BOOK SUMMARY

When Sloane Avery stops to help a stranded driver, she finds more than a broken down car on the side of the road. Twenty-year-old Luke Evans is faster and sexier than her Maserati, but she’s not interested in taking him for a test drive. Despite their differences and Sloane’s dislike for his Jack and Coke fueled lifestyle, feelings grown between the two. But, when the loss of his little brother sends Luke spiraling, he seeks comfort in Sloane’s arms and ends up between her sheets. The morning after, Sloane’s ready to confess she loves Luke, until she walks in on him getting serviced-by her sister.

That was five years ago, practically a different lifetime and definitely a different Sloane. Before she’s been hardened by booze, sex, and as much distance as she could get from the past. Now, called home by a family emergency, she’s determined to hold onto her heart the next time she sees Luke.

But Sloane’s not the only one who’s changed. With a successful business and a near-perfect girlfriend, Luke’s turned his life around. Only the reappearance of Sloane and the reminder of his biggest mistake can put a dent in his plans.  Luke is set on fixing what he’s broken, even if it might cost him more than the comfortable life he’s built himself, but Sloane is having none of it. She’ll do anything to be sure he doesn’t get close enough to find out the truth-she’s still in love with him.

“You’re late!” Gran calls out, not even bothering to lift her eyes from the register.

I bustle through the dining room into the kitchen, nearly colliding with Blaire in the process. Reflexively, she readjusts the plates balanced on her arm and bumps back through the door.

“You’re late!” she yells back at me.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m late,” I grumble under my breath. I wouldn’t have been if I’d followed my better instincts and blown right past the disabled Wrangler, but just as I decided to keep right on going, my foot eased off the gas and I slammed on the brakes. I’ve always been a sucker. One day it’s going to get me in trouble.

I’m tying my apron on when the door swings back open and Blaire reappears. Her brown hair is pulled back in a loose ponytail and her green eyes are glittering. “Do you know how many tables I’ve had to juggle by myself while you were moseying your ass in today?”

I roll my eyes at her and give the apron strings a final tug. “I wasn’t moseying. Some guy was stranded on the side of the road, so I stopped to help.”

“Please tell me you’re joking.”

When I just stare at her, she gives me a harder stare back. “You don’t just stop to help random people. The guy could have been an ax murderer or a serial killer.”

I scoff and wave a dismissive hand her way as I turn to roll some silverware. “He wasn’t an ax murderer, he was just a guy whose car broke down and who didn’t have his phone.”

She peeks through the window in the door, surveying the tables. “Convenient.”

I stack the rolled sets of silverware in a pile next to me, glad to see the routine of it is coming back to me quickly. It’s been years since I helped out around Gran’s Diner, but it’s almost like I never left.

“Yes, Blaire, it was very convenient for him that his car broke down and he had no phone. He must have known I’d be driving down that stretch of road and staged the whole thing.”

Her footsteps echo as she walks across the room, and I turn just in time to catch the rag that’s flying at my face. “You’ve got crap on your leg.”

I wipe at the smeared grease stain, scrubbing to get it off until my skin is red. “Is that grease?”

I laugh. “Actually, yes. I offered to take a peek under the hood of the car.” The dangerous glint to her eyes dims a fraction. “Seriously? Why?”

“Honestly, I thought it would be kind of funny. Although, come to think of it, he didn’t look all that amused.”

Her eyes narrow as she looks at me, and she takes another peek out front. “The next table is yours, by the way.” Her first sentence nearly collides with the second. “Who was the guy?”

I find another smudge of grease on my hand and get to work on that. “Luke . . . I don’t know. I didn’t get his last name.”

“Luke Evans?” she asks, her hands finding their way down to her bossy hips.

Didn’t I just say that I didn’t get his last name? I throw the rag back at her, which catches her on the shoulder before plopping down onto the tile floor. “He could be Luke Skywalker for all I know.”

She toes the towel and kicks it into the sink. “Really tall?”

I nod.

“Killer blue eyes, long-ish brown hair, fucking gorgeous?” Her voice rises as she speaks, like someone is accidentally leaning on the volume button of the remote.

“Um, I guess? He had sunglasses on, so I couldn’t really see his eyes. He was at that party last night. The one who wiped out at my feet? You know, the guy who was letting that girl fondle him in front of everyone?” Gross. There’s no bigger turnoff than a guy who thinks the world lives and dies in his pants.

