I’ve been fighting to figure out how to be a single dad, how to be alone.

For nine long months, I’ve been failing.

When Hannah walked through the door, I took my first breath since I’d found myself on my own. She slipped into our lives effortlessly, showing me what I’ve been missing all these years. Because Hannah made me smile when I thought I’d packed the notion of happiness away with my wedding album.

She was only supposed to be the nanny, but she’s so much more.

The day my wife left should have been the worst day of my life, but it wasn’t. It was when Hannah walked away, taking my heart with her.

Excerpt:

Hannah

The first time I saw Charlie Parker, I didn’t see one thing at a time; I saw all of him. It was an assault on my senses, an overwhelming tide of awareness, and for a moment, the details came to me in flashes over what was probably only a few seconds but felt so much longer.

His hair was blond and gently mussed, his face long and nose elegant. I could smell him, clean and fresh with just a touch of spice I couldn’t place. I tipped my chin up—he was tall, taller than me, and I hovered just at six feet—and met his eyes, earthy and brown and so deep. So very deep.

And then he smiled.

He was handsome when he wasn’t smiling. He was stunning when he was.

I was so lost in that smile, I didn’t register the flying gob until it whapped against my sweater. Tiny splatters of something cold speckled my neck.

This was the moment the clock started again, and the sweet serenity slipped directly into chaos.

A blond little boy looked up at me from his father’s side with a devilish gleam in his dark eyes. The spoon in his hand was covered in blood-red jam and aimed at me like an empty catapult.

Several things happened at once. Charlie’s face morphed into embarrassed frustration as he reached for who I presumed to be his son. The boy—Sam, I guessed from the names I’d been given by the agency—spun around lightning fast and took off down the hallway, giggling. Another child began to cry from somewhere back in the house, and a bowl clattered to the ground, followed by a hissed swear from what sounded like an older woman.

I glanced down at the sliding, sticky mess against my white sweater and started to laugh.

Charlie’s head swiveled back to me, his face first colored with confusion, then in horror as he looked at the Pollock painting on my sweater.

“Oh my God,” he breathed, his apologetic, wide eyes dragging down my body. “Jesus, I am so sorry.”

I was still laughing, almost a little hysterical. I couldn’t even tell you why.

I waved a hand at Charlie, and he took my elbow, guiding me into the house as I caught my breath. Another crash came from the kitchen, and a little girl came toddling out into the entry, leaving powdery footprints on the hardwood.

Charlie’s face screwed up. “Sam!” he called, stretching the word, a drawn-out promise of consequences.

A riot of giggling broke out in the kitchen.

We both snapped into motion. I followed him as he scooped up his crying daughter and stormed toward the kitchen. The little girl watched me over his shoulder with big brown eyes, her breath hitching in little shudders and her small finger hooked in her mouth.

Charlie stopped so abruptly, I almost ran into him.

When I looked around him and into the kitchen, my mouth opened. I covered it with my fingers as laughter bubbled up my throat.

A bag of flour sat in the middle of the floor, the white powder thrown in bursts against the surrounding surfaces and hanging in the air like smoke. The floor next to the bag was the only clean spot, shaped like a small bottom—the little girl’s, I supposed. A bowl lay upside down, its contents oozing from under the rim and slung in a ring from ceiling to cabinet to floor, as if it had completed a masterful flip on its way to its demise. And in the center of the madness stood an older woman with flour in her dark hair and dusted down the front of her. Clutched under her arm was a wriggling Sam, offending spoon still in hand.

Her face was kind but tight with exasperation. “Please tell me this is the new nanny,” she said flatly.

“I doubt we could convince her to stay at this point,” he said with equal flatness.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

THE OTHER BROTHER
NA Romantic Comedy
Model: David Harris

I got the call. The dreaded call every child fears. My dad wasn’t well, and the man who had always been my everything needed me.

There was only one thing to do; pack up and head back to my hometown. I had finally made my dream life in the city with the great job and loving boyfriend. But was there really a choice not to go?

I found a wonderful job, a quaint house to rent, my boyfriend was working on joining me in Binghamton, and my favorite pizza place was only miles away. Life was good.

Until I met my neighbor.

