There’s a romantic notion that if the person you love dies, you’ll somehow feel it. You’ll feel the connection sever as the other half of your soul is ripped from you. But I didn’t feel anything when Lily died. Nothing. I should have felt something, shouldn’t I? Like the tether she holds around my heart snapping or a surge of electrical current when the connection between us was lost? Something. But there was no warning. As I drove to my flat, there was no sign of the devastation waiting for me. Nothing to prepare me for the reality that my heart was about to be irrevocably shattered. Even if I had felt something, it couldn’t have prepared me for this.

It all seems unreal. Lily can’t be dead. Despite the numerous times I lectured her about the danger she was in, I never truly believed I’d lose her. I thought as long as she was with me, she’d be safe. What a fool I was.

Time’s come to a standstill. I’m frozen whilst people move all around me. A constant squawk of radios echoes in the hall. Police officers and firemen hustle in and out of my flat, moving with such purpose. Tasks to complete. Because this is just a job to them. Just another murder scene. One of many. They take notes, collect samples, snap pictures. When it’s over, they’ll go home, or to the pub, and the horrors they saw here will eventually fade away.

Not for me. My anguish from this day will never fade. It will fester inside me, trapping me in eternal misery. Since I’m perishing in hell, I’m going to make sure the bastards who did this to her perish right along with me. I’m certain vengeance crosses the minds of most people who have lost someone to such senseless acts of violence, but I know this isn’t just a passing stage of grief that will wane with time. Cartels like Morelia survive because they know how to work the system. Blackmail, extortion, and bribery make them untouchable by authorities. The only way I’ll get justice for Lily is if I annihilate them myself, and unlike most people, I have the resources and connections to make it happen.

About When Fates Align:

When Fates Align-FINAL-high (1)

Why would fate bring them together only to tear them apart?

Lily and Gavin were brought together in a clash of tragedy and chaos. Amid the ashes of lives gone wrong, they thought they found a second chance at love. With trouble from their previous lives lurking around every corner, they quickly learned that love from a star-crossed romance isn’t enough to survive.

Lily has slipped through Gavin’s fingers, and he feels as though he’s been sentenced to an eternity in hell. But if he’s going to perish in the ninth circle, everyone responsible for coming between him and Lily will go down with him.

Perhaps their love was never meant to be. But, if he’s learned anything from his time with Lily, it’s that sometimes everything has to crash and burn before life can begin again.

Synopsis

Strong. Arrogant. Hard.
Ryder Cole is the King of Atlanta’s nightlife — and the one man who can erase my past.

I’m running from secrets that could destroy me and there’s no room in my life for someone like him: too damn cocky, and sexy as hell. I should keep my distance, but smart goes out the window the minute he looks my way. And when he puts his hands on me … A girl could forget her own name.

But what happens when the past catches up with me, and all the things I’m hiding from tear our lives apart again? I can’t keep running forever, and Ryder always wins.

He’s not the kind of guy to let me go gently, Ryder will give it to me Hard.

Review

I love getting excited over a brand spanking new series and that is exactly what I am over Eve Jagger’s Sexy Bastard series and what a feakin’ fantastic title. The first book Hard, sees nightclub and underground fight club entrepreneur Ryder Cole clash with Cassie McEntire over her brothers unsettled debts towards Ryder, a problem that is soon rectified by Cassie offering to work as the accountant for Ryder’s nightclub business but that is also more complicated as the sexual tension and innuendo flares between the two.

The initial surprise meeting between Ryder and Cassie was crafted to perfection, it was downright hilarious and executed to its full potential and what made it such a great comedic element was Eve’s use of snappy dialogue between her characters, the bantering and one-up-manship, trying to verbally trounce the other as well as communicate the simmering heat and attraction between the two sparring leads and this is something that is consistently entertaining the whole way through the book. It makes great use of that old adage that there’s a fine line between love and hate.

‘He approaches, bends toward me, putting his hands on either side of my hips. “Promise me one more thing.” he says. His lips almost brush my ear, the proximity a tease, like a ghost of a kiss. “That the next time you try to suffocate me, you’ll use your thighs instead of a pillow. It’s be a much more pleasant experience for us both.”

