Synopsis

Our little family has been together for four years, and life has been good, considering my track record. But In the blink of an eye, my ease was suddenly gone when I heard his terrifying words. I knew from the look on Tango’s face and the way he avoided my gaze—all hell was about to break loose. Now it seems like the dangers I spent years desperately avoiding are starting to threaten my happily ever after.

Maybe it’s because I let my guard down. Or maybe it’s because I was starting to trust again. But I can’t even trust the people closest to me, and now I remember why.

Screw with me, that’s one thing. Screw with my family, and we’ve got a problem…

(This can be read as a standalone)

Review

Is it really strange that I enjoyed this novella slightly more than when I read TAG, the full length novel back at the beginning of the year. Maybe it was because the characters have been established and we know they already had their happily ever after so we get to skip the ‘getting to know you’ bit, or maybe it was because there was so much action, suspense and intrigue shovelled by the chapter load into this book, whatever it was I loved it.

You’re It picks up with Tango and Cali happily married and living in seclusion with their beautiful daughter Tyler but when some murky characters emerge from the past right into their present things get very complicated and it’s up to Tango to put those demons to rest once and for all.

‘I led Cali to believe I wasn’t dying for almost an entire month, but it’s been four years with her, and if I blink the wrong way, that girl knows when I’m lying. And she isn’t one of those girls that’ll take “I don’t want to talk about it right now” as an excuse. Cali, all five feet one hundred pounds of her, will push me up against a wall, because I’ll let her, and hold me there with her blazing blue eyes and stare up at me until I cave and tell her every little thing I had no intention of telling her.

Which is exactly why I’m still madly in love with this girl.’

I love that Tango’s bravery and chivalry is still paramount to his character but at the same time he comprehends his wife is a strong and determined woman who is going to want to fight alongside him, especially when it comes to protecting their little family. You’re It (great name to follow on from TAG!) is a terrific little book, Shari is clever at making her characters shine while being able to keep the reader highly motivated to get to the end with a action packed conspiracy and a host of bad guys for the heroes to get through.

Synopsis

I had an affair. The most forbidden and seductive affair, and fell in Love.

He was a rare gentleman, intelligent and gorgeous; a man every woman desired. Every cell in my body was telling me that he was my happily ever after.

I was stuck in a marriage of mediocrity, I ached for red silk romance and carry me away passion, but not with my husband. I craved Him.

Living without him was cruel and unusual punishment, even for my wandering heart.

Affairytale is a tantalizing memoir of sultry encounters, hidden grottos and secret hillside cabins. From the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes to the Southern shores of Maui you’ll fall in love with this tell-all memoir that pulls back the veil on infidelity and gives you rare look into hearts and bedroom of a real life extramarital affair.

Woven with original love letters and scandalous text messages, this engrossing true love story is sure to break then win your heart.

True Love always finds a way.
Sometimes…it starts with an affair.

Review

C.J. has always known that Levi wasn’t the love of her life. But he was there, he was stable and he was what she has known since they first started dating as teenagers. But as life goes on and their relationship becomes bitter and angry deposits a child and a marriage C.J. begins to doubt it all. Especially when the handsome stranger Grant becomes not such a stranger anymore, showing up at family holidays and nights out, Grant soon becomes a friend, a good friend…and then someone C.J. wants more than friendship with, someone she can’t stop thinking about.

“Loneliness tucked me in with a thin red blanket and offered me its cold shoulder in the place where his should have been. Emotionally exhausted and on the brink of a meltdown, I was a felony disaster.”

This is a story for a reader who loves plots that contain affairs and forbidden romances that occur because the leads are in relationships. This was my first read of a book based around an affair and unfortunately, I discovered I don’t love this type of novel. However, I could not fault the writing or the emotions this story stirred up in me.

“Then I turned to him to say a final goodbye. With tears in my eyes I said, “I wish we could have been together in a different lifetime, I have a feeling we would have been really amazing. You are the most incredible man I’ve ever known and I meant everything I’ve said. Goodbye.”

What I loved; the writing was nearly faultless, it flowed throughout and the story was easy to follow. And I believe any sign of a good writer is one that can site up strong emotions and that was certainly the with this story; as it is a story about an affair it is no surprise that a strong emotion I felt was anger and sadness. I felt sad for everyone involved but also anger with Levi for being aggressive and C.J. for having the affair and being quite heartless. It was a long story, one where you could get emotionally invested with the characters and interested by the plot line.

