BEFORE & AFTER Synopsis:

Rike and Peyton fell in love in college.

A boy from the wrong side of the tracks, covered in ink and crooning in a bar is the last person a straight laced girl with a art major should fall for, but his rough edges made her jagged, alive, shaving away the coddled southern princess and revealing a soul wild and brilliant.

They fell in love, despite her family and his past and all the reasons why it wouldn’t work–and with their best friends, they made a life. Everyone was supposed to live happily ever after.
They, more than anyone, knows that life doesn’t go according to plan.

Rike and Peyton fell in love in college. A boy with a guitar, and a poet’s heart, and a girl with freckles dusted over her nose, a perfect fucking fairy tale.

But what happens when the fairy tale doesn’t fall apart–but is forgotten?

Excerpt

“You’re girl was late,” Scotty rasps as we land on two stools at the bar. It’s late and the crowd of sorority girls has thinned to almost nothing, although a pair is nursing Cosmos and watching us speculatively.

Surprisingly, Scott’s ignored them completely.

“Need anything, boys?” Manda asks as she sways past, giving Scotty a flirty smile. He grins at her, letting his gaze sweep over her.

My best friend is a fucking slut. But with Manda, it’s all flirting and no action. She’d take him up on it—she’s made that very clear. But Scott doesn’t fuck where he works, and Barrie’s has been too good for us to risk screwing it up for a quick fuck.

Which is good, because I’d have to kick his ass if he touched her. She might be a little too friendly and a little desperate, but she’s a cute kid and I like her.

“Bourbon, Manda,” he says, and she glances at me questioningly. I nod and she pours the drinks. Scotty glances at me. “What are you waiting on?”

I shrug and grit my teeth. Scotty twists and gives her a look over his shoulder. “Fine. Stay here and keep Manda company. I’m going to introduce myself to your siren.”

I jerk him back by the collar of his shirt before he can take more than two steps and throw him back against the bar. “Back the fuck off, Scott,” I growl.

He grins, a challenge and a taunt in that expression. “Then make your move, Rike.”

I snatch the bourbon from Manda and take a deep breath before walking to her table.

And wait.

For a long. Fucking. Time.

It takes almost a full minute for her to look up, almost long enough for my courage to fail. I’m ready to retreat when she blinks and looks up at me, her blue eyes widening a little as they find mine. She looks startled and sleepy, and as gorgeous as she looked at a distance is nothing compared to how fucking flawless she is this close.

There are freckles sprinkled across her cheeks and dusted over her nose.

I swallow a groan as she licks her lips and gives me a tentative smile. “Hi.”

“Hi,” I say, and then go blank.

Because in none of my fantasies did I ever consider we’d actually ever get to this point. And the smirks and smooth lines won’t work—not on her. They haven’t worked for any guy that’s approached her for the past three months.

“What do you call a group of unorganized cats?” I ask and her eyes cloud, confused. She gives me a pretty frown and I grin. “A cat-astrophe.”

For a second, all either of us do is stare, and then she giggles. “That is literally the worst pickup line I’ve ever heard.”

I grin, “So you want me to leave?”

Laughter dances in her eyes. “Have a seat, Jokes.”

small_ebookThey say that your school years are supposed to be the best years of your life, and that you should make the most of them because you’ll miss them when you’re all grown up. Up until Maisie Preston’s senior year, she would have totally agreed with that statement. Life was great; she had everything going for her, excellent grades, great parents, an annoying yet caring twin brother, and an impossibly sweet boyfriend.

Everything was perfect — that is until the arrival of Zach Anderson. A misfit delinquent that seemed to bring with him a lot of bad karma. Is it just a coincidence that his arrival marks a significant change in Maisie’s life? Up until senior year, life was perfect, but things seem to be going downhill fast.

This is a companion novel for ‘Always You’ — though this novel stands alone so there is no need to read Always You first.

Kirsty Moseley has always been a passionate reader since she was a little girl, devouring books overnight, barely sleeping and paying for it at school the next day. Writing has come similarly to her and once she discovered Wattpad, she finally plucked up the courage to post one of her stories. Seven million reads later, she self-published her debut novel THE BOY WHO SNEAKS IN MY BEDROOM WINDOW, which later became one of 10 Finalists for the 2012 Goodreads’ Choice Awards, Best YA Fiction. Shocked and overwhelmed by the response, she published her second novel ALWAYS YOU a few months later.

