Blurb

Lea Lamb and Austin Wolf were young when they fell in love. They never imagined the future could hold anything other than together-forever.

When Lea’s father dies in a tragic fishing accident, she’s crushed under the weight of her grief and catches a glimpse of another type of future, one she knows she’s not strong enough to face.

Austin is angry. For the past fifteen years, he’s believed the woman he loved with every ounce of his soul left him without so much as a backwards glance.

When Lea unexpectedly returns to their hometown, all the years of heartache inside Austin bubbles to the surface and presents itself as blinding rage.

Faced with the truth about the past, a newly discovered secret, these former lovers will learn that if they want to have any chance at the future they’d given up on all those years ago, they will have to rescue one another from drowning in pain so debilitating it will leave them both fighting to breathe.

“CAN WE STOP by the liquor store on the way to dinner?” Mom asks from the passenger seat of my car.

“Should you be drinking?” I frown then turn onto the main road—well, really the only road in town.

“What’s it going to do, kill me?” she jokes, making me inhale a sharp breath. “Honey,” she says quietly, and I look at her briefly, wondering how the hell she can be so casual about this. “I’m dying. When it will happen, only the good Lord knows, but it is happening, and there is nothing you or I can do about it. I have made my peace with it, and I want you to do the same.” She reaches over to pat my thigh.

“Make peace with it?” I repeat, shaking my head in disbelief.

“Yes, make peace with it. If you think about it, I’m lucky. I know I’m going to die. I know that sooner rather than later God is going to come take me home, and when he does, I will be ready. I will have had a chance to say goodbye to the people I care about and right any wrongs I’ve caused. I’m lucky, honey.”

“What about me?” I wring my hands on the steering wheel, feeling my chest get tight as I fight back tears.

“I love you, honey. I loved you before you were even a sparkle in my eye, and I will always be with you. I know this isn’t easy for you. I know there are going to be a lot of tears shed, but we’re lucky, honey.”

I press my lips together to keep from saying something I might regret. I’m not lucky; in fact, I’m unlucky to the tenth power. How many people have I lost, how many people do I have to loose before it’s enough.

“Oh look! Sheryl!” She yells, pulling me from my thoughts as she reaches over, pressing the horn on my steering wheel while her other hand shoots across me so she can wave out my window. Looking to where she’s waving my heart begins to beat wildly

against my ribcage when I see not Sheryl, but Austin walking into one of the many bars that litter Main Street, only it’s not just Austin—it’s him and a woman with her arm wrapped around the back of his waist as he holds the door open for her.

Even from the distance separating us, my lungs compress at the beauty that is him. The years have been good to him. His hair is still shaggy, only now a little lighter; his face is tan and covered in a beard that makes his crystal blue eyes stand out even more. My eyes travel from his face to his torso, which is covered in a dark green thermal that shows off the muscles of his arms, chest, and tapered waist, then down to his denim-covered thighs. When my gaze sweeps back up, his eyes are on me, and I see them crinkle in confusion then realization that soon turns into anger.

“You missed the liquor store,” my mom complains as I speed up.

Review

“I feel stuck. There is no moving on, because I’m waiting for the inevitable to happen.”

Aurora Rose Reynolds is quickly becoming an author who I would automatically one click even without checking ratings or blurbs. Fighting to Breathe has solidified her into that role for me. Both emotional and sexy, Fighting To Breathe was impossible to put down and I was able to read the entire story in one sitting.

“When I get my hands on you, I’m spanking you for this,” “You’re not.” “Don’t worry babe. I’ll make you come after,”

Returning home to care for her dying mother, Lea Lamb, must finally face the man she left 15 years ago, Wes Wolf. Having broke both his heart and hers she is not welcome home by Wes and others in the town. But even after 15 years apart the feelings Wes and Lea share for one another cannot be denied and soon after spending time together they find themselves wondering if time changes nothing. But deceit and lies lay dormant at the base of all their issues and when things come to life everything they are gets tested.

“I hate that we had fifteen years stolen for us, but know that if things go my way, we’ll have sixty to make up for it.”

