Synopsis

Losing your ability to speak at the age of seventeen; it’s not normal or fair.

But trauma, has a way of throwing normality out the window.

Dani lives anything but a normal life.

Her sister is married to one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Her best friends are rockstar duo AD2.

And she has more love around her than most people experience in a lifetime.

But that doesn’t change the fact their parents are dead.

Or that it’s her fault.

It seems her new normal is being a mute, living on the inside, unable to actually communicate on the outside.

That is until Hollywood’s newest heartthrob Lincoln Greene hires her as his assistant for the summer.

He’s gorgeous, completely unavailable, and unobtainable.

But that doesn’t stop her from wondering…if things were different…would he want her?

If she was whole, would he be the other half?

Review

‘We rode the elevator in silence. We walked down the hall  . . . in silence. I opened my door – yup, you guessed it – in silence. The silence was going to kill me.’

This book took me by complete surprise, although I am not sure why I have yet to read a book by Rachel that didn’t blow me away. Capture is the first book in the Seaside Pictures series and is a spin-off of the Seaside series. I personally have not read the Seaside series so I can attest that this can very easily be read as a standalone.

‘Cake. Forget Lincoln Greene. Forget Seaside. Focus on the cake. Chocolate Cake. My therapist had said I needed goals. Well, my new goal? Eating that cake while giving Lincoln the middle finger in my mind’

I two concerns going into this book. First I was worries that with the main character being a mute that there would not be enough dialogue for me. This is a person hang-up of mine so I was very excited to see that through text and the use of secondary characters there was more than enough dialogue to make the story flow smoothly. My second concern was this was a “fame” book. I often find books in which the main character is famous are just not my favorite. There are exceptions to this but more often than not the book is about being “famous” and the troubles that come with that. This is just not my personal favorite type of plot and was the reason up until now I had not read the Seaside series. Well, let me tell you that is a mistake I plan on rectifying ASAP. Capture was so much more than a book about fame. Lincoln was so much more than a movie star. Lincoln (and several other characters’) fame was not the issue in the book and not used as the main drama in the book. I am so happy I decided to read this book because as usual Rachel blew me away.

‘Great, just great. Not only was I unable to speak, but now I was a sexually frustrated mute.’

After a great tragedy, Dani has become a selective mute and she has lost the support of her boyfriend and friends. She left seaside to live with her sister and bother in law who are both famous actors. In order to get her out of her shell and avoid being alone all the time her brother in law gets her a job as a personal assistant to the other main actor on the movie they are filming. Lincoln Greene is a Hollywood heartthrob but from the moment he meets 17 year old mute Dani he treats her the same he would anyone else. Using texts to communicate they form a quick friendship. Lincoln is clearly attracted to beautiful Dani but she is seventeen and the sister of his costars so he knows he must hold himself back. But how long can he resist the one girl to truly see him and get under his skin?

‘I wanted to earn her in the worst way possible. I wanted it to be hard, because I knew if it was  easy, it wasn’t real. And it felt real. Too real.’

Capture was exactly what I needed after coming off a angst heavy book hangover. Fun and fast I fell deeply for Linc and Dani as well as the entire ensemble of characters. Once I started the book nothing in my life could have made me put it down. I felt an instant connection to Dani and her quick wit and snarky attitude and Lincoln was book boyfriend perfection. I am DESPERATE for the next book because I need, yes NEED, Zane’s story. Rachel Van Dyken is a master story teller who does sexual tension, quick wit and unique story lines like no one else.

 Never

Say Never (Sniper 1 Security, #2)

(unedited excerpt – subject may change prior to publication)

“How’s the business goin’?” Travis asked as he steered Ryan toward a booth near

the front of the bar.

“Busy,” Ryan answered.

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Of course.” Ryan smiled as they approached Travis’s wife Kylie and their

husband Gage. “Good to see y’all again.”

“Same here. Have a seat.” Gage motioned toward the opposite side of the table

as he slid his other arm over Kylie’s shoulders and pulled her close while

Travis grabbed a chair.

Flipping it around backward, Travis straddled the seat, placing his elbow on

the table. Ryan didn’t miss that Travis’s other hand disappeared under the

table, likely resting on Kylie’s leg if he had to guess.

“We weren’t sure you’d be able to make it,” Travis said.

Ryan knew he could always be called back to work at any time, depending on the

case, but he didn’t need to tell Travis as much. The man ran a multi-million

dollar resort, so he understood. “I’m glad I could.”

“How’s Z doin’?” Kylie asked, peering toward the back of the room where Z had

been pulled away by his friends a few minutes before.

“You know Z. Nothing gets him down.”

Gage smiled. “Seems he’s quite interested in you.”

Knowing better, Ryan still turned to glance in Z’s direction. He thought for

sure he’d be busted stealing a look, but Z was paying him no attention.

“And you’re quite interested in him,” Kylie noted.

Ryan’s head snapped back around to face her. He was about to fire off a

rebuttal, but her smile silenced him.

“Leave the poor man alone,” Travis injected. “He’s in denial.”

