The second scorching novel in the USA Today bestselling Cartel trilogy from the smash-hit author Lili St Germain.

They say love conquers all.

It’s a lie.

Five days a week, I dressed in smart business clothes. I painted my face, and went to work as an accountant. But nothing about my life was normal.

For eight years I had been the property of the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club. I laundered their money so well they’d never let me leave. My only glimmer of light was the man I loved. The man who had saved me.

Dornan.

His love had been the only thing that kept the demons at bay. But he’d become so immersed in the cartel’s brutal business that I hardly knew him anymore.

Dornan had been my salvation, but he was also my undoing.

Would he pull me down into the darkness until he destroyed me? Could I save him?

Did I even want to?

EXCERPT

I recoiled as I felt her blood hit my cheek, the deafening roar of my gun something that was becoming far too familiar. Allie hit the dirt before I’d even blinked, the force of the bullet sending her straight onto her back.

Above the steady drum of the rain, I heard movement outside. Jesus. Was she still alive? I opened the door as quietly as I could and slipped out, pressing it shut behind me. The rain was brutal, and I could barely see in front of me. I circled around the back of the pickup, gun at the ready, my eyes searching for any movement as I rounded the corner of the truck and happened upon Allie. There was blood coming from her mouth, and she had one arm outstretched, reaching clumsily for her gun. In her dying moments, she didn’t look like a bitch anymore. She looked like a sad, lost little girl, and I silently cursed Murphy for pulling her into this hellish existence. For the first time, I realized that she was younger than me, just a young woman who fell in love with the wrong man. Don’t we all.

She saw me, and her hand reached for the gun more desperately. Before she could grab it and take a shot at me, I placed my bare foot on her wrist, pinning it to the ground.

She looked up at me, her eyes sad.

‘I thought he loved me,’ she choked.

I nodded, crouching beside her. ‘That’s the thing about men like Murphy,’ I said softly. ‘They’re not capable of love, Allie. They only know how to destroy.’

She seemed to soften, her eyes closing momentarily. Blinking back tears, she gazed up at me. ‘I don’t want to die,’ she whispered. ‘I didn’t know.’

I nodded sympathetically, pushing her hair back from her face.

Before she could do anything, I placed my hand over her mouth and squeezed her nose shut between my thumb and index finger. Shock and realization lit up in her eyes as she thrashed her head back and forth beneath my grip.

‘That’s the difference between you and me,’ I said to her, as she clawed at my hand and sucked against my palm for air. ‘I’m old enough to know better.

Synopsis

Hayleigh
I know nothing of love.
Then again, I don’t know much about people
I’ve been burned enough to have lost my faith in them
Brannon seems to be an exception
For years, he has proved that I could trust him
But my past would surely drive him away
The question is, can he trust me?

Brannon
Hayleigh is not my fate
But, she is my destiny
I need to convince her to trust me, to believe in us
For years I’ve stood back, and given her time
Now I need her to light the dark that is slowly consuming me
I want to tell her all of my secrets
The question is, will she survive them?

*Part of a series, while it can be read as a standalone, the story continues to build through the following books are are best read in order.
**Recommended for 18+ due to sexual content and language

Review

Brannon knows Hayleigh is interested in him but he also knows she’s holding back not only from home but her friends. She’s scared and envious and sad and he doesn’t know why. But he knows what he feels even if they aren’t fated, he loves her and isn’t going to give up. Hayleigh has a secret, a past that has ruined so much before so now she stands back and although she loves where she is now and the people around her she’s never let herself become truly part of their group….but maybe it’s time to change that.

“The first time I met Hayleigh—I fell in love. An eternal love that had seeded itself so deep in my heart, I knew no one else(fated or not) would ever erase what I felt for her.”

As with the others in this series I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The Fae are such interesting and magical creatures and this author has created a group of characters that I have fallen in love with. Brannon and Hayleigh are the next couple we follow and both have secrets they are keeping that are slowly fracturing their lives in different ways.

“He doesn’t understand why I’m fighting him so hard. But, the truth is, I’m not cut out for the life my friends have.”