Fighting To Breathe was a fast read and a sweet romance with an alpha hero and some very hot sex. Possessive men and timeless romances are a formula that Aurora can’t go wrong with. I can’t wait for more from the people of this small Alaskan town and the people who live there. I will say I did find several mistakes but not so many that it was distracting and since this was an early copy it is possible that they were fixed before release.

Excerpt

“Are you just stupid?” I probably would have gone on, but she wrapped her arms around herself and glared up at me.

“Stop yelling at me!” she screamed.  She turned away, but I saw her reach up with the back of her hand to swoop underneath her eyes.

Shit.

I turned slightly away from her and practically bit down on my tongue to keep myself from saying anything else.  I brought my fisted hands up against my stomach and tried to pull the tension inside of myself, work through it, and calm down.  I could hear her crying combined with choked breaths and sniffles.

“Fuck,” I mumbled under my breath.  I was starting to come off the fighting high I had been on—the tears might have helped with that—and my stomach felt tight.

After three long, deep breaths, I looked back to the girl on the ground and saw her frantically rubbing at her eyes and cheeks.  She didn’t look at me as she reached out and pulled her mostly empty bag close to her.  She looked inside and then looked around her at all her things on the ground.

“Sorry,” I mumbled.  I wasn’t all that great at apologies, and I figured now wasn’t going to be much different.  I’d obviously upset her with all my shitty comments, though.  “I didn’t mean to…I just…”

I stopped talking.  I didn’t know what to say, and I felt bad about yelling at her.  She looked at me all red-eyed with tears staining her cheeks.

“Just don’t do that shit anymore.”  I let out a big sigh.

She nodded once and then reached out to grab something off the ground near her and shoved it back into the bag.  From the amount of stuff scattered all over the street, my estimate on the size of the so-called purse wasn’t too far off.  There was an umbrella, a little flashlight, a bunch of tubes and bottles, and at least a half dozen pens.  As I looked around some more, I saw a small notebook, a paperback book, keys, a bottle of hand lotion that was nowhere near travel sized, a stack of tissues wrapped up in a Ziploc bag, two sets of earbuds, and a checkbook.  There was also a whole pile of ponytail holders, bobby pins, and those little hair-holder-things that looked like teeth.

There was shit from her bag from one side of the fucking street to the other.

She started crawling around, gathering it all up, and cramming it back inside, which gave me a fabulous view of her ass in the short-shorts style waitress uniform the place up the street usually demanded.  I could kind of see how she might have thought she could use the bag as a weapon—there had been more stuff in there than really should have been able to fit.  I looked around on the ground to see if there was an actual kitchen sink, or at least part of one, but I didn’t see anything metal.  There was something that looked like a small rock, though.

“How do you even carry that thing around?” I asked.

“What?”

“That…that purse-bag-thingy there,” I said, pointing and shaking my finger at it.  I wouldn’t have admitted it, but the whole idea of the thing scared me, and I wasn’t sure why.  I felt like if I got too close to it I might get sucked in, never to be seen again.  “It’s insane.”

Her eyes became little slits as she looked up to me.

“There is nothing wrong with my purse!” she growled.

“It’s huge,” I said.

“It has everything I need in it.”

“It has everything you and ten of your friends could need for a week,” I replied with a laugh.  “I know there are people who carry Chihuahuas in their purse, but you could fit a Dane in there.”

Review

So Takedown Teague is the very first Shay Savage book I have ever read.  I have been wanting to read her caveman books but I am always so swamped with arcs, so I was glad this came in as a request to review.  And I really am glad I took a chance on it, because I really loved this book.

Cage fighter Liam spends his nights fighting in a dive bar on a terrible side of town for just $100 a fight most nights struggling to make ends meet and he seems to like it that way.  Tria also happens to live and work on this side of town and is new to the area, oblivious to her dangerous surroundings.  Guy saves girl and they seem pretty darn inseparable from that point on.  Only Liam has big secrets.

“As long as I kept moving, I wouldn’t go searching.”

Well, so does Tria and I was literally left with as many questions as Tria when this book ended.

