Never Too Late by Sloan Johnson Blog Tour and Giveaway

Title: Never Too Late

Series: Home in the Heartland #1

Author: Sloan Johnson

Genre: Adult, M/M Romance

Published: March 7, 2016

Dax: My life ended six years ago. No, really. I was dead on the side of the road following a gruesome motorcycle accident. From what I’ve been told, it’s only because of one stubborn man that I have another chance to make something of my life. I no longer hate him for screwing up what I thought I wanted. I want to thank him. NEED to tell him what his actions mean to me.

Now, I’m headed back to the town I’ve never set foot in even though it’s a huge part of my life. I’m not thrilled about that, but the job offers haven’t exactly been flowing in. They’ll probably think I’m crazy, because there’s no way I won’t be able to look at every guy I walk past, wondering if he’s the one who saved me.

Michael: My entire life, I wanted to save lives. I’d earned a full-ride scholarship and had been accepted to med schools across the country. I was so close to making those dreams a reality until the night held a dying man in my arms. I’ve never been able to get the images of his lifeless body caked in mud out of my head. Even when the paramedics tried to take over trying to save him, I couldn’t let go. I never let go. Eventually, my guilt over not doing more cost me everything but my son. And now, I worry I’ll lose him if I don’t get it together.

I’ve often thought that if I could find him, maybe I could get some closure and finally get my life back on track. Now he’s here and I’m more of a mess than ever. Once the truth comes out, will he keep trying to save me or will he realize that it’s too late?

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.

Synopsis

The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Review

‘It was a realization, maybe a recognition , of something that Hawke does to me that I believe no other man will ever do. I can’t name it. I can’t place it other than it resides deep within me.’

I have been reading and reviewing this series since the very beginning and some I have loved more than others but all have been good. I was slightly hesitant when going into Hawke because some early reviews were stating that while they liked it, they didn’t love it. You would think by now I would realize that each reader gets something different out of each book because while many loved Ryker and fell for his story Hawke is where it is at for me. This story might just be my absolute favorite in the series.

‘Vale may have changed into someone virtually unrecognizable to my old self, but this mouth . . . these lips . . . her taste. It’s all 100 percent the same, and a jolt of lust seizes me hard.’

Hawke and Vale’s story is one that spans many years and comes with a good does of heartache. I think that is why I loved it so much! The angst and hurt that grew from when they were teenagers deeply in love to adults thrown together working for the same organization. Vale killed hopes dreams of living a good life with the girl he loved when she dumped him right before he left to go play hockey. Years have past and both have made great aspirations in their careers and even moved on in their love lives but no one has ever made either feel like they did when they were teenagers in love. But now that they see each other daily they can’t keep trying to deny the hurt and the love that has been simmering since they parted. Secrets are revealed and the two try to become friends again but can they ever really just be friends?

‘For a blessed moment, I don’t question all the hurt between us. I simply hold her.’

The tension between these two really helped build the story and up the drama and I LOVED IT! While still being true to Sawyer’s sexy and fun style Hawke delivered a good does of heart and made me fall in love with these two characters. They were young, reckless and flawed and while the timing wasn’t right and events occurred that drove them away it was clear from the beginning that they belonged together and something about that kind of strong epic love just completely draws me in.

‘I kiss her to shut her up. I kiss her to keep her preoccupied. I kiss her because I’m dying to kiss her again, and it just seemed the right thing to do at the time.’

Hawke can be read as a continuation of the series or as a standalone and I for one highly recommend reading it whether you want to read all the Cold Fury Men or if you just want a good second chance love story. Don’t miss this one!

For Olivia Sullivan, love is more a four letter curse word than a sentiment. Growing up as the daughter of a small town mortician, guys didn’t warm to the fact there were dead people in her house. At thirty, taking over the family business and becoming the town Coroner helped to cement her undateable status. Of course her past sex history didn’t help matters either.

Attempt number one with her first love ended barely before it got started with a horrific latex allergy hospitalization. Attempt number two had him coming and then going with an undiagnosed heart condition. For the past three years, Olivia has closed up shop for fear of what might happen next in the bedroom.

After being forced to go single to her mother’s lingerie shower, Olivia stumbles into an out of town bar with one intention: find an able bodied stud to go home with to end her losing sex streak. Enter Holden Caulfield Mains aka Catcher, who earned his nickname not just from the book he was named for, but for the fact he was sure to catch the attention any woman who came within a five mile radius. Waking up after a night of the most mind blowing sex she could have ever imagined, a horrified Olivia runs away thinking she’s left Catcher behind.