She bursts out laughing. “Did you just say ‘fondle’? God, Sloane.” While she continues cackling, I start stacking clean dishes on the shelf.

“Well, let me add a last name to the first one you got. That is Luke Evans, and he is definitely the guy who lets girls fondle him in public. Hell, I’d definitely let him—”

I throw up a hand to cut her off. “Please, don’t.” “Don’t say it or don’t do it?”

I shudder. “Either. With how many holes he’s probably stuck that thing in, I bet it’s about to shrivel up and die.”

She hops onto the counter next to me, swinging her legs back and forth so that her heels drum against the metal cabinets. “Can I at least talk to him, Miss Prude? I hear he’s quite the charmer.”

“You’re joking, right?” I give her an incredulous look as a plate dangles from my hand. Her perfectly plucked eyebrows draw together. “No, are you?”

I slide the last plate into the cabinet and shut it. “He barely managed to string together a multisyllabic sentence, and I had to repeat my name for him. Twice. I’m pretty sure the guy took the short bus to school.”

Blaire’s mouth drops open. “You did not just say that.”

I already want to take it back. I’m not a mean person. Ever. But guys like that—I can’t stand them. Especially not after . . . Nope. Grabbing that intrusive thought around the throat, I shove it back into the box of things I never want to think about again.

She chews on her lip as she studies me, seeing straight through me like she always does. At least I have the same power over her. It must be a sister thing. That or the fact that we grew up in each other’s back pocket with less than a year separating the two of us in age.

Hopping down off the counter, she takes another glance through the window. When she turns back around, her eyes are glittering again. “Gran sat table seven; it’s all yours.”

I bump through the door and fumble in my apron for my pen, not really paying attention. “Good morning, my name is—”

“Sloane.”

My eyes snap up as I finally find the pen and stare straight into the prettiest blue eyes I’ve ever seen. They’re nicer than mine, which is saying something, since I really love my eyes. These eyes are such a pale blue, like Winterfresh gum, and so unexpected when they’re surrounded by that overly sun-kissed skin and dark brown hair.

“You again.” The words slip out from between my lips before I even realize I’ve said them.

He looks slightly taken aback, and his smile slips a notch. He gestures across the table. “This is Archer.”

I hold out my hand to him, but I’m still holding the pen. I shuffle it back into my other hand  and  try again.  “Nice  to  meet  you.”  He shakes my hand, trying to keep the look of amusement from his face but failing.

“What can I get you guys?”

“French toast and coffee for me, please,” Archer says, handing me back his plastic-coated menu.

“I’ll have coffee too, French fries, banana pancakes, and a chocolate milkshake.” Luke offers up his menu and waits for me to comment on his order. That combination of food plus the way his eyes are squinting at me are leading me to believe he’s nursing quite the hangover.

“Coming right up.”

I can feel his eyes on my ass the entire way back to the kitchen. Pig.

Synopsis

When Sloane Avery stops to help a stranded driver, she finds more than a broken down car on the side of the road. Luke Evans is faster and sexier than her Maserati, but with her heart still on the mend, she’s not interested in taking him for a test drive. Despite their initial disdain for each other, emotion and passion simmer, complicating their fragile friendship. But when a tragic loss and devastating betrayal send them spiraling, their growing love isn’t enough to save them.

That was five years ago, practically a different lifetime and definitely a different Sloane. Before she’s been hardened by booze, sex, and as much distance as she could get from the past. Now, called home on a family emergency, she’s determined to hold onto her heart the next time she sees Luke.

Except Sloane’s not the only one who’s changed. Luke’s turned his life around. Only the reappearance of Sloane and the reminder of his biggest mistake can put a dent in his plans. Luke is set on fixing what he’s broken. But with her emotions boiling to the surface, Sloane needs to decide if falling in love is life’s greatest gift or its cruelest joke.

Review

‘Contemplating anything happening between Luke and I is emotional suicide.’

I have extreme mixed emotions about this book and struggled to come up with a rating as well as what to write in my review. On one hand it was well written with a plot that kept me constantly engaged and turning pages. For the first 30 percent of this book I read it like any other, reading when I could then going about normal life, then it started to pick up and around 45 percent something happened that made real life impossible and I read the rest in one sitting.