If she had to sum herself up in one word, it would probably be ‘daydreamer’ – but unlike most of her school teachers, she doesn’t necessarily view that as a bad thing. After all, she read somewhere once that books are like waking dreams….

She lives in Norfolk, England with her husband and son.

Synopsis

Thorne Ryker is losing control. He has a reputation for being overbearing. His rivals hate him because he doesn’t allow anything to get in the way of success, and women hate him because he’s never taken anyone seriously until Elena comes into his life, the one woman Ryker can’t keep his hands off…
Elena Monroe has just come out of a devastating relationship and doesn’t want anything serious. She builds enough walls when she’s around men but somehow when it comes to Thorne she can sense those walls coming down…
Will this affair change their lives for the better? Or will this just be another devastating disaster like their pasts?

Review

This was a story with an awful lot of potential; in the characters, the storyline and even with the author’s writing capabilities but it was just too compact. Everything was condensed down to the bare minimum so I felt we never really got a good sense of millionaire business man Thorne and aspiring writer Elena’s personalities, it skimmed along the top and had you craving more insight into their lives that unfortunately never transpires.

It centres around Elena finally gathering up the courage and intelligence to leave an untenable situation with her sad excuse for a fiance and also around Thorne, who secretly harbours feelings towards the complicated Elena, it’s only when they find themselves working together that they begin to form a deeper attachment.

‘“But you can hope that someone or something will come,” I said. “Something that creates a place inside your heart that is much deeper and stronger than that hole. It’s the only way to get closure. Finding something else or someone else you can lose yourself in.”’

Thorne has his dirty little secrets as all millionaire business men and wont to do but nothing that was completely shocking. I did find Thorne a bit too chauvinistic at times, ‘“You’re like one of those mind-numbingly boring housewives who refuse to give their husbands a blow job and then complain when they go to prostitutes.”’ It seemed sometimes that the words Thorne said never matched up to his true personality and his feelings for Elena; they were often harsh and uncalled for, in particular in relation to comments he made about Elena’s cheating ex. I do understand the hurt emotions behind the words but it felt a little too callous for the hero to be saying such things.

Elena was a little too back and forth and emotional at the beginning but as the story progressed so too did her personality, she evolved and gained more independence and strength and became more likable as a heroine.

It was a reasonably good read but if it had been lengthened with more much needed details and background knowledge and a little more development with the dialogue it could have been a great read.

“We’re both fools, Noelle.”

I take a deep breath and look down at my hands clasped around the mug. “I’m sorry,” I say softly. “I just…”

“You’re not used to anyone other than your brothers stepping up and protecting you.”

I hate it when he’s right. Really, really hate it.

He closes the slight distance between us and gently takes my hands from the mug. “Hey.” He touches his fingers to my chin and lifts it, making me look at him. “I get it. I already told you I don’t want someone who needs saving. But saving and protecting are two vastly different things, cupcake. I don’t care if you need protecting from a killer or some sleazeball hitting on you because he’s loaded and wears fancy suits. I’m gonna protect you, whether you like it or not. I’m not afraid to stake my claim where dicks like him are concerned. One-up me on solving murders every day of the week, but don’t be mad at me for doing what feels right. Nothing matters more to me than protecting you, bella.”

Of all the things he calls me, I’ll never let him know how much bella affects me. Because just about every time he says it, I stop breathing. It’s always at that moment when my heart is already pounding.

“I know.” I raise an eyebrow. “I’m not apologizing again though.”

“I’m surprised you said sorry once.”

I purse my lips at his wide grin. “It won’t happen again.”

“I didn’t think it would.” His eyes spark in amusement. “I’m sorry too, but I can’t help it if your badass gene pisses off my alpha complex.”

“My badass gene is laughing at you.”

“My alpha complex wants to smack your ass.”

I grab my purse, put it over my butt, and walk backward. “Nope. That’s not how we’re starting today.”

“You’re right.” He stalks toward me with a lusty glint in his eye. “We’re gonna start it like this instead.”

He slams me back against my front door and I drop my purse. He dives his hands into my hair and seals his lips over mine. Fireworks erupt across my skin as I curl my fingers around his neck.

He devours me, plain and simple.

“Now,” he breathes, smiling. “Now, we’re gonna go and get some work done.”

I flick my thumb across his bottom lip, wiping away the smudge of my lipstick. “Now, we are.”

