SYNOPSIS

A new romantic comedy by M.C. Cerny, Love Under Construction is book one in the Love By Design series. Come meet a sullen, stubborn hero with a 2×4 stuck up his rear about falling in love, and a heroine who has watched every episode of the Property Brothers ready to flip her dream house. Between every construction nightmare possible, animals that need to move out, and friends determined to interfere, what could possible go right? Step into a small town with a big heart, and laugh your way into love. Each book in the LBD series is a standalone HEA romance.

Hunter Hart knows construction.

He knows relationships hurt after watching his parents self destruct.

Somehow he forgot all the warnings when Taylor Jane Bryant blasted through the crumbling foundation around his heart.

Taylor Jane Bryant knows home design.

Well… she thinks she knows based on marathon sessions of her favorite television show.

Now she’s all grown up and ready to nail the last stud, Hunter Hart.

REVIEW

This was my first time reading M.C. Cerny, and I went into this story liking the premise considering I am a fan of these types of shows on television. I also love the whole friends-to-lovers trope, so Love Under Construction sounded like it would be right up my alley.

It was cute and sweet and funny, for the most part. But something, and honestly, I can’t put my finger on what exactly it was that was missing for me, but something was. I had difficulty connecting with Taylor Jane and Hunter and trouble feeling the connection between them as more than friends, and as a result it just wasn’t what I hoped it was going to be. There were some sections where I struggled with the urge to skim over what I was reading, and on several occasions, I found myself not enjoying what I was reading enough that I needed to put the book down and walk away. It actually took me several days to even get through the book, and well, that’s just not me at all. I’m the type of person who reads at least one book a day, sometimes more.

It’s not all bad news, though. It was well written and edited, and I did laugh at some of the humor. There were things about this book that I enjoyed, and because of that, I will definitely give this author another try at a later date. Truthfully, I think this is one of those personal preference issues, an “it’s me and not the book” kind of thing or maybe even it was that I was having an off couple of reading days, which happens to all of us as readers sometimes. I think if you’re a fan of a friends-to-lovers storyline, or if the premise of this book (which I really did love the sound of!) interests you, you should give it a try, and hopefully it’ll work better for you than it did for me. But whatever the reason, ultimately there was just a bit more that didn’t work for me personally than there were things that did, and because of that Love Under Construction by M.C. Cerny gets 3.5 smooches from me.

excerpt

My head shook absentmindedly as I tried to comprehend all that he had told me.

Knowing the man Lucas was behind the darkness, I couldn’t grasp why he had ever fought to get into this life at all.

“I’d been wondering what had happened in your life to make you into the devil I saw so often at the beginning,” I began, my voice soft . . . almost hesitant. “But now I wonder how you were able to remain you, instead of letting the devil completely consume you.”

“Don’t ever make the mistake of thinking that that part of me isn’t there.”

“I couldn’t,” I said honestly and huffed a small laugh. “He’s always there . . . I see you fighting him all the time. Now, more than I have in a long time.”

He held my stare, and his dark eyes burned with something I couldn’t define. “You’re afraid of me.”

I wished in that moment for my room so I could have something to hide behind, at least for a minute, because I knew I couldn’t hide any of the emotions coursing through me, and I couldn’t lie to him. “Yes,” I whispered and hated that he seemed to not only expect my answer but accept it. Reaching out, I traced around the outer edge of his eye, thankful I wasn’t shaking. “I’m afraid of the eyes I’m looking into right now. I’ve been afraid of them for a long time. I’m afraid of what I know about you now, but I wonder if I haven’t always known. If you haven’t hinted at it before . . .”

“Briar—”

“But the things you see in your mind that force me to see these eyes? They’ve been there this whole time. They were there when I fell in love with you, and I knew when I fell that they would always be there.” I watched as he fought with whatever haunted him and lowered myself back onto the bed and curled against his side. “The darkest part of your soul can terrify me, but it won’t cause me to leave.”

He gripped my hand in his, and mumbled, “Sometimes I wish it would.” Before I could react or respond, he continued. “If you think I’m dangerous, maybe you understand what my life is like, and maybe you can grasp the danger in throwing out the rules for you. Eventually someone other than William will see what you mean to me. And with who we are and what we do, we all have so many enemies who’ve been waiting for a chance to get back at us—to hurt us.” He raised our joined hands to kiss my wrist and let his lips linger on the skin there. “We don’t have weaknesses, Briar, but you are mine. They’ve been waiting for you.”

