Synopsis

I married the right brother.

At least that’s what I tell myself at night, when I stare at the ceiling and listen to the rhythm of the grandfather clock down the hall. It never feels like the mere passage of time, but a countdown towards something inevitable.

Bobby Lightly is selfish, irresponsible, and careless. I haven’t seen him since the day I married his brother. He slipped out during the wedding reception without a word.

A year later, I heard Bobby was drafted to Korea. He never said goodbye to anyone. Never sent a letter. We had all come to terms with the fact that he was probably dead somewhere, either a victim of the war or its aftermath.

That is, until in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, he showed up at the doorstep of the house I lived in with his brother.

Everyone thinks I’m cruel. Everyone thinks I should be easy on him. They think I don’t understand him. They all think I hate him.

But what no one understands is that it was Bobby who broke my heart.

And I think he’s back to do it again.

Excerpt

“What do you want me to do?” I yelled frustratedly. “Pack my bags and go to India? Life’s not that easy. We’re not all you. We don’t all just walk away from our responsibilities.” I immediately regretted those last words, recalling the scar on his shoulder. There were some responsibilities Bobby faced when others would have run.

“It’s not about what I want you to do, Lil. What do you want?”

What I wanted was no longer relevant. It was too late for what I wanted.

“You keep taking that shit and one day you are going to wake up and realize you slept your whole life away. There may be people who need that, but you are not one of them. Let yourself feel it all. The good. The bad. The fucking great. Don’t imprison yourself.”

I knew he was right, but I had grown comfortable in the numbness. Yet there was something luxurious about the pain I felt upon Bobby’s return. It was rich and textured. I could feel it in my bones and my chest and on my skin. I could taste it. I could feel again. And feeling the pain also gave me room to feel alive.

“If you keep doing this, how are you any different than Rory? We want to get him better, right? Well the changes start with us. I’m back and trust me, that wasn’t easy for me. And now you’ve gotta bring yourself back.”

I swallowed sharply, preparing myself to say goodbye to my dear friend. A friend who had always been there. More than my sister, or mother, or Barbie could be. It understood my fears, my insecurities, the things I had sacrificed. It knew my secrets. I never had to explain myself to it. It never judged.

“Fine,” I surrendered. But I clutched the bottle tighter in my hands than ever before.

Bobby’s body language relaxed as he glanced over to me and opened his palm. “Gimme.”

“What? Now you want ‘em?”

“Don’t be an ass, Lil.”

I sneered at Bobby, slamming the bottle in his palm. The pills tried to seduce me one last time as I heard them dance in their container.

Synopsis

Firefighter Gage Simpson has it all: the job of his dreams, the family of his heart, and no shortage of hot guys lining up to share his bed. “Fun and easy” is his motto—and it’s kept him sunny through a painful upbringing and steered him away from trouble. But when trouble comes knocking in the form of a sexy, scarred, tattooed chef with a harrowing past and zero communication skills, Gage can’t help but be drawn to the flame.

Brady Smith isn’t fun. And easy isn’t in his vocabulary. When cocky Gage swaggers into his restaurant kitchen, the former Marine-turned-five-star-chef is blindsided by the firefighter’s beauty. Then confused that this golden guy with the sparkling blue eyes and the body of a god might be interested in him. As desire flares and temperatures rise, Gage and Brady will have to figure out if the heat between them is just a temporary flash—or the beginning of something real.

Review

“The things I want to do to you, Brady. The filthy beautiful things.”

Since I first read Flirting With Fire and got a taste of Brady and Gage I have been salivating thinking of the day I would get to have more of this sexy damaged duo. Melting Point is a standalone and very enjoyable all on it’s own but in my experience if you pair it with Flirting With Fire, in which you get to see the start of their relationship unfold, you get a complex and wonderful story.

On the outside Gage appears to have the perfect playboy life, but everyone has a past full of doubts and regrets and while now he is a confident out and proud firefighter he was once a broken foster kid. Brady shows his damage on his sleeve. Bruiting and dark he lets no one close and doesn’t hide the fact that he hates to be touched and must remain in control. A perfect mismatched pair they push and pull each other to a breaking point with Brady unyielding on his need for control and distance. But you can’t help who you fall for and some loves are just worth the uncomfortable compromise that comes with getting out of your comfort zone.