When Olivia’s small town is wracked by its first murder, she never could have imagined her one night stand would reappear in the form of the GBI’s lead investigator. To her mortification, Catcher isn’t ready to let go of their sizzling chemistry, and he doesn’t understand the meaning of no. As things start to heat up between them, the body count starts to rise, and they’re led on a wild goose chase from backwoods mountain Nudist Colonies to altercations with the Dixie Mafia. Can Olivia and Catcher survive to solve the murder while also not succumbing to their explosive passion?

Synopsis

From NYT Bestseller Alessandra Torre…
The sexy serial that exploded on Cosmopolitan.com is now a full-length, standalone novel.

Chloe Madison. That’s me. A former NYU princess who just fell from grace, right off my pampered Manhattan throne and onto the unforgiving steps of Nicole Brantley, socialite and queen bitch. Now, I walk her dog and mix her smoothies. Try to navigate my own problems while fixing all of hers.

REVIEW

OK, I am a HUGE fan of this author.  I have read other works of her’s and mostly  they have been thrillers but I really loved this cover.  I mean, it is seriously adorable, so I wanted to give Love, Chloe a try.  I am so glad that I did because this book was sassy, smart, funny, sweet, and ridiculously sexy!  I fell in love with it and it just might be a favorite of mine of this author’s.

‘Life might be a bitch, buy love?  She kicked that bitch’s ass.’

Oh, Chloe I love your ‘rich girl turned poor girl’ self.  I admit at the beginning of the book that I rolled my eyes a time or two at your ridiculously snobby self but as you grew into a better, hard working, real person, I admit I totally fell for you.  I found myself rooting for your successes and mourning your loses.  The author somehow managed to make me feel incredibly connected to Chloe, like she was a best girlfriend of mine instead of a fictional character.  My understanding is that this book was based on a serial that the author wrote for a magazine but I never read them so I was enraptured, it being my first time meeting Chloe and all.  I also really loved that Chloe’s rich girlfriends in the book weren’t really snobby and were great friends to her.  But I have to admit that one of the best parts was blue collar, sexy as sin, Carter.  Holy moly, this guy is melt your panties sexy and I instantly wanted him for Chloe!

”Then again, my tastes seemed to be changing.  I might have to dip my toe into that pool once or twice.  Just to taste that poison.  Just to have it on my skin.’

But I have to admit I did enjoy rich boy ex-boyfriend, Vic.  I mean he is ridiculously rich and quite alpha!  He got my mojo going, if you know what I mean.  So I bet as you can tell there is a bit of a love triangle happening here.  Just a bit, along with some other very very sketchy stuff.  Like crazy dog watching jobs, and assistant to a queen B!

So, since I have read mostly thrillers where this author shocks the pants off of me, I was wondering if Love, Chloe had any shockers or surprises and it did have a few.  Nothing major but not stuff that I saw coming.  On top of the surprises, you get some hilarious moments, complete sweetness from two crazy for Chloe men, and fabulous love story about a girl who falls in love with herself too.  I just loved this one!  5 Stars!

‘Thats right, bitches.  I couldn’t balance my checkbook and I didn’t know the capital of Iowa but apparently I gave amazing head.’

Synopsis

What’s worse than a cocky new guy at school? A cocky new guy with a killer body and the attention of every female at school. Hadley can tell the minute she lays eyes on Caynan that he’s someone to avoid. He may have looks and charm, but he’s also got heartbreak written all over his pretty face.

Unfortunately for Hadley, Caynan has his sights set on her. She’s the one girl who doesn’t want him. The one girl who’s turned off by his charm. The one girl who challenges him like no other. And, though she couldn’t possibly know the truth about him, she seems to be the one girl who really sees him.

But with Caynan, things aren’t at all what they seem. His secrets have secrets and everything out of his mouth straddles the line between truth and fiction. He knows better than to get involved with anyone, especially with his time limited in the new town, but he just can’t seem to get Hadley out of his mind. Too bad for him, secrets never remain secrets for long.

Review

God, I am so mad at myself.  Why do you ask?  Because usually when I am reading a book I highlight and make a million notes about what is going on and my favorite parts so that I can write my review easily.  And, you know what?  I didn’t highlight or take a single note and here is why!  I was in this story.  I mean, seriously glued to it like a crazy person.  Not one single note.  Not one single highlight.  Gah!  I am really mad at myself but all I can say to the author is “Way to go J. Nathan, you made me forget.  You brought me so far into your world that I was living it and so in the moment that I simply forgot about everything else.'” This book is just fabulous and probably my favorite so far from this author.