Review

Briar can’t believe what has happened to her, her perfect life has been ripped away from her. She herself has been taken against her will and sold to a dark and dangerous man. Lucas was never meant to buy Briar and he has no business having the feelings he has for her. But is all as it seems? Is Lucas just a dark and evil man or is there more behind this exterior and is Briar’s feelings for Lucas turning from hate, lust to something more?

“We’re a battle of the brightest day and the darkest night—and I want to lie in the wake of our war.”

This was a dark, gritty, dirty and sometimes disturbing book- there is no way around that. The subject matter is not for the faint hearted but if you are a fan of dark reads like I am then you will love this book! Yes it’s dark but it is also much more and everything really isn’t at it seems especially when it comes to Lucas.

“But I’d been happy with our life and excited for the days to come. Until they didn’t. Until I was forced into a world I’d been blind to and came face to face with the devil. A man cloaked in darkness—a man who would set me free. A man hidden in a world I vowed to destroy with him by my side.”

Briar and Lucas were both captivating characters. I truly believed Briar was beyond brave despite knowing she was truly terrified sometimes. She didn’t let her fear completely take over and she always remained a bit defiant which was amazing in her circumstances. Lucas is one complicated character. You hate him in the beginning because of what he has done but even from the beginning you know deep down he isn’t all evil, that he isn’t actually wanting to do what he is doing.

“I had given my heart to a man who had no intention of giving his to me. As much as I wanted to believe that he could, I wasn’t sure he was capable of such things. Because he is darkness. He is the devil … … and I love him. Devastating.”

I definitely had very mixed emotions when it came to Lucas and their relationship in general. But that’s one of the things I loved about this story, the range of emotions this story stirred in me. The rage, sadness, desperation, heat, passion, confusion….I literally felt everything! There were so many shocking moments, things I didn’t see coming. It kept me gripped from start to finish and right up until the end I didn’t know where we were going to end up.

He got it.

He finally got it.

He got why John Lennon left the Beatles for Yoko.

He got why Dred wrote a love song for Pixie.

From the moment Jordan’s lips touched Lexi’s, he couldn’t imagine anything else feeling and tasting quite so perfect for the rest of his life.

He ran his tongue along the seam of her lips and she groaned, opening for him. He thrust his hands further into her hair as their tongues touched. She tasted of wine and sweetness, and he couldn’t get enough.

While her eyes were closed, his were open, unwilling to miss a single moment of what was happening between them. He angled her head, and she rose up on her toes to meet him. He thought he was going to faint as the blood rushed from his brain to his cock, which ached for contact.

Lexi’s arms wound their way around his waist, her hands finding the way under his leather jacket and sweater to rest upon his back. Skin on skin. How he wanted them to be. Naked. Exposed. Nothing between them as he made love to her in a huge bed that they could stay in for days.

Except he didn’t have a huge bed. And he didn’t have the kind of room she deserved to stay in. He had an attic. And a box under his bed that held his most treasured possessions that nobody else would understand. A secondhand copy of Scales, Chords & Arpeggios, and the first birthday card he ever received from Maisey and Ellen. Random shit nobody else would care about.

Jordan pulled away slowly and looked carefully at Lexi. Her lips were pink and plump, her cheeks flushed, her eyes wide.

“Jordan,” she whispered.

“I gotta go. Bye, Lexi,” he said. He needed to get home and then drink enough to forget about her. Banish the stupid idea swirling around in his mind that they could have any kind of relationship. He should never have kissed her. It was hard enough to walk away before, but now that he had a clearer idea of what it was he was actually walking away from, it hurt all the more.

“Wait,” Lexi said as she grabbed his arm.

The small voice in his brain told him to keep walking, but he couldn’t. Instead, he turned to see what she wanted.

Lexi grabbed a pen from her purse, the one she had given him to sign the napkin in the restaurant. She reached for his hand and turned it over so his palm was facing up and quickly scribbled something on it. When she was done, she stood on her tiptoes again and kissed his cheek.

Weakness was a new sensation, but he felt it down to his boots as, against his better judgment, he leaned his cheek ever so slightly toward her lips.

