Synopsis

“Sugar, Jules and I had run for our lives. Only our shadows had followed us. And no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t outpace them.”

All-around bad boy, and twenty-five-year-old heir to the Jameson fortune, Tommy Jameson, knows three things:
– His family is disappointed in him.
– Overcoming his addictions won’t necessarily crush his vices.
– He is wildly in love with Sugar Scarborough, a girl who is dealing with her own addictions and an insatiable need to please.

Danger sends Tommy, Sugar and their friend, Julian Fitzpatrick, a heavily medicated, socially dysfunctional genius, fleeing from Green Willow Recovery Center. Now, together, they will face the outside world and uncover a horrifying mystery while being forced to confront their inner demons.

Review

Tommy knows he is a disappointment to his family; ordered to stay at a facility for young adults with “difficulties” and there meets the young, troubled and vicarious Sugar who he’s madly in love with and Julian, a young man who’s brilliance is overshadowed by his troubled personality. But all is not as it seems at this facility and eventually finds these 3 on the run trying to figure out what happened and escape their pasts.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this story!! One word to sum up how I felt reading this is just “wow.” It was a fast-paced, smart and exciting read with plenty of twists which meant I never saw the ending coming at all. We know from the very start of the book that Tommy is in prison and I love the way it started like this because right away you are desperate to know what happened.

“Only our shadows had followed us. And no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t outpace them.”

The three main characters were just brilliant, each in their own way. Tommy was funny, sarcastic, strong and troubled but he knew he was and he knew why and I liked that he was brave enough to admit this. He didn’t let anything hold him back and you could see that nearly from the start of the story that he wanted to prove people wrong. Sugar was so strong considering her past! So amazingly strong and although she definitely had her problems you felt for her so much and I loved the bright, funny side of her personality that you knew was who she really was. And finally Julian; oh Julian, so smart but so broken. You couldn’t help but love Julian, right from the start and as the story developed you started to understand the depth of his troubles and there are definitely times when I wasn’t sure if we would or even could pull himself out.

“You don’t do it consciously, and this sounds weird, but it’s like when you’re there, you absorb all the coldness, the sadness, like you were put here just for that, to take away some of the ugliness. Like I ended up here at Green Willow just to be near you.”

The plot was brilliant. So smart, so exciting; just kept me reading page after page after page. It was such a clever thought out plot, and the writing just flowed. I don’t want to give anything away but wow were those some twists, I didn’t see it coming and I don’t imagine many will. The way it all came together in the end was hugely satisfying after such a ‘on the edge of your seat, nail biting’ read.

“We were mismatched in so many ways, but there was something, a sort of kinship, between us all. Something we desperately needed. Something that made sense to us, and while we didn’t know it then, something that would change each of us forever.”

I have no complaints for this story and I can’t wait to read more from this author who just knows exactly what she is doing and how to create a story that will hold you throughout the read and for a long time after…I miss Tommy, Sugar and Julian already!

“You wait for me, baby. Do you hear me? You fucking wait for me, because I’ve never loved anyone until you. You stay safe, and you wait for me.”