‘Brady knew Gage would have to eventually leave his body, his life – this fantasy was like a fever dream Brady would eventually wake from – but the heat of the present kept the cold future at bay.’

As sexy and HOT as it is heartwarming and sweet. Gage’s devotion to the man who had more to overcome than most of us could bare in a lifetime had me melting for him and his struggles. Together these two have explosive chemistry and you will not regret giving their story a chance and now I absolutely cannot wait to start Playing With Fire.

Synopsis

A new adult romance from Entangled’s Embrace imprint…

Sometimes all a girl needs is a little practice…

It’s been twelve months, three days, and eleven hours since accounting student Scarlett Logan made it past a second date. A pitcher of mojitos in hand, she employs her supreme graphing skills to narrow things down to one horrifying explanation. Kissing. Clearly someone needs to teach her how to kiss properly. Like, say, her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie. He’s safe, he’s convenient, and yeah, maybe just a little gorgeous.

Finn knows exactly why Scarlett’s boyfriends are disappearing quickly. Him. Not a single guy she’s brought home is nearly good enough. And he’ll be damned if he lets some loser give her “kissing lessons.” No. He’ll do the honors, thank you very much. The moment their lips touch, though, everything turns upside down. But Scarlett deserves the one thing Finn can’t give her. And if he doesn’t put an end to the sexy little shenanigans, he’ll teach Scarlett the hardest lesson of all…heartbreak.

Review

There were a few things that excited me about this book.  I saw the blurb and I was like hell yes!  I love a friends to lovers romance.  And Finn and Scarlett are definitely best friends.  They share everything, go everywhere together, and are each other’s support system in ever way.  Add in the simple complication that they are roommates and I am even more sold.

So, Scarlett has been having a bit of a second date drought.  She cannot seem to get guys to take her on more than one date and she determines that it must be her kissing skills.  So Finn and Scarlett decide to have a little kissing lesson, with each other.  EEEP!

“You gave me a kissing lesson for Christ’s sake.”

And boy does this complicate things.  These kissing lessons reveal their attraction to each other which in equal parts terrifies and elates these characters.  They do not want to ruin this meaningful friendship that they have so they decide not to take things any further even if they are dying too!

“We won’t.  Even if you kiss me again like your life depended on it.  Even if I’m so turned on right now that I’m trembling.”

Yes, so the sexual tension between these characters was through the roof.  It was pretty smoking hot and the kissing lessons were like whoa!  Whew!  But also, these characters were each others support system and they really NEEDED one another.  This had me rooting for them to pull through and realize their TRUE feelings.

I have never had the pleasure of reading Rachel Bailey before and I’m so glad that I gave her a chance.  The writing was fantastic and the story was told in dual point of view.  This happens to be one of my favorite writing styles!  The writing was also funny and snarky and I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit.  But, my favorite part of the story was Finn.  I love me a smart and sexy nerdy guy and he really is the epitome of that.  This is a fun friends to lovers romance!

Changing Course

Prologue

Brett

“Sarah, don’t do this. Damn it! Stay with me.” I reach over and gently brush the blood-soaked hair off her forehead.

Even in this horrific moment, I’m in absolute awe of how beautiful she looks. Bleeding and broken, unmoving in my arms, she is still the most mesmerizing woman I have ever laid eyes on. Deep down, I know this is just the husk of my wife. My Sarah would never have done this to herself. More importantly, she would have never done this to me. Maybe it takes this level of madness, but I finally realize that I have lost her completely.

Whether she lives or dies, Sarah is gone. This is not the woman who made me laugh more in seven years than the rest of my life combined. She definitely isn’t the woman I spent years planning a future with, a future that now no longer exists. I feel a heavy weight in my chest at my silent confession, but oddly enough, I also feel a weight lifted off my shoulders. I have watched this woman disintegrate in front of my eyes for almost seven months. Every day, losing her a little more. The light in her eyes fading, while piece by piece and bit by bit, she lost grip of reality. Mentally, emotionally, and now physically, she’s left me.