‘Luke Evans didn’t just shatter my heart, he pulverized it.’

Sloan and Luke could not be more different. She’s rich and he is from the “other” side of town. Normally they wouldn’t even meet but when Sloan and her sister Blaire come to his neighborhood to spend the summer with their Grandmother the two cross paths and their lives are forever changed. So much happens in this book and several of my personal buttons were pushed. If you have sensitive triggers please feel free to message me and I can help guide you to if this book is for you. The first half of this book I adored Sloan and Luke truly pushed my buttons but what surprised me is that the second half of the book (which is years later) those roles are completely reversed and Luke started to improve in my eyes and I desperately wanted to slap Sloan.

‘Sloan is like a drug, and I just can’t seem to get her out of my system.’

Luke and Sloan’s journey to a happily ever after was a truly difficult one but when we got there (and we do get there) it was like a breath of fresh air. The one thing I would say about the book is that for how hard the journey was I felt the end was a tad rushed. Their struggle was so difficult I almost hoped it would have a cliffhanger just so there would be more time to hash it all out, which is bizarre for me since I typically prefer standalones. But still Until We Break was an angst filled New Adult love story that anyone who enjoys to be filled with extreme emotions will definitely enjoy!

Chris: Is Mia okay?

Brooke: She’s fine, thanks. Back asleep already.

After replying, I debated asking him how he was doing. But before I could decide, my phone buzzed again.

Chris: It’s me.

I stared at my phone in confusion as the sound of a knock broke the silence in the room. Still holding my phone, I stood up.

Not sure what to expect from Chris when I opened the door, I walked into the kitchen and paused with my hand on the doorknob, hesitating for a minute. I hadn’t imagined what happened before. He’d almost kissed me. I didn’t know if he was coming back to talk about that or… his credit card. Of course. I had put it in my pocket as we walked in, forgetting to give it back to him.

I pulled the plastic out of my pocket and opened the door. Chris stood on my doorstep, his eyes restless as clutched his phone.

“Hey,” I said, holding up the credit card. “Did you come back for—”

I didn’t finish my question. As I spoke, Chris took two big steps inside. He cupped my face in his hands, still holding his phone. “No,” he muttered and crashed his lips against mine.

Holy shit. I stood frozen, gripping my phone in one hand and his credit card in the other. But then the reality of what was happening sunk in. Chris’s warm mouth was against mine, his tongue brushing against my closed lips, and I was standing still like a dumbass and not kissing him back.

Before my brain could tell my mouth to start working, he broke away.

“Brooke,” he whispered. His lips brushed against mine as he spoke, sending electric shocks throughout my body.

He backed up, hands still cradling my chin, his phone smashed against my face as his eyes locked with mine, waiting for my reaction. Not breaking eye contact, I placed my phone and his credit card on a small table next to the door. Reaching up, I pried his phone out from between his hand and my chin, and laid it on the table as well.

Then I sprang up on my tiptoes, grasped his shoulders for leverage, and pulled him back to me.

Review

Brooke has a beautiful little girl called Mia who she loves more than anything and she thinks that Mia and her family are all she needs in her life because of the awful thing that happened in her past. But then Chris moves in next door and she starts to have feelings she thought she would never have again. Chris also has a secret that makes him not want a relationship; but maybe these two broken people can repair each other with the help of a beautiful little girl? And maybe these two meet at just the right time to help each other get through another horrible situation.

“My eyes widened as I finally accepted the feelings I’d been having all weekend. I didn’t want him to leave because I liked him. I was so fucked. The first time I felt something in years, and it was for a guy who didn’t date.”

I really loved this book. It gave me all the feels and was slammed full of emotion. It’s an easy going book, you know something awful has happened to both Brooke and Chris and when they help each other through that, another situation happens that will pull at your heart strings and make u beg to the reading gods that everything turns out okay.

“I really want this to work,” he whispered, his lips brushing against me as he kept talking. “I don’t know how else to put it. I want this to work so badly, and I know you don’t trust people easily.” He moved back, so he was looking into my eyes again. “I’m going to do everything I can to earn that, Brooke. I swear I will.”

Brooke and Mia were both so loveable. Strong mother, strong daughter with the two of them against the world. Their bond was unbreakable and beautiful. Brooke really was an amazing woman, a great mum, strong, brave, independent and always fighting for the best for her daughter. Mia was a bundle of joy and happiness who you just knew would light up a room.