Ryan snorted.

“I concur,” Gage added.

“Why’s everybody gangin’ up on me?” Ryan questioned, unable to hide the smile.

“Seemed like the thing to do.” Travis took a sip of his beer.

Review

Never Say Never was my first foray into the romantic entanglements of a same sex couple and they don’t come much sexier or complicated than the delicious alpha-male filled Sniper 1 security team or in this particular instance- Ryan and Z.

Z is written to perfection, with his distinguished charm and cheeky charisma lending him the cover of a playful no-commitments type of man but it is when he finally let his guard down around Ryan or RT as he’s known that Z’s character took on a sublime level of depth and compassion and romance and some incredibly hot x-rated alpha bedroom show and tell.

When they are thrown together into an untenable situation it’s up to Z to prove to Ryan how amazing they could be together whilst also working a case.

How these two characters interact with one another had me smitten from the get go. RT has been burned in the past and as such has some pretty formidable shields erected to keep everyone at a distance and none more so than his devilishly handsome employee Z. Where Z is quirky and instantly likable, RT remains distant and removed but he is ultimately, one of the most vulnerable and caring and beautiful characters, he simply hides his softer side better but what better man to uncover those intriguing layers and hidden coves than Z?

‘Z was toeing off his boots, then tugging off his jeans.

Fucking hell.

Standing before him was six foot seven inches of prime alpha male, wearing nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs and a gorgeous grin. Ryan’s mouth dried up like the Sahara Desert.

“You goin’ in like that?” Z asked, pointing at Ryan by tipping his beer bottle toward him.”’

Nicole Edwards is a master (or mistress?) of her craft. I literally haven’t read a book or come across a set of characters that I didn’t instantly fawn all over and the fact that she got to pop my M/M cherry with Never Say Never, I’m so happy. She gave me a compelling storyline with two of the hottest, most sensitive but kick-ass alpha heroes I’ve ever encountered and as such has me a little addicted to M/M books. This is a terrific series and it’s just getting better and more diverse as each book moves along. I’m so excited for the third book but also a little morose that I can’t read this one for the first time all over again but what I can do is re-read it and re-live every exciting, scandalously hot and romantically sweet moment between these two fantastic men.

Synopsis

To the outside world, Taylor Hudson has it all: beauty, money and social status. But Taylor’s privileged life is far lonelier than it appears.

Levi is the inside man on a job to steal fifteen million dollars from one of the town’s wealthiest families, putting him on a crash course with Taylor. Neither of them believe in love, but lust. . . that’s undeniable.

Now they’re locked in a wicked game of seduction and it’s unclear who is playing who. But neither of them expected the affair to lead to the deepest connection they’ve ever experienced. Because beneath Taylor’s perfect exterior lies a need for love that mirrors Levi’s own.

As the heist approaches, how can Levi protect Taylor from the truth?

Is he willing to give up everything to save the one girl who’s made him want to be a better man?

Review

Perfect Betrayal was a story that took me a couple of chapters to warm up to as it starts out fairly slow as we’re introduced to the players and the plot. As it begins we’re introduced to our slightly unlikable lead female protagonist, Taylor. Taylor is your quintessential poor little rich girl when we first start out, she is obnoxious, entitled and just a little bit narcissistic but as the story unfurls and circumstances alter and shift so too does Taylor’s perspective on life and indeed herself, she matures, is quicker to accept her faults and ultimately apologise for them but she still manages to retain that sassy kick-ass ‘I don’t need anyone’ attitude and slowly transforms from an insipid privileged brat into an independent and incredibly layered character. What brings about her character’s progression is the introduction of the maintenance guy around her family mansion, Levi. Holding a grudge against the world and primarily the upper echelons of society Levi and his friends become embroiled in a plot that will ultimately change the course of his life. Levi is a remarkable character, his transformation is a lot more subtle than Taylor’s, when we first meet him he is cocksure of himself, he knows what he wants and how he’s going to achieve it but what throws the proverbial spanner in the works is recently graduated Taylor, a girl with beauty, intelligence and just enough sadness and hurt beneath the surface that Levi is instantly intrigued.

‘He unclasped her bra and pulled it from her body. Levi’s lips and hands slid over every inch, giving equal attention to all of her anatomy. He kissed Taylor’s neck, her jaw, her chin, and finally her lips-lips that through all their smiles and frowns sometimes hateful words had always been asking him to stay.’

Season has written one hell of a book and I don’t say that lightly. It may have taken a chapter or two to get in to it but once it starts rolling, it gains momentum and blossoms into a fantastic edge of your seat suspense story with quite frankly one of the hottest, most spectacular sex scenes I have ever read about and a fantastic twist in the plot that admittedly I never saw coming. As well as all of that it has a desperately swoon-worthy romantic ending, just perfection. It’s a terrific tale of betrayal, lust, family relationships not necessarily established through blood and of course forgiveness and love. It’s important to note the other great love story in Perfect Betrayal, that of Taylor and Suzanne her ‘nanny’, it was emotional and superbly written especially when taken in conjunction with the behaviour of Taylor’s actual family. This is definitely a book that you’re going to want to pick up in the near future.