Brannon is a loveable character, the easy going person of the group and the fact he is harbouring such torture in what he has been tasked to do, the fact he can still be so happy for everyone else makes him so attractive. He’s caring, sexy, determined and so strong!

“SOLITUDE IS MY ENEMY. When I’m alone, I’m left with nothing but silence and my own thoughts. Heavy thoughts, weighing me down.”

Hayleigh is a fragile at first with the way she sets herself back and doesn’t become attached, as she’s afraid they will be ripped away from her once her secret is revealed. But she becomes strong and brave as the story progresses and eventually starts to realise she deserves the love that surrounds her.

“Now, I’ve got my own secret, one that hurts my heart and soul, slowly breaking me.”

As with the others, this story interlinked with the others and I love re-visiting the other couples we have met previously. We also carry on trying to discover what Aodhagan was a part of and what part he plays in the wider plan. In this story however, Hayleigh’s past plays an important role and the story of who her family is, and the reason behind why she never lets herself get close, comes as a huge and unexpected surprise!

“Beautiful isn’t strong enough to describe you when you smile, Hayleigh. You light up my world in the worst of circumstances, but when you smile or laugh, my entire universe rights itself and I feel whole.”

As always it’s a sexy, thrilling, intriguing ride that always has a great element of laughter and fun that has me smiling and wanting to read the next. I can’t wait for Kendrix story as we were left on perhaps the biggest cliffhanger yet!

Review

“…I can feel people wanting me to fail.”

Sasha Brooks, or Sasha B-Fierce as her coworkers refer to her, is the calm, cool, collected picture of professionalism, or at least she appears to be. Inwardly, however, she is anything but calm, cool or collected. Having been blindsided as a teenager with some previously unknown truths regarding her personal history, everything Sasha believed about herself was suddenly not true. Overwhelmed when confronted in a humiliating way with this information, she succumbed to her first panic attack in what her therapist refers to as the traumatic trigger that started her anxiety attack disorder. Years of therapy, experience dealing with the situations that are her personal triggers, as well as her finely honed ability to recognize the onslaught of her symptoms have all helped Sasha hide her disorder from her family as well as her friends.

“Brian was attracted to a woman who was self-assured and put-together. Not one who had to snap a hair band to keep from freaking out in social situations.”

Brian Carpenter has been in love with Sasha Brooks for eight years. A mutual attraction between the two of them has always burned, but it’s complicated given that Brian is also Sasha’s boss, and they’ve settled into a relationship that is a combination of colleagues and friends. Knowing how important her career is to her, Brian is left with no choice but to accept being relegated to the friend-zone. Brian has taken the opportunity to really get to know Sasha – minus the anxiety attacks or the information that triggered her disorder. His love for her has never waivered, and after eight years of loving her from afar, he’s grown tired of his friends-only status and devises a plan that he hopes will ultimately result in a relationship with Sasha that includes her returning his love.

“I’m not the girl you think you know.”

The two enter into a sexual relationship that is defined by some carefully crafted rules by Brian. The more time they spend together, and with Brian’s rules guiding Sasha where he wants her to go, it’s no surprise that’s she’s finally acknowledged her true feelings for Brian. Unfortunately the timing of this realization collides with her learning that he also kept some crucial professional information from her, breaking one of Sasha’s very few – but critically important – rules in their relationship. The culmination of all of this emotional upheaval all at once is the mother of all panic attacks during a very public situation. In the aftermath of her attack, a humiliated and defeated Sasha has no choice but to finally tell him about her disorder and her past. Emotionally overwhelmed and assuming that he couldn’t possibly love her upon learning these things about her, Sasha lets Brian go.

“…a happily ever after wasn’t in my future.”

Fleeing to her parents home to regroup, Sasha gets some enlightening, well timed and perfectly worded parental advice has her rethinking things and doing some self re-examination. Her parents’ words, coupled with an explanation and clarification of the professional information by Brian’s boss and childhood best friend, all have Sasha scrambling to reach Brian in time. But is it too little, too late?

“Do you really think I don’t know you, Sasha Jayne Brooks?”