“Give me your past,” “Tell me why.”

Things just went kind of crazy and I literally could not stop reading.  The first 20% of this book moved kind of slow for me, but after that I was enthralled and literally could not put it down; staying up most of the night to finish.  So many unexpected things kept happening, so many happenings that were just odd.  And I loved it for it.  This series is just so unique.

I went into this thinking it was a serial, but it is not.  It is a series, each book ending in cliffhanger, all about the same couple; Liam and Tria.  So many things happened in this book and I still do not know what the heck is going on.  I am dying for answers.  Oh, the questions are endless, and I cannot wait to dive into the next one.  The writing is fabulous and the story was at times funny, but still managed to be really dark and raw.  It was also very sexy, even though no actual sex happened.  I do love sexual tension and this book had it in spades.  I also really enjoyed the fighting aspect.  So many fighting books in the romance genre never include the fighter actually fighting.  But this one does and it seems like Liam is forever fighting with someone or something.  I wish I could tell you more about the plot but I honestly do not want to ruin anything and furthermore I am still pretty confused about the plot myself.  I can tell you one thing though.  It was awesome! 😉

“There was me, and there was her, and there was us.”

Rage boils in his gut when he witnesses what happens to the beautiful Mercy Shepherd during a SWAT op from hell that even his worst nightmare couldn’t conjure up. And it surprises the hell out of him when she wants him, and him only, to comfort her in the aftermath.

Miller becomes the one shining beacon of light at the bottom of Mercy’s pit of despair.

Foster made a promise in his hospital bed when his leg was taken from him that he’d get back to one hundred percent. Leg or no leg, he’d get back on the SWAT team if it killed him.

And he does get back. But he has a problem.

He can’t let go of the past.

The anger burns deep, making his emotions volatile at the best of times.

Then he meets Blake with her haughty attitude and inability to distinguish the difference between a pocket knife and a sword.

Little by little, she makes him whole again, one bad joke at a time.

She doesn’t see the revenge in his eyes, though. Doesn’t see the rage burning deep.

Rage so pure and all encompassing, that he knows it’ll explode.

It’s just a matter of time.

What Foster doesn’t realize, though, is that the love that Blake has for him is enough to fight his demons, one kiss at a time.

Foster never stood a chance.

Title: Charlie Foxtrot (Code-11 KPD SWAT #5)

With the help of his parents, he went into the Navy, becoming the SEAL that he always wanted to be. However, with that came a price.

A price he wasn’t willing to pay anymore once his little girl started to realize why he wasn’t there. So he came home and joined the local SWAT team, starting his life anew, just his daughter and him.

Then he meets the cute little physician’s assistant that looks down upon him like one would an annoying fly, and he finally realizes just what he’s been missing.

Something that takes his mind off of the challenge of everyday life. Someone that dares him to be a better father and cop.

And Lennox is one hell of a motivator.

Their relationship starts off rocky as the two of them circle each other like opponents ready to do combat rather than two civil adults. Every day brings a new battle for the two of them to overcome, and before they realize it, they’ll be fighting for each other instead of against each other.

Michael was that guy.

The one that everyone was cautious of. Maybe it was the tattoos. Maybe it was the way he gave off a ‘don’t screw with me’ vibe. Maybe it was because he just told them to leave him the hell alone.

Regardless, people gave him his space.

He was screwed up, and everyone knew it.

He got tattoos because he liked the pain. He was standoffish. He didn’t have many friends outside of work. And the only thing he had going for him was that he was a good cop.

Everyone wondered about him, but no one asked.

The only one that didn’t treat him as if he was screwed up was Nikki Pena, a woman that he couldn’t have.

Nikki was that girl.

The one that everyone loved.

The one girl that he’d destroy if he let her have her way. What did she want?

Him.

But, he couldn’t give her him. She didn’t deserve what it would take to be with him.

So Michael would suffer in silence…or so he thought.
The woman who loved him had different ideas.

Twenty-Four hours before we were to be married–I offered to shoot her.

Ten hours before our wedding–I made a mockery of her dying wish.

Five hours before we were going to say our vows–I promised I’d never love her.

