Synopsis

It’s finally my time.

Time to escape from my mother, her crazy antics and questionable morals. I’m getting the heck out of Dodge, leaving the trailer park, to make something of myself. Everything was fine until I walked into The Unacceptables’ bar and met Abel Hellock. With his gorgeous muscles, tattoos, motorcycle and perfect smile, my knees quaked. This is my third book by Kristen Hope Mazzola and still she has not let me know. a quick and easy read it was the perfect way to pass a lazy afternoon. While I have read several step-brother books and several MC books Unacceptable was very different than most in those categories. The heart of those differences falls to the male character. Gruff and rugged, Abel is all man and all alpha but unlike many step and MC books what he is not is mean. He is super protective but still a loving and compassionate man when it comes to Cricket.

Cricket is running from a past she would like to forget, a former stripper who lived with her dead beat mom in a trailer park, Cricket figures there is no where to go but up so she searches out the dad who loved her but still left her. She needs answers and closure. But while looking for her dad she can’t help but fall for Abel, the sexy MC VP and bar owner. Abel is everything she never thought she would have in a man, including being the step-brother she never knew she had. But once she finds out she might be too deep in this to let him go.

Unacceptable was vastly different yet no less enjoyable than the other books by the author I have read. The only thing I could have asked for more would be that I would have loved if it was a bit longer. I LOVED Abel and really would have enjoyed getting more out of both him and them as a couple. Still, the story was complete and never  felt rushed or cut off so for those who are looking for a hot low angst story with a gritty and slightly taboo twist this one is perfect for you.

DH Sidebottom!  How do you do this to me?  How do you make me love the nastiest and most horrible of people?  How do you make me sympathize with them, love them, lust after them?  It is quite disturbing.  You are simply the queen of the book boyfriend anti-hero.  Isaac is no different.  Goodness, I love this story as much as Mae’s and god knows I was not expecting that because that book was amazing.

The first two books in this series are about Mae and Daniel and this book is about Mae’s sister, Connie and her other half Isaac.  I definitely recommend reading the first two books in this series because you meet Connie and Isaac in Daniel’s book but that is them in the present.  This book takes you back to their beginnings so that you can understand them better.  Whew, this journey was hard and full of strife, pain, and grief.

“The Pain inside me will forever be irreparable, Shadow.”

This book gives you the story of how Connie became a Phantom and how she fell in love with Isaac, who honestly I did not much love in the previous books but man, I fell in love with him in this one.  He is everything good and bad rolled up into one person.  He is Connie’s savior and tormentor.

“You’re mine, Shadow.  And not even death will take you from me.”

Like most DH Sidebottom books, The Beginning of Connie and Isaac is emotional, dark, raw, and sexy as all get out.  It brings all the feels with a good does of WHAT THE HELL?  That is why I adore her books.  Fantastic and eloquent writing and they are never quite what I expect.

Adaley had her life mapped out for her; gymnastics, gymnastics and gymnastics. Until an injury turned that dream into a nightmare and she decides she has to escape her safe boyfriend and preacher father and go to university away from anyone she knows. When she gets there she meets her match in the form of Ryle. A guy she feels instant attraction for but who by his own admission is bad news, with demons he doesn’t want anyone to know about. Will these two help fix each other or will they tear each other apart?

“I’m frightened that he—anyone—will see me for what I am. A poser. A girl who’s desperately trying to be something she’s not.”

This was a really enjoyable read; it was entertaining, thrilling, funny, romantic and with an absolute shocker of an ending that you will never see coming!

“He was no longer a scared little boy fighting through the depths of other people’s depravity just to survive. He was Ryle Benson, baseball extraordinaire.  He was a survivor.”

I did love Adaley’s character, she was brave and had courage in her decision to move away and start new and she wasn’t going to let anyone walk over her. She had a fierce and sassy personality that was easily likeable. There were some moments when I wanted her to be stronger and stand tall like she had been but these moments were rare and she always came back to her independent and strong character. Her story moved me, I felt her pain when her dream died and I admired her drive to still make something of her life!

“Our story is just beginning. Don’t ruin it with tales from the past,” he rasps into my ear.”

I adored Ryle!! I loved his moody side, I loved his funny side, I loved his caring side. He was complex but with very good reason and the broodiness just made him intriguing and sexy. Yes supporting characters were great as well! I loved the brother and sister; they added some much needed lighter elements to the story and I’m actually really excited to get Taylor’s story.

“We can’t stay broken forever. I won’t make it through another day without you. We can’t sort this out together unless we forgive one another for our mistakes.”

The plot was unique in a way; I had never met a character with Adaley’s back story. The romance side was both sweet and sad, exciting and unexpected and we had little bits of everything; drama, laughter, sadness and the complete and utter surprise of an ending. I have to say I didn’t love the ending, I understand why the author wrote it that way but for me it was too sudden, there was no build up and it happened in the last page of the story…just like BANG, there’s the ending and then epilogue.

“My heart was black before you came into my life. It was tainted by a past that taught me far too much about life in a short period of time, but you changed it back to a vibrant red.”

Overall though this was a perfect summer read for those wanting a romance with an edge.
