REVIEW:

Meghan Quinn is one of my go-to authors when I need some humor with my heat. I’m telling you, she has that nailed and always delivers a hot and hilarious story without missing a beat. I’ve read many of her books, laughing myself silly while simultaneously fanning myself—no easy feat, mind you, while also holding a Kindle. Some of the stuff she comes up with is so ridiculously absurd, and her verbal slapstick is my kryptonite. To this day, I cannot see or hear the word flaps without thinking of Meghan Quinn and her infamous character, Bellini. When an author can do that to me, when their words, whether they be emotionally meaningful or comically amusing, stay with me long after I’ve finished the book, I know I’ve struck gold.

See, here’s the thing, though, Quinn is by no means a one-dimensional author. Sure, her sense of humor is front and center, but Quinn is also quite stealthy in the way she manages to weave powerful emotions into her stories. Every single time – every.single.time. – she manages to surprise me with a sucker punch to the feels. I’ve read enough of her work to know that I’m not going to get a simple romantic comedy when I pick up one of her books. Oh no, there is going to be strong emotion and a sweet romance intertwined with all that wit and heat, and it’s definitely not going to be an afterthought, it’ll be an integral part of the story. I know this about her work, and yet the depth of feelings I experience when I read her work still never fails to amaze me. I don’t know why this is or how she manages to pull it off, I’m just grateful for that consistent reading experience.

Bourbon Sins is the first book in her re-titled, re-covered, re-edited and re-released Bourbon series, formerly known as the Jett Girl series. The Jett Girl series is some of Quinn’s earlier work and a series of hers I hadn’t yet read. I was offered the opportunity the read advance copies, and as soon as the books went live, I was click, click, clicking away. Bourbon Sins begins the complex story of Jett Colby, a wealthy and powerful New Orleans gentleman’s club owner, and Goldie, or Lo as he calls her, a down-on-her-luck cocktail waitress in one of the seediest strip clubs in the city. Bourbon Sins sets up Jett and Goldie’s three-book trilogy and lays the foundation for Jett’s righthand man, Kace’s, story. This story made my heart race with excitement and anticipation. I think it is by far the sexiest story I’ve read from Quinn to date, and that’s really saying something. I honestly have no idea where this will go, and I cannot wait to start the next book.

A richly developed, provocative, sultry tale meticulously layered with intrigue, sex, emotion and humor, Bourbon Sins sparked my appetite and left me craving the next book. I am positively captivated! Five smooches from me for Meghan Quinn’s Bourbon Sins!

I’m still trying to catch my breath when I leave and walk out the back door. Quickly glancing around to make sure Henry isn’t following me again, I walk down the garden path and head back inside the cottage.

I don’t have time to think about Ethan and that kiss, I remind myself.

I don’t have time to analyze the way that kiss made me feel, I also remind myself.

But fuck. It was a really good kiss.

But why did he kiss me? And why did I kiss him back?

Ugh! How dare he kiss me like that!

My mind is all over the place, I can’t keep up with my own thoughts. His proposal repeats in my head. I’m talking myself out of his offer then I’m talking myself into considering it. Would it really be so bad to have one night of fun while I’m here?

What am I even saying?

I palm my forehead, trying to smack the oxygen back into my brain.

This man is making me second-guess everything and is driving me absolutely crazy! I write about heroines who have one-night stands or who fuck a guy after just meeting them, but that isn’t real life. At least not for me. I’ve seen first hand what jumping into a relationship based off sex can do to a couple and it isn’t pretty.

Deciding to march back over there, I don’t bother knocking before letting myself back in. I stomp my way upstairs even though I have no idea where he went, I’m not thinking straight anymore. My heart is racing but I’m determined to give him a piece of my mind.

I’ve known Dylan for the last year or so. He’s our first baseman, and a Scrabble teammate in a monthly competition hosted by some friends, not to mention the winner of the Punniest Costume from Olivia’s most recent Halloween party, put on by her friend Henley at the Battery Park penthouse she shares with her husband, Max. Sporting a blue shirt, Dylan had draped a phone cord around his neck and hung a rubber chicken from it for Chicken Cord on Blue.

How have I never noticed his ass before? Maybe I was looking at the chicken. Although, in all fairness, I think I checked out his behind on the field in Central Park when he whacked a grand slam earlier this summer.

I wave. “Hi, Dylan!”

He stops a foot away from me. “Hey, Evie, person who’s not holding a cell phone like everyone else in the city. How do you function?”

I laugh. “I know. I’m a throwback.”

“And it’s not even TT. Throwback Thursday,” he says, quickly explaining. “You’re old-school interacting with the RW.” He pauses, peering at me through his brown eyeglasses. “That’s real world.”

“I figured as much.”

He laughs awkwardly. “Sorry. I get caught up.” He steps closer and offers a hand to shake. He stops. Shakes his head. “Wait. That’s weird. We can hug, right?”

A smile crosses my lips. “We can definitely hug IRL.”

He laughs again, and this time it’s not awkward.

As he wraps his arms around me, he says, “I was debating a cheek kiss, but that seemed old-fashioned. Same as a kiss on the hand. By the way, did my sister tell you she thinks I’m socially clueless?”

I don’t answer him right away, because his arms are so sturdy, stronger than I’d expected, and I’d nearly forgotten how tall he was—I’m guessing six foot one. And he smells so good, like deodorant, which is actually quite a nice scent on a man since it means he’s showered, and he’s clean.

I’m a big fan of clean.

REVIEW

I read romance typically. Like, I’m a heavy duty romance reader, but I have read this authors previous YA works and loved them. I didn’t exactly know what I was getting with Without Merit. But I want to start by saying this, this is a YA novel about family and secrets and mental health and so many many other things, with a very light side of romance.

All of that said, I really loved this book.

Colleen Hover has a way about her writing. A very delicate of touching on subjects that are important but too many people shy away from even talking about because they are scary or they are scared they will offend someone or hurt somebody. And she did this in Without Merit impeccably. My chest ached for this girl and her odd family that I somehow found endearing even when I thought they were being awful to one another. Even though they were incredibly quirky and flawed, but so very real.

As for the romance, it’s there in the form of Sagan. A wildly different boy than Merit’s loud, boisterous, odd family and all it’s quirks. He’s quiet, tentative, and he makes Merit incredibly angry. She loves him.

So this book y’all. It pulled at my heart strings. It made me laugh with all it’s craziness. It made me cry too many times to count. Sometimes happy tears. Sometimes tears so ugly my heart hurt for Merit. But most of all, this book made me remember that no matter how impossibly imperfect my family is, their mine and I love them. It made me want to pull my loud sometimes crazy momma closer. It made me want to tell my quiet, odd engineering brained husband that I loved him a little more. It made me want to cherish my children’s oddities, because their quirks make them so incredibly special.
