The Sexy One by Lauren Blakely Review

From NYT Bestselling author Lauren Blakely comes a sexy new standalone romance…

Let me count the ways why falling into forbidden love is not my wisest move…
1. She works with me every single day.
Did I mention she’s gorgeous, sweet, kind and smart?
2. She works in my home.
Playing with my five-year-old daughter. Teaching my little girl. Cooking for my princess. Which means…
3. She’s the nanny.
And that makes her completely off-limits…But it doesn’t stop me from wanting her. All of her.

***

The other nannies in this city don’t call him the Sexy One for nothing. My boss, the amazingly wonderful single father to the girl I take care of every day is ridiculously hot, like movie star levels with those arms, and those eyes, and that body. Not to mention, the way he dotes on his little girl melts me all over. But what really makes my knees weak are the times when his gaze lingers on me. In secret. When no one else is around.

I can’t risk my job for a chance at something more…can I? But I don’t know how to resist him much longer either…

REVIEW

I’ve been singing Lauren Blakely’s praises through the last three books of hers (Big Rock, Mister O and Well Hung) that I’ve read. This author is a romantic comedy genius, and what she does to bring a male character to life in her books is incredible. No one, at least no other author that I’ve read, has been able to get into the mind of a male character in quite the same way that Blakely does. I don’t know how she’s able to portray these heroes the way that she does, and I don’t care. I’m just rejoicing in the fact that she can and she does.

“…it’s time to get my head on straight and lasso my heart to keep it in check.”

Both Simon and Abby are deeply attracted to each other, but for their own reasons, each is keeping it to themselves. They’re both operating under the assumption that their attraction to the other is unrequited, one-sided and inappropriate. The thing is that they’re both so drawn to each other, their attempts at distance and professionalism are just not working. I absolutely loved watching them dance around each other and their white-hot attraction to each other. It was fun, it was flirty, it was sexy, and this type of back-and-forth, the will-they-or-won’t-they dance they were doing is exactly why I am a devotee of the romance genre.

“I might want her, but I sure as hell can’t have her.”

Simon adores everything about Abby; he’s totally smitten. She’s smart, she’s phenomenal with his daughter, and she’s sexy. The more he gets to know her, the more he’s realizing that she is everything he wants. The problem is that he doesn’t want to jeopardize the role she plays in his daughter’s life as her nanny. That, and he doesn’t want to become the clichéd single dad who is lusting after the nanny. I must say, though, I adored being in Simon’s head as he pined for Abby. His thoughts, his feelings, his crush on her, it’s the stuff giddy, breathless, heart-pounding romances are made of.

“Must. Reign. In. Desire. To. Launch. Self. At. Simon.”

Abby has been lusting after Simon since the very beginning of her employment. The problem is that not only does she love her job, but she needs it, too. She’s become very attached to the Simon’s daughter and is wholly dedicated to her in her role as Hayden’s nanny. The thing is that her attraction to Simon is becoming increasingly difficult to bury and ignore. I really loved Abby, she was such a multi-faceted heroine. She may have played the part of calm and cool as a cucumber on the outside, but inside, she was anything but collected. Her heart called out to this man, and she was struggling to contain it. Not to mention that she was sure, so sure, that everyone could see the little hearts swirling around her head every time he was near.

“…this is one of those moments when something happens… when this thing… shifts from a simmer to a bubbling-over-the-pot boil.”

They have so much in common, and not just where Simon’s daughter is concerned. I loved the way that they bonded, not only over Hayden, but also over languages and nature. There is no way that I can write this review without mentioning their first kiss, though. That kiss… good God, it left me weak-kneed and fanning myself. Hell, I’m pretty sure I was even panting. Thankfully, I was sitting down when I read that scene, or I would have absolutely melted into a puddle of lovesick goo on my kitchen floor. (Read this book, and you’ll see what I’m talking about!) I positively adored Abby and Simon together; this couple just made my heart so very happy.

“Our lips touch, and it’s like a world that was ordinary has now turned extraordinary.”

I’ve read thousands of romance novels over the years (hello, romance novel book reviewer here!). We romance fans always talk about the “swoon” and how a particular hero is so swoony. I truly believed that I had a well and thorough knowledge of exactly what a swoony male lead entailed. I was wrong, so very wrong. Until I met Simon in the pages of The Sexy One, I had no idea what a truly swoon worthy hero was. Simon kept my heart soaring, racing and thumping in my chest from cover-to-cover. Blakely did an incredibly job telling their story because I felt the rush that Abby felt when his attention turned her way, I felt my breath accelerate with hers, and I definitely blushed when she did. By far—BY FAR—this character stole my heart in way that no other male lead character ever has.