It’s been three years since I’d seen Aaron Walters, and my God is he all kinds of sexy gorgeous. Figures. He was supposed to be my forever, the man I grew old with, but he had different plans. How can a man who ripped my heart apart still trip me up? How can he make me still want him now more than ever?

I’m tempted, I’m drawn toward him, I’m completely and utterly unaware that I’m dating his biological brother.

Now two men own my heart. The question is, which brother will I choose?

About the Author:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Review

Keira has had a hard time recently. The passing of her cheating and conniving husband, taking on her family’s business which is struggling and now the worse thing has hit her….not only was her dead husband cheating on her, he also borrowed money off one of the most dangerous and ruthless men, Lachlan Mount, and Lachlan has come to collect. Lachlan finds Keira a fascinating distraction and with her dead husband owing him money, he has decided to collect his debt but not in the way of money….instead he is collecting Keira as his form of re-payment. Will Keira be able to withstand being Lachlan’s property? Will Lachlan resist Keira’s fiery temper or will she turn into more than just a distraction?

“Keira Kilgore needs another lesson in what it means to be owned by Lachlan Mount.”

This was a very hot, dirty and sinful read which is one of my favourite categories! Lachlan was a very interesting, mysterious and dirty character and I have to admit I definitely fell for him. Not only do we have the very intense sexual side of the story but we also have drama surrounding Kiera’s business and her dead husband.

“Even his name sends bolts of heat through me, spawned from wrath unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I hate how he makes me feel. I hate that my body responds to him.”

There is no way around the fact that Lachlan is a very ruthless and scary man but there is also no denying that he is hot as hell and a very dirty and sexual man. I have to say I completely fell for his slightly depraved character. There is definitely more to him than his reputation but in this story we don’t really delve pass the reputation and rumours surrounding him so I’m hoping to learn more about him in the next book. Keira was the definition of a strong woman. Taking on a business in trouble, dealing with the death of her husband who was also cheating on her and now being ‘owned’ by Lachlan. Despite all this she remains defiant and brave in the face of a man who is rumoured to have made escorts ‘disappear.’

“How such a cruel man can be so brutally beautiful, I have no idea.”

The sex and chemistry between Keira and Lachlan was very hot, very dirty and very fun to read (one recommendation would be not to read this on the tube when people are looking over your shoulder!). There’s no denying the author hit the mark when it came to the erotica side of this story. It was more than just an erotica as well though, with drama and suspense and intrigue all playing a role within the plot. I was invested in finding out more about who Lachlan really was and just how awful Keira’s dead husband was. My only issue with this story would be that it is moving at quite a slow pace in the sense that we really didn’t learn much about Lachlan and the only really big thing to happen in book 1 comes at the very end- but it was a really big twist that I honestly didn’t see coming. Overall an intense read and I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes!

Crystal and Gabriel never imagined that the world, which had stolen everything from them, would bring them a deep love like this. Except fate will only take them so far, and now the choice is theirs: Harden their hearts once again or find the courage to shed their painful pasts.

Review

I LOVE all of Mia Sheridan’s books.  Her writing has a certain kind of special quality that automatically pulls at all of my heart strings.  Her stories are the same.  I went into this one thinking the premise sounded a little dark for my taste, but I should have known that Mia would not let down.  Oh how, Gabe and Crystal both won me over.  I’m tough on heroines and at first I was angry with Crystal and her choices, her lifestyle, and how she treated Gabe, but in time I learned to love her.  She was flawed and real and at her core so good.  And Gabriel.  He was swoony without being over the top alpha.  His kindness was sweet and sexy making for a deadly combination.  He had more patience and perseverance than i’ve read in any male character to date.

The writing was phenomenal through out this story.  This sweet couple stole my heart a little at a time as their story was revealed.  Mia Sheridan has delivered another unique story of overcoming the past and falling in love with the future.  I loved it!  Five Stars!

SYNOPSIS:

From the moment I met him, I knew he was trouble.

He was reckless, cocky, and everything I shouldn’t want.

I had a life all figured out, and Tucker Moore was not a part of the plan.

But somehow I slipped.

One moment I had it all under control.

The next I was spiraling around him, begging him for whatever he would give me.

But as quickly as I fell for him, it all crumbled around us.

Because everything I thought I knew was far from the truth.

There was only one way to fix what we had done.

