This was Josh. I could never…

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new forbidden, enemies-to-lovers story…

It all started with an unexpected phone call.

Two years after my fiancé passed away in an accident, his father died suddenly, leaving Brad’s adult, special-needs brother with no one to care for him.

The next thing I knew, I was on a cross-country drive to New Hampshire where I’d be moving in to look after Scottie until I could get him into a group home.

The last thing I ever expected?

I wouldn’t be taking care of him alone.

Josh Mathers, my fiance’s best friend—who also happened to be my sworn enemy—insisted he was the better person for the job. He told me to go back to California, and I told him where he could stick that demand.

Our disdain for each other wasn’t anything new. It dated back to a text I’d accidentally read years ago.

We hated each other. But we both loved Scottie, so neither of us budged.

Now we were living together in a tiny house—with one available bedroom. Thank goodness it was only temporary.

Over time, I realized the broody jerk I thought I knew was different than I’d imagined.

I found myself slowly growing attached to someone I once considered the enemy…and growing attracted to him.

Sure, both of us were guilt-ridden over Brad. We were also two grown people with pent-up frustration toward one another—stuck in a cabin in the woods.

But this was Josh.

I could never.

EXCERPT:

Josh sat at the table, casually having coffee as I walked into the house after my drive home from the salon. The smell of cigarettes emanated from him. He hadn’t smelled like that since the first day he arrived.

“Where’s Scottie?” I asked.

“In his room,” he answered without making eye contact.

I stated the obvious. “You smell like smoke.”

“Must be the firewood.” He brought his mug to his mouth.

“Bullsh*t. The pellet stove doesn’t emit any fumes.”

“Yeah. I caved and had one. Big deal.” He pointed toward the door. “I did it outside, though, while keeping an eye on Scottie through the window.”

“You’d been doing so well. What happened?”

He still wasn’t looking at me, and instead stared straight ahead. “Just human, I guess.”

Then something in front of him on the table caught my attention: pieces of ripped pages piled atop…my journal.

A rush of adrenaline shot through me. “Why do you have that?”

“It’s apparently your diary.”

“I’m quite aware of that.” My heart began to pound. “You were snooping in my room?”

He shot daggers at me. “Think, Carly. Of the two guys in this house, who is the one more likely to have been ransacking your room?”

“You were supposed to be watching him while I was at the salon,” I yelled.

“God forbid I take a piss in peace. Is it not bad enough that I’m showering with him now? Getting my balls tugged?”

I wanted to laugh, but this moment was far from funny.

“Scottie ripped those pages out?”

“The notebook is bright orange, like his iPad cover. Probably caught his attention. The drawer next to your bed was open, so he must have gone in there. I assume that’s where you kept it. Admittedly, I’d been letting him hang out in your room, but you sometimes do, too. I went to check on him, make sure he wasn’t doing anything bad, and found those pages strewn about.” A vein popped in his neck.

Josh was angry. Why? I should’ve been the angry one.

“Did you read it?”

“I only happened to see what was on the pages he ripped. I didn’t read anything else once I figured out what the hell it was.”

This is bad. Starting to sweat, I asked, “But how much did you see?”

He stood up from his seat and slowly approached me. With each step he took toward me, I took one back. When we could go no farther, he placed his arms on either side of me, leaning his hands against the wall.

And I forgot how to breathe.

Fear. Arousal. Embarrassment. You name it, I was feeling it right now.

Every emotion hit me at once.

His breath grazed my face. “How much did I actually see?” He paused.

“Enough to know you think I’m an evil pig.”

Ugh. No. Now his anger made sense.

When he backed away, I walked over to the ripped pages on the table and sifted through them.

“It’s the last one, for reference,” he noted.

I read what I’d written the other night.

REVIEW:

I Could Never by Penelope Ward is an exceptional contemporary romance novel that masterfully weaves a complicated enemies-to-lovers romance into a heartwarming and captivating love story. With a seamless blend of emotion, chemistry and character development, Ward delivered a story that me drew me in from the start. Ward’s writing is beautifully evocative, painting vivid scenes that transport me into the characters’ world. The pacing is perfectly balanced and allowed the relationship to develop in a natural and believable way. She incorporated moments of humor and vulnerability with all that emotion, which added layers of authenticity to the characters’ growth and transformation.

Set against a backdrop of shared connections, Penelope Ward introduced readers to new characters who are worlds apart, each harboring their own secrets and motivations. The palpable tension between Josh and Carly created a crackling atmosphere that was electric from the very beginning, and their witty banter and genuine animosity made for a relationship that gradually evolved into something deeper and more meaningful.

With skillful storytelling, well-developed characters and the perfect blend of tension and tenderness, Penelope Ward’s I Could Never was an exceptionally executed and engaging enemies-to-lovers romance. Sizzling chemistry, an addictive storyline, and the slow-burn build-up of the romance made this a page-turning pleasure-to-read. But the emotional depth and authenticity of the characters’ struggles is what truly made their eventual romance all the more rewarding and satisfying. Five smooches from me for I Could Never by Penelope Ward!