As an avid romance and erotica fan, I’m very accustomed to reading novels featuring an imperfect hero. It is rare when it is the heroine that is imperfect, and this book is an example of one that is very well done. I enjoyed this story very much. While Sasha had many issues to overcome, she faced them, bravely, one at time, every single day by going into situations that were known triggers and excelling in them. Reading about her slowly letting her guard down with Brian and fall deeper into this relationship was very rewarding. The author did a fantastic job of taking the reader into Sasha’s head as she worked through her fears.

This book was well written and the relationship between Brian and Sasha was lovely to watch unfold. Brian proved time and time again that he absolutely did know Sasha as he took her reactions into consideration with each step as he nudged their relationship forward. 4.5 smooches for Ask Me Something from me!

Review

This is one of those stories that had all the prerequisite elements to being a great book.  In theory the characters and storyline along with certain dramatic incidents should have produced an exciting and sensual read but unfortunately what I found was a fairly unconvincing plot along with weak and unengaging characters that tended to use over flowery and saccharine sweet dialogue, which in turn just seemed to highlight how schmaltzy and cheesy everything was.  I love romance, I live for romance but in The Five stages of Riley Winters it was overkill and at times I felt like I was reading a nineteen-eighties Mills and Book with Fabio on the front cover.  It is as though she used every known cliche in the romance genre and amplified it.

There were parts of this book I just could not get into, others I liked well enough and others that just didn’t make sense.  The timeline of events is much too quick.  Our hero Liam is a speech therapist by day and rock star by night, who after only one day of knowing our heroine Riley, decides it is great professional practise to join his new client Riley’s son and her on a family outing.  The relationship is harried and never develops fully, there was a ton of potential to prove how strong and resilient Riley was after suffering at the hands of her ex-husband but she came across as rather whiney and unrealistic.  Unfortunately it wasn’t just the main characters that felt a little stuffy.  The relationship between Riley and her sister didn’t gel either, it felt forced rather than fun and loving.  Liam was an okay hero.  He had all the right words to say and at times was very sweet but he too often seemed too good to be true.

‘He removes his hand from my hair and places both of his hands in his pockets.  “Riley, I’m sorry if I am freaking you out, but I have never met anyone like you.”

“What do you mean, like me?” I ask confused.

“No, no, nothing bad, Riley.  It’s just that your eyes tell me that you have a story that is hidden there, but your smile says otherwise.  You’re just a pretty little mystery.”’

The Five Stages of Riley Winters was an okay read but I wouldn’t say it had a lasting effect on me.  It will be one of those books that you will either love or dislike depending on your preferences but for me it just didn’t work out.  I can see definite potential in the author however, and I would read another book she writes but I feel that time and experience would better benefit here.

Love’s Sacrifice by Erin Everleigh Review

Synopsis

I am nothing like my family. But I’m held captive by their secrets and lies.

I should have listened to that voice in my head and left Susan alone. But I couldn’t just walk away. She was the only brightness in my life—a life of living in the shadows cast by the evil that surrounded me.

She taught my heart to love. But in return, she was forced to run away and leave everything behind, including me. After that, my life was never the same.

I no longer live—I survive. I survive to protect her from my family.

I didn’t deserve another chance with Susan, but an accidental meeting years later gave me just that. And selfishly, I couldn’t let her go—I never could. Unfortunately, neither would my family.

Only able to communicate in secret, Susan and I had to wait for the day that my family’s truths would be exposed and we could finally be together. Until then, I would tell their lies and keep my silence. But I will have my revenge.

Some would think our story is one of loss. But sometimes through loss, we discover the most precious gifts of all.

Review

I may have only read one book from Erin but this woman certainly knows how to write with emotion and cram every feeling imaginable into every single word that builds up the bigger picture.  If you haven’t read her first book Absolute Love I would recommend it as this one delves in deeper to those characters pasts.  Love’s Sacrifice is raw and edgy and oh so goddamn heart breaking.  The tragic and horrendous circumstances surrounding Phoebe’s mum Susan and her mysterious and dark past comes into play in this book, we get to see how deeply she fell in love with Aaron and how awful and life changing it all was as it was all ripped away from them.  It might be a story of love lost but there is a beautiful and hopeful element to it as well, with reconnections, truths revealed and of course the ultimate sacrifice for love.  I really don’t want to give too much of the storyline away as it is certainly one you need to read and experience and hurt over on your own merit but don’t go into this lightly as there isn’t really a happy ever after but something more akin to new beginnings for different people.  Erin is a brilliant author and I can certainly see more incredible and moving books from her in the future, especially when she demonstrates this level of writing and understanding of her characters; they remain consistent yet complex and deliver some of the best drama and romance imaginable.