So I turned my world Bottoms Up.

REVIEW:

This is the second book I’ve read by Holly Renee and the second time I’ve been impressed by her writing. She has a way of stringing her words together that just flows so eloquently and easily. This author has tremendous talent, and I’m already looking forward to more from her.

I really loved Tucker. Extremely protective of Kennedy, Tucker was also a dirty-talking, confident alpha wrapped up in a southern gentleman’s package making him one very swoon-worthy hero. This man was smitten with Kennedy right from the start and wasn’t shy about it. Kennedy was sassy and a bit nerdy, but she was working on confidence and self-esteem, things she struggled with as a result of years of what can only be described as verbal abuse from the awful people that were her family. She was a gifted photographer working hard to build her business despite pressure from her parents to pursue a degree and what they considered to be a real career.

Holly Renee surprised me with the depth of emotion she packed into this story. She managed to balance the angst and drama effectively, though, with quick wit and plenty of heat. But it was the love story here that was the star of the show, and this memorable couple was so sweet and sexy together. A fantastic cast of side characters rounded out this story into the richly developed, pleasure to read that it was. Bottoms Up by Holly Renee gets four and a half smooches from me!

SYNOPSIS:

He’s a player. But she’s about to score.

Opposites really do attract* as a sassy salesgirl turns a pro athlete’s life upside down in this supercharged standalone novel of seduction from the author of Bossed.

Kelsey: My mom would tell you I’m quite the catch, but since my last boyfriend, I haven’t been dating much. Maybe it’s my rocker style or my lack of filter that intimidates the boys. So I’m pleasantly surprised when Matt Stallworth waltzes into the indie record store where I work and gives as good he gets. Turns out Matt is a professional baseball player, which should mean he’s out of my league. But if he wants to hook up with me, he’s going to have to follow my rules.

Matt: After winning my MVP award, I learned that a guy can get used to having beautiful women practically throw themselves at you everywhere you turn. But everything changes the first time I see Kelsey Martin, and something just clicks. She’s hot, snarky, and whip-smart. I’ve got to see her again. Only problem is, she sees right through all my best moves. And I’m going to have to step up my game to convince Kelsey that I’m playing for keeps.

*And sexy times ensue—for mature audiences.

This standalone novel includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

REVIEW:

This is my second time reading Sloane Howell’s work, and I am once again impressed. I read the predecessor to this book, Bossed, earlier this year and absolutely loved it. Mr. Howell’s writing captivated me in that book, and I’ve been looking forward to reading Scored since I finished Bossed. It was worth the wait.

Howell created likeable, relatable characters in professional baseball player, Matt Stallworth, and record store employee/rocker chick, Kelsey Martin, and I was rooting for them from the start. Sloane did a fantastic job pulling the reader into Matt’s head, and I was thoroughly amused by that insight into this character. I genuinely liked Matt. He was confident without being an overly cocky jock, and he was an all-around good guy who was down-to-earth, romantic and had it bad for Kelsey.

Kelsey was not into sports—or athletes, especially professional ones. She was into music, and her taste in men definitely reflected that. Having been burnt a few times in her past by bad-boy rockers, she didn’t trust easily. She was definitely attracted to Matt, but she struggled at first to see past his wealth, fame and good looks. Matt was very patient and seemed to know how to handle her, though. I loved Matt and Kelsey! They were so sweet together, their back-and-forth banter was witty and hilarious, and the chemistry between them positively sizzled.

I really enjoyed Scored! An incredibly sexy but still sweet romance, full of as much heart as there was humor came together through Howell’s excellent writing into a truly entertaining romantic comedy with a sports spin. Scored by Sloane Howell gets four-and-a-half smooches from me!

About DIGNITY:

Looks can be deceiving.

I knew that most people took one look at the ink and the impossibly big and strong body it covered and decided I was a brawler…a bruiser…a beast. However, I was hardwired to be a thinker, not a fighter.

I should have chosen to use my brain and talents to be one of the good guys, a hero, a man with dignity and worth.

I turned my back on dignity and sold my soul to the highest bidder, deciding to dance with the devil, instead.

I couldn’t figure out how to help myself, so there was zero chance I knew how to save someone else.

