Things Liars Fake by Sara Ney Review
4 Smooches
Synopsis
What if…
Someone you barely knew asked you for a favor.
What if…
They needed you to be something you weren’t, in exchange for nothing. Unless you count a mouth full of lies and a half-broken heart. Faker. Pretender. Liar. There are worse things to be called.
So would you do it? Would you?
Daphne Winthrop did.
And you’re about to find out what happens in the end.
Review
‘Good lord he smells freaking fantastic. Like a fresh shower and fresh air and wintergreen toothpaste. The truth blindsides me: I’m insanely attracted to this guy. He’s such a dork. But so, so cute.’
I have quickly fallen for this fun and flirty novella series by Sara Ney and Things Liars Fake is no different. Fast, fun and sexy this was a great way to spend and afternoon curled up on the couch. Daphne and Dexter are not your typical hero/heroine but I loved them all the same. Daphne is a pretty girl who is stuck being the single one in her group. When a bow tie and glasses wearing man catches her eye she is surprised but when they run into each other at a sci-fi movie it turns out they have more in common than either expected. But Dexter is convinced she is far out of his league but needs her as a friend to pretend to be his girlfriend for the sake of getting his family off his back. Can these two move out of the friend-zone and make their fake relationship real?
“Talk nerdy to me, Daphne.”
Daphne and Dexter’s story put a smile on my face from beginning to end. Full of hilarious moments and a ton of sexual tension this geeky romance is not one to miss. The story was cute and entertaining and I even loved the cheesy aspects of it personally. I mean come on he is a dorky guy named DEXTER who wears suspenders and bowties. Yet instead of my normal eye roll I would give something like that, it only seemed to add to the fun and quirky nature. If you are looking for a story to make you giggle and smile and maybe even make your cheeks redden with blush this one will hot the spot!

About HE WILL BE MY RUIN:
The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her suspense debut with this sexy, heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.
A woman who almost had it all . . .
On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?
A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .
Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.
Until he became her ruin.
On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Excerpt
These are Celine’s most private things. No one was ever supposed to find them.
With slightly shaky hands, I shift my focus to the bottom of the closet, where shoe boxes and storage containers are stacked in tidy piles. I toss them about, rooting through the contents, anxious over what I might find.
Until I come to a decorative box of dangly necklaces and bracelets, made from giant stones. An uneducated person might mistake them for costume jewelry, but I know that the diamonds are real. I can tell by their sparkle. Several receipts sit at the bottom of the box, indicating a pawnshop where it looks like Celine had already sold some pieces.
I crawl on my hands and knees to check under the bed. Nothing but a single dust bunny—the soul survivor of Celine’s excessive cleaning regime—hides there.
I toss the lamp onto the recently delivered and freshly made bed—the silk white shade bends but I don’t care—and pull apart the makeshift end table, yanking the long and narrow crates apart to hit the hardwood in a loud clatter.
Books spill out everywhere.
The crates are full of little books, ranging from pink journals with unicorns to leather-bound diaries with locks. No keys included.
I didn’t know Celine kept a diary. But of course she did. She liked keeping track of everything. It only makes sense that she would keep track of her life.
I gather every last one and spread them out across the bed. Hoping that somewhere in here I’ll find a reasonable answer…
Dreading the truth.