I can’t begin to adequately convey how much I loved this book. Without question, The Sexy One is my favorite by Lauren Blakely to date. Without hesitation, I’m giving it 5 smooches, but even with that high rating from me, it still doesn’t feel like enough. So let me sum it up by saying that this book has not only catapulted itself onto my 2016 top favorite books list, but it’s also landed a spot on my all-time top favorites list.

A Love Letter To Whiskey by Kandi Steiner Release Blitz

Title: A Love Letter to Whiskey
Author: Kandi Steiner
Release Date: Oct 13, 2016
Add to Goodreads
It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.
Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.
It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.
It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.
But we can’t start here.
No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.
Back to the beginning.
Back to the very first drop.
This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

Check out our 5 smooches review HERE.

The first time I tasted Whiskey, I fell flat on my face.
Literally.
I was drunk from the very first sip, and I guess that should have been my sign to stay away.
Jenna and I were running the trail around the lake near her house, sweat dripping into our eyes from the intense South Florida heat. It was early September, but in South Florida, it might as well have been July. There was no “boots and scarves” season, unless you counted the approximately six weeks in January and February where the temperature dropped below eighty degrees.
As it was, we were battling ninety-plus degrees, me trying to be a show off and prove I could keep up with Jenna’s cheerleading training program. She had finally made the varsity squad, and with that privilege came ridiculous standards she had to uphold. I hated running — absolutelyloathed it. I would much rather have been on my surf board that day. But fortunately for Jenna, she had a competitive best friend who never turned down a challenge. So when she asked me to train with her, I’d agreed eagerly, even knowing I’d have screaming ribs and calves by the end of the day.
I saw him first.
I was just a few steps ahead of Jenna, and I’d been staring down at my hot pink sneakers as they hit the concrete. When I looked up, he was about fifty feet away, and even from that distance I could tell I was in trouble. He seemed sort of average at first — brown hair, lean build, soaked white running shirt — but the closer he got, the more I realized just how edible he was. I noticed the shift in the muscles of his legs as he ran, the way his hair bounced slightly, how he pressed his lips together in concentration as he neared us.
I looked over my shoulder, attempting to waggle my eyebrows at Jenna and give her the secret best friend code for “hot guy up ahead”, but she had stopped to tie her shoes. And when I turned back around, it was too late.
I smacked into him — hard — and fell to the pavement, rolling a bit to soften the fall. He cursed and I groaned, more from embarrassment than pain. I wish I could say I gracefully picked myself up, smiled radiantly, and asked him for his number, but the truth is I lost the ability to do anything the minute I looked up at him.
It was an unfamiliar, warm ache that spread through my chest as I used my hand to shield the sun streaming in behind his silhouette, just how you’d expect the first sip of whiskey to feel. He was bent over, hand outstretched, saying something that wasn’t registering because I had somehow managed to slip my hand into his and just that one touch had set my skin on fire.
Handsome wasn’t the right word to describe him, but it was all I kept thinking as I traced his features. His hair was a sort of mocha color, damp at the roots, falling onto his forehead just slightly. His eyes were wide — almost too round — and a mixture of gold, green, and the deepest brown. I didn’t coin the nickname Whiskey until much later, but it was that moment that I saw it for the first time — those were whiskey eyes. The kind of eyes you get lost in. The kind that drink you in. He had the longest lashes and a firm, square jaw. It was so hard, the edges so clean that I would have sworn he was angry with me if it weren’t for the smile on his face.He was still talking as my eyes fell over his broad chest before snapping back up to his sideways grin.
“Oh my God, are you fucking blind?!” Jenna’s voice snapped me from my haze as she shoved Whiskey out of the way and latched onto my hand, ripping me back to standing position. I’d barely caught my balance before she whipped around to continue her scolding. “How about you brush that long ass hair out of your eyes and watch where you’re going, huh champ?”
Oh no.
I didn’t even have time to call dibs, I couldn’t even think the word, let alone say it, before it was too late. I watched it, in slow motion, as Whiskey fell for my best friend before I even had the chance to say a single word to him.
Jenna was standing tall, arms crossed, one hip popped in her usual fashion as she waited for him to defend himself. This was her protocol — it was one of the reasons we got along. We were both what you’d call “spitfires”, but Jenna had the distinct advantage of being cripplingly gorgeous on top of having an attitude. She flipped her long, wavy blonde ponytail behind her and cocked a brow.
And then he did, too.
His smile grew wider as he met her eyes, and it was the same look I’d watched fall
over guy after countless guy. Jenna was a unicorn, and men were enamored by her. As they should have been — she had platinum blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, legs for days and a personality to boot. Now, before you go thinking that I was the insecure best friend – I had it going on, too. I worked hard, I was talented – just not at the things traditional high school boys valued.
But we’ll get to that.
“Hi,” Whiskey finally said, extending his hand to Jenna this time. His eyes were warm, smile inviting — if I had to pick the right word for him, just one, I’d say charming. He just oozed charm. “I’m Jamie.”
“Well, Jamie, maybe you should make an appointment with the eye doctor before you run over another innocent jogger. And you owe Brecks an apology.” She nodded to me then and I cringed at my name, wondering why she felt the need to spill it at all. She always called me B — everyone did — so why did she choose the moment I was face to face with the first boy to ever make my heart accelerate to use my full name?
Jamie was still grinning, eying Jenna, trying to figure her out, but he turned to me after a moment with that same crooked smile. “I’m sorry, I should have been watching where I was going.” He said the words with conviction, but lifted his brows on that last line because he and I both knew who wasn’t paying attention to the trail, and he wasn’t the guilty party.
“It’s fine,” I murmured, because for some reason I was still having a difficult time finding my voice. Jamie tilted his head just a fraction, his eyes hard on me this time, and I felt naked beneath his gaze. I’d never had anyone look at me that way — completely zeroed in. It was unnerving and exhilarating, too.
But before I could latch onto the feeling, he turned back to Jenna, their eyes meeting as slow smiles spread on both of their faces. I’d seen it a million times, but this was the first time I felt sick watching it happen.
I saw him first, but it didn’t matter.
Because he saw her.

