Review

I’m not sure where to start! This was definitely different for me! I’ll just start by talking a little about what the book is about. It’s about the rich Vs the poor. It’s about old money and politics. It’s about Cal and Elizabeth’s ‘just for appearance’ marriage. It’s about marrying for the wrong reasons. And it’s about making a decision and dealing with everything that comes with that decision.

Elizabeth and Cal Fitzgerald? oh lord. Elizabeth made a conscious decision to marry into wealth for hope of a better life, although not for reasons you may think like the automatic thought of being a gold digger- but still she made the decision. Cal Fitzgerald *Inserts Gag.* Lord. I’ve never hated a character so much and it wasn’t the ‘love to hate’ either. He disgusted me.

“… you understand? Fucking whores like you love the cock.”

Cal and Elizabeth perfect their act of doting husband and wife for the public and more importantly the camera’s. That is until Alex is hired to protect all of Cal’s assets, Elizabeth being one of those assets. OH ALEX. You saving grace, you. Alex shone so bright, he really stole the show for me. He saw through the whole facade that is Elizabeth and Cal’s marriage. He was the perfect gentleman and alpha in one that had me completely swooning. He cut through all the BS and he was completely the reason why you rooted for these two characters.

“Forget complicated. If you’re scared to tell me, fine. But don’t feed me the same lines you feed everyone else, I see through your little act, sweetheart.”

This was a tough one for me. I was stuck between a 3.5 and a 4 rating. I hated, despised, loathed Cal. Yes that was pretty amazing of Rachael Duncan to pull that much hate for a fictional character from me but I may just have hated him too much. I was also conflicted with Elizabeth and her mother. I get the circumstances that led to the decisions made, I do, but It was a mix of selfishness and manipulation but a decision was also made willingly and knowingly, so at times when I should feel sorry for them I didn’t. I blamed Elizabeth’s mother more so than Elizabeth. As much as Elizabeth put herself in that situation it is still an awful life to be living and she takes it on the chin and deals with it pretty well. Alex, I think, brings out the best in her, and the person she never got to be. This focused on more of the development of the story than the romance. There was still a little romance but more of the story itself and how it developed which was interesting. Like I said I was torn between the 3.4 and 4 rating, I was leaning towards the 3.5 more so than the 4 BUT I’m not going to lie that ending and epilogue was kind of epic. That epilogue sealed the deal, it was pretty amazing and is a complete game changer for the story. Now I don’t think I can actually stomach much more of Cal but how this story will end is pretty intriguing and the conclusion to this duet is out pretty soon!

Will Clayton is running for the Virginia senate and in order to gain the election he confides in the Price firm. Jackie is assigned to his campaign. When the lines begin to blur, will these two figure out what is more important, love or career?

These two were so made for one another. The suspense was killing me, I just had to know what they were going to do with the public scrutiny that would follow. The web of lies in D.C was beautifully wove in this story! I would say the novel does need a bit of formatting for the character change of perspective. ShutterGirl by C.D. Reiss Review

He can throw my camera off a balcony, and nothing has to change. We can stay king and queen of the same city, and different worlds.

Except this is Hollywood, and here, anything can happen.

Review

I have been known to quite enjoy C.D. Reiss’ books. In the past her books have been sexy and alluring in a naughty and kinky kind of way. I knew that ShutterGirl was going to be different as this one is a contemporary romance and not erotica. I was excited for it though because I do love Ms. Reiss’ writing. It is poetic and rhythmic and always lures me right in. ShutterGirl did not disappoint.

This is the story of one celebrity, and much as the city, he is mine.

ShutterGirl is told in alternating point of views; Laine and Michael’s. Laine and Michael are from two different sides of the tracks. Laine grew up rough and in foster care. Michael was raised with loads of money and family stardom. They meet in their teens but nothing really comes of their mutual attraction. Now Michael and Laine are adults and he is the hunted and she is the hunter. In other words Michael is a very famous movie star and Laine is the best of the best of paparazzi. But even behind the lens she can feel her attraction to Michael.

“He was lightning before a rainstorm, drowning a dark road in white light for a split second before night soaked the way.”

Michael knows that he should stay away from Laine too. This kind of relationship is dangerous to both of their careers, but she is simply irresistible to him.

“I wanted to touch something with the blood of life coursing through it. I was going to chase Laine.”

Laine and Michael’s relationship really spins both of their worlds in a tale spin that they could never imagine and that is really the best part of this story. The angst of being in the spotlight and when the past comes back to bite both of them in the ass.

ShutterGirl is VERY different from C.D. Reiss’ Submission Series so try not to get hung up on that. If you are fan of dramatic contemporary romances with action packed plots then this is the story for you. Through in some fabulous writing and you have an instant hit! Really enjoyed this one!

“This place is unbelievable.” I looked over at him as he stared out the window. “I bet you bring all the girls here.”

“Actually, you’re the first.”

Yep, I was a goner.

“There. Look. A shooting star.” He pointed excitedly.

I caught the end of the blazing trail. “Make a wish.”

“It already came true.” He squeezed my hand.

I didn’t think I ever wanted to let it go. It just fit so perfectly with mine, like they were meant to be together. We were meant to be together. I rolled my head to face him while still resting on the headrest. “I like you, Mr. Brandt.”

