He caught his date smiling at him over her coffee cup. Her teeth were so perfectly straight and white, it almost seemed unnatural. He wondered if he should attempt conversation again. Drea had suggested, though, that talking about himself was not the best way to attract a woman. Listen to them instead, she’d said, or ordered, rather.

The problem with that advice was that this woman didn’t speak. At all. She hmm’d and ah ha’d, but that was the extent of her conversation. Even when he asked a question, he’d receive only a giggle in response.

She should be the perfect woman—attractive and quiet. And bland.

Maybe he didn’t want a quiet woman after all. Though Andrea argued with him at any chance she got, at least she was entertaining. Often over the last weeks, he’d actually

looked forward to seeing her in his office. Her opinions might be overbearing, but her insight was also usually spot-on.

Andrea also wouldn’t expect him to order for her, as all the other ones did. What was that anyway? A test of some sort? How was he possibly supposed to know what she’d want when he’d never met her before that very evening?

He’d tell Andy about that the next day. She’d get a kick out of it.

Now why did he just refer to her as Andy? Andrea was more suited to her looks. Admittedly, the more he’d gotten to know her, the more Andy seemed to fit her personality. But it was a hell of a lot of fun to see her feathers ruffle when he called her Drea.

The waiter came then to ask if there’d be anything else. “No, just the bill.” Blake said that a little quicker than

he should have. Andrea would have disapproved. “If you would, please,” he added, hoping to soften his obvious anxiousness. Actually, being in charge of the meal meant he could just demand the check like that. This was exactly why he continued to do the ordering for dates.

There. That was better. Andrea would be proud. He was nice-ish, and making sound business decisions.

Blake paid the bill and looked to his date—what was her name again? Sally? Cindy? Cinnamon? No matter, he’d simply leave it out when addressing her. “Are you ready then?”

“Hmm,” she replied.

It had to mean yes since she put her napkin on the table and rose from her seat.

Blake followed, a small smile gracing his lips at finally ending the miserable charade of a meal.

It wasn’t until later—much later—when he was tucked into his bed and he’d completed a chapter in his latest noir detective novel that he realized he’d spent the night

thinking more about his matchmaker than his proposed match.

He needed to get it together.

The sound of the garage door going up startled me, setting me into motion. It was a good thing I had been trained to make split second decisions with
limited information because that skill set was being put to the test right now. I moved toward the kitchen as I ran the possible scenarios through my head.
If it was Serena using a friend’s place to lay low, then I was in the clear. If it was a boyfriend or family member of the dead author, I was probably
screwed. A cleaning person or friend, I might be okay. The bottom line was, I had no way of knowing which scenario I was about to face, but it didn’t
matter. There wasn’t a chance in hell I was going out the back without knowing if the person walking through that door was Serena.

Right as my decision was made, I heard the sound of the garage door lowering, quickly followed by the door connecting the garage to the house opening and
closing. A deep feminine sigh resonated, but I stayed in position, on the other side of the refrigerator and out of sight. The sound of footsteps got

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Home.”

“I know. Where in your apartment are you?”

“On my bed.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Give me a minute.”

I heard stomping up some stairs and then a door closed.

“On my bed,” he said in that same husky tone.

I nearly stopped breathing.

“Are you still there?” he asked again.

“Yes,” my voice was raspy.

In a deep husky voice he said, “Tell me what you’re wearing under your clothes.”

Arousal overtook my mind and I answered quickly. “A bra and panties.”

“Take off your clothes and tell me what they look like.”

Flushing from head to toe I managed to say, “Jeremy!”

“Phoebe?”

The bell on the door to Couture Corsets tinkled, announcing that a customer had just walked into Paige Moore’s small boutique in Old Town San Diego, where she designed and sold custom-made corsets.

“It’s just me,” she heard her good friend Raina Beck call out.

Knowing Raina would just head to the back area of the shop where Paige did all her designing and creations, she continued hand sewing small seed pearls to an exquisite white satin corset she was making for a client’s wedding night.

A moment later, Raina walked past the curtain of glittering crystals hanging in the doorway that separated the retail floor from the workroom. “Wow, that looks stunning,” she said of the one-of-a-kind bridal corset, her voice laced with awe.

Paige glanced over her shoulder and grinned. “Thanks. Once I add the crystal and lace embellishments along the bodice, this bride is going to knock her groom’s pants off when he sees her in this corset.”

Raina laughed. “Not a bad way to start off a marriage.”

“What? By getting lucky?” Paige asked humorously as she set her needle and thread down on the nearby worktable that dominated the area.

“And being totally turned on by your new wife.”

“Speaking of getting turned on,” Paige said with a smirk as she eyed her cheerful friend. “You’re glowing and smiling all the time, so things with Logan must be good, yes?”

Paige’s eyes widened as she looked at the envelope. “Oh my God, is this an invitation to your wedding? Oh, yes, Paige was definitely intrigued. It had been a year and a half since she’d been with a man. A year and a half since the morning Sawyer Burrows had shattered her heart with his betrayal. And the thought of indulging in a night of hot sex with an anonymous guy was incredibly appealing. She needed to do something to finally shake Sawyer from her mind and thoughts and let the painful past go so she could move on with her life.

Easier said than done, but an evening at The Players Club was a good start to putting an end to her dry spell.

Paige frowned, not sure how she felt about running into a man she swore she hated yet who still had the ability to affect her on a physical level. Yeah, that part drove her absolutely crazy, but she was curious what Raina meant. “How so?”

The corner of Paige’s mouth curled into a smile as she thought about her friend’s suggestion. It had been too long since she’d felt desired and sexy.