My Sarah died seven months ago on her way home from dinner, and I will never see her walk back into my life. Suddenly, I can’t breathe. I’m terrified—and not only because Sarah might finally succeed in taking her own life. I’m paralyzed by the realization that my life is spiraling down in a free fall headed straight for misery, and the only thing I can think to do is anchor myself to this dying woman. I love Sarah with all my heart, but I am not clinging to the woman in my arms. Rather, I’m clinging to the life I thought we were going to have together. I have to accept that she isn’t there anymore. Her heart might still be beating, but the bloody, confused, emotionally lost woman I am holding now is only the shell of my first and only love.

“Where the fuck is that ambulance?!” I yell as loud as my cracking voice will allow. Stroking the little bit of her unmarred skin I’m able to reach, I whisper in her ear, “Hang on, baby.” Then I repeat the one sentence I have said almost daily since the tragic event that stole her from me. Maybe I say it for her, maybe just for me, but I know that it’s the biggest lie I have ever uttered. “Just hang on, baby. It’s all going to be okay.”

Excerpt

I pulled the cruiser into Jackie’s driveway. What the hell was wrong with me? It was only yesterday that I’d gotten her off and yet here I was, sitting unannounced in her driveway like a stalker.

If I’d thought it difficult to get her off my mind before, what had happened in the wine cellar had made it damn near impossible.

Everyone I’d talked to had said the same thing—that she’d turned down each and every cop or fireman that had asked her out. No one was sure if she was just trying to keep her personal life outside of the work environment or what, but I intended to find out. The insane pull between us didn’t leave me any other choice.

With a sigh, I unbuckled my seatbelt and glanced at the small bungalow. It was cute with white siding and black shutters. Hanging baskets of colorful flowers hung from hooks around the veranda and a kickass bicycle was leaning against the side of the house. That helped to explain why she had such a firm ass.

I opened the door to the cruiser when the front door of the house burst open, and Jackie stood there frozen, her hand held to her chest and such an expression of fear on her face that I bolted out of the car and up the front steps.

“What’s wrong?” I demanded as soon as I was in front of her.

“Wh-what are you doing here?” she asked in barely a whisper.

I relaxed a fraction once it was clear she was okay. “I figured you could use a lift to Don’s place for your car. Didn’t think you would’ve driven home last night.” I shrugged. “It’s been quiet today, so I popped by to see if you wanted me to drive you over.”

She released a pent-up breath and relief washed over her face. “Oh, thank God.”

I frowned and gripped her upper arms. “What’s going on? Everything okay?”

She glanced down at where my hands lay on her soft skin and looked back up to me, blinking twice. “It’s nothing. When I saw the cruiser in the driveway…never mind.” She shook her head.

I studied her for a moment. She was sexy just rolling out of bed with her hair thrown in a messy bun and last night’s make-up still on her face. “You sure?”

She nodded and her eyes flicked down to my hands once more. “Why are you always touching me whenever I see you?” Her voice had come out all breathy, not at all convincing me that she didn’t like my hands right where they were.

I grazed her collarbones with my thumbs, causing goose bumps to form on her skin. “I think you know exactly why.”

The fucking lights. They are all I
can remember. Everywhere I turn I see them. They haunt my dreams, and now my
reality. She liked the lights. I do remember that. It was part of her life, and
in turn a part of mine, until the day I forgot it all.
Weapons. Big or small, they can be
anything I need them to be. Unlike people in my life, they are predictable,
dependable. Without any effort they can cause so much destruction. Touching
them they are slick, smooth, and silent when I demand it. Who wouldn’t find
them beautiful?
Ink. I’ve loved it since I can
remember. It defines me. It’s my release. When I feel like I’m about to blow I
turn to the needle. It is the only high I need. I brand people. It’s what I do.
Kross Brannon is the best there is when it comes to tattoos. My company proves
it.
I never teach. Those that work for
me learn from someone else. I work solo. Always have and always will…but then I
looked up and saw her, standing in my fucking shop, beautiful, tattooed, and
her soul screaming for me to reach out.
That’s the moment everything
started falling into place…
I’ve waited my whole life for this
moment. Nothing and no one will stand in my way now. I want to be pissed at
her, but she’s just given me everything I’ve fucking dreamed of since I was a
kid. He’s giving me a chance. I will not let him down.
But then he touched me.
My entire life I’ve been cold, but
now a spark has ignited and I’m starting to warm. What does this mean? He can’t
know my secrets. It could ruin everything. I want him, but I’ll never give in.
The tug of war inside will never defeat what I want. I don’t care how raw my
hands become from the rope. Delta Rohr has never fallen for a man, and I don’t
intend to start now.