“Chris felt so good, everything about him. His hard chest, his tight arms, those big hands pressing into my back, pinning me against him. But my favorite thing was his mouth exploring mine, needy and giving at the same time.”

Chris was our hero. A sweet, kind and quiet man but as the story developed you see his sexy, protective and strong side. His dedication to both Mia and Brooke was so adorable and the way he overcomes his own sad past to be there for them both made my heart sigh.

“I want to memorize this,” he said. “You look like a damn goddess and you’re mine. I know you were before but now … I finally have everything I’d given up dreaming about.”

This is such a roller coaster ride filled with emotion. It’s tough going for a while and when you think everything is working out…BAM another heartbreaking story line happens and you are right back to holding your breath and hoping that everyone gets their HEA! Highly recommend this story to those who want an emotional read, with loveable characters and a excellent story line.

EVERYTHING CHANGED IN AN INSTANT.
I thought I knew what was important, but one phone call sent my life into a tailspin.
Alone and afraid, I clung to the one man I shouldn’t. I was warned about him and told to stay away.
“He’s dangerous,” they said.
But the man who could hurt me the most, gave me the greatest comfort.
“He’s not who they think,” I told myself.
But just like an illusion, things are never what they seem.

Review

I have been putting off writing the review for this book for a couple of weeks now.  It seems silly, really, because I have a million things to say about it, but I find myself worried that I won’t be able to adequately convey how much I adored November 9.  How it took me back to Colleen’s early days of Slammed and Hopeless; two of my most favorite books ever.  How I lived and breathed this book until the very last page.  How this is book is EVERYTHING!

‘A body is simply a package for the true gifts inside.  And you are full of gifts.  Selflessness, kindness, compassion.’

It’s simple, really.  Colleen’s words, I mean.  Her writing is clean, simple and easy to read.  But what really makes this book so incredibly special is the story.  Colleen manages to take a book that we think we have all read before, maybe many times over and put a completely different spin on it.  She makes it shiny and brand new and unputdownable.

“I hope the entire state of New York laughs at you!”

I admit that I have probably read books that had a more sad premise than November 9 but somehow Colleen managed to slowly draw every emotion out of me.  I often found myself laughing at Ben and Fallon’s conversations early on.  Then the angst hit and it was so hard.  It is the gut wrenching kind of pain and oh the tears; so many fell for these two sweet people.

“Why didn’t you tell me that the foundation you taught me to stand on is made from quicksand?”

You have read the synopsis above so you know what the book is about!  But you will find yourself constantly surprised at the little twist and turns through out;  Ben and Fallon’s hilarious banter,  the changing of these two young people as they grow and discover more about themselves, old ones gone and new born.  It is as heartwarming as it is devastating and it took me on one hell of an emotional roller coaster.

There are just too many things to list that I loved about this book but one particular thing that really stood out to me as avid reader and book blogger are the references to romance novels and book boyfriends.  I just loved that so  much.  Every remark made in reference to romance novels just made me smile.

“Do fictional boyfriends cry as much as I do?”

“Only the really great ones.”

So go ahead and pick this one up now and I dare you not to fall in love with the ultimate book boyfriend Ben Kessler.  I challenge you to not read this in one sitting.  November 9 will have you wishing you could unread it so that you could read it all over again!   This book rocked my world. I am wrecked in the best possible way. I want to give this book every star in the sky.

About RIDE HARD:

Brotherhood. Club. Family.

They live and ride by their own rules.

These are the Raven Riders…

Raven Riders Motorcycle Club President Dare Kenyon rides hard and values loyalty above all else. He’ll do anything to protect the brotherhood of bikers—the only family he’s got—as well as those who can’t defend themselves. So when mistrustful Haven Randall lands on the club’s doorstep scared that she’s being hunted, Dare takes her in, swears to keep her safe, and pushes to learn the secrets overshadowing her pretty smile.

Haven fled from years of abuse at the hands of her criminal father and is suspicious of any man’s promises, including those of the darkly sexy and overwhelmingly intense Ravens’ leader. But as the powerful attraction between them flares to life, Dare pushes her boundaries and tempts her to want things she never thought she could.

The past never dies without a fight, but Dare Kenyon’s never backed down before…