‘“The walk back to my apartment has been very sobering.  My mind has continued on its tortuous path down memory lane.  It’s been comforting to think about the good times-a time when our youth and naivete had us believing that our lives would be open to so many possibilities.  However the memories are like a vice grip on my heart, each one squeezing a little tighter crushing the life out of me.”’

This was the perfect companion novel for Absolute Love, the sadness and strength that emanated from Susan was remarkable and gave us a deeper regard for her character.  Aaron too was heartbreaking but so strong and resilient and both of them together showed the most beautiful sense of sacrifice for the other.

Blurb
Living in Sin

Jace Jamison is every woman’s fantasy. He’s everything and anything you want him to be. He’s a highly paid escort.

Adrienne Miller works as an event planner, constantly working at numerous events, and always seeing a man she can only describe as a god-like creature. He’s devastatingly handsome, tall, and has beautiful blue eyes, but he’s always with a different woman.

After a few chance encounters with Jace, Adrienne’s best friend convinces her to just get some good sex out of him and not worry about who she’s seen him with.

What happens when she finds out that he isn’t dating these women because he wants to, but because he’s paid to? Will living in sin cost him what he never knew he wanted?

Unforgivable Sin

In book two of The Escort Series, Troy Thompson and Emilie Watson are finally admitting their feelings and thinking about giving a relationship a try. What happens, though, when being an escort in Sin City isn’t the only problem to worry about when starting a new relationship?

Someone from Troy’s past is back. Carla was the love of his life, his ex-fiancée, and the woman who committed what most consider an unforgivable sin. A sin that forced him to believe he’d never love or trust another woman again.

Is Carla back to heal old wounds and get closure, or is she back to do whatever’s necessary to be the only woman in Troy’s life, leaving Emilie to wonder if her and Troy’s connection is strong enough to withstand the return of his past?

Sins & Mistrust

Marc Edwards is a male escort in Sin City. He’s used to catering to his clients every fantasy, and also used to keeping parts of himself from the people closest to him.

He gains a client who’s unlike any other client he’s had. Nathalia LaBelle actually tries to get to know non-escort Marc. She wants to find out what it is he fantasizes about, and she’s not bothered by the nature of his job.

Has Marc found someone to open up to? Will Nathalia be able to handle what he desires? What he craves?

But what happens when Lincoln Cash, a man who has his own special relationship with Nathalia, comes into the picture with his own desires, rules, and sinful requests? Will they be able to get on the same page, or will mistrust run rampant and ruin everybody’s chances at getting what they want?

Excerpt
Lincoln
Around four-thirty, about three hours after Marc left, I give him a call in his room. As much as he’s driving me fucking crazy, he’s also driving me crazy in a completely different way. I need to see if he still wants to go out tonight. I’ve talked to Thalia through sporadic text messages, and she seems to think she’ll be getting off later than she wanted to.
“Hello?” Marc’s voice filters through the phone.
“Marc, it’s Lincoln.”
“Hey, what’s up?”
“My fucking cock still,” I laugh.
His laughter joins mine. “That’s too bad.”
“Mmhmm. Anyway, I was just wondering if you wanted to go out tonight.”
“What do you have in mind?”
“I know a couple of bars around here.”
“Okay. Just let me know when to meet you downstairs. Nathalia won’t be off work until way later.”
“I know. She said she may be able to meet us later.”
“Well, great. When should I meet you in the lobby?”
“How does seven sound?”

“Sounds good.”
“Okay, see you then.”
“Yep. Bye, Lincoln.”
“Bye, Marc.”
Goddammit. What is about the way he says my name
that drives me fucking crazy? Seven o’clock won’t come soon enough.
I decide to text Nathalia once more.

Me: Hey, can you talk?

Thalia: Yeah, give me a minute.