“He was intoxicating, more than I’d imagined he would be, and in such a different way. My physical body was drunk on him of course, but the invisible union of our souls felt like destiny, like we’d been meant for each other since the beginning of time.”

Things I didn’t like; unfortunately I really didn’t like C.J, I thought although Levi was not a nice man, C.J. was heartless, cold and quite unfeeling over the whole thing. I got the impression Levi was the way he was because C.J. has treated him in quite a clinical and cold way throughout their relationship. And although I had no issues with Grant, he wasn’t such an amazing male lead where I would be able to justify C.J. having the affair. Although the plot was interesting, the affair plot to me was a bit too depressing and angry and I didn’t feel many other emotions such as happiness, or relief so for me it was a bit too intense with not much to break it up.

“It’s just always been you. I can’t resist you any longer, I’ve tried.”

I would definitely recommend this to those who love affair reads; it was really well written, had a developed plot which allowed you to get really invested and it will definitely stir up strong emotions!

A DESPERATE MAN

Volume Three

Ella Frank Brooke Blaine

Sex. Addiction. Lies.

One night changed everything.

With the sins that stand between Evan and Reagan, can a relationship emerge from a past that is so broken?

Or will the weight of their deceptions crush any hope of redemption?

9

Excerpt

“SO LET ME get this straight.” Dr. Glover lifted the end of his pen to his lips as his eyes narrowed on Evan over the top of his glasses. “The woman we’ve been discussing over the past few weeks finally shows you that she wants more, and you left her in an emotional heap in her office. Did I get that right?”

Evan stretched his long legs out in front of him. She thinks I fucked a prostitute the day after I left her apartment, so, yeah, that’s about right. Sighing, he leaned back into the worn leather couch. “You left out the part about her being a liar. And not someone I met in the last few weeks. She had an agenda.”

“So did you.”

“And what the hell was that?”

“You wanted to fuck her.”

“Jesus, you get right to the point, don’t you?”

“Well, that’s what you do. Isn’t it?”

I thought it was until I became obsessed with a leggy fucking blonde. Evan glared at the man whose eyes he swore fucking twinkled. “Even if it is, what therapist talks like you do? I’m positive they don’t teach you that in Patient-Client Relations 101.”

“I’ve always been a firm believer in no bullshit. I told you that the day you walked in and tried to lie to me. We aren’t going to make any progress if you don’t trust me and I don’t trust you.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re just—”

“Yes, Evan?”

Evan waved him off. “Nothing. I guess I’m still trying to process the fact that Reagan is that little girl from so long ago. A whole fucking life ago. It’s… I don’t know,” he said, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “It’s disconcerting. She knew me before.”

“And that bothers you.”

“Fuck yes, it bothers me. I was ten years old the last time I saw her. Innocent. And now I’m…this.”

“You’re awfully hard on yourself. I wonder if you’re upset over what you’re saying or over Reagan thinking bad of you.”

And there it was. The truth he didn’t want to admit. Reagan accusing him of being with anyone hours after he’d been with her had infuriated him. Which was ridiculous, because he knew what he was. The demons he’d been trying to fight. Why would she assume anything but the worst? But with that anger came embarrassment and shame. He hated that she’d seen him on that corner. Hated that she’d seen him with Layla. But how the fuck could he ever convince her otherwise? And why would he even want to?

“She’s a liar,” he said.

“And you’re a sex addict. Fantastic pairing.”

About Brooke

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

Flash Point is her debut solo novel, and she is the co-author of the erotic serial, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released on November 11, 2015.

Author: Shanora Williams
Genre: Contemp/Dark Romance
Release Date: September 11, 2015
Dear Mr. Black,
I know you were hurting. I heard your cries. I wished over and over again that I could make it better, but as you stated I was too inexperienced; too good for someone as bad as you.

Perhaps you were right, but it didn’t matter because what I did know was that I loved the way you felt—loved the way you smelled. I loved how hard you got for me, and when you called me your Little Knight.

I can still remember that day in the park, when you held me close and kissed me deep. How you effortlessly made me cry your name on top of sweet smelling grass, making me feel like the only girl in the world. I loved how you looked at me, how you spoke to me.

I ‘d been madly in love with you ever since I was twelve years old, but I shouldn’t have been.