Before We Were Strangers Review Tour and Giveaway

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City.

BWWSfinalcoverTo the Green-eyed Lovebird:

We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House.

You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more.

We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other.

Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding…

I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello.

After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half?

EXCERPT:

  1. You Remembered . . .

Grace

The present is our own. The right-this-second, the here-and- now, this moment before the next, is ours for the taking. It’s the only free gift the universe has to offer. The past doesn’t belong to us anymore, and the future is just a fantasy, never guaranteed. But the present is ours to own. The only way we can realize that fantasy is if we embrace the now.

I had been closed off for a long time, and I hadn’t allowed myself to imagine the future because I was still stuck in the past. Though it was impossible, I had tried to re-create what Matt and I once had. I wanted nothing else; he was all I could imagine.

But Orvin once told me that time is the currency of life. And I had lost so much of it. It was that idea of lost time that finally made me realize I needed to move on, that I would never have what I once had with Matt. I had to mourn our relationship and move on.

At least, that’s what I told myself.

Two months ago I was walking around in a thick fog of regret. I was going through the motions but wasn’t feeling anything. I’d stare at my new wrinkles in the mirror and wonder where they came from. I wasted more time, repeating the same thing day in and day out, barely present in my own life. I wasn’t looking to break out of the cycle in search of anything meaningful.

Until I saw Matt in the subway station.

Everything changed. I could see in color again, every image vivid and crisp.

Over the last fifteen years, the pain of what had happened to us waxed and waned. Many times I tried to force myself to stop thinking about him, but there were too many reminders. I thought, if I ever saw him again, he’d look right through me, like I was a ghost from his past. That’s how he made me feel that summer after college: someone who no longer existed.

But when I saw him in the station, his eyes locked on mine. He recognized me instantly, and all I could see in his face was pure wonder. It was like he was seeing the sunset over the ocean for the first time. As my train disappeared into the tunnel, his expression turned to desperation, and that’s when I knew there was a missing piece to our story. What was behind his desperation? What had happened to him in the last fifteen years that would send him running down the platform, his hand outstretched, his eyes full of longing?

I needed to find the answer. I had an idea of where I could find Matt, but I was too scared to look.

Review

“I felt it for Grace before I even has a name for it. I might have said the word a million times, but it sounded different now that I meant it. When I thought about what we had, it didn’t matter that it was just friendship. I loved her.”

There are some stories you can just tell will stick with you and call to you to re-visit them again and again when you need to feel the intense emotions you had the first time all over again. I was unsure go into this book how much I would love it, I have a hang up about wasted years passing by – it gives me sever anxiety, but WOW this story was everything!

“Hi Jane. This is my friend, Matthias. He has excellent blood and he’ll like to sell you some.”

Witty, romantic, intense with surprises I didn’t see coming Before We Were Strangers was a perfect blend of a New Adult novel and a Contemporary Novel. We start off with Matt and Grace in the present and after having not seen each other in fifteen years they catch a glance at one another on a subway platform in New York. This leads to the Craigslist missed connections ad. Flashing back 15 year we spend half the book falling in love. We fell in love with Matt and Grace, fell in love with New York and in love with that early 20s intense friendship where you want to see the person first thing in the morning and every night before bed. Matt and Grace were fast friends and before anything else they were true friends. I miss that young, poor youthful exuberance that felt like EVERYTHING and in Before We Were Strangers I got to experience it all over again. New Adult perfection I laughed cried and desperately begged for them to take the next step and give in.

I didn’t know what happened, but in the span of a minute, I felt like my whole fucking life was over.”

But youth and love don’t always mix well for the long term and decisions were made, mistakes happen and before we know it the two people who seemed like they couldn’t be more in love and more perfect have not talked in fifteen years. My heart was broken and as the truth comes out and Matt and Grace attempt to be friends again my heart continued to break over and over again to the point I felt like I might never be whole again. I was drowning in feelings and I wasn’t sure I could ever breathe again.

“Would I ever be able to stop thinking about it felt to be wrapped up in him like that? Our bodies merged into one. Sleeping alone would never feel normal again.”

The new adult part of the story had me reminiscence about my own past and laughing and loving the whole time. I knew what was coming and try as I might to protect my heart I could not help but fall deeply for Matt and Grace. The contemporary half that takes place in the present left me emotional and raw. By this point I was so involved I could not stop even if I wanted to (but not for one second did I really want to.) While still witty and steamy (and yes this book is very very sexy) the present was all about falling for the person each has become and learning to forgive past mistakes and hoping that they can move forward.

“The present it our own. The right-this-second, the here-and-now, this moment before the next, is ours for the taking.”

I you love sweet romances, hilarious banter, ugly cries and epic loves than Before We Were Strangers will not disappoint. It was a story that gripped me and wouldn’t let go. I truly hope that you read this book and get the chance to experience the vast array of intense emotions it provokes I promise you will come out of it happy you did.
