EXCERPT:

Church

She kissed me.

Her lips touched mine and she destroyed me. This tiny ray of light that seemed determined to chase the darkness inside of me away unraveled me with nothing more than the brush of her very soft lips against mine.

I should’ve pulled away, either that or gone all in. The attraction between us was only going to end one way, with me inside of her as we scorched through one another, so a real kiss with tongues and teeth and grabbing hands was inevitable, especially if she was holding the door wide open in invitation. I was already struggling with the friend thing and this wasn’t helping at all. I stood there, holding her, feeling her as she rubbed her mouth over mine, the barest hint of pressure as she took a taste, as she feathered her lips against mine like she was trying to memorize the shape, the feel, the flavor of them. It was the singularly softest touch I’d ever experienced and yet it had the power to make my knees weak and my blood pop with a desire so sharp it felt like it could pierce right through my skin.

Her hand cradled my jaw, her fingers shaking with some of the same things I was feeling. This thing that lived between us was hungry and tired of being ignored. It buzzed around us, electric and hot, refusing to be cooled by the chill in the night air that surrounded us. If we weren’t careful the passion that was hungry and needy between us would consume us, devour us, and leave us nothing more than hollow husks filled with fading satisfaction and jagged disenchantment because no matter how good we were together it couldn’t and wouldn’t last. I didn’t want any part of me to be responsible for burning her out. I liked that her light chased my shadows away and that meant I wasn’t going to have any kind of hand in dimming her internal glow.

Her breasts pressed into the center of my chest as she leaned more fully into me and I could feel the pointed peaks of her nipples stab into my skin. The sensation made my dick twitch behind my zipper and had all the available blood that was still above my belt rushing south. I’d always liked the way Dixie was built. She was on the shorter side, but every single part of her small frame was curved and lush. She looked like a woman that you could grab ahold of without having to watch yourself. She was delicate but in no way did she come across as fragile or breakable. She looked like she could take everything I had to give her, all the pent-up longing, all the nights of frustration I spent hard and alone, all the denied hunger that made me want to eat her up and then go back for seconds and thirds because I knew there was no way I was going to have my fill of her honeyed lips and velvety skin in one go.

There was so much of her to experience, and I wanted to know what all of it felt like, tasted like, sounded like. I wanted to watch her come from every possible position I could get her in, and then I wanted to find some new ones, ones no man had ever had her in before, and watch her come in those, too. Because I knew once I got her she would let me have her in ways she hadn’t let anyone else. Her eyes, so pretty and dark, made me all kids of promises, and I wanted to take her up on every single one of them. But there wasn’t anything I could promise in return, and that always kept me from crossing the invisible line.

She ran the tip of her nose along the edge of my jaw and that little nuzzle made my entire body shudder. She had the ability to bring down all the walls I’d so carefully built up around us in order to keep both of us safe. She didn’t have any clue the kind of damage I could do if I ignored all the warning bells ringing loudly in the back of my mind. I knew the ways in which I could wreck the women in my life that I cared about and there was no way on God’s green and often unforgiving Earth that I would subject her to that. I barely survived the loss of the last woman I loved. I knew if I let Dixie sneak her way inside my heart and something happened to her there would be nothing left of me. There wouldn’t be anyplace left for me to run.

Review

‘No one had ever given me any idea how to handle it when the right one came along, but you weren’t the right one for him.’

This might just be one of my favorite Jay Crownover books yet. Church and Dixie’s love was hard won but worth the pain and struggle. My heart clenched for the pain these two have been and are going through. Church’s life has never been easy and in order to keep the people he cares about happy and safe he separates himself from those he loves. Dixie falls clearly in that category and though she knows there will never be another for her like Church she also knows she can’t have him.

“Never claimed to be the kind of guy that plays fair, pretty girl.”

I devoured each page of this book, eager and desperate for the moments when they both let their guards down and gave in to their wants and desires. I knew that it would never be as simple as it seemed in the late of night in a dark shared room but for those moments I felt the lightness and ease that they felt when they would give in.

‘I rode him hard. I rode him fast. I rode him wild. I rode him rough.’