Instead of answering me, he leaned over the console, causing serious eruptions in my blood. As he got closer, the anticipation had my chest heaving hard for breaths. He reached out and took a lock of hair next to my cheek and stroked it slowly, never losing eye contact. I finally saw that his eyes were a swirl of hazel and green, and his lips only inches from me were a supple red that screamed for mine. His thumb brushed my jawline, causing me to shiver inappropriately. He rested his forehead on mine, trying to control his own urge to jump me.

“I’m going to kiss you, if you’ll let me.” He restrained his whisper.

I couldn’t take my eyes off his lips. The words, “Uh-huh,” managed to slip out as we were suspended in air.

He let go of my hair and gripped the back of my neck desperately as he grazed his lips on mine, releasing a gasp from me. I was fully charged and ready to go. I was ready for him to take me to another place. Somewhere I had only read about. A place I never dreamed I would visit.

There are those books that we read to lift us up. There are those that we read to make us laugh. As romance readers – be honest now – some of the books we read are purely for their smut value. Every once in a while, we come across a truly special book. Something so profound and meaningful, a book that invokes such deep feelings and responses in us merely by what we read on its pages. This is one of those books.

Truthfully, I didn’t want to read this book. I even put it off for a few days. I picked it up, started it and put it back down to return to later. I’ve had a long, scary and depressing week, and I was fully expecting this to be nothing more than a morose and tragic sob fest that I wasn’t sure I was up to reading. But this is what my RCR blogger boss lady assigned to me, so this is what I was reading. And I couldn’t have been more wrong. Oh, don’t misunderstand me, this was book was tragic alright – immensely, overwhelmingly, horrifically tragic – but it was also surprisingly full of hope and a love so deep, true and pure that it was staggering. No, I wasn’t expecting that, not at all.

Baylor lived a golden life, adored by her loving parents and Tessa, her best friend/sister. Tessa was in the throes of her own beautiful love story with her high school sweetheart, Grady Reilly. Through them, Baylor is introduced to Grady’s stepbrother, Brandt, and that meeting was the unmistakable beginning of a special, once-in-a-lifetime love story. It’s benign to say that Brandt and Baylor’s “attraction was instantaneous” because, really, how can you describe the moment that two halves destined to become a whole meet? There is no way to adequately describe that, but yet somehow the talented Dani Hart managed to capture this poignant moment between Brandt and Baylor perfectly.

“I love you, Bay. You’re the reason I breathe.”

Two years after they met, surrounded by the ones they loved most, Brandt and his Bay married in a touching private ceremony. Little did Brandt and Baylor know that that day, one filled with such happiness, promise and love, would also be a day so heartbreakingly, horrifically and tragically life-altering for all of them.

“My heart was bleeding a pain that no one could ever explain.”

Unfortunately for Brandt and his Bay, the aftermath of their wedding was but the first stop on their tragedy train ride. Fate had more pain in store for them, so much more that, frankly, it left me breathless. But through all of this pain, through all of this tragedy, the one constant force that held them up and together was the love that Brandt and Baylor had for each other. That love fed their strength and their wills to move forward.

“From loving you, Bay. It all comes from loving you.”

This was one hell of a long and painful road these two had to travel to get to their happily ever after. The thing is, while it was painful and difficult to read at times, it was honest and real and yet still had this undercurrent of hope and love running through it. Brandt never wavered in his love of and devotion to Baylor, and even while she was so immersed in her pain and the all-consuming darkness she felt, the one thing – the only thing – she knew was that she loved him, and she clung to that love with both hands.

“…fate has it’s own plans and failed to ask us what we thought.”

This book is an epic journey of the promise of real soul deep love, loss, healing and, finally, redemption. It is one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. I started this book warily and with a very heavy heart, I just knew I was in for a deep and heavy read and I wasn’t sure I was up for it. I finished it with a much lighter heart, one full of hope and reminded of the beauty of true love. It’s an amazing experience when an author can make her readers feel so deeply and honestly, it’s a rare gift and the mark of true talent. This book was so well written, so richly developed and the characters and their stories so remarkable, it has earned 5 smooches from me!

I just happened upon this book on Netgalley and decided to give it a go. I liked the cover and the synopsis sounded like a book that I would enjoy. I am really glad that I gave this author a chance. I really liked this first book in a series based in South Carolina.

I do like books based in SC because it is my home state and I thought that Kate did a beautiful job of portraying a gorgeous state that is dear to my heart. I also really enjoyed the premise of this story. Annie has been sheltered her entire life by her brothers and father but now that she is away at school she wants to do it up. So her and her crazy and sweet college roomie make a list of all the things she would like to do now that she is free.

While Annie is trying to complete her “list” she runs into all kinds of trouble. The kind of trouble that happens when your a teenager out on your own for the first time. The kind of trouble that is THE LOVE TRIANGLE kind. I do adore me a love triangle because I love angst and this book had plenty of it. It is also why I love these college romances. Because let’s face it, we make the poorest decisions of our life at this age, but we have a hell of a time doing it. 😉 Annie sure does. I knew right away who Annie needed to pick but of course she, Ryan and Chris all make their share of bad choices that lead to more bad choices and even worse consequences.

If you are a fan of NA books then this is definitely something I would recommend. I really enjoyed it and I am really excited about the future books in this series. I loved the side characters just as much as the main ones and I think these books are just going to get better and better. Cannot wait!