A few minutes later my phone rings. “Hey,” I answer.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
“I didn’t interrupt anything important, did I?”
“No. I’m just making calls right now. I have to back to the conference room later. So, what’s going on? Tell me how your date with Marc went.”
The glee in her tone lets me know she’s already talked
to Marc.
“It wasn’t a date, for one. For two, Marc isn’t very nice.”
She bursts into laughter. “Marc is one of the nicest
guys I’ve met. What are you talking about?”
“He fucks my mind up!”
“How so?” she asks, still giggling.
“I know he wants me. He knows I want him. You know I can’t keep that shit to myself. So, when he decides to tease me and then not allow me to touch him or kiss him, it fucks me up.”
“I hear you teased him first. In the elevator?”
“That was nothing,” I scoff.
“All you have to do is say please. Maybe even a pretty please,” she says, snickering.
“I’m glad you find this amusing. My cock does not.”
“Aww. Your poor little cock.”
“My cock is anything but little.”
“Well, I wouldn’t know.”
“You know I’ll show you.”
“Yeah, but I only want to see if I can do something with it.”
“Exactly!” I exclaim. “Yet, Marc pulls his out in front
of me and I’m only allowed to look.”
“I’ve done plenty with his cock, but then again, I’m not opposed to begging.”
“You’re no help, you know that?”
“I can help you with your not-so-little problem,” she breathes huskily into the phone.
“Oh yeah?”
“Mmhhmm.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Anything you want me to.”
“I want you to play with yourself.”
“Right now?” she squeaks.
“Yes, right now. I want you to turn yourself on, but don’t come.”
“How does this help you?”
“Because you’ll feel the same way I do right now, and then you’ll help me convince Marc to give us both what we want. You can have his dick in your mouth while I eat your pussy until you come in my mouth. After that you can watch as I take Marc deep into my mouth.”
I hear her moan on the other end, and I can tell she’s
getting turned on just thinking about it.
“Are you touching yourself yet, Thalia?”

“Mmm, yes. Keep talking.”
“While I suck Marc’s thick cock into my mouth, you can straddle his face while he fucks you with his tongue. Once he’s brought you to the cusp of orgasm, he’ll lay you down and slide his dick into your dripping wet pussy. Once he’s made you come, we’ll switch positions again but this time you’ll watch as I lick Marc’s ass, getting him ready to feel me slide inside. Do you like that, Thalia?” I ask in a husky tone, getting turned on myself.
“Yes, Lincoln. I love it. I want to watch you two.
Mmm.”
“How wet are you?”
“So wet, Lincoln. I’m so wet.”
“Stop touching yourself.”
“Mmm,” she moans.
“Nathalia, stop!” I demand.
“Fuck, Linc. I’m so turned on right now.”
“I know. Welcome to the club. Will you help me tonight?”
“Yes,” she pants.
“Good girl. I’ll talk to you later. Marc and I will be out tonight, but you meet up with us when you can. Just text me and I’ll tell you where to go.”
“Okay. Fuck. I have to go freshen up. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome,” I say with a grin.

At seven o’clock, I’m in the lobby waiting for Marc to show up. I’ve put on a pair of navy-colored slacks, a light blue button up shirt with a navy blue blazer over it. A few minutes later as I’m sitting in one of the chairs, reading a magazine, I glance up and catch sight of Marc coming around the corner. He looks fantastic.