I spend my days brewing beer for the popular Brew Crüe Beer Company and my nights devoted to being a dad. Raising a young child with special needs can be tough and stressful, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. He’s everything to me, and the reason I keep going. It’s him and me against the world, and I have no intention of changing that.

Then, Kinsley McGregor walks back into my life.

Letting her go all those years ago was the hardest thing I had ever done, and having her here proves how good we are. Unfortunately, her Nashville life is calling, and I will have to let her go again.

This time, it’s not just my heart I risk, but my four-year-old son’s too.

Kinsley

My entire life explodes on television for the whole world to witness. After my husband’s public affair throughout the course of my very first headlining tour, I retreat to my safe haven: Stewart Grove. I need a place to lick my wounds and figure out my next step, without being under the watchful eye of the paparazzi, and I find it in my hometown.

I wasn’t planning to reconnect the man I left behind, along with his adorable son.

Tucker Dunn was everything I ever wanted before I went to Nashville to chase my country music dreams. Leaving him in Stewart Grove wasn’t easy, but it was the path we chose together.

RELEASE BLITZ: Hideaway Heart by Melanie Harlow

HIDEAWAY HEART, an all-new forced proximity, body guard/country star, small-town romance from USA Today Bestselling Author, Melanie Harlow, is available now!

I’d put my life in his hands.

Just don’t ask me to give him my heart…

All I wanted was a break—two weeks off from being Pixie Hart, country music sensation, and fourteen days of peace, privacy, and solitude as plain old Kelly Jo Sullivan.

But thanks to some overzealous paparazzi, my family refuses to let me go anywhere alone, and I’m stuck sharing this tiny cabin with a tall, dark, and bearded bodyguard.

And guess what? There’s only one bed.

Well, he can couch it.

Xander Buckley might be hotter than a stolen blow torch, and I get that he’s a former Navy SEAL and all, but the man gives new meaning to the words overbearing, overprotective, bossy alpha male. I can’t even post a photo on social media without him warning me it’s not safe, or take a morning jog without him following behind.

But he’s made it clear that what he says goes, and if I don’t like it, I can kiss my vacation goodbye.

Instead, I end up kissing him.

I don’t even know how it happened—one minute we were at each other’s throats, the next we were at each other’s mercy. What’s even more shocking is how good we are together. He understands my need for freedom, and I understand his need for control.

But emotional trust doesn’t come easily to me. And we’re on two completely different paths.

Without question, I’d put my life in his hands.

Just don’t ask me to give him my heart.

REVIEW:

Hideaway Heart by Melanie Harlow is the second book in her Cherry Tree Harbor series. Harlow flawlessly weaves together the bodyguard-falls-for-the-celebrity storyline with the cozy charm of a small-town setting. Her masterful storytelling brings to life an endearing cast of characters. As the sparks fly between the strong, protective bodyguard and the charismatic country star seeking a break from the grind of her celebrity, Kelly and Xander begin a journey filled with humor, heart and sizzling chemistry. The forced proximity, single bed situation created an electric dynamic between them and ramped up their emotional rollercoaster, keeping me hooked from start to finish.

Melanie Harlow delivered a captivating romance in Hideaway Heart that was charming, steamy and emotionally satisfying. The small-town backdrop adds a layer of authenticity to the story, and I was as invested in the community and as I was the characters’ lives. Harlow’s storytelling flows effortlessly, and she seamlessly blends heart-tugging moments with humorous ones. A perfect mix of witty banter, tender moments, sexy romance and a dash of suspense, Hideaway Heart was an engaging, unputdownable page-turner that kept me smiling the whole way through. BLOG TOUR WITH EXCERPT: The Way I Hate Him by Meghan Quinn

THE WAY I HATE HIM, an all-new enemies-to-lovers, small-town romantic comedy from USA Today Bestselling Author, Meghan Quinn, is available now!

Scroll down for an excerpt!

Will I be able to follow my heart or will the way I hate him blind me from the love I feel?

Why am I holding a box of stolen memorabilia formerly owned by my ex-boyfriend’s boss in my arms? It’s called . . . revenge.

After failing my last semester for my masters degree, I decided to come back to my hometown of Almond Bay and wallow in self pity while my boyfriend told me everything was going to be okay. To my dismay, instead of open arms, he greeted me with a box to move my things.

Now I’m not a petty person, but when he told me he broke up with me because I was boring, there’s only so much of the higher road I can take. Hence the box of memorabilia I took from him.

The plan? To give it back to his boss, who happens to be my brother’s nemesis, and get the ex fired. But plans never go the way you want them, because instead of dropping off the box with a note, I’m pinned with the crime by Hayes Farrow himself.