One hour before I said I do–I vowed I’d never shed a tear over her death.

But the minute we were pronounced man and wife–I knew.

I’d only use my gun to protect her.

I’d give my life for hers.

I’d cry.

And I would, most definitely, lose my heart, to a dying girl—a girl who by all accounts should have never been mine in the first place.

I always believed the mafia would be my end game–where I’d lose my heart, while it claimed my soul. I could have never imagined. It would be my redemption.

Or the beginning of something beautiful.

The beginning of her.

The end of us.

EXCERPT

Loneliness tasted like hell. It also, lucky for me, tasted like a fifth of whiskey and what would most likely be a throbbing headache come tomorrow morning.

I brought the bottle to my lips and tilted it back, my eyes trained on the fire in front of me, the flames licking higher and higher, reminding me that I wasn’t exactly in any position to ask God for any favors…it may as well have been hell waving back at me and confirming my suspicions.

I’d killed too much.

I’d lied even more.

And I was officially out of favor within my family — within my world.

I hissed as a drip of whiskey landed on my blood-caked knuckles. Beating the shit out of the wall hadn’t even stopped the anger.

Ah anger, that was something I could talk about, something I could tangibly feel as it pulsed through my body. It had been my mistress for so long that I knew if I actually let it go — I’d be even more lonely than I already was.

I tried to take a deep breath, to calm myself down, but air wouldn’t go into my lungs, I felt paralyzed and on an adrenaline high all at once.

Maybe that was another part of my punishment. I had exactly twenty-four hours before I had to marry a Russian.

And not just any Russian.

An enemy, a double agent who had worked for both the FBI and, apparently, the Nicolasi family. She had sold out her own crime family, the Petrovs, and now… she was under the protection of the Italians.

How messed up was that?

I took another swig of whiskey and eyed the clock. Make that twenty-three hours and fifty-eight minutes.

I wasn’t drunk enough.

I wasn’t even close.

Marrying someone for protection I could do. Marrying someone and even killing them afterwards? Piece of cake. After all, that was my MO. I was a killer, a ghost, whatever the family wanted me to be.

But marrying someone, keeping them safe, only to watch them die within six months?

No. Hell no.

She had leukemia.

So why keep her alive this long?

I snorted and took another sip of whiskey. “I’d be doing her a favor by killing her.”

“Ouch,” a light airy voice said from somewhere in the room, causing all my hair to stand on end. “So as far as pep talks go, yours officially needs work.”

I carefully set down the whiskey, not trusting myself not to throw it in her direction in an anger-filled rage. “I was talking to myself.”

“Another sign you need to get laid.” She laughed.

I didn’t.

“Go away, Arabella.”

“My name’s Andi.”

“Your legal name is Arabella Anderson Petrov. Care to know your social security number and credit score as well?”

“Romance is lost on you.” I felt her move around the room. The air seized with electricity; she’d always had a presence about her, and right now I was five seconds away from losing my shit and ramming my head into the fireplace just so I could escape it all.

“Don’t I know it,” I huffed and reached for the bottle again.

Small warm hands clasped around mine before I could get there. I jerked away, causing her to stumble in front of me.

White-blond hair covered her soft features. Big brown eyes blinked back at me. I hissed in a breath and cursed. “You should go.”

“We need to talk.”

“Oh goody. Is this the part where you tell me I have to give up my virginity on my wedding night?”

“What?” She blinked like a startled deer, then a weak smile pulled her lips upward.

I ignored the way my body reacted and rolled my eyes in irritation.

“Aw, he has jokes now. At least, I hope it’s a joke. You’re not, are you? A virgin, I mean.”

I snorted and eyed the bottle, calculating my odds on reaching it before she stopped me, then gave up. “Fine.” I huffed. “Hurry up and get to talking so I can get drunk.”

Andi sat opposite me in the leather chair and tucked her feet under her body. She was small, around five-one, but she packed a punch, knew how to use every automatic weapon on the market, and I was pretty sure I had once overheard that she was well-versed in torture. Looking at her, you’d think she was just graduating high school and getting ready to go shopping for her favorite pair of shoes with Daddy’s credit card.