Review

‘I saw him first, but it didn’t matter. Because he saw her.’

OMG! What did I just read. I started A Love Letter To Whiskey last night and didn’t stop till the last page. I was sleep deprived and tired but there was absolutely no way I could put this beautifully epic book down.

‘This was Jamie, the boy I used to ride around town with, the boy who called me his best friend. And suddenly he was the world’s biggest prick.’

You know that feeling you get deep in your stomach after an elevator drop. That is exactly how I felt while reading most of this book but instead of a normal elevator it was the Tower Of Terror and instead of this being a bad thing it was the best feeling possible. I was gutted and pained but I loved every moment of it.

‘Jamie was whiskey, that much I was sure of. I couldn’t deny the way he burned, the way his taste lingered. Still, no one warned me that once a whiskey girl, always a whiskey girl.’

B and Whiskey’s relationship is never really a relationship. Its non stop hurt and turmoil but it is also non stop beauty and love. I fell for them as teenagers and desperately prayed for them to figure it all out even though I knew from the beginning that the odds were stacked against them. My heart ached for these two who never seemed to be on the same page at the same time and yet I was unable to stop reading in hopes that I would soon get to a part where even if just for a day there moments would align and they would give into what is so clear they both want. It was desperate and pained but it was beautiful and epic too.

‘He asked me for two things: tonight, and one day. But one day never came.’

Kandi has completely outdone herself and set the bar high for angst filled romances.

managed-amazon

managed-amazonIt started off as a battle of wits. Me: the ordinary girl with a big mouth against Him: the sexy bastard with a big…ego.

I thought I’d hit the jackpot when I was upgraded to first class on my flight to London.

That is until HE sat down next to me. Gabriel Scott: handsome as sin, cold as ice. Nothing and no one gets to him. Ever. He’s a legend in his own right, the manager of the biggest rock band in the world, and an arrogant ass who looks down his nose at me.

I thought I’d give him hell for one, long flight. I didn’t expect to like him. I didn’t expect to want him. But the biggest surprise? He wants me too. Only in a way I didn’t see coming.

If I accept his proposal, I leave myself open to falling for the one man I can’t manage. But I’m tempted to say yes. Because the real man beneath those perfect suits and that cool façade just might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And I just might be the only one who can melt the ice around his heart.

Let the battle begin…

Author: Staci Hart
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Joel Anderson doesn’t take anything seriously.

Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he’s not the kind of man you cross, or you’ll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists.

 Annika Belousov takes everything seriously.

Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements — affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn’t take lightly. When she’s tapped to produce a reality show at Joel’s shop, she doesn’t think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way.