Ryder is utterly flawless. Even when he’s being an arse and saying the wrong thing you just know that wasn’t how he intended it to sound and when he admits he’s wrong the man knows how to apologise, there’s no dragging out the misunderstanding for longer than necessary. He’s gorgeous, fairly humble for being so filthy rich and he has a terrific dry sense of humour. I need Ryder off the page and in my life NOW please. Cassie is the type of female protagonist I love to read about, she has a serious amount of sass, sarcasm and spirit in her but has an abundance of compassion and loyalty especially when it comes to family. Eve Jagger managed to take a fantastic flirty and fun story and add an element of danger and realism to it to in the form of domestic abuse, something she accomplishes with sensitivity and aplomb and what makes Cassie an even more heroic figure in my eyes is the fact that she never concedes or admits defeat when threatened, she’s strong and just the type of girl you could be friends with in real life.

Hard is the start of a brilliant new series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next bachelor! The writing flows with fun and drama in equal measure bringing in side characters to the fold and creating a fantastic group dynamic between the girls and the boys and paving the way for further stories. The only small problem I had was the abrupt ending. I feel like it needed an extra chapter or an epilogue to tie up all the loose ends for Ryder and Cassie’s happily ever after.

Synopsis

Gray doesn’t make friends with women. He has sex with them. Until Ivy.

The last thing star tight-end Gray Grayson wants to do is drive his agent’s daughter’s bubblegum pink car. But he needs the wheels and she’s studying abroad. Something he explains when she sends him an irate text to let him know exactly how much pain she’ll put him in if he crashes her beloved ride. Before he knows it, Ivy Mackenzie has become his best texting bud. But then Ivy comes home and everything goes haywire. Because the only thing Gray can think of is being with Ivy.

Ivy doesn’t have sex with friends. Especially not with a certain football player. No matter how hot he makes her…

Gray drives Ivy crazy. He’s irreverent, sex on a stick, and completely off limits. Because, Ivy has one golden rule: never get involved with one of her father’s clients. A rule that’s proving harder to keep now that Gray is doing his best to seduce her. Her best friend is fast becoming the most irresistible guy she’s ever met.

Which means Gray is going to have to use all his skills to get himself out of the friend zone and into Ivy’s heart. Game on

Review

The Friend Zone is the second book in the Game On series by Kristen Callihan.  I absolutely fell in love with the The Hook Up and it was one of my top reads of 2014.  To say that I have been impatiently waiting on The Friend Zone is a complete understatement and if I ever meet Kristen lets hope she knows what is good for her and runs like hell.  Because I am seriously going to kidnap this woman and make her write for me all day long forever and ever because I am completely obsessed with her witty, intelligent, and sexy as all freaking get out writing.

Did I sexy?  Because the sexy as shit o’meter was off the damn charts in The Friend Zone.  I have read a lot of ridiculously sexy books but the way Kristen writes, man I just dunno.  She is a gosh darn sexy writing time virtuoso because Gray and Ivy are literally just kissing and my face feels like it is on fire and I find myself damn near panting.  Just smoking hot!

“I’ve want this..  Wanted to taste you for so long.  It’s all I think about.  Fuck, that’s good.  One more, honey.  One more.”

But let us talk a little about the plot of this seriously amazing book.  I do love me a good friends to lovers romance and this one takes the cake.  Ivy and Gray meet through a series of funny, snarky, and sweet texts that blooms into a really beautiful and meaningful friendship.  When they finally get to meet face to face I found myself smiling so hard because these two sweet people had me rooting for them from “shenanigans”.

“I’ve just officially met Ivy Mackenzie, and I realize I’ve missed her for what seems like years.”

But you gotta have some angst and you just know that sexy football player Gray is a big time player and has never “best friended” a girl before and Ivy is a good girl and Gray only wants to do right by her but their attraction is off the charts and he cannot seem to stay away.  Will he risk their amazing friendship to pursue a relationship with his bestie?

“Best buds.  Which is both a gift and a curse.”