I took a chance on author J. Nathan by picking up a book of hers one day on netgalley and now every time I see a book of hers on there I snatch it up.  I love when I find an author I love purely by taking a chance.  Not on a recommendation or hearing about a certain book.  It feels like fate when I find these gems because I have since read three books of hers and have loved every one of them but Before Hadley really took the cake.  And this is why.:  The angst!  Oh, the ungodly amount of angst.  The rip out your heart, stomp all over it and throw it the garbage disposal angst.  God, this book was hard.  Mostly because I seriously didn’t expect it to go the way it did.  Because I loved Caynan too much for that to happen.  Because I sympathized with him and just knew that the author wouldn’t do that to me.  But she did, and it hurt so good.  Lord mercy, all of this author’s books touch on subjects that hurt and are hard but this one really was just so sad and difficult and I simply loved every stinking minute of it.

Seriously, get this one right now if you love a book that is sexy, sweet, amazing, and puts your through the emotional wringer.  I adored it and cannot recommend it enough.  Author J. Nathan I love to hate you!  I love to hate you.

Synopsis

Eden Walker used to be a good girl. She followed the rules, obeyed her parents, and reaped the benefits. Until the night one wrong step showed her that all that glitter is not gold. Now she’s starting over, trying to do things on her own terms, and find the passion she’s only dreamt about.

Sebastian Stone never expected to find love. His past is too painful for him to imagine letting someone in enough to love. He’s happy focusing on his security company, and he’s happy with his one-night-stands. Until he bumps into Eden, a blast from his past.

Sebastian makes Eden realize she’s still scared to follow the passion she knows is missing from her life. Eden is the woman for him, but can Sebastian convince Eden to follow her dreams all the way through? Or will circumstances beyond her control pull them apart?

REVIEW

The past versus the future is the battle for both Sebastian and Eden. Can they both let go of their pasts? And let go of some of the rigid control they crave and live by because of  previous traumatic experiences? So they can maybe begin to live their lives to the full and maybe even trust each other enough to give their hearts, which will allow them both to have some well deserved beauty in their lives.

“I don’t just mean do you trust that I won’t hurt you, but do you trust that I know what’s best right now? That I know what you want, how you want it? That I know what you need? Do you trust me to do all that?”

A really beautiful and intense love story about two people who have had horrible experiences and have horrible parents; a couple who deserve safety, security, love and beauty after everything they have been through.

“You still haven’t figured it out, Eden. With me, you’re able to lose control. That’s why this works. It’s one of the main reasons it works.”

Eden was really a female lead I could look up to. She has faced such a traumatic experience and suffered under her awful parents who are really no parents at all and yet she remains strong, independent and determined to live her life away from her controlling parents and not let the past destroy her.

“Because that’s all I do, Sebastian. You are all I think about. You fill my vision until there is nothing else. You’re all I see. All I feel.”

Sebastian is definitely an alpha male and has built up strong defences and high walls to protect himself. After watching his father fall quickly in love and even quicker out of it he is determined to never let a woman get close enough for that to happen. But his knight in shining armour persona comes through when he sees Eden having a panic attack and from them on he knows he needs to cherish her, protect her, and maybe even love her.

“With Sebastian, she could let go, she could trust herself with him around her, she could push herself to limits that she hadn’t even dared to think about until now.”

This was just a really beautiful story of two people falling in love; two people who truly deserved it but also two people who have suffered and so their relationship doesn’t happen easily and they both have to overcome issues. Love, friendship, heartache, trauma, trust and strength are all present in this story which kept me gripping my kindle tightly and crossing my fingers hoping both Eden and Sebastian got their happily ever after!

REVIEW

This is the RC Boldt’s debut novel, and I have to be honest here, folks, I’m struggling and I’m torn. There were a lot of things that I liked about this book – which is making it extremely difficult for me to write a less than stellar review – but there were also some problems that made reading this book a very arduous task for me.  Now, let me preface all of this by saying that these are my own personal preferences and some people may not have the same reactions to these issues as I did.  So, I’m going to focus more on that in this review than my usual summarization of the story.

The vast majority of this book was told in the third person omniscient point of view. Now I realize, some of you are probably thinking, “what the hell are you yammering on about, Danielle?” Well, really quick for those who don’t know, third person omniscient point of view (TPOPOV) is a method of storytelling in which the narrator (a third person who is not part of the story) is privy to the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Essentially, it’s a retelling of the events of the story, in real time, by a someone who is not only observing them unfold but also has the benefit of knowing what the characters are thinking and feeling without the characters having to express their thoughts or feelings outwardly. The use of pronouns such as “he” or “she” are the telling hallmarks of the TPOPOV.  Lots of books are told in third person POV, like Pride and Prejudice for example, and the vast majority of the time I don’t mind it. But in this instance, where there were randomly interspersed, and often awkwardly placed, shifts from the third person to first person point of view, the experience was jarring and disjointed. It was like ‘literary’ stumbling for me because these point of view shifts were often quite abrupt.