Review
WOW! Where do even begin when reviewing this insanely addictive and suspenseful book. I adore K.A. Tuckers books and while many of her other novels have been romances that develop during the course of a mystery this story is incredibly unique from those in that while it has some small romantic and sexual aspects the main focus is on solving the crime and the twists and turns that happen during the course of the main characters investigation.
“This man was once my salvation. Now he will be my ruin.”
So often in the book I thought I knew who this tag line was talking about only to turn the page and have a whole new theory. I love to be kept on my twos and the way the information slowly unfolded for Maggie, our heroine, made it impossible to guess what the outcome would be.
“Money is a tantalizing whore, isn’t she.”
Maggie is in New York, a place she hates, to pack up the belongs of her closest friend who has just dies of an apparent suicide but during the process it is clear that things just do not add up and soon one small hunch turns into a full fledged attempt to get all the information she can and solve the murder of her dearest friend, a friend who had way more secrets than Maggie could have ever guessed. I so desperately want to dissect and reveal every surprising plot twist but then you my dear reader would know them all way too soon but trust me each page is like a puzzle piece and they don’t all fit together perfectly till you get to the very end.
“I have an unwritten rule against two dicks in one day. It’s a new rule, because the opportunity has never arisen before, but it’s one I’m feeling committed to.”
While the book has a very serious tone to it overall, KA Tucker did a great job at lightening the mood here and there to keep the story moving. As always I adore her writing style and love how her characters always feel so real to me. A true highlight for me was that this book was more about the depths of friendship than anything else. Maggie and Celine had been best friends for most of their lives and that kind of love and commitment does not disappear upon death.
“Everyone has secrets.”
He Will Be My Ruin is fast paced, suspenseful and will have you guessing all the way through.

Chasing Spring by R.S. Grey Review
4.5 Smooches
Synopsis
I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.
I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.
To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.
I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.
Review
“Why aren’t you as messed up as I am, Chase? After everything that’s happened?”
I don’t read a ton of YA anymore and now after reading Chasing Spring I am reminded why I have always loved it so much. There is just something about watching people tether the lines between their childhood and becoming adults. RS Grey has written that line beautifully and full of emotion.
‘But Chase had said it best: this was our story and happy endings are few and far between.’
Lilah and Chase were best friends, until her mom dies and she left. Now they are nothing anymore. But Lilah is back in the small town they both call home and circumstances have Chase living with her and her dad. She is determined to avoid him for her senior year before she can get away for good but each moment she is near him that becomes more and more impossible. Both Chase and Lilah have incredibly tragic past involving their mothers who were best friends but each has dealt with it completely differently to the point it is so unclear if the two of them could ever move past it all to become friend again or possibly even more.
‘I’d never asked him to take me to the gray. I was perfectly happy living in the black.’
I have been a huge fan of R.S. Grey’s since I picked up my first book by her and will be honest was apprehensive of this new story. I love her contemporary romantic comedy so when I heard that this was going to be a more serious mature young adult novel dealing with issues such as substance abuse, death and abandonment I was nervous. This could not have been more different but R.S. proved that she is not to be pigeonholed and that she can write the heck out of a more serious topic.
‘I hated how stubbornly I loved Lilah.’
I do want to stress that while I call this mature YA that has more to do with the seriousness of the issues involved and the maturity of the characters than it has to do with sex and any kind of sexual relationship. I am not saying there is not a incredibly strong romance with definite sexual undertones to it, because there is, I just don’t want yo going into this story with the idea that you are going to get more out of it in that area than is intended. But trust me, you don’t need it. The story is strong and the plot dynamic. You will be grabbed from page one and like me you will be so happy you gave this YA book a shot.