Isabelle would have hated it—my best friend. I couldn’t afford to lose her. Besides, you two had already lost enough. Losing Mrs. Black was the epitome.
It’s Chloe Knight.

I wanted to be there for you no matter what, but Isabelle needed me too.

And she would have hated me if she ever found out I was sleeping with her father.

** Tainted Black is a forbidden love-story about a girl who helplessly falls for her best friend’s father. After a tragic accident ends the life of Theo Black’s wife, he turns to the one person he has always found interesting.

Chloe Knight, the girl from across the street, his daughter’s best friend, and a person that is considered completely off limits for him. **

Check out our 5 smooches review HERE.

I looked down at the person’s name that flashed on my screen. Mr. Black. Surprised, my heart caught speed, and I answered, my voice soft. “Mr. Black?”
“Hey Chloe.”
“Everything okay?”
“I don’t know,” he said, voice low. “You tell me.”
“What do you mean?”
“You just gonna stay in your room and watch me, or are you gonna come over and actually talk to me?”
I huffed a laugh, looking up, heat bombarding my cheeks. Being embarrassed would have been an understatement. “I’m—I don’t know what you mean.”
“Turn on your lamp,” he demanded.
“Why?”
“I want to see you.”
I looked towards my lamp, hesitating. He was quiet, waiting for me to follow through. I blew a breath, going for my lamp. Then I met at the window again, and he was still there. His expression had changed though. He was smiling now. It was gentle. Sweet.
“Damn. Is there ever a time you don’t look good?”
“Please,” I laughed, tugging on the hem of my tank. It was then that I realized I had no bra on. I covered my chest with my arm.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Cover up. Just stand there… let me look at you.”
Slowly dropping my hand, I stared ahead, allowing Mr. Black to get an eye-full. I was in my most natural state—hair up in a bun, shorts low, revealing too much leg, and sporting a white camisole that exposed firm, brown nipples.
“What are we doing?” I asked, voice barely heard.
He was quiet for a moment, his face serious now. “Picking up where we left off.”

Review

It’s been exactly eighteen hours since I sat dumbfounded, emotionally wrecked and in complete awe as I read those dreaded words ‘the end’. I can also tell you it has been a number of months since a book has touched me so uniquely, heart and soul but even longer since a book has become so imprinted on my memory and heart and soul and caused me to stare off into an abyss of contemplation and wonder.

Tainted Black is as dark and desolate as it is tragically beautiful and romantic. There is this sense of utter melancholy and little-boy-lost that clings to Theo Black, he’s suffered through devastation, death, guilt and regret and somehow the one person that shouldn’t be able to lure him out of his self-hatred and destruction is the very girl that knows him to his very core and is the one girl that keeps the momentum of guilt and regret on a constant cycle as they journey on one of the hottest most seductive love affairs I have ever experienced.

‘“God, you have no idea how beautiful you are, do you?” My heart pounded. I couldn’t speak. I didn’t need to.

“I know you like me, Chloe.”

“Mr. Black, I-”

“Theo…please,” he begged, eyes shutting briefly before opening again, “…just call me Theo. Call me by my first name. It sounds so good coming out of your mouth.”’

What begins as an illicit affair between nineteen year old Chloe and thirty-eight-year-old Theo- one brought about by tragedy and regret-soon transforms into something deeper and more profound than Theo ever wanted or could have hoped for and indeed more than Chloe had imagined in her youthful fantasies about her BFF’s gorgeous tattooed motorcycle riding dad. Theo is a phenomenal character.

Taking it from Chloe’s POV he is the perfect older man. He really listens and gives terrific advice. He is incredibly sexy and has a voice that could tempt a nun but above all else he truly loves his wife. Loyal and romantic and faithful until the very end, Theo is perfection personified. However as a reader we get the bonus of seeing inside Theo’s head to realise how deeply flawed and jagged he is-a beautiful disaster waiting to happen. We witness how messed up and confused he feels, how he simply wants to numb all of his hurt and longing and how he seemingly uses the vulnerable and naive Chloe to accomplish this, but through Shanora’s fantastic character development and wonderfully written dual points of view the reader gets a wider scope of what to an outsider seems like a one-sided seduction. I can’t begin to explain how terrific Tainted Black was. There was no huge dramatic storyline that took up the whole of the book, it was simply a steamy, scintillating and devastating romance that progressed through the years and managed to captivate my attention and my imagination in equal measures as various lives connected and intersected in unimaginable ways, with tragic consequences. The writing flows so easily, giving this remarkable and slightly taboo story of sex, guilt, redemption, absolution and love a chance to shine. It’s a fabulously unique love story with an ending that left me in serious thought after. It was a marvellous ending to a sterling piece of writing by an incredibly talented author, it just fit perfectly with the flow and maturity level of the whole book.