That someone else was Noe Lee. She was the unkempt, unruly thief who was just as smart as I was and twice as street savvy. She was annoyingly adorable beneath the dirt and grime, and she was in trouble. In way over her head, I told myself it wasn’t my job to keep her from drowning. In the Point, it was sink or swim, and I wasn’t the designated lifeguard on duty.

I shut the door in her face, but now she’s gone…vanished…disappeared without a trace. It took less than a second for me to realize that I wanted her back.

When a woman comes along that melts all the frozen, hard things you’re made of; you’ll do anything you have to, to bring her home.

What you see is not always what you get…and with a man like me, what you get is more than anyone ever bargained for.

Excerpt

Protective and possessive instincts coiled around my gut and rage felt like it was going to choke me. I was so used to being cold and numb, I didn’t know what to do with the fire that was licking at my insides.

“I saw him take her out of the trunk when they got to the docks. He moved like a cop. Not the kind who is there to actually protect and serve, but the kind who pulls you over for no reason and slaps cuffs on you to prove a point. I was locked up for a lot of years, boy genius. I know what a dirty cop looks like. He had a busted-up nose and stitches on the side of his face. Should be pretty easy for Titus to identify him.”

Titus King was Bax’s half-brother and the only law enforcement officer in the entire city any of us slightly trusted. He was one of the few men the Point hadn’t tainted. He was a good guy, trying to do right by the people in our city, and he wouldn’t hesitate to throw Goddard’s dirty cop under the bus. But I didn’t want anyone going after the Mayor. His sadistic ass was all mine.

“Do you think they made it out of the container after you hit it with the truck?” That had been my idea. Nassir was only sending in Booker and Benny to get Noe out, but I didn’t think it was enough fire power. Since he refused to let me go, even siccing Chuck on me as a babysitter until the job was done, I made Benny go over the plan with me no less than a hundred times until I came up with a better one. Knocking the container sideways with one of the big semi-trucks that littered the area would give Benny the time he needed to get Noe out and distract the outside security detail enough that Booker could do his thing. It was a risk because the people inside the container—including Noe and Benny—might have ended up injured when the thing flipped, but the odds of them making it out were much higher than if Benny tried to take on everyone on his own.

“If Benny made it out, we won’t hear from him again. That was the deal he made with Nassir. He would get your girl and then disappear, so he can go and live happily ever after with his. As for the rest of them,” he shrugged, “I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Your girl said someone had a gun, so if they were shooting at Benny, he would do whatever he could to make sure they stopped. He’s not about to catch a bullet for any of us. I know you want that asshole alive for your own reasons, but honestly, it’s better if Benny popped him.”

It was better, but it wasn’t what I wanted. A bullet between the eyes was way too easy for a guy like Goddard. People would bemoan how bad the Point had become, how Goddard had been a staunch supporter of crime prevention measures. He would die a martyr and a legend. I couldn’t stand the thought of that. I wanted who Goddard was, who he really was, out in the open. I wanted his mansion doors flung wide open and every skeleton inside the walls exposed and thrown out on the perfectly manicured lawn for the entire world to see. I hated people who hid behind the law. I hated when men in any position of power got off on using their elevated status to jerk the helpless and hopeless around. Death wasn’t the answer. Devastation was.

I closed my eyes and squeezed the cold, still hand that was clasped in mine. Failure weighed heavy on my shoulders and fury lit up my blood like popping and sizzling firecrackers.

“When do we ever end up with anything that’s better for us?” That wasn’t how the Point worked. That wasn’t how we worked.

Booker grunted and I felt him move behind me. “It happens. It doesn’t seem like better should be able to find a foothold in this place, but despite all odds, it does.”

I am a Jay Crownover lover. I’ve read and enjoyed every book she has written. I found her years ago when her second book was released and was hooked from the start. Dignity is just another great book in a series of hits from Jay.

Snowden Stark is a hero unlike any other Jay has written. Yes he’s hot and covered in tattoos but he is reserved, nerdy, and so smart it blow your mind. I honestly loved him from the start. Then there is Noe. She is tough, self sufficient, a bit bad but in a Robin Hood sort of way. Individually they were each brash and street tough but together they had a softness I very much enjoyed.

From the start I knew Dignity was something special and every word lived up to that for me. It was easy to get lost in this story and the bad boys from The Point you can help but love.