Excerpt
I tucked my fingers under her chin and lifted her face to mine, stealing a kiss; true distress clawed at my chest, traveled like a spike down my spine. I didn’t want to guess, or entertain any possibilities. Inevitably, my mind always jumped to the worst possible conclusion whenever I saw her inexplicably sad (i.e. brain tumor).
Even so, I attempted to keep my tone level and calm. “What could be too important for the greeting card aisle? It’s the perfect place to tell me anything and everything. There’s likely a card we can buy afterward for the occasion.”
She huffed a laugh, laughed a bit more, and then began crying again.
Her laughter was a good sign, so I went with it.
“Let’s see . . .” I shuffled us both to the rack and plucked a greeting card from it. “You tell me if this one describes your situation.” I cleared my throat and began to read, “Dear Brother, Many blessings on your fortieth birthday. May your girlfriend bring home that hot girl she works with and suggest a three-way.”
Fiona began laughing in earnest, burying her face against my chest.
I returned the original card, walked us a few steps farther down the aisle, and selected another card at random. “Here’s another. Dear Friend, Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I am so lucky to have you in my life, especially after that time I hit you with my car and salted the earth around your house.
I cracked a smile as I grabbed another card. She was laughing so hard she could barely breathe.
“Dear Co-worker, Get well soon. Sorry about the scorpions in your bed. And the leprosy. And the chlamydia.”
“Stop! I can’t- I can’t breathe.” Fiona gripped the front of my shirt as though she needed my solid frame to remain upright.
I took one more step and picked a new card. “Dear Dad, Happy Father’s Day. I know I’m not your favorite child, but I hope you will . . . you will . . .” I stopped reading because Fiona had stopped laughing.
In fact, she’d grown eerily still, though her fists remained anchored in my shirt. I don’t think she was even breathing.
“Fe?”
She released an audible exhale—as though bracing herself—and titled her head back. New tears shone in her eyes and she looked . . . emotional.
Not sad. Not worried or scared. Just emotional.
And I knew.
“I’m going to be a dad,” I said.
She nodded, her mouth wanting to smile but her eyes betraying the disordered chaos of her thoughts.
I had no idea what she was thinking.
I had no idea what I was thinking.
But I felt like I’d just been punched, slapped across the face. And it felt scary. And good.
I felt like I was the king of the universe, the luckiest man alive.
I felt panic, because I didn’t know how to be a dad, at least not the kind I wanted to be.
I felt a bizarre surge of pride, of accomplishment.
I felt a heady wave of possessiveness, for this woman I loved, for the child we’d made. I felt responsible.
But I did not feel burdened.
And I knew nothing would ever be the same.
About the Author
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).
By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

Review
‘Over the years I’d learned absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. The heart becomes wary, somnolent and cynical during periods of prolonged absence, burdened with cares and fears borne in solitude. However, absence does make the body grow greedy and irrationally amorous with frustrated need.’
I very rarely stay up all night reading, I have an eye issue which makes this close to impossible and yet two or three times a year I come across a book that is absolutely impossible to put down. I stayed up till 4am to read Happily Ever Ninja and despite the headache I endured it was worth every second. If you are a long time fan of the Knitting In The City series you have been desperate for feisty Fiona and her often MIA husband Greg’s story. If you are new to the series I highly recommend you at least read their FREE prequel novella, Ninja At First Sight in order to see how these two fell in love and watch everything be set in motion.
“We haven’t talked through everything yet. I’m angry with you, and I know you’re still upset with me.” He shrugged. “Then we’ll have angry intercourse.” “We’re not having intercourse.” “Then I’ll give you angry cunnilingus.”
There are so few books out there where the two main protagonists are already married, especially in the contemporary category. Look and you will mostly find books about falling in love or follow up books where they get married and the woman gets pregnant. So how completely refreshing to find a story not about live at first sight but instead about an enduring and lasting and flawed love. Maintaining a love that last fifteen years is not easy and is not without regret and sacrifice and yet Fiona and Greg have not only wadded in these murky waters they have swam laps of them and come out stronger for it.
‘Each marriage is a living thing, just as complex as the two individuals within it.’
While Fiona is clearly the badass star of this book (if you have read the previous book you know that Fiona is a former badass and current stay at home mom) but Greg is like a slow build love. I go from being frustrated with him, to being sympathetic to him to flat out loving him with the ferocity it is clear that Fiona does. He is witty and socially conscious and even though he if often away from home he strives to be a fixture and influence in his children’s lives. Fiona and Greg face so many obstacles, some large (and by large I mean BIG PICTURE large not just can we make this relationship work large) and some that might seem trivial to some but all of them matter and all of them make this story so uniquely beautiful and poignant.
“You’re ridiculous.” And I loved that he replied as expected. “It’s pronounced remarkable, darling.”
From the gentle love to the action packed crisis’s I adored every moment of Happily Ever Ninja and by the end I only wanted more from these two. They have so much to show and share with us that I can’t imagine ever getting tired of them (or anyone in the Knitting gang really.) Penny is a master at giving us a story we didn’t know we were desperate for and can’t imagine having lived without. I can not stress enough that whether you are reading this as an extension of the series or as a standalone your day, week, year will be better for it!