What is your name?
Sean Taiden
How do you dress most of
the time?
Casual. Jeans. Cargos. Anything comfortable and usually
something to show off my guns in the warmer weather.
What do you wear when you
go to sleep?
Not much.
Where do you live?
My penthouse apartment in Richmond, Virginia is my favorite
place. It’s clean and stylish…because I pay people to make sure it stays that
way.
What one word best
describes you?
Shadow
What is your favorite
memory from adolescence?
My first live gig. I was caught between pissing my pants and
snorting vomit out of my nose. It was only at a local bar and I was underage.
What do you watch on the
Television?
The music channels but I always switch off the gossip segments.
They’re always full of shit.
What annoys you more than
anything else?
Mason Lynch.
What’s your favorite

Probably a Koala. While we were touring Australia I got up close

high on eucalyptus. Did you know they can give you chlamydia?… Ahh… that’s
just a fun fact… Not something I learned from the up close and personal
experience. Next question??
Do you have any pets?
Touring life doesn’t really allow for it. But I’ve always wanted
a dog. A big one.
What do you find most
relaxing
?
A beer and a movie. Or a beer and… pretty much anything.
What was the wildest thing
you’ve ever done, sexually?
There’s a sex tape roaming the internet at the moment. It may
not be the wildest thing I’ve done but it sure was the stupidest.
Is there any sexual
activity that you enjoy and/or practice regularly that can be considered
non-standard?
I like a little pain with my pleasure. I wouldn’t say I’m
heavily into any type of kink but I’m not against any either.

Title: The End Game

Author: Kate McCarthy

 Release Date: September 8, 2015

Blurb

“Professional athletes are

pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys

and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively

represents their community.”

The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone

fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that

better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football,

spiraled into scandal and shame.

But being a hero is easier said then done.

Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden

fail. I craved nothing except being the best—willing to do anything to prove

them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me.

“At the time of going to print,

Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment.”

I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An

Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer

sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a

chip on his shoulder.

But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving

fire to succeed isn’t made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and

the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn’t there when he needed me most.

This is a story about love and a game that takes

everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure

makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where

two people’s end game will change everything.

Excerpt

Shutting the door, I walk up the slight incline behind Brody. He sits down at the top of the crest and pats the grassy spot beside him.

“You didn’t mention this part when you explained our date.”

“I can’t give away all my secrets now, can I?”

The grass is a thick blanket on the ground and when I stretch out flat, the rich, earthy scent of soil sweeps over me. My eyes lift to the sky and that’s when I get it. It’s perfectly clear and millions of stars are scattered diamonds twinkling above us—bright and magical.

“Besides,” Brody adds as he lies down beside me and sweeps out his arm, encompassing all of it. “How do you explain that?”

He’s right. You can’t. “It’s beautiful.”

“Is this what the stars are like for you back home?”

“No. Back home it’s different.”

“Different how?”

Homesickness swamps me. As beautiful as Texas is, it’s not Australia. Somehow the stars are always brighter where you belong. “Because there’s no place like home.”

“You’re wrong.”

I turn my head and stare at Brody. He’s not looking at me. His head is tilted toward the sky, eyes riveted on the beauty above him. My gaze follows the line of his profile. From the curl of his hair to the perfect line of his nose, down to the mouth I want kissing me right this very instant.

“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.” His hand nudges my own. An invitation. I twine my fingers with his and he squeezes them lightly. “Whether it’s where you are, like the football field, or who you’re with.” Brody turns his head, looking at me when he says that. It’s comforting because it unites us somehow, like it’s slowly becoming us against the world. “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”

My breath hitches from the beautiful simplicity of his words. Before I can talk myself out of it, I roll over and straddle him. My knees hug his hips, and he stares up at me from my seated position. My pulse pounds a heavy beat in the silence. Thump, thump, thump. It’s so loud in my ears I’m sure he can hear it.