Dash was all brooding and alpha and while he tried to make it hard to love him it really wasn’t. And Dixie. Dixie was sweet, and happy and light and I just loved her. Her goodness shined through the page and I found myself thinking that she is the kind of friend I would want in my life. The one thing I would say would be that the first twenty percent I had wanted more dialogue but not to the point that it was detrimental to the story. The book was emotional and sexy and proves that Jay is still one of my favorite writers out there.

Review

‘My eyes were glued to that neck, I was struck with a sudden urge to bite it. In a sexy way, mind. And this was odd because I hadn’t wanted to give anything or anyone a sexy bite in over a year. Not even a nibble.’

Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway are two of my favorite authors individually and whenever they come together to write a book nothing short of pure magic happens. The Cad and the Co-Ed is the third book in the Rugby series and like the first two it shines in it’s perfection. Equal parts humor, sexual tension and a captivating story, I was wrapped up and lost in it before I even finished the first chapter.

‘I swallowed stiffly as he placed a scorching kiss on my neck. Actually, it wasn’t scorching. It was butterfly light, but it burned like a brand.’

When Bryan and Eilish hooked up five years ago she thought he was the man of her dreams, until daylight shone through and she realized that the man she gave herself to was simply a drunk and she was just another notch on his headboard. Now they are forced to interact when she becomes the new intern for the Rugby club he plays for. Only he doesn’t recognize her and has no clue the secrets she harbors.

‘I wanted more of her sighs. Louder. I wanted her to say my name, for it to be the only name she uttered.’

This book made my heart sigh in the best way possible. Bryan evolves from a drunk you want to throat punch into one of the most patient and kind book boyfriends ever. The journey to get there isn’t simple and it is riddled with bad choices on both sides but the outcome was beautiful. These two authors have a knack for making you laugh, feel and get turned on all in the same phrase. There is no one else who in my opinion can write like they do and when you marry their styles together it is perfection.

synopsis

He can’t remember the last time he had his wife to himself…
She can’t remember the last time she felt wanted…

Life hasn’t slowed down since Tess and Barrett married over twenty years ago. After carting kids around, making dinner, enduring the stress of jobs, bills, life—it’s no wonder neither of them can remember the last time they had sex.
Or the last time they weren’t too tired to at least try.
Date night no longer consists of wooing, but going to the same restaurant and ordering the same food, then repeating the process.
The magic—is gone.
Life refuses to give them what they need—time alone together, so they take matters into their own hands. After all, a week away in a remote Michigan cabin is just what they need to light the fire in their relationship again.

The only problem? How do you fall back in love with each other when you never fell out in the first place? How do you re-build, from the ground up?

excerpt

EVERYONE HAS GONE HOME from our after-game party. Maggie is spending the night at a friend’s house and, miracle of all miracles, so is Harper. Well, she’s staying at Lauren and Josh’s house. I have a feeling I know how that came to play, but I’m not gonna even bring myself to care that I know Tess discussed our lack of sex lately with Lauren. Hell, I talked to Josh about the same thing. And they’re good friends. They’ve been there once upon a time. Plus, they love Harper and her energy. They seemed excited to have her overnight.

I walk into our bedroom and notice that Tess has candles of all colors, shapes, and sizes lit around the room. I wish I had thought about doing that. I’ve been so focused on getting to the sex part that I’ve neglected the rest of it. She deserves the world, and I know I need to step up my game. I scroll through my phone and find some music to help set the mood that she’d already begun. After finding what I’m looking for, I place it on the docking station that doubles as my charger and alarm clock.

I’m stripping down to my clothes, just what the song is telling me to do, when my beautiful bride walks into the bedroom from the bathroom. Naked. Now, she could have slid on something sexy, like a nighty or lacy thing that pushes her boobs up, but any man will tell you this is way better. So much better, in fact, that I’m suddenly naked. No idea how I managed to get the rest of my clothes stripped so quickly, my clothes flung all over the room. I briefly think that I hope I didn’t throw anything on a candle, but a quick sniff tells me nothing is on fire — except for the spark that ignited between us the second I caught sight of her. She’s beautiful. Even better, she’s mine.

