Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis Review

4.5 SMOOCHES!

SYNOPSIS:

Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that — but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once…

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

REVIEW:

A Jill Shalvis novel is a surefire, no fail, smile-the-whole-way-through, joy for me read to read. When I think of classic contemporary romance, she inevitably is one of the first authors who comes to mind. She pens the kinds of stories that are full of heart and soul, rich with humor, vividly detailed, romantic love stories that I can’t help but be swept up in. They’re sweet and sexy with terrific banter and full of as many laugh-out-loud moments as they are passionate, sizzling hot ones. The sixth book in her Heartbreaker Bay series, Hot Winter Nights was a great example of her style of warm and cozy contemporary romance, and it was a cover-to-cover pleasure to read.

A truly engaging story with a dual-pronged arc, Hot Winter Nights was the perfect story to usher in fall. Not exactly a Christmas story, there were, however, holiday-themed elements that contributed to the suspense arc of the plot. Shalvis is known for her swoon-worthy, sexy alpha males, and she gave her readers a strong and seriously hot one in Lucas. He’s suffered through losing people close to him, and as a result, he’s a bit closed off emotionally. Molly is kind of the same, having grown up without her mother but with a military veteran father dealing with severe PTSD who needed substantial care, requiring a young Molly to grow up quickly. An accident in her teen years left her with physical scars and a limp, which, unfortunately for the strong-willed and proud Molly, just makes the (many) men in her life a bit overprotective, something she abhors. What I liked most about Lucas was how he immediately understood that about her, and he looked past all of that to see the capable, clever, resourceful woman that she was, and instead of holding her back under the guise of protecting her, he was the only one who encouraged her to fly.

I really liked Molly and Lucas as a couple, they were very well paired, and I think part of that was because they were so in sync with each other that they actually seemed like a couple before they officially became one. I loved their internal dialogue, and how those private revelations gave the reader insight into the thoughts and feelings of these two characters who weren’t very emotionally demonstrative. Since neither Molly nor Lucas shared their emotions readily, these glimpses into what was going on in their heads played a significant role in building the depth of the relationship. They also had incredible chemistry, something they both fought at first. Where they may not have eagerly or easily communicated what they were feeling outside of the bedroom, they definitely had no problems doing so inside of it.

I can always count on Jill Shalvis to deliver an entertaining and charming story with endearing characters, and she certainly did that here. Hot Winter Nights was a captivating blend of heart-string pulling moments and a steamy love story with lots of wit and humor and a truly interesting suspense plot that kept me just as invested in the story as the romance did. Always well written and developed, Ms. Shalvis’ writing, for me, epitomizes everything I love about classic contemporary romance. Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis gets 4.5 smooches from me!

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kylie Scott comes a new story in her Stage Dive series…

When the girl of your dreams is kind of a nightmare.

As head of security to Stage Dive, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Sam Knowles has plenty of experience dealing with trouble. But spoilt brat Martha Nicholson just might be the worst thing he’s ever encountered. The beautiful troublemaker claims to have reformed, but Sam knows better than to think with what’s in his pants. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to make his heart fall into line.

Martha’s had her sights on the seriously built bodyguard for years. Quiet and conservative, he’s not even remotely her type. So why the hell can’t she get him out of her mind? There’s more to her than the Louboutin wearing party-girl of previous years, however. Maybe it’s time to let him in on that fact and deal with this thing between them.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

EXCERPT:

“I don’t believe this,” I bitched. “My Valentino boots are actually sticking to the floor. That’s how gross this place is.”

Lizzy just smiled. “Told you to dress casual.”

“I am.”

The smile widened.

“Jeans and a tee is casual.”

“A tee? It’s velvet, Martha.” She held a bottle of beer up to her lips, taking a sip. “I said we were going to a dive bar. You have only yourself to blame for the fashion faux pas.”

“But velvet is in!”

“Would you two quit talking? I’m trying to listen,” said my brother, Ben. The big hairy idiot was slouched back in his chair, bopping his head in time to the music.

Lizzy shuffled closer all conspiratorial-like. “I know why you’re all dressed up.”

I said nothing. There was nothing to be said.

Next her gaze went to the man standing at the end of the bar across from us. No, no, I would not turn my head. I would not fall prey to her bullshit. After all, I’d managed to successfully avoid him for the forty-eight or so hours since my not so triumphant surprise return to the West Coast. Even with us both being in the same house. A very big sprawling house, but still.