“Show me,” I breathe. A gleam lights his dark eyes, and he sucks his lower lip inside his mouth. He knows what I’m asking, but I spell it out anyway. “Show me one of those wicked things.”

In a move that steals the air from my lungs, he takes both my hands and pulls me down against the broad width of his chest. I’m rolled over and underneath him before I can blink. The squirm in my hips is instinctive, the ache between my thighs relentless.

“Careful what you ask for,” Brody says roughly, every exquisite inch of his body pressing down on mine.

“Why?”

His lips curve. “Because when I give it to you, it won’t be enough.”

My fingers trail down the side of his face, grazing the firm jaw, cupping his cheek in my palm. Foreboding swamps me. I’m falling hard into uncharted territory, and all I see is a broken mess at the end. How is this going to end well for either of us?

“You’re an arrogant man, Brody Madden,” I whisper.

He brings his face to mine, so close I see the brilliant gold in his eyes, like flecks of light in the dark. “And you, Jordan Elliott, will be the woman who brings me to my knees,” he whispers against my lips.

“Show me,” I beg on a shaky breath.

Brody’s lashes lower and he presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth. I tilt my chin upwards, inviting more. Rather than take my lips like I ache for him to do, he shifts sideways and begins nipping at my jaw. His breath is a rasp when he reaches my earlobe, taking it between his teeth. A sharp pinch from his bite forces a whimper from my throat.

“More?” he asks, drawing back to look at me.

“Is that even a real question?”

Brody chuckles as I slide my hand up and around his nape, dragging his mouth down to mine. He groans and kisses me gently, once, and then twice.

“Brody,” I whisper, and he kisses me again, forcing my mouth open hard like he can’t hold himself in check anymore. My hair is loose and he fists chunks of it in both hands while his tongue rubs against mine, hot and aggressive. It’s almost too much, and when I jerk away I’m left gasping.

Brody doesn’t pause. He ducks his head to my neck, his tongue tasting its way down. He finds my pulse point and sucks. It’s fierce and my back arches involuntarily. His mouth shifts further down, moving on before he leaves a mark.

Sitting up, he takes the neckline of my dress in both hands. Five dainty buttons hold it together. A single wrench will rip the flimsy fabric in two. He pauses and looks at me, inhaling raggedly. “Jordan … I don’t want to ruin it.”

My brow furrows. I glance to the hands poised on my dress. They’re tense, veins straining under his skin. My head is lost in a fog when my gaze returns to his face. “Ruin my dress?”

Brody groans, a deep sound of regret and frustration. “Us.”

“You don’t want to ruin us?”

He draws his hands away from the neckline of my dress. “No.”

“How would you do that?”

“I don’t know. I just get this feeling I’m going to.” He shifts away, moving off me and rolling to his back. I turn my head. Brody’s gaze is back on the stars. I watch his throat work as he swallows, the pulse in his neck pounding visibly. “All I’ve ever wanted is to be the best. Whatever it takes. I’ll do anything. That’s how I’ll ruin us, Jordan. How can something so sweet survive a sentiment so dark?”

I roll to my side, holding my head in my hand. Cupping his face with the other, I nudge gently until he’s looking at me. “I won’t let you.”

Brody’s voice is urgent, his eyes fierce. “Promise me.”

I can’t shake the apprehension. It’s set in my bones and when I speak it feels like a lie. “I promise.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Excerpt

Prologue

Jensen

I don’t take ownership in a lot of things. I rent an apartment, lease a car, and go to a no-contract gym. I have a wandering heart—an incessant mind. It’s hard for me to look at something and see forever; though I had a forever once.

I let her go, not because I loved her too much to ask her to stay, but because I couldn’t bear to hear her tell me she wouldn’t. Still, every once in a while I wonder.

And nothing is more haunting than regret.

Chapter 1

Mia

I used to wonder what I would do if I had the chance to go back in time and right something. Would I take it? Would I look at it as a second opportunity, or would I just let it go, knowing the experiences I went through and learned from?

Discomfort spread through me as I walked into the building of my new, albeit temporary, job. The feeling stayed there, stuck to the lining inside of my uneasy stomach, echoing its way into my mind until I reached the twentieth floor of the building. As I exited the elevator and stepped into the lobby of the magazine, a smiling brunette, who was sorting through a colorful cup of pens, greeted me. Something about her—maybe her fidgetiness, the Lisa Loeb look she had going, or the welcoming smile on her face—made me breathe a little easier.