She’s had my heart since I held her hand the day she let me take her home from school when I was just seventeen years old. I was a goner then by that one touch. Then, the next night on our first official date, when we were crossing the street to go to the movie theater, her letting me hold her hand was all it took for my heart to race and my mind to go foggy.

“C’mere,” I command, knowing my girl loves it when I’m a little more demanding in the bedroom. She complies quickly by sauntering over to where I stand next to the bed. I pick her up and throw her playfully on the mattress. She laughs loudly, the sound a direct line to my quickly growing hardness, but it dies quickly when I crawl over top of her and press myself closer to her, not entering her just yet. I know as soon as I do it will all be over.

My mouth descends on hers, and I quickly slip my tongue into her mouth. Mine. I pin her hands above her head and grind myself into her, my message clear as to where this is going.

“Please.” She breathes out when my mouth moves from hers down to her neck, her collarbone, her bare breasts. They’ve gotten bigger, fuller over time. They’re amazing, and I prepare to ravish them.

“Not yet, sweetheart. You know I won’t last,” I mumble around her soft skin and grab her wrist when I feel her hand gliding down my stomach to where I want her the most.

Her back arches off the bed, pressing herself into me even farther. “Just… do-o-o something, Barrett. Please. I need you. So bad…” Her voice is a whimper and she wraps her legs around me, holding me to her.

“I need you, too. But first I’m going to take my time with you.”

“After. We have all night. I just need to feel you first. We’ll go slow next time.”

REVIEW

I’ve enjoyed each installment of Aubrey Bondurant’s Something series so far, and I’d been very much looking forward to Catherine’s story. Bondurant’s writing style and her brand of smutty chick-lit books are always entertaining, sexy, great reads. I’m asked on occasion to name an author who I thought more people should be reading, and unsurprisingly, Aubrey Bondurant is one of those authors the comes to my mind. She’s a very talented author, and I haven’t yet read one of her novels that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. I’m going to be very careful in this review, though, as the hero’s identity is a bit of a spoiler, and I don’t want to give it away.

“Time to do this before I chickened out.”

Catherine is in her mid-thirties and a very successful editor of the top fashion magazine, Cosmo Life. She’s a recognized fashion icon and authority. While she has her professional life in check, her personal life is another story. On the heels of a divorce that she didn’t see coming, she’s floundering in her efforts to rejoin the dating scene. Part of the problem is that she misreads—or just plain misses—the signals and subtle signs that men send her and when she tries, she often misreads them. She has not mastered the subtle art of flirty bantering, and her attempts come off more awkward than seductive. She needs help.

“Maybe there was hope for me yet.”

Enter the masked man, Calvin, and some private lessons at Club Travesty, a high-end, exclusive and discreet sex club. Catherine may have donned a wig and took on the name Kat to mask her easily recognizable identity, but she fully embraced Calvin’s lessons, advice and assignments. So, despite her nearly overwhelming nervousness, Catherine is immersing herself in this experience that is so totally outside of her comfort zone, and she’s feeling more confident than she ever has. Or at least she was until she got the shock of her life at party when she hears a voice she immediately recognizes and turns to look into a pair of all-too-familiar eyes on a face that she knows…

“…keep taking chances. Sometimes the things that make you happy are found when you least expect it.”

As it turns out, Catherine knows the real man behind her masked sex club relationship tutor, Calvin. He runs in the same circles as she does, both professionally and socially. Once that gap is bridged, though, they start seeing each other privately. One of her big concerns was their age difference, he’s several years younger, but he approached their relationship with tremendous maturity and he was so patient and encouraging, it was truly inevitable that she would be swept off her feet by this man. He has his own issues, though, and surprisingly in the end it was his issues that got in the way of a relationship.

“All roads, no matter how rough, lead me here to you.”

Teach Me Something was another well written, well developed, humorous and sexy story about this group of friends that I’ve come to adore. I love this series so much, it’s one I never hesitate to highly recommend.  Aubrey Bondurant’s Teach Me Something gets 4.5 smooches from me!