And because my life is so pathetic, he gives me two options: turn me into the police and press full charges or . . . work it off. How could I possibly work for someone I can’t stand? Easy, I don’t look good in orange.

But working for Hayes isn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. The hate I had for him begins to turn into something else – something deeper, something I never thought I’d feel.

Unfortunately there are still old grudges and family drama to deal with. And what happens when my brother finds out that I’m working for the guy he hates more than anyone else in the world? Will I be able to follow my heart or will the way I hate him blind me from the love I feel?

EXCERPT:

“Thank you for dinner, by the way. Would you consider this to be our first date?”

He shakes his head as he stands next to me, not taking a seat either. “Nah, I’d need to pick you up, bring you flowers, the works. Make it official.”

“You don’t have to bring me flowers, but I bet Mac would like some.”

“Yeah, get on her good side?” He smirks. “But to answer your question, this is just a hangout.”

I love that smirk so much. It’s odd seeing him use it so freely. It makes me realize how guarded he was before. It was so rare to see his smile. But this Hayes, he’s relaxed, like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders, and I’m sure it has. “Okay, so when is our first date?”

He picks at the cheese on his pizza. “Whenever you’re free.”

“Do you think I have a complicated calendar? I just got done crying in my sister’s room for a week. I’m pretty free.”

His lips soften. “How about tomorrow night?”

“Wow, don’t you think that’s a little soon?” He gives me an exhausted look, and I chuckle. “Just kidding, that would be perfect. What do you have planned? Do I need to dress up?”

“Nothing fancy,” he says. “But you know . . . if you want to wear a dress like you wore when you were at Sozzled, I won’t be mad about it.”

“Ooo, you liked that, did you?”

He nods, the sultriness in his eyes making me feel all warm inside. “I did. You looked really pretty.”

Really pretty.

Can’t tell you the last time someone said that to me. Matt never doled out any compliments.

Head tilted down, I quietly say, “Thank you.”

His finger lifts my chin as he says, “You know, you blush a lot. It makes me think you’re shy around me.”

“I wouldn’t say shy.” He releases me as I wipe my fingers on my napkin and pick up my Diet Coke to take a sip. “But you know . . . I’ve never been spoken to how you speak to me. You’re honest—well, when you’re not trying to push me away—”

“Not because I wanted to,” he adds.

“I know. But you’re honest. You say what’s on your mind, and before, with Matt or any other guy I’ve dated, they weren’t particularly vocal about my looks. They rarely complimented me. Not that I needed them to survive, but it’s always nice to hear every once in a while. So yeah, I might blush because I’m not used to someone telling me I’m pretty or that they liked my dress.” I shrug, feeling awkward.

His brow pulls together. “Those boys you were with before clearly didn’t know how to treat you the way you deserve. Their loss, my gain.”

And that’s the kind of answer I’d expect from Hayes. He’s passionate and possessive, everything Matt was not. I know this will be different. I have a feeling that being with Hayes will be unprecedented, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

REVIEW:

Meghan Quinn kicks off a new small-town series with The Way I Hate Him, a brother’s-former-best-friend, rock-star, age-gap, enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy. Quinn’s writing is filled with humor, heart and a generous dose of steam, making for a perfect blend of romance and comedy. If you’re a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope and quirky small-town settings, this book is a not-to-be-missed, must-read. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated in dual POV by Teddy Hamilton and Vanessa Edwin. I’ve listened to many audiobooks narrated by this pair, and their natural chemistry is simply incredible. Their performances were absolutely on point, and they delivered a wide range of emotions that brought both of these characters to life in my ears.

Set in Almond Bay, a charming small town full of interesting side characters including a matriarchal band of busy-body old biddies and a meddling grandmother, the story follows Hayes, a moody, broody rock star who’s back in his hometown to regroup, write and spend time with his grandmother, and Hattie, the youngest sister of his ex-best-friend and the ex-girlfriend of his recently fired assistant. There was some deep emotion to wade through here for both Hattie and Hayes, and those heartstring-pulling, tender moments really balanced out the humorous ones. The witty banter and sizzling chemistry between the main characters make for an engaging read that kept me smiling, swooning and rooting for their love to triumph.

Meghan Quinn has crafted a romcom gem in The Way I Hate Him. The characters are well-developed and endearing, each with their own quirks and vulnerabilities that make them feel real and relatable, and the small-town setting added plenty of charm and depth to the story. As Hayes and Hattie’s animosity morphs into an irresistible attraction, I found myself completely invested in their journey and unable to put the book down. A heartwarming, funny and thoroughly entertaining enemies-to-lovers romcom, The Way I Hate Him left me with a huge smile and an unnecessary reminder of why I love Meghan Quinn’s storytelling so much. Five smooches from me for The Way I Hate Him by Meghan Quinn!