He’s wearing a white, long-sleeved shirt that’s snug around his muscles, and a grayish-blue vest, left open. His hair looks soft, like he just ran his hand through it and it stayed perfectly in place.
“Hey. Sorry if I kept you waiting.”
“No, it’s okay. I haven’t been here long.”
Standing up, I drop the magazine to the table and then we both head for the front doors.
“So, where we going?” he asks.
“To this place a couple blocks away. I figure we can take one of these cabs that’s out here.”
“Okay.”
The short cab ride is once again filled with this raw, sexual energy. We clearly can’t be alone in small places.
The cab pulls up in front of the lounge, the place encased in black brick, giving off an old-timey feel. The windows are crystal clear and you can see the patrons milling about on the inside. Some sitting to eat, others standing around with drinks in their hands.
“This looks nice,” Marc notes.
“Yeah, I figured we could eat here as well.”
Once inside, we find a small table in the corner and as soon as we sit down, a waitress is there ready to take our order.
“Evening, gentlemen. Can I get anything for you?”
Her dark brown eyes shift back and forth between Marc and myself, and the smile never leaves her face.
“I’ll take a Crown and Coke,” Marc answers with a smile.
“And I’ll have your best whiskey, neat, with some water, please.” I look to Marc. “Did you want some food? Seafood sampler or just some chips?”
“Let’s go with the sampler,” he says, speaking to the waitress.
“Okay, great. I’ll be back soon,” she chirps before turning and walking away, her curvaceous hips swaying back and forth.
Marc must have caught me watching her walk away. “See something you like?” he asks with a grin.
I look over the bulging muscles in his arms, and then back to his soft, perfect lips, and finally to his baby blue eyes. “Yes, I do.”
He lifts a single brow but doesn’t retort, to my disappointment. I decide to try to bait him.
“Did you think about me earlier today? You know, after you left me with a raging hard-on?”
“I may have thought about you, but not in the way you’re thinking.”
“And what way am I thinking?”
“You’re thinking I went back to the room and jacked off while thinking about you. I didn’t.”
“Because you’re so sure you’re going to get off with Thalia tonight?”
“Yes, I’m quite sure, actually,” he responds with a smirk.
“I wouldn’t be so sure if I were you.”
“Why’s that?” he asks, his brows pinching together.
“She wants you and me to be together as much as I do. As much as you do, even though you won’t admit it.
She wants to watch,” I say, my voice throaty and deep.
“Here we are,” the waitress announces, bringing us our order and killing the mood. “You guys okay over here?” she asks politely.
“Yes, I think we’re good for now. Thank you,” I say with a smile.
When she leaves, I pin my eyes on Marc and wait to see if he’s going to say anything in response to what I said.
A devious smile plays on his lips.
“You two can’t plot against me. I already know I can get Nathalia to give in to me. She won’t last long with this little plan you think you have. If I wanted to fuck her across this table, she’d let me, and you’d be the one left watching.”
“Why are you denying yourself the pleasure of being with me?” I ask with a cocky grin.
“It’s not about denying myself anything. It’s now about getting you to do something you say you don’t do. I’m confident I can get you to ask me for whatever it is you want, and now I have to follow that through. It’s not like I’m asking you to get on your hands and knees and beg.” He pauses and leans forward. “Unless you want to be on your knees.”
“So, now I’m denying us both, is that it?”
“Exactly,” he says, and then takes a drink. Leaning in closer to me he says, “Lincoln, do you want my cock in your mouth?” I lean forward, our faces getting closer. “Hmm?” he asks.
“Yes.” My voice comes out in a whisper.
His hand touches my knee under the table and goes up my thigh. “Do you want my mouth all over you?”
I close my eyes briefly as his fingers spread out over my thigh. My cock grows harder in my pants. When I open my eyes, his blue eyes look like they’ve darkened, and I know he’s turned on as well.
“I want it all, Marc.”
“Ask me for it,” he demands in a voice thick with lust.
“Sorry to interrupt,” the waitress voice breaks through, causing us to pull apart.
She looks embarrassed, her cheeks flushed red. “I’m sorry,” she repeats. “I just wanted to see if you needed a refill or anything.”
“We’re fine, thank you,” Marc replies politely, plastering a charming fucking smile on his face. Damn me for being jealous of the woman on the receiving side of it.
“You sure?” she asks with a smile.
“Yes, thank you, sweetheart,” Marc answers with a wink.
“Well, aren’t you the flirt?” I declare as soon as she’s out of ear shot.
“Jealous?” he asks with a lopsided grin.
I narrow my eyes at him and then go back to my food. He has no idea how close I came to asking him to give me everything he was saying to me. That perky waitress ruined it when she showed up. We eat in silence and then the waitress comes back to take the food and plates away. She doesn’t forget to smile and flirt with Marc while here. I don’t know why I’m feeling so pissed about that.
“How would Thalia feel if she knew you were flirting with the waitress tonight?”
“I think she would be fine with it. I’m just being polite, something you clearly aren’t good at doing.” He takes a drink and then looks right back at me. “I think you’re worried that the waitress probably has a better chance of sleeping with me tonight than you do.”
I huff. “You wouldn’t do that.”
He just shrugs. I know he’s just trying to fuck with my head, but dammit if it’s not working.