“Good night, Jordan,” she said and bounced up the porch, grabbing her hat from the chair where Jordan had tossed it.

She paused in the doorway to wave good-bye and then closed the door silently shut.

Only when he was certain that she was definitely gone did he allow himself the luxury of seeing what she had written on his hand. It was a phone number. Despite himself, he felt a murmur of excitement that she found him worthy of a second date.

Jordan turned toward home. As snow began to fall again, he hurriedly made the short hike across the Don Valley river and ravine to his neighborhood, trying to halt the avalanche of emotions because of ten hand-scribed digits.

Review

I have been a fan of Scarlett Cole since her debut novel and every book I read I am reminded as to why I just love her and her stories. They are unique and different. Dark at times without being depressing and full of hot moments and swoony scenes. Jordan Reclaimed is the latest of her stories to renew my love for her.

Jordan Steele is the base player for the metal band, Preload. He is possible one of the most tragic characters I have read which has caused him to grow up to be a man with major dependency issues. He is frozen in time as the boy with abandonment issues and the thought our his foster brothers/ bandmates moving on with their lives and out of their shared house causes him intense anxiety.

“I’m sorry. I’m out of my depth. I don’t date. I don’t share. I don’t do small talk and bistros and ballerinas.”

Lexi is living the ballerina dream but with that dream comes untold pressure. Especially from her father who is cold and demanding. When a stranger walking by on Christmas night stops and watches through the window at her practicing she is drawn to him even though they have never spoken a word. Over time they come to know one another and while both damaged and flawed to the point where it is hard to turn around they both want what they could have together desperately.

Jordan Reclaimed had me tearing up over and over but also had me smiling and hopeful in the same chapter. It was a perfect balance. While my heart ached for the pain these two have been forced to endure watching them come out of the flames of it all and find their way made this story for me. Scarlett Cole has succeeded in writing a book unlike any other and I am desperate now to get my hands on the next in the series, Elliott Redeemed.

SWEET RIVALRY - RDL banner

sweetrivRyder Rodgers had a plan.

He was going to stride into the conference room, do the required song and dance over the next five days, and win the biggest contract of his career. But when he walked in and heard the voice of one of his competitors, all his plans were shot to hell.

Harper Denton. She was always on top. In college. First in their class. Always using every advantage to edge him out to win the coveted positions. The only one who could beat him. His academic rival. More like a constant thorn in his side. And his ego’s.

When he heard her voice, he was brought back to years before. To the bitter taste of being second best. But the woman who meets his gaze is nothing like the drab wallflower he used to know. Hell no. She was all woman now: curves, confidence, and staggering sex appeal. And no doubt, still brilliant.

The fact that she’s gorgeous and bright won’t distract him. This time, Ryder’s determined to be the one on top. But not if Harper can help it.

He takes a step toward me then hesitates, but before I can process anything else, his lips are on mine.

And not just on mine––not just a brush of lips against lips—but I’m talking all in. Hands on my cheeks, tongue licking between my lips, body pressed against mine, groan in the back of his throat, type of all in.

I don’t react at first. I’m stunned. Flabbergasted, my mind reeling from the anger to the surprise to now this without any warning at all.

This is Ryder.

My rival.

My supporter.

My crush.

The thoughts flicker that this is what I’ve wanted. But they soon shift to panic. To insecurity I don’t kiss well enough. That this is all a joke and I’m the butt of it.

But then I feel. Everything. All at once.

And I know this is real.

It’s like I can’t catch my breath and have too much air all at the same time.

My body is on fire. And not just from his touch but from that burn deep inside that feels like it’s exploding and imploding all at once.

So this is what it feels like to really be kissed.

It’s a fleeting thought before the sensations, the moment, the emotions, consume me whole.

His hands move my face to change the angle of the kiss. His fingertips on the line of my jaw singe my skin. His lips move expertly against mine, and all I can do is feel. All I can do is want.

Thinking isn’t an option.

The anger from before has morphed to want. The adrenaline has recharged with desire.

There is no rivalry.

There is no graduation ceremony tomorrow I’m missing to catch my flight.

There is no panic over if I’ll ever see him again.

It’s just him.

And me.

The scent of his cologne in my nose. The heat of his body against mine. The taste of hunger in his kiss.