Sigh.  Kristen Callihan can also write the heck out of a book boyfriend.  Somehow they manage to come off alpha and incredibly kind and sweet.  Her men are all kinds of swoon worthy and Gray was the best of the best.  This sweet man brought me to tears with his kindness more than once.  He is just the type of book boyfriend you want to hug.

“Every inch, Ivy.”

And Ivy, well she is just as amazing.  Ivy is one of the heroines you envy because she won’t settle for less than she deserves and she also knows how to take care of her man and I am not talking about in the sexual way;  in a beautiful meaningful way that Gray needs.

“That’s my job now, Gray.  I’m always going to be the one there for you.”

So, basically what I am saying is that this book is damn near perfect.  The writing is smart.  The characters are so lovable.  The plot is angsty in that special kind of NA way.  And the humor was hilarious and took this book to a whole other level for me.

“I’m pretty sure his butt should be cast in bronze and immortalized for posterity.”

I loved this one just as much as the first book in this series.  So what are you waiting for?  Seriously, that cover should have you running to one-click right away anyways!

Synopsis

“Just let yourself fall for me.”

Melanie Kincaid is a trust-fund baby with a knack for sassy comebacks and unnecessarily complicating her privileged life. So, of course, she would have to fall in love with a man she can’t have.
Jameson Hayes is a NYC firefighter for Manhattan’s oldest ladder company. He has big shoes to fill and a city to protect. He’s strong, sexy, and not looking for the complications Melanie brings. But he can’t stay away from her either. The attraction between them is immediate, and the pull is crazy powerful. But she’s only home for the summer and long-distance relationships never work.
Unfortunately, Melanie’s beauty and smart mouth are a lethal combination and Jameson isn’t the only Hayes who’s interested. As if his brother isn’t enough to compete with, now the city’s most famous arsonist wants to claim her as his next prize. Jameson can’t stand to watch Melanie get hurt and she can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble.

Fall for Me is the first Ladder Company novel, a stand-alone companion series about New York’s most elite firefighting family with hot alpha heroes, snarky heroines, and an arsonist hell-bent on destruction.

Review

If you love firefighter romances then you’ll love this. I love the TV shows Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D so I was excited to read this. Hot firefighter? Yes. Please. Melanie Kincaid comes from a privileged family and is more than used to getting what she wants. Jameson Hayes follows in a long line of hard working family members. They have always worked hard for what they want and where they are now.  But it seems neither Melanie or Jameson can have what they want no matter how much they want it.

“…but I want you to fall for me.  I want to be what keeps you up at night and what puts a smile on your face in the morning.”

This review is hard to do because I don’t want to give anything away that could ruin the story for anyone. I’ll start off with why I gave it 3.5 smooches- the only reason I did is because I personally didn’t connect with it, there was something missing for me I can’t explain it and I was frustrated at myself because I really wanted to. Saying that though the story was pretty good. Melanie and Jameson have a really strong pull that they can’t help it and at times they don’t want to but either way its there and the chemistry between them is hot when they are together. Jameson has some complications in his life and Melanie not used to not getting what she wants doesn’t always make the best decisions but you forgive her because you can’t help but love her sassy and funny personality. “Seriously though.  Penises are weird.  They’re all cylindrical and they have a mushroom head. Weird.” Some situations in the book you may not like- but keep in mind its not always how it seems. There is also the angst and danger of the job they are in and how it effects everyone. I also loved the friendships and relationships that grew within both Melanie and Jameson’s families and regardless of not connecting with this one as much as I’d like to I can’t wait for the next one to get more of the Hayes’ brothers.  ~Jade

Synopsis

With a famous NHL player for a stepbrother, Violet Hall is well acquainted with the playboy reputation of many a hockey star. She isn’t interested in legendary team captain Alex Waters or his pretty, beat-up face and rock-hard six-pack abs. When Alex inadvertently obliterates Violet’s misapprehension regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players, he becomes much more than just a hot body with the face to match.

Suffering from a complete lapse in judgment, Violet discovers just how good Alex is with the hockey stick in his pants. Violet believes her night of orgasmic magic with Alex is just that: one night. But Alex starts to call. And text. And email and send extravagant–and quirky–gifts. Suddenly, he’s too difficult to ignore, and nearly impossible not to like.