Most
like to think that love and war will never entwine, leaving the two paths
separate, but sometimes to find the one worth fighting for you must enter into
war. The infamous question will always remain: all is fair in love and war?
Will it always be a myth or will they find out?

My eyes travel from his lips back to his eyes,
locking into place. I hook my thumbs behind the front waistband of my shorts,
giving them a prop to avoid an awkward stance, before going for the
introduction I couldn’t muster last night. “I’m Delta Rohr, the girl
that’s going to be one of the best in a man’s world. Ink is my life. I wear my
portfolio on my body. I’m an artist, only I want my canvas to be skin. I want
my artwork to be worn. I’ve wanted an opportunity like this for a long time,
and I’ll give up anything to get it, but I need the tools to get there. I need
the best fucking mentor there is. I need you, Kross.”

He remains staring at me while my intestines
start twisting into knots, saying nothing at all. Maybe my answer wasn’t
adequate enough. I’m not sure if I should say anything else or leave it at that.
His stance finally breaks and his arms rise and fold over his head, his hands
gripping the back collar of his shirt. He pulls it over his head, baring his
torso a few inches at a time until it’s completely off. Oh hell. His body looks
better without clothes than with. He obviously works out, his chiseled form
confirming it. Let’s not forget the ink spread across his chest and running
down both arms. The lower part of his sleeves and the ink that peeks out of his
collar, running up part of his neck, is the only thing I’ve noticed until now.
Now that he’s standing here shirtless. He tosses the shirt over his shoulder,
freeing up his hands.

“What are you doing?”

I immediately notice the silver, square, belt
buckle in a dull metal finish, cut out to form a raised skull in the center; my
favorite emblem, and the masculine opposite to mine…exactly what he tattooed
on my body last night, complete with a pink hair bow. The black, elastic band
of his briefs is peeking out of the waistband of his jeans. He works to
unbuckle his belt, letting each end hang, before going back for the button. He
pops it through the slit and then slides down the zipper, revealing the royal
blue underwear hugging his hips. My eyes widen. Is he stripping up here? What
the hell is he doing?

“Kross, what are you doing?” I ask
again, needing an answer. My heart rate is beating faster with each movement he
makes.

“Starting part two.”

“Which is?” I’m becoming nervous. Is he
just using me for sex? Dammit, I feel so stupid. I actually thought this was a
real interview. I should have known this was just a setup.

“Letting you tattoo my body.”

I regain focus. “Say what?”

“I don’t repeat myself. Listen the first
time.” He pushes the band of his underwear down his body, along with the
waist of his jeans, leaving them not far above his…

“It’s kind of hard to listen with you
stripping naked. You’re a guy and I’m a girl. It’s human nature to look. So sue
me.”

He grabs me by the arm and pulls me toward his
station. “The second part of this interview is to see you give it a shot.
To me, tattooing is a natural talent. It takes more than the ability to trace
an object to be a good tattooer. An artist is well rounded in all areas:
drawing, tracing, visualizing, shading, design and color, all while having a
steady hand. You may be good at drawing with a pencil, but it’s a little more
difficult with a vibrating gun in your hand puncturing the skin hundreds of
times per minute. I’m not wasting my time to make shit more pleasant. I’m
making great, flawless.”

He releases my arm and steps over the chair in a
straddling stance, drawing my attention to his black, high-top Converse shoes
matching my pink ones, before grabbing a thin sheet of paper off the counter
space. My nerves are on overdrive now. “I’ve already drawn you out a
design that matches the one I tattooed on your pelvis last night, minus the
fucking bow. It’s a pretty simple design but a good one. Basic skull and
crossbones fit my personality so I’ll deal with it on my body. Wouldn’t be the
first version anyway, but since this is your first it’s going somewhere I can
cover up if you fuck it up. My sleeves are sacred, my masterpieces. Only the
best adds to it. You earn the right to leave your mark as an artist
there.”

He pushes his pants down some more, until the top
half of his firm ass is bare. If he pushes them down any further I’ll be able
to see his dick. Without breaking he applies the transfer of ink from paper to
skin below his waistline, and low enough he can cover it by simply buttoning
his pants. He cannot possibly expect me to give him a tattoo that close to his
dick. Come on….