Besides, I can’t help admiring her: The girl’s a genuine survivor, tough and lean, with eyes of steel. But the more I get to know Tiffany, the more I want her. Every inch of her. Which means I’m about to make a bad situation a hell of a lot worse.

REVIEW

Man!  THIS BOOK!  I freaking loved it!  I have enjoyed this entire series but this one, Wait For It, turned out to be my very favorite by a long shot!  I just LOVED Blake and Tiffany!  The two of them together made for a dramatic, sexy, angsty, story that I could not get enough of. I never knew what was going to happen next.  What crap Blake would say and how Tiffany would react.  There story is hard fought one and it was positive electric, sizzling off the pages.

And it when it was smoking hot and shocking, it simply hit me right in the darn feels.  So many dang feelings.  Especially for Blake and his closed off confused must fix everything self.  I just adored him and wanted to smack him all at the same time.

‘Please see me.  See Everything I’ve hidden for so long in fear of scaring everyone I love away.’

Gah.  Man, he hit me right in the heart.  And the writing in this book is simply phenomenal.  This author puts words into places I would never ever think to and they come off brilliant  and keep me wrapped tight around every sentence.  I read this one straight through.  I just couldn’t put it down and you won’t be able to to either, so pick it up now!

EXCERPT

“Guess Gracie’s new boyfriend bailed,” Mike said.

Eric raised an eyebrow. “Who? That lawyer?”

“How do you know about the lawyer?” Mike asked.

“I met him at the Halloween Ball.”

Mike ran a hand through his brown hair, ruffling the short strands. “Yeah, I guess she invited him, and he said he would come. Must have gotten cold feet.”

“Or he’s bringing his own car in case he needs to escape,” Travis said.

Gabe tossed his beer can into the trash. “Now, who would want to escape all this fun?”

Eric was contemplating a speedy exit himself when he heard his mother yelling his name.

The guys started heckling him about his mommy calling him, and Eric flipped them the bird as he walked up the driveway to the house. He came up behind Gracie while she was headfirst in the back of her CRV, wearing a lacy white dress, tights, and cowboy boots. Her blonde hair traveled past her shoulders now, covering up the collar of her jean jacket and he had to admit that he liked it better than the shorter do she usually sported.

“Need some help?” he asked.

She jumped a mile in the air with a scream and dropped the brightly wrapped package in her hands.

“Geez, do you have to sneak up on people? Do you understand that if I was holding Gemma and Travis’s cake, you would have been the reason it was smashed to bits?”

Eric held up his hands in surrender. “I was just offering to carry stuff in for you. No need to bite my head off.”

Gracie’s cheeks turned a deeper shade of red, and he hated that he noticed how it brought out the green of her eyes.

“I’m sorry. It’s been a rough day. I didn’t mean to take it out on you.”

Eric was surprised by her apology. Most of the time, she would snap back at him, something snarky that would set his teeth on edge. He wondered if she was coming down with something.

“It’s fine, we all have them. Do you want some help or what?”

Gracie tucked a stray curl behind her ear, revealing the smooth line of her throat.

Christ, get it together, Henderson.

“Sure, can you grab the presents while I get the cake?”

He reached past her to pick up the packages, and their shoulders bumped. He was close enough to smell the fruity scent of her hair and notice the shine in the blonde strands, almost as though she sprayed it with glitter.

“Are you having fun?” she asked abruptly.

Eric couldn’t stop his laugh. “At a baby shower? Sure, I’m having a blast.”

“Oh come on, it hasn’t even started, so it can’t be that bad.”

He shot her a challenging look. “All my friends are wearing diapers that may or may not have fake poo in them on their shirts.”

Gracie juggled the plastic cake container into her arms, shaking her head. “It’s a game. Two of the diapers have a brown circle in them, and if you have one of them, you get a prize. How is winning ever a bad thing?”

Eric closed the hatch for her. “This kind of thing is just not meant for men. You ladies would have more fun sitting around giggling, and oohing and awing over baby clothes without us.”

“Oh my God, how sexist are you? We don’t all do that.”

They walked into the house to find Gemma showing the ladies who were already there some of the things she’d bought for the baby. When she held up a matching set of white shoes, the whole room erupted with cooing sounds.

Eric turned to face her with a grin. “You were saying?”