On the other hand, it should probably be mentioned that he looked awfully good tonight in jeans and a white T-shirt with a leather jacket. Samuel Rhodes, otherwise known as Sam. Not a pretty man with his harsh features and bull-like neck, but something about him appealed to me. As always, his head was shaved and his body was built and my idiot fingers itched to explore.

Okay. So I guess at some point I must have turned my head. And shit, he caught me looking.

The corner of his lips rose just a little, just enough to mess with me, before he returned to doing his job by casually surveying the packed room. My heart did not speed up due to anything done by him. Clearly, I hadn’t totally caught my breath from when we’d walked in half an hour ago or something. That was all. Interesting to note, he did none of the checking me out typical of a heterosexual male who might have been into me. In fact, he didn’t really give me any signals at all. Ever.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The moment I see her, I feel something so profound, so completely in my heart that it just makes everything right in the world.

It’s her.

Stunning.

Breathtaking.

That’s the only way to describe the incredible woman who now stands at my side.

I grab her hand as soon as she’s within reach and bring it to my lips. There’s a slight tremble, though I’m not sure if it’s her hand or mine. Probably both. She looks up at me with so much excitement, so much happiness, that I don’t pay any attention to the man standing in front of me, speaking.

I should probably pay attention, right?

But I can’t.

I only see her.

My Meghan.

“Repeat after me.”

And I do. I say the words, feeling them with every fiber of my being, as I vow to stand by her side, to love and protect her, till death do us part. It’s an easy proclamation to make, since it’s nothing but the truth. Her eyes fill with tears as she repeats the same vows as me, but she never wavers, never falters.

REVIEW:

I have loved every single book in Lacey Black’s Summer Sisters series, and I’m a little sad to see the series ending. It’s kind of bittersweet to say goodbye to these characters, but I’m really glad Lacey gave her readers this novella to end it on a very happy note. She tied up the last loose end in My Kinda Wedding by giving her readers the much-anticipated wedding of the final Summer sister, Meghan. It was a poignant, full-circle moment in this series that brought tears to my eyes and put a lump in my throat while making my heart soar with happiness.

A perfect ending to a fantastic series, Black brings her readers up to date with a favorite family and the chance to end a beloved series on upbeat note while guiding them onwards to the next series. I loved every single thing about this novella, and I’m looking forward to whatever is coming next! Five smooches from me for My Kinda Wedding by Lacey Black!

EXCERPT

~Miller~

She sings like a sinner. She sings like an angel. She sounds like whiskey and sugar. I’ve only ever known her for her church-bell voice, but now she’s a glorious mix of dirty and sweet, and I never knew she had it in her.

But I can’t marinate in this change-up. It’s showtime for me.

Grabbing the mic, I dive into my first line as I gaze into those blue eyes of my friend. Only I have to think of her as Honey, so I sing to the new woman about how I can’t do without her, how I need her now.

Something is in the air between us when we sing, something charged. Something that hasn’t been there before. Stage chemistry.

I move closer as if I’m drawn by the pull of gravity that I have no control over. We lock eyes and everyone else fades away. I’m still in shock that I’m loving singing a song with my best friend.

That’s what terrifies me. Especially since we sound good together, and we move well together.

Maybe we even look good together, as we belt out this hot-as-fuck duet, and for the first time we’re not butchering a holiday tune or destroying “Total Eclipse of the Heart” at karaoke. As she moves closer to me, we sing the final chorus like it’s going out of style, and when the music softens, I can’t resist. I finger a strand of her blonde wig, the coconut scent from her lotion floating into my nose.

Reluctantly, I let the hair fall.

Clapping rings loud in my ears.

Jackson, Miles, and Campbell give a standing O. Jackson holds up his phone, pointing to it, letting me know he caught it on video.

“Chemistry,” the guys all shout, practically in unison.

But I’m not supposed to have chemistry with my best friend.

That’s the problem.

“What the hell just happened here?” I whisper to Ally, befuddled.

Her mouth opens, and her eyes go wide, and she blurts out, “I have an appointment. I need to go.”

She takes off, leaving in her wake a trail of chemistry and coconut and confusion.