He grabs a pair of black, latex gloves off the
tray. It looks like everything is already setup. “If you want to be the
best in a man’s world, then you better be serious as fuck about learning and
perfecting. There are some that have made it and done so well, but tattooing
has always been a man’s art. I’m not showing you how to setup or prep today,
because that’s not necessary before you get the job. I looked at your ability
to draw when I looked at your body last night. I want to see technique. I’m a
hands on learner so that’s how I teach. You have about a two-hour window. All
of my artists will be here at three today. That gives me time to clean up after
you’re done.”

“So you let everyone interview this way? How
do you have any blank skin left?”

A smirk begins to form. “Nope. You’re the
first. I don’t normally teach.”

My nerves were at a good five. They were just
bumped to ten. “Uh, then why me?”

“I’m feeling giving I guess.” He hands
me the gloves and sits down on the chair, then laces his hands behind his head
and leans back against the back of the chair. “Tattoo me.”

I am totally and inevitably fucked…

I found books when I was going through a hard
time in life. They became my means of escape when things got bad. I realized
quickly how much I loved to take a backseat to someone else’s life and watch
the journey unfold. That began my journey with books in November of 2012. I
constantly had a book open on my Kindle app. Never in a million years would I
have imagined myself as a writer, because I never thought I was creative
enough. I’m living proof that things will fall into place when they’re meant to
be. People will make their way into our lives when we don’t expect it, setting
the path for what we are meant to do. Never give up on people. Never stop
taking a chance on others. Someone took a chance on trusting me with her work
when she didn’t know me from a stranger on the street and gave me the
opportunity of a lifetime as our relationship progressed, which led me to
editing and writing as well. This is my dream I never knew I had. As soon as I
sat down and gave writing a shot, it was like the floodgates opened. Now, I am
lost in a world of fiction in my head, new characters constantly screaming for
their stories to be told. Continue to dream and to go for them. No one ever
found happiness by sitting on the sidelines. Sometimes we have to take risks
and put ourselves out there. Thank you for all of your support, and may there
be many books to come. XOXO- C

The Lost by Cole McCade

Date of Publication: August 25, 2015

Blurb

She’s known it her whole life. She knows it every time she spreads her legs. Every time she begs for the pain, the pleasure, the heat of a hard man driving deep inside. She’s a slave to her own twisted lusts–and it’s eating her alive. She loves it. She craves it. Sex is her drug, and she’s always chasing her next fix. But nothing can satisfy her addiction, not even the nameless men she uses and tosses aside. No one’s ever given her what she truly needs.

Until Gabriel Hart.

Cold. Controlled. Impenetrable. Ex-Marine Gabriel Hart isn’t the kind of man to come running when Leigh crooks her pretty little finger. She loathes him. She hungers for him. He’s the only one who understands how broken she is, and just what it takes to satisfy the emptiness inside. But Gabriel won’t settle for just one night. He wants to claim her, keep her, make her forever his. Together they are the lost, the ruined, the darkness at the heart of Crow City.

But Leigh has a darkness of her own. A predator stalking through her past–one she’ll do anything to escape.

Even if it means running from the one man who could love her…and leaving behind something more precious to her than life itself.

PROLOGUE

“State your name.”

Cold, clipped words, blending into the noise of the police station. Leigh lifted her head from a fixed study of her clenched fingers. Colors whirled around her in a lurid carnival nightmare, too bright, too blurry. On a bench on the far side of the room, a wasted and broken scarecrow woman picked at a scab on her wrist with a certain habitual listlessness, oozing diseased red-brown blood over liver spots. Her tendons were rails under her skin, and the dull gleam of cuffs chained her to the bench. She raised her head and stared at Leigh with yellowed eyes that captured her with a sort of empty, terrifying promise.

Across the desk a policewoman waited, with that compassionate impatience only a half-step from pity and shoulder-to-shoulder with disgust. Her flat blue eyes said she’d been trained to care, but couldn’t be bothered anymore. Leigh swallowed and tugged her hoodie close against the tinny air-conditioned chill. Her mouth had dried to a tacky, sticky mess, gummy pills of lipstick beading on her lips, and her tongue was a bloated and useless organ, this swollen pink thing pushing pointlessly against her teeth.