Photograph cheating spouses. Hand over the evidence. Cash my check.
That was my plan when I returned home to Holly Woods, Texas, and became a private investigator.
Finding the dead body in my dumpster? Yeah… Given the choice, I think I would have opted out of that little discovery, especially since all three of my brothers are cops. And my Italian grandmother is sure the reason I’m single is because of my job.
Of course, my connection to the victim is entirely coincidental. Until I’m hired by her husband to investigate her murder and shoved bang-smack into the path of Detective Drake Nash.
My nemesis, a persistent pain in my ass, and one hell of a sexy son of a bitch.
Shame he still holds a grudge from that time I shot him in the foot twelve years ago, or we could have something. In another life.
So now all I have to do is avoid my nonna’s blind dates, try not to blackmail my brothers into giving me confidential police files, and absolutely do not point my gun at Drake Nash. Or kiss him. Or jump his bones.
All while I hunt down the killer.
Sounds totally simple—until a second body proves that sometimes things that start as coincidences don’t always end up that way…

(Twisted Bond is book one of the Holly Woods Files series and while it does not end in a cliffhanger, it is not a standalone.)

Forgiveness.

From the time we’re old enough to understand the word, we’re taught to forgive those who wrong us, so what do you do when the one person you can’t forgive is yourself?

For Cassidy Ashworth, it’s a question that haunts her. Forgiveness has become a foreign concept. Self-loathing is something she’s much more familiar with. Convinced that she doesn’t deserve happiness, Cassidy is determined to spend every day trying to make up for the wrong she’s done. But no amount of repenting for the past will ever convince her that she’s worthy of a future with Carson Langford.

Raised in the foster system, Carson has always been a throwaway kid. He knows firsthand just how cruel life can be, how easy it is for people to prey on the weak, and there’s nothing Carson detests more than a bully. So focused on his self-imposed role of protector, he never counted on the beautiful blonde with the haunted eyes to stumble into his life and shake up his world.

Despite her reluctance, Carson is determined to have Cassidy in his life, but once the truth of her past comes to light, the question is…will he still want to keep her?

It’s time for twenty-four-year-old Amber MacLean to face the music. But when her position as teacher turns into one as full-time nanny at the crumbling old villa, Amber finds herself growing closer to the enigmatic recluse and soon has to choose between the safety of her life back in the States and the uncertainty of Derio’s closely guarded heart.

Gosh, I love all of these little travel romances by Karina Halle.  I love the covers.  They are always so gorgeous and unique.  I especially love the travel.  Karina has a brilliant way of totally immersing you into a place that you have never even imagined before.  She makes you want pack your bags, hop on a plane and take a chance on a new place or a new someone.  Racing the Sun was no different and Derio just may be my new favorite of Karina’s.

Signor Desiderio Larosa looks like he just rolled off the model runway in Milan and then hitchhiked his way here.

Oh Derio!  You hot Italian, troubled, possibly alcoholic stud!  I fell for you so hard.  There were a lot of reasons.  We all love a troubled bad boy and Derio was just aloof and uninterested enough in seemingly everything to have me nearly salivating.  So, aloof and mean Derio needs an English teacher for his seven year old twin siblings who is raising.  Amber needs a job.  She has been traveling the world and has finally ran out of money in glorious Italy.  She has an English degree but no experience with children but lands the job anyways.  (we meet Amber in Where Sea Meets Sky but all of these books are standalones and you totally do not need to read Where Sea Meets Sky to enjoy Racing the Sun)  Amber and Derio have an instant attraction and the sexual tension is smoking hot and so is the angst!

“I need you, deeply.  Madly, even.”

OH, this one just has so much drama.  Derio was just so messed up and Amber falls for him so hard and I cannot blame her.  We all fantasize about the troubled bad boy falling for us and us making him all better.

“I need to know if I can feel anything.  I want to feel something.”

Ahhh, the feels.  So many.  I don’t know if it was all the tragedy or the children, or the magical island, or The House of Sad Lemons but this book just felt so emotional and I was there.  I was in it and living it so completely.  God, I just loved it.  And it was sexy.  Just so damn sensual!  This book was everything.

You are like the sunrise when you come.”

“All this light, chasing away the dark.”

So basically what I am saying, is that this book rocked my socks, A LOT!  There is a quote in this book that pretty much stuck with me in a big way because I felt really it described all of these travel romances that Karina writes.  I think this is why I Iove them so.  This one line pretty much sums them up!

Some feelings transcend any language.

Another amazing book from Karina Halle.  All I can hope from what I gathered from this book is that the next one will take place in Norway and I can honestly say that I cannot wait for next adventure.