“How can I help you?” she asked in a singsong voice as she swiveled slightly in her chair.

“I’m here to see Mrs.—I mean, Dr. Zamora.”

“Fran,” she said. “She likes to be called Fran. Are you Mia?”

“Yes.”

The girl smiled and gave me a quick onceover. “Cool. I’m Katie. Let me make sure she’s in. Take a seat.”

I let out a breath as I placed my bag on the floor and sat across from her in a sleek white chair, taking in the vast space filled with photographs shot by people whose work I admired. In an effort to calm my nerves, I picked up one of the magazines beside me and leafed through it, and even went as far as to try to channel my inner zen, remembering what an incredible yoga session I’d had earlier that morning. But nothing worked. That sticky feeling of what did I get myself into? could not be soothed.

It felt like the time I let my twin brother talk me into letting him cut my hair so that we could “really be twins,” and I ended up looking like Peter Pan for two months while my mother cried into her pillow every night. I fished out my phone and contemplated sending him a text. Rob had always been the brave twin, with words of wisdom to get me through these times. But, I’d dug my grave, and now I had to lie in it.

When I ran into my favorite college professor months ago, a local magazine had just published some of my pictures for a special they were circulating. The accomplishment I felt at telling her this dwindled when she asked the dreaded words: what next? But then she offered me the opportunity of a lifetime: to take pictures for a huge magazine, one I probably wouldn’t have had an opportunity to work for had my professor’s sister not been the person in charge of the project. The catch, of course, unbeknownst to my professor or her sister, was that my exboyfriend, The Dream Crusher, wrote for the same magazine. But I’d have been an idiot to turn it down. Regardless of where I worked after this, to have this experience on my resume would be incredible.

“She just got here,” Katie said, jerking me out of my thoughts. I stood quickly, hitching my bag on my shoulder as the glass door to my right opened and a tall woman with an uncanny resemblance to my professor—wild red hair and bright green eyes—walked through it.

I laughed when she winked at me. After she hired me for this job, we started following each other on any social media that allowed for stalking.

“It’s like we’ve been friends forever.”

“Social media will do that,” she responded with a laugh as she turned on her heels. “Let me show you around.”

If Fran were a car, she’d be in fourth gear at all times. By the time she finished showing me around the place and we got back to her office, my legs felt like they were on fire. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the heels I was wearing, or because I had to take four strides to her two. Being short could be a bit of a curse.

“We already got the clearance from W Magazine and are keeping the title ‘What Would You Do With Your Second Chance?’ I’m sure they told you already,” she said as we each took a seat.

They hadn’t told me anything. Not that it mattered. I’d taken pictures for an article with a similar name, but it was for a small, local magazine, nothing of this stature.

“I hope your friends don’t mind that we’re stealing their limelight,” Fran added with a smile. She’d become completely fascinated by the fact that the couple on the cover of the magazine, my best friend and her now-husband, were a second chance love story.

“They definitely don’t mind,” I replied with a laugh. “They wanted to kill me when they saw the magazine in our grocery stores, so replacing it will be a good thing.

” She laughed. “Were they uneasy because they weren’t an official couple yet?”

“Basically. Her brother wanted to kill Oliver … the guy,” I paused to clarify before continuing, “when he found out about the whole thing.”

“But it’s so romantic,” Fran said, letting out a deep sigh.

“I guess it is.”

“Oh, don’t tell me you’re one of those girls!”

“One of what girls?”

“The ones who are all ‘I don’t need a man’ and ‘I hate romance.’” She rolled her eyes, but I could tell she was biting back a smile as she said it.

I shrugged. “I’m not any kind of girl. I don’t need a man, but I don’t hate romance. I think I’m kind of obsessed with romance, really, which is probably why I’m still single.”

Fran laughed loudly. “Funny how that works, right? I’ll tell you what, had it not been for Match, I would have never met mine. I’m sure you don’t need any help finding a guy, though.” She waved the length of my torso as if she was presenting me to someone as some kind of trophy.

“Finding a guy isn’t a problem. Keeping a guy is a problem, and finding the guy is a complete catastrophe.”