For example, during the first intimate scene, instead of reading this scene as a first person portrayal, it was basically told to me in third person voice, and it just didn’t work. It was almost as if the narrator and I were standing out in the hall while the two main characters went at it in the bedroom. The narrator was in the doorway watching events unfold in the bedroom and TELLING me what was going on. I didn’t observe, feel or experience anything – everything that was happening was relayed back to me, kind of like a sportscaster’s play-by-play, and it was done in an almost matter-of-fact manner as well. (Which was another problem in and of itself – lots of matter-of-fact type descriptions and recounting of events going on.) When I spoke to my blogger bosses about this book and how I was feeling, I asked them if they had ever taken their kids to the library for story time. Of course, being book bloggers, they said yes. I said that reading this story for me was like that: I was sitting crisscross-applesauce style on the floor at the librarian’s feet while she read this to me.

The pace of this book was very, very slow, I actually fought against the urge to skim and skip ahead at times, and I think that can also be attributed to the drawn-out nature of a TPOPOV narration. If it had been told in first person, or “real time,” I think it would have moved faster or, at least, it would have felt like it did.  Generally speaking, my preferred romantic hero is a much more alpha male than this book’s hero was. Yep, folks, you heard it right: I like ‘em bossy and dominant, determined and dirty. And Mac, while he was a really nice guy, he just did not embody any of the traits of my ideal male romance story lead. He was just so nice. Which leads me to another one of my issues – everything was just so nice. Nothing hot, everything was a nice, safe lukewarm. Even the most angsty portion of the book, the ‘misunderstanding’ that tears them apart, didn’t cause me to have any strong emotions – no wrenching gut, no aching heart, no sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. There just was no feeling like what they were facing was a potential deal-breaker or like it could possibly be something that they might not be able to work through. This was a comfy-slippers, fluffy-robe type of story, not a garters, fishnets and stilettos one. Know what I mean? Nothing wrong with comfy, nothing at all, but for me, my personal taste is a story that has a much edgier tone to it.

There were elements of this story that I really did like, though, and it is by no means all doom and gloom here. I really liked all of the characters a lot. This was a fun and quirky group of friends, there wasn’t a single one of them that I didn’t like. The author planted seeds for future books that I can easily admit do interest me. Will they be enough for me to one-click in the future? I don’t know right now, I’m on the fence. But, if your tastes tend toward a story that is a bit on the sweet side, one with just a little bit of heat, a light and easy, low angst, comfy-cozy, tame story, then this book would absolutely fit the bill, and I’m confident that you’ll love RC Boldt’s Wildest Dream.

He laughed softly. “I have another one, I’ll go change it. We just have

to…” His grip tightened, and he drew me closer to him as he turned me so we

switched places. One hand moved from my

arm and to my back as his voice dropped. “…trade places. Because it’s on

the shelf.”

“Right,” I whispered. When he shifted us, I

dropped the paper, but I really couldn’t have cared less now that his arms were

around me. Without thinking, I reached out and held my breath when my fingers

brushed against smooth skin. I trailed to

the side and found his hair. Moving along the side of his face, I stopped right

before his chin and hesitated. Touching him was so ballsy. He might not want me doing this.

When I stopped, he let out a soft groan, and his fingers moved under the hem of

my shirt, barely grazing the skin of my lower back. I took a shaky breath and

raised my other hand, tracing the planes of his face, the one line across his

forehead, the rise and fall of his glasses, the bridge of his nose, and the

indent in his chin, so slight it was barely noticeable. His thin top lip. His

full bottom one. Over and over again, and his breaths came out deep as his

fingers kept moving lightly against my bare skin.

I whimpered as he put his other hand on the side of my face. Fucking whimpered.

“I like this,” he whispered, as his fingers followed my

eyebrows, over the piercing and down toward my cheek.

I kept tracing his lips as he touched me, all too aware

of the strong ache between my legs.

“Me, too,” I breathed.

My pulse echoed in my head as his hand rested under my

chin with his thumb on my lip ring. Neither one of us moved.

I couldn’t fucking handle it anymore. “Ethan?”

“Yes?” his soft voice replied.

“Kiss me already.”