“You know the way to keep me here with you,” he says before catching the eye of the waitress and giving her another smile and wink. She ducks her head with a smile and heads to the bar. “I’ll be back.”
I watch him as he saunters towards the bar…and the waitress. I growl and run my hand through my hair as I watch him approach her. Taking a huge swallow of my whiskey, I adjust my body to get a better view of them.
She looks surprised to see him, and then he must say something, because she begins to laugh. Her hand lands on his shoulder and Marc looks back at me and winks. Turning his attention back to the waitress, he pulls his phone out and they both look down at it. Is he getting her number?
The waitress looks back at me, no smile visible on her face. She and Marc talk some more, and then they take a picture together with his phone. What the fuck is this? He stays facing me, but he’s messing with his phone and not noticing my angry demeanor. Maybe it’s jealous demeanor. Same thing.
He leans in and kisses her cheek before returning to the table.
“What the fuck was that?” I demand.
“What?” he feigns confusion.
“You know what I’m talking about. The laughing, flirting, exchanging numbers, and taking pictures. What’s that about? Are you seriously thinking of picking up a woman while you’re staying with another?” My body vibrates with anger.
“You can stop it from happening,” he says. “If you really want to.”
“I’m too pissed to want to ask you for anything,” I growl.
“Well, fine.”
He stands up and gestures to the waitress, who starts walking towards us. Marc meets her halfway, gives her money for our drinks and food and then whispers something in her ear. She giggles and looks at me briefly.
“Have a good night!” she calls to him.
I storm out into the night air and Marc is right behind me. Instead of standing in front of the building, waiting for a cab, he starts walking down the street.
“Hey! Where are you going?” I yell out.
He doesn’t answer. I quicken my pace and catch up to him, but he doesn’t even bother looking at me.
“I said, where are you going?”
“I’m going back to my room,” he grumbles. “I don’t need you to walk with me. I’m a big boy.”
This man is so frustrating!
“Are you going to let Thalia know that she doesn’t need to meet us anymore, or will you be too busy with the waitress?”
Marc turns quickly and faces me. His face is tense and angry. What the fuck does he have to be angry about? He looks around and then pulls me by my lapels to this dark alcove in a building that isn’t open. Pushing me up against the brick wall, he puts his face inches from mine.
“I’m not fucking the waitress. Nathalia knows where I am, and where I will be tonight. So, why don’t you stop acting like some sort of jealous boyfriend? You and Nathalia aren’t together, and never have been. You aren’t with me, and never will be. It shouldn’t matter to you who I am or am not planning on fucking tonight. It’s not going to be you.”
I don’t know if it’s his anger, his passion, the look in his eyes, or the way he pushed me against the wall, but my dick hardens and I want him more now than I think I ever have. A plan comes to me.
“You’re both right and wrong,” I say.
His brows furrow, and he looks even more annoyed. “What the fuck are you talking about?” he demands.
“You’re right, you won’t be fucking the waitress tonight, but you’re wrong about not fucking me. You will be,” I say as I pull his lower half into my own.
“No. I won’t,” he says through gritted teeth.
“You will,” I say with a smirk. “Marc,” I breathe, bringing our mouths closer together. “Kiss me.”
Our lips are a hair’s breadth away. I can tell he’s struggling with himself, but I choose to make it easier for him. I can’t do this anymore. I need him. I want him, and at this point I’ll do whatever’s necessary to make sure it happens.
“Please,” I pant out, my lips brushing against his as I speak the one word he’s been waiting to hear.
Without warning his mouth crushes against mine. His tongue parts my lips and delves deep into my mouth. Nothing about this kiss is soft and sweet, and I’m glad it’s not. I’m finding that I prefer him angry, forceful, and rough. He pins me to the wall with his hips, both of our dicks growing in length and thickness as they’re pushed together. My fingers run through his soft hair and pull. A hiss escapes his mouth and then his hand is on the side of my face, his fingers on the back of my head, and his thumb lying across my jawline. He pulls me closer to his mouth, and then sucks my bottom lip into his mouth and bites down.
A growl is ripped from my throat as I push back and have him up against the other side of the alcove. I
barricade him between my arms, but his hand comes up and pulls my hair hard enough to expose my neck to him. His tongue licks my heated flesh from my Adam’s apple to my ear. He gives me another small bite below my lobe, and it sends chills down my body.
Our mouths connect again, and I suck his tongue into my mouth, eliciting a groan from his throat. He pulls back, but just as quickly sticks his tongue back into my mouth, massaging my tongue with his. Marc places both hands on the sides of my face, making sure there’s no way I can get away from him. My hands go to his back, feeling every muscled ridge, and I pull him closer to my body.
We’re a mass of grunts, groans, and hisses. Our hands are never off of each other. We bite, suck, and lick each other’s necks, lips, and tongues. Anywhere Marc touches me sets me on fire. My cock throbs in my pants, ready to be freed.
This kiss tops any kiss I’ve ever had. I know without a doubt that messing with this man is going to ruin me. I’ve never anticipated being ruined until now.
He forces himself away from me and stares deep in my eyes.
“Tomorrow.”
There’s never been so much promise, possibilities, and hunger put into one word.
He turns on his heel and leaves.