“Leigh,” she ground out. “Clarissa Leigh…” Her married name scratched sandpaper syllables against her throat. “…van Zandt.”

“And Miss van Zandt, do you know why you’re here?”

She nodded, her neck a creaking wooden puppet-hinge. “I do.”

“Your family’s been worried about you.”

“I know.”

She knew what she should do here. Bow her head in shame and contrition, maybe even sniffle. But she looked for the emotions and they weren’t there; just scraps and tatters, clinging to the empty place where they belonged. She had no feeling left, hollowed out and lost and wondering how she’d ended up here. This didn’t feel real. Instead it was a dream where everyone leered in fisheye close-up, their smiles all teeth and stretched red lips and manic glee. She wanted to run, but somehow she’d gone too numb to do anything but sit here surrounded by the stink of fear-sweat, stale beer, and that particular police-station smell of urine soaked into concrete for decades on end.

“What happened to you?” the officer asked. Leigh didn’t answer, and the officer’s pen tapped against the forms on her desk, rat-tat-tat, rat-tat-tat, Morse code for I’d rather be anywhere but here with this spoiled little runaway princess. “It’s been four years. You were declared legally dead.”

“That’s all right.” She closed her eyes with a laugh that ripped her guts up into her mouth, and buried her face in her hands. Dead. Dead.

Yeah, that was about right.

“Miss van Zandt?”

Stop calling me that.

“Miss van Zandt. I need you to focus on my voice.”

Stop calling me that!

Leigh took a measured breath and opened her eyes. Her shoulders squared. The bolts on the back of the hard, ass-biting chair dug into her shoulder blades. “I am focused. I can hear you just fine.”

“Eyes are dilated.” The officer—her nametag read Maroni, could there be a more clichéd name for a Crow City cop—leaned across the desk, peering at her face. Then she beckoned to the aide hovering over them like a mannequin. “I’ve seen this too many times. Drugs and prostitution.” She talked about Leigh like she wasn’t even there. “We’ll have to clean her up before her husband gets here.”

“I’m not on drugs. I’ve never been on drugs.”

Maroni’s pen-clicking stopped. Her disbelief was a heavy thing, push-push-pushing until Leigh nearly laughed.

“You’re not on drugs.”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

There it was. The first hint of exasperation. Of frustration, stitched into knitted brows and the purse of lips in just the right shade of I can’t be a woman, I’m a cop mauve. Because like anyone normal, anyone who wasn’t fucking broken to pieces and liked being that way, Maroni needed to make sense of this. Needed to quantify it in a world where the rules worked as normal and everyone wanted to chase that dream of happiness that wasn’t anything but desperation painted over of a frantic tally of things. Things of plastic, things with value created by people whose upper lips curled when they looked down at little girls like Leigh, and demanded she account for herself in sane, rational ways that made proper sense.

Sorry, Officer Maroni.

I’m not the kind of thing that makes much sense.

Maroni pushed a harsh sound through her teeth. “You had a job, a husband, a newborn son. You had a life other people would kill for, and we find you here on the streets. Were you pressured? Kidnapped?”

“No. None of that.” Leigh shook her head.

“You’ll have to explain, then.”

“I left.” She trailed off, lips parted; no words came for long seconds, until she managed, “I…I was afraid.”

“Of what?” Maroni tried to catch her eye, but Leigh looked down at her hands, at her chipped pink fingernails dipped in the sparkles of shooting stars. “Miss van Zandt. If someone was hurting you, you need to tell us now so we can take appropriate steps to protect you.”

“No. No one hurt me. Not like that.”

“I’m afraid you’ll need to be more clear. What were you afraid of?”

“Of…”

She struggled for an answer. Struggled for something this woman would accept, something that would make her sigh with sympathy and pity and relieved disdain that said there, but for the Grace of God…

But again, she found nothing. Nothing but the truth, and Leigh shrugged as she looked up at the policewoman and wondered if she had daughters who might one day be like Leigh, daughters who would cut stark red lines of fingernails in the walls of flesh that caged her in the shape of pop culture’s perfect woman.

“Of the inevitable monotony of it all,” she said.

And smiled.