REVIEW:

Lila Monroe is off to a great start with How to Choose A Guy in 10 Days, the first book from her new series of romantic comedies, Chick Flick Club. Three cleverly titled books follow a trio of best friends as they find love in the often disastrous, occasionally delicious San Francisco dating scene. I loved Monroe’s previous book, Man Candy, and she teased How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days at the end of it. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it, and I devoured this flirty, fun-to-read enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy in a single afternoon.

Gemma and Zach were polar opposites whose relationship began with more antagonism than attraction. It didn’t matter if they were tearing into each other or tearing each other’s clothes off, though, their chemistry sparked right off the page. These two next door neighbors were constantly bumping heads over everything from his playboy tendencies and need for a haircut to Gemma’s uptight ways. With a promotion hanging in the balance, Gemma gets Zach to agree to a complete makeover, and in the process, Zach isn’t the only one who gets a transformation. They both change the way they see each other as they discover that there is more to the other than meets the eye.

Monroe dished up an amusing, entertaining romance here with a fresh and very creative plot. Laugh-out-loud funny and fanning myself sexy, How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days gets 4.5 smooches from me!

REVIEW:

I love a good friends-to-lovers romance, and Lauren Blakely gave readers a truly fantastic one in Once Upon A Sure Thing. I stated in my review of Once Upon A Good Time, the first book in The Heartbreakers series, that this series was poised to become my favorite from her, and she definitely took a giant step in that direction with this book. This series is everything I hope for when I reach for a romantic comedy. These stories are light and fun and so sexy, and Blakely works her magic by blending heat and humor into three-hundred pages of banter-filled, book-based reading bliss.

In Once Upon A Sure Thing, the second Heartbreaker brother, Miller, and his long-time best friend, Ally, are up in a sweet and romantic best-friends-to-lovers romance. These two characters endeared themselves to me from the start, and I enjoyed every minute of their story so much. They already had loads of natural chemistry and an obviously deep connection as friends, but it was all sparks and fire when they stepped outside of the friend-zone into a mutually—ahem—beneficial scenario. Six years of suppressed desire, six years of denied emotion, six years of unacknowledged lust bubbled to the surface in a sexy eruption when Ally and Miller took another first in their relationship and started singing together. Their charismatic performances were positively electric, and it wasn’t long before they were heating up the studio—and burning up the sheets. Blakely takes readers along for the ride as Ally and Miller navigate these new feelings and figure things out.

Once Upon A Sure Thing was a feel-good, heart-fluttering, fanning-my-face story that left me happy and smiling when I finished reading it. An addictively charming love story between two people who were clearly meant to be, Once Upon A Sure Thing was a playful and passionate story that I simply could not put down. Blakely did the impossible and left me sated by this story yet hungry for the next one. Five smooches from me for Once Upon A Sure Thing by Lauren Blakely!

With a battered heart, I left for Vegas, determined to put her behind me. But eight years later, fate proved once again that it had never cared about my plans.

The Riscoffs might own this town, but I’m done following their rules.

If only I could forget just how easily Lincoln Riscoff can drag me under his spell.

Review

We are back in the turbulent, intense, emotional and hot world of Whitney and Lincoln while we continue to follow their steamy and drama fulled lives. Guilty as Sin picks up from the ending of ‘Richer Than Sin’ and we are immediately dragged back in and hooked onto their story. I couldn’t wait to devour this book and Meghan certainly didn’t disappoint.

I loved the first book and I knew this one wasn’t going to disappoint. One of the things I enjoyed about this one in particular was that was got more information on their pasts and the history involved which filled in a few missing gaps from the first story. We really get an in-depth look into the families and the past drama that has led to this point. I loved delving deeper into Whitney and Lincoln’s relationship as well- they are so explosive together: a car crash and a firework all rolled into one.

“No woman has ever affected me like Whitney Gable. Not before. Not since.”

As always with one of Meghan’s read, the plot was one big twisty, intense, fiery read that constantly had me on the edge of my seat…biting my nails and shouting at my kindle…desperate to know what was going to happen next. We might get some answers but we are also left with many questions.

“I’m fucking done. You leave, I leave.
End of story. ”

Lincoln is willing to fight for he wants and Whitney is cautious of allowing her heart to open to him with so much opposition and potential heart break. Will these two be able to overcome their families pasts and all the obstacles stacked against them? Or will old wounds resurface once again in this modern Romeo and Juliet style romance? Left with one hell of a cliffhanger it looks as though we are going to have to wait (not so patiently) for the next instalment to get all the answers we are so desperately waiting for.