Fran nodded in sympathy. “Yep. I’ve been there. But alas, you’ll find the one. You’re young, adorable, funny, talented, and smart. Hell of a combination.”

I smiled and looked away. “One day.”

“Anywho, enough about boys. Let’s talk about work. As I stated in the email, you’ll be taking your headshots today. You don’t need to come into the office every day, but feel free to use our facility for anything you need. I sent you the contact information for the couples you’ll be shooting so that you can schedule their test shots first, and after that, we’ll let you know who we narrowed it down to. We only want to select four couples to feature: two young, and two older. They all have different stories, anyway, so that’ll be fine.”

She paused for a breath as I nodded, taking mental notes. “And … oh yeah, here are the names of the writers working on the special. Carlos and Deborah are regular staff; the other two are freelance, but work with us often. I wrote down their emails and will send them yours now so they can contact you. Sometimes they like to go along for the shoots and do their interviews there.”

My eyes scrolled down the list as I nodded. I stalled when I saw his name. Just words on a page, but they made my heart flip once, twice, and finally nestle its way into the pit of my stomach. I was prepared for this.

“You should meet us for drinks on Wednesday,” Fran said, pulling me out of my thoughts. I was so not prepared for this.

“So I only see them on days that I shoot?” I asked, waving the paper slightly.

“Well, that only happens if they want to interview the people in their element. Otherwise, we only see each other during meetings, and we don’t have many. We’ll be having one this Wednesday over drinks, though, and then again to lay out the final plans.”

I swallowed loudly and nodded. “Okay.”

“It would be great for you to come on Wednesday and meet them,” she said again. I felt like I was on a downward spiral, moving here, knowing this job would mean I would be insanely close to him, secretly hoping that I was, while reminding myself of the reasons I’d avoided him in the first place. I took a breath and braced myself for the inevitable fall.

“Sure. Drinks sound great.”

Review

‘We were just Mia and Jensen – flawed, crazy, and disastrously attracted to each other.’

Wow, just freaking wow.  I knew that I was going to really love this book because I SO enjoyed Kaleidoscope Hearts but I think that I liked Jensen and Mia’s story even more.  It was just so full of emotion and angst and regret. Paper Hearts is a fabulous second chance romance.

If it’s already broken, why are you so afraid of it?”

“Because I don’t know if I want to walk on all that shattered glass again.”

So, there is a little novella before you read Paper Hearts, called Torn Hearts and it is free and I must insist that you read it before Paper Hearts.  It is just a short thirty minute read but it will give you some background on Mia and Jensen and what ultimately led to the end of their relationship the first time around.  It was a five star read for me and while you probably could get away without reading it, don’t.  Just trust me.  It is fantastic and it made me really fall in love with both Mia and Jensen and understand the decisions that they make in Paper Hearts.

So, this book was just a really hard read for me.  I constantly found myself tearing up while reading.  I would have to put the book down and come back because I often found myself a little overwhelmed with emotion and I think that I felt that way because it is obvious that Jensen and Mia have such love for each other but that simply had no bearing on why they had to be apart and the decisions they made.  It just was.  And that made me so sad because sometimes love just isn’t enough.  Oh God, it was hard.

“This doesn’t mean anything,”

“This means everything,”

But the story really it just fabulous.  The pacing of the story moved along quite nicely and I found myself turning the pages quickly waiting for these two to meet up again or text again or finally kiss again.  I felt so torn because both Jensen and Mia make such huge mistakes and I completely understand why.  They are mistakes that I very well would have made myself so I felt such empathy for both of them.  It is so difficult to read a story where you don’t really get to pick a side because you sympathize and love both characters so equally.  And the writing was just so damn incredible.  I really do need to go back and read the rest of Claire’s books because her writing style is phenomenal.  It is kind of poetic and lyrical and sexy.  I really adore it.

Maybe our souls really are scattered in the things we love, and we are all completely lost, but from the moment she looked at me, I felt like I’d been found.

I found that Jensen’s excerpts were some of my favorite parts of this book and I think that is because he is just so romantic and so very honest and blunt about his feelings.  It made me love him even more.  His bits were funny and refreshing and sweet.

As you can tell, this book totally rocked my world and I absolutely cannot wait for more from this author.  Her books are just so darn romantic in the very truest sense.  They are all angsty and swoony and gooey just how I like ’em!

“Real love stories never end.”