Fighting Solitude

Prologue

“Mia!” I shouted.

It was worthless. She’d been deaf since the day I met her.

She’d never once heard my voice.

She’d never heard the deep rumble of my laugh when she was excited, signing so fast I could barely keep up.

She’d never heard my content sigh when she barged into the locker room after a fight—just her presence soothed the lingering madness brewing within me.

She’d never heard me whispering my deepest fears into her ear as she fell asleep on top of me.

She’d never heard the reverence in which I cried her name each and every time I took her body.

And she’d never once heard the ease in which the words I love you tumbled from my lips as I stared into her deep, jade green eyes.

But as I screamed her name while watching her petite body seizing in the passenger seat beside me, I’d never needed her to hear me more.

“Mia. Oh God. I’ve got you, baby.”

She was still thrashing violently as I made my way around to her door, yanking it open while pleading with whatever god was willing to help.

When she stilled, a whole new level of silence filled the air around us. It wasn’t the absence of sound.

It was the absence of life.

“Mia, breathe!” I roared as her chest remained agonizingly still. “Help me!” I screamed at the closed emergency room doors, but no medical savior rushed out with the miracle I so desperately needed.

My hands shook wildly as I released her lifeless body from the seatbelt.

“I’ve got you, just hang on. Please just hang on, Mia,” I whispered lifting her into my arms and sprinting through the sliding doors. “I need a doctor! She’s not breathing!”

Nurses rushed towards me in slow motion as the seconds without air in her lungs passed at a terrifying speed.

Breathe.

A doctor appeared with a gurney and quickly took her from my arms.

The immediate loss was staggering.

Hope became my only solace.

She needed help that I wasn’t capable of giving her, but that didn’t stop me from following close behind as they rolled her away. I was on the verge of self-destructing; letting her out of my sight wasn’t an option.

I stood motionless in the doorway while doctors and nurses swarmed around her. Their mouths moved frantically, but without my hearing aids I was worthless to make out the words their faint voices carried.

I never wore my hearing aids when I was with Mia. There was no point. She rarely spoke with her voice.

We’d spent four years building a relationship with our hands.

Those hands had told me animated stories that made me laugh until my face hurt from smiling.

They’d fought with me relentlessly, but always ended the night raking down my back in silent ecstasy.

Her fingers had fluidly signed I love you more times than I could ever count—or forget.

But as I felt the nurse attempting to physically remove me from the room, my eyes became fixated on her limp hand dangling off the side of the bed. It was the only sight more frightening than watching her flail mid-seizure.

It ripped the heart straight from my chest.

That hand was supposed to be full of life.

It was the very essence of Mia.

Pale.

White.

Still.

Oh God.

Sucking in a deep breath, I held it until the room began to spin.

It provided me no relief even as it forced me to my knees.

There would be no distraction from this.

I was going to lose her.

Yet another woman I couldn’t save.
