“We’re not that close.”
“Close enough,” I say, almost surprised that I’m pushing this. But I can’t help it—I’m curious. What could his resolutions possibly be that he wouldn’t talk about them? Compared to the things this man has said to me, resolutions feel like a walk in the park.
“Nice try,” he says and then removes my beer from my hand and takes a sip. Instead of giving it back to me, he sets it on the table, just as the countdown from ten starts on the TV.
He glances at the screen and counts down from five. “Five, four, three, two, one.” He gazes into my eyes. “Happy New Year, Taran.”
“Happy New Year,” I reply, unsure why he’s looking at me like that.
And then before I know what’s happening, his hand slides across my cheek, his body leans in, and his lips are on mine before I can take my next breath. I freeze, my mind nearly exploding at the unexpected move, and yet, when his mouth slightly opens and he continues the kiss, I don’t move.
I don’t push away.
But I also don’t kiss him back.
I just…let it happen. I let him feel his lips on mine.
I let him hold me close.