The second Annika walks into Joel’s shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she’s not having it. He’s all wrong — too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn’t take her long to find out there’s more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line.

Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he’s found his tonic.

Review

Staci Hart never ceases to surprise me and Tonic was just that; fresh new and surprising I loved every moment of it.

Something about her made me feel reckless, more reckless than usual.

I was lucky enough to read an early copy of Tonic and from the start I knew that Joel and Annika were going to be something else. Polar opposites in every way and yet somehow together they just worked. Typically, characters like Annika’s are not my favorite. She was cold, stern and serious and still somehow Staci made sure we saw her softness and made it impossible not to fall in love with her. Then there is Joel, older, bearded and tattooed with a fun outlook on life you cannot help but be drawn into him. They brought out the worst in each other and the best in each other. They had an intense fire between then which melted her ice façade and only served to make him sexier than he was before. I loved them.

‘Joel and I made no sense. He was charming and annoying and bossy and hairy and all wrong. He was everything I wasn’t. He was everything I’d tried to avoid in my life. He was the opposite of what I needed, of what fit into my plan.’

Staci did a phenomenal job of building Joel and Annika’s relationship, friendship and chemistry. I was on edge waiting for it to all come to the surface. But no fear, there is an epically sexy and amazing first kiss. So much sexual tension was in the air in the build up to them finally kissing that when it finally happens and the sexual tension dams break there is a flood of desire that finally comes to the surface. I was in awe of that kiss. It was what all first kisses should be.

‘And then I did the unthinkable. I pushed my brain down the trash chute, let go of that doorknob, and spun around.

Three steps and I was in his arms.

Two heartbeats and I looked into his eyes.

One breath and I kissed him.’

Tonic is a deviously sexy standalone with characters you’ll that takes place in a tattoo shop and really who doesn’t love a tattoo shop. I highly recommend this sexy and fun book (with a good dash of drama) to all readers. I loved it and know you will too.

Andrea Anderson has no clue of the thoughts churning around in the dark and dangerous ex-con’s head as he enters her classroom. In fact, she’s momentarily lost for words. Not in her entire teaching career has she had a student who looked quite like Stu Cross.
A widow at just twenty-eight, love is something Andie hasn’t considered a part of her life for a very long time. However, when lingering touches turn to whispered words and hot, searching stares, she begins to wonder if maybe she should take a leap of faith.
But Stu is in her class for a reason, and it has nothing to do with love. He’s there to burrow his way into her life and repay a debt, otherwise his family will suffer. Andie is the first person to show him true kindness since he left prison, and though he doesn’t want to mislead her, he doesn’t have another choice.
Before long, Stu can’t tell whether or not he’s acting anymore, and his feelings for Andie could throw all of his carefully crafted plans into complete and utter disarray.

**Can be read as a stand alone.

“Here we are,” I announced before turning to address everyone. “You’ve got half an hour to find a book and then we’ll meet back at the check-in desk at eleven thirty.” They all nodded and moved by me while I levelled my gaze on Stu.

“Have you got a library card?”

He shook his head.

“Okay then, come with me and I’ll grab you an application form. They’ll give you a temporary card so you can check a book out today, then they’ll post the permanent one to you in a week or so.”

“You shouldn’t listen to them,” he said as we stepped through the entryway.

I shot him a glance. “To who?”

“Mary and Susan. You don’t need to change anything about yourself. You’re already sexy as fuck.”

I sucked in a breath at his words, so blunt and to the point. I didn’t think I’d ever been described quite like that before. It made me feel nervous…but a little excited, too. I turned to face him, plastering on a strict look. “You need to learn to stop talking to me like that. I’m your teacher.”

He cocked a brow. “So you can talk to Mary and Susan about their sex lives, but I can’t tell you how sexy you are?”

I placed my hands on my hips. “Yes, that’s exactly right. I’m friends with my students. I’ll talk to them about their lives and give advice when needed. The way you speak to me isn’t friendly, Stu, and I think you know it.”

He shrugged. “I say what I think.”

“Yes, well, try to keep some of the things you think to yourself every once in a while.”

“Oh, I have been,” he said, pausing to slice his teeth across his lower lip. I was beginning to notice it was a signature move of his. “I’ve been keeping things to myself for over a week. Seems only natural that some of it finally slipped out.”

My eyes flickered between his as I shook my head. His persistence was both bizarre and flabbergasting, and yes, a tiny bit flattering, which was I decided to swiftly change the subject. “God, there’s no talking to you. Come on, let’s go find you an application form.”