“You’re upset,” she finally said.

“No.” I licked my lips and leaned forward. “I’m enraged. There’s a difference.”

Her eyes narrowed. “You know you can talk to me — since you’re stuck with me for the next… while. That is, unless you kill me first… like you did that FBI agent.”

My blood ran cold. No one knew about what I’d done last week. When I’d gained intel from another agent. “Her cover was blown. I did her a favor.”

“Did you?” Her eyebrows arched.

“Have you ever been shot, Andi?”

She sighed and leaned her head back against the lush cushion. “No, why? Are you going to educate me on what it feels like?”

I exhaled and popped my knuckles; the sound reverberated through the empty room. “It happens in three stages.”

“What does?”

“Getting shot.”

“You mean you don’t just pull the trigger?” she joked.

Ignoring her, I continued. “Shock. It’s always the first emotion because the human brain hasn’t yet caught up with the fact that you’ve been wounded. So your body starts going into shock, and then the pain happens, but it’s not the type of pain you’d think. It burns, but it’s more of an empty, hollow pain, that starts to spread from the wound throughout the rest of your body until a slow chill starts to descend. When the chill descends, the shock wears off and confusion sets in. Why was I shot? Why me? What have I done? As humans, our brains aren’t meant to understand violence, so we have to logically explain it away. I had to have done something wrong to get shot. Or maybe I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The minute your brain finds something that makes sense you move onto the last stage.”

Andi barely moved a muscle. “Death?”

“Worse.” I reached for the bottle and took a long swig. “Denial.”

“Why is denial worse?”

“You tell me.”

Her eyes closed briefly before she offered a shrug. “Because it means you aren’t ready.”

“Look who just earned an A in class,” I mocked. “And you’re right. Denial happens when you realize it shouldn’t be you, that even if your brain connected the dots, it isn’t yet your time. The lovely little memories of your life start to play on repeat in your head — the moments you should have done something but didn’t, the things you’ll never say, the things you’ll never do. And then… you either get lucky or, if I’m the one who pulled the trigger, your memories will click off after about one minute, and you’ll be no more.”

The fire crackled.

Andi refused to look at me.

“I’d make it fast, Andi.”

“Are we seriously doing this?”

“What?” I shrugged.

“Having a conversation in what should be a nice cozy room, about you killing me?”

“It would be a kindness.”

“Go to hell!”

“Already there, Andi. Already there. Don’t you know? I belong nowhere. My family’s punishing me, the FBI’s investigating me for the murder of my superior, and now I have to marry a Russian whore.”

“So…” She stood. “…you’d rather kill me than marry me?”

“Was I not clear? I thought I was… Allow me to say it slower, perhaps in Russian? If that’s all you people understand.” I stood, meeting her chest to chest. “I’d rather kill you than see you suffer… I’d offer a dog the same kindness.”

“I’m not a dog.”

“You’re Russian.”

“Stop saying that.”

“What?” I sneered. “The truth? Well, sweetheart, it doesn’t get any truer than your reality. Allow me to kill you before your family or cancer does, and at least you can own your own death rather than fearing it.”

She reached for me, touched my shoulders, and then cupped my face. I hated it because I liked it; my body leaned without me telling it to. She was so warm. “And what makes you think I fear my own death?”

“Everyone is afraid of dying. The hardest part is never admitting we’re mortal, but coming to terms with the fact that we have no control over how long we’re given. You do.”

“No… I don’t… You’re trying to take that control.”

“Say the word.” My hand moved to the Glock strapped to my thigh.

“I’m not afraid.” Her lips trembled. “At least not of death… but I am afraid of something.”

“Oh yeah?” I hissed. “What’s that?”

“Yours.”

Confused, I stepped back, immediately looking for a weapon. “I don’t understand.”

“You wouldn’t.” She shrugged. “Because you, Sergio Abandonato, are already dead.” She moved gracefully across the room. “You’re dead inside… and you don’t even know it. Forget cancer — and take a long hard look in the mirror — that’s what death looks like.”