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

Riveted - cover

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him…even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE EXCERPT:

“I can’t believe it gets worse, Dixie.” She shook her hair at me and I wanted to reach out and touch the bronze strands. They glimmered like they were lit from within. Everything about her was meant to shimmer and shine through the shadows that surrounded her. Eventually that inner glow was going to break free and I hoped I was around to see it. “I didn’t think it could get worse than the guy who wanted you to be third person in a ménage à trois with his wife.”

I sucked back a mouthful of wine at that and shuddered. “Yeah, when he told me it was fine because their kids were with his parents for the weekend I almost threw my water at him. That was bad, but this mother was still the worst. It was a shame because her son was actually really cute and I think if he wasn’t so browbeaten he might actually be a good guy.” I lifted a shoulder and let it fall. “Oh well, you live and you learn.”

Something crossed her beautiful face, something tragic and painful that hurt to look at, but it was only there for a second and then her typical serene and unaffected expression was firmly back in place. “If you’re lucky you get to live. So no more online dating?”

I nodded and finished off the rest of my wine. “No more. There seems to be an infinite amount of crazy out there in the world and I’m a magnet for it.”

They can be whoever they want to be on the internet, Dixie. You’ll never know who you’re dealing with, and that’s dangerous. Church’s warning drifted through my mind and it made me want to hit something. He was right. He also always seemed to be looking out for me, which would be thrilling, exciting, and exactly what I wanted if he had been doing it out of something other than some misguided need to watch out for me because we worked together. If he cared about what happened to me because he cared about me in some way, shape, or form, I would be over the moon. But really it all boiled down to the fact that I was important to the people that were important to him, so he didn’t want to see anything bad happen to me.

I was turning to pour another glass of wine when Poppy and I both started as someone started pounding on the apartment door. I gasped a little as Poppy jumped to her feet in a panic with a startled yelp pealing out of her throat. Alarmed by the human’s distress Dolly started to growl and stalked to the door like the born protector that she was. She let out a sharp bark that had me practically sprinting across the room to see who was causing the commotion so that her gruff growling and sharp yapping didn’t wake up the neighbors.

I glanced at Poppy and frowned when I saw that she was as white as my countertop and looked like she was going to pass out. Her hand was to her throat and her fingers were shaking so badly I could see the tremors all the way across the room. She was terrified. I wanted to fix that for her but I didn’t know how. “Dixie, open the door. I left Kallie and I need a place to crash for a few days.” The voice on the other side of the door was as familiar as my own. His words made me swear out loud as I pulled the door open without another thought given to the fact that Poppy might end up facedown on the carpet.

“You left Kallie?” I barely got the words out before my little sister’s obviously furious and clearly frustrated fiancé barreled into the tiny living space. I shut the door behind him. Dolly went about her typically happy greeting once she realized she knew the tall, lanky, auburn-haired man that was now frantically pacing through my living room, raking his heavily tattooed hands through his messy hair.

“She’s been cheating on me . . . again. I was such an idiot to believe her when she told me it would never happen again after the last time. How could she do this to me after all we’ve been through together?” His heated blue eyes locked on me and I could see he was struggling to keep both his emotions and the moisture trapped in his eyes in check. “We’re supposed to be getting married in a few months.” His voice cracked and I couldn’t stop myself from walking over and wrapping my arms around his trim waist.

“Oh, Wheeler. I’m so sorry.” My sister was an idiot, but in all honesty so was he. My sister didn’t know how to be an adult without him and he didn’t know how to be a family without her. They were scarily dependent on each other and had been since they were kids. Now Kallie was barely twenty-two and had everything I wanted in the palm of her hand—the brand new house Wheeler bought for them to start their lives together, an engagement ring that made my heart squeeze with envy. I would treasure the love and promises she had been given and part of me died every single time I watched my sister be careless and reckless with what Wheeler had handed her. “You can stay here for as long as you need to. Do you want me to call her?” If I did I was going to rip her a new one. I loved my sister dearly, but at the moment I would gladly strangle her with my bare hands.