The problem is, the media portrays Alex as a total player, and Violet doesn’t want to be part of the game.

Excerpt

I pull my sweater over my head, not accounting for static, and my T-shirt sticks to the

woolly outer-layer. Face covered with fabric, I scramble to pull the shirt into place. The silence

at the table is telling. Once I wrestle free of the sweater, I’m met with a number of wide eyes

focused on my chest. I look down. Right. My bra is visible through the pale pink cotton, and now

everyone at this table, including Buck, has seen it unfiltered by the shirt.

Buck leans in and whispers, “Put the sweater back on.”

I play dumb. “Why?”

“Everyone can see—” He motions toward my chest without looking.

I wave him off. “It’s not that obvious.” It’s totally that obvious.

He shoots me one of his glares. It’s meant to be threatening, but it makes him look

constipated. I leave the sweater off to irritate him. It’s effective. His face turns an interesting

shade of red.

“I need another beer.” He slams his mug on the table and eyes me as he gets up and goes

to the bar, despite the half-full pitcher of beer on the table.

I’m about to put the sweater on again when Waters turns to me.

“Hi, I’m Alex.” He’s all pretty smile and white teeth. They’re probably fake. Those eyes

are something else, though, even if he is sporting the makings of a black eye. I try hard not to

look directly at him, afraid I’ll be ensnared by his rugged, handsome face.

“I’m Violet.”

“I didn’t realize Butterson had a sister.”

Even his voice is familiar, satin smooth and deep. He takes a sip of his drink, leaving

behind a milk mustache he quickly wipes away. It’s then I realize where I recognize him from:

the milk advertisements. Sweet Lord, I’ve been jilling off to him. My mortification reaches new

heights, causing me to say something more insane than usual.

“I’m his stepsister. He likes to keep me a secret since he wants to go all Ophelia on my

ass.” My eyes widen at my terrible joke. Though, if he’s anything like Buck, he won’t get the

reference.

“Butterson would make a crap nun, eh?”

I swear he’s made an accurate reference to Shakespeare. Stunned, I make direct eye

contact. Or I try to. His eyes keep bouncing between my chest and my face, so that’s a challenge.

Normally, I’d be put out by his blatant ogling, but I’ve asked for it with the sheer shirt

and the ostentatious bra.

I further my own embarrassment and his by cupping my breasts and squeezing. “They’re

nice for real ones, huh?”

His eyes shoot to mine. Busted.

“I uh—I didn’t mean to—I wasn’t—”

This is one of the most entertaining interactions I’ve had with a member of the opposite

sex in ages. I make a snicker-snort noise and look away.

Buck leans against the bar, talking to a girl whose skirt is so short it’s abundantly clear

she’s not wearing underwear. I nudge Alex with my elbow. His arm is like a rock. “Check out

Buck’s friend.”

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Cooter-flasher leans forward and gives our table an

even better view.

“Is that—am I looking at her beaver?”

Mid-swig, I choke on the mouthful of beer, sputtering and coughing. After I recover, I

ask jokingly, “‘Beaver’? Are you Canadian or something?”

Those vibrant eyes move to mine. God, he’s awfully pretty. And close. He’s really close.

Likes inches away, rock arm brushing mine close. I can even smell his cologne or

deodorant—whatever it is, he smells yummy.

He’s silent for what seems like a long time. Or maybe it’s because I’m staring. Or the

question may have stumped him.

My experiences with Buck—and the one hockey player I dated previously—have led me

to the assertion that hockey players aren’t notoriously intelligent. I’m aware this isn’t a universal

truth. But Buck certainly reinforces my perceived stereotype: he’s definitely not a rocket

scientist. He’s not even a rocket scientist’s assistant. However, I’m almost positive Alex made a

literary pun a moment ago. Waters could very well be an unexpected anomaly. I’m intrigued.

“Yeah, I’m Canadian.”

“Does everyone in Canada call pussies beavers? Like the Brits call them fannies?” I can’t

believe I ask him this. I’m barely buzzed; otherwise, I’d blame it on drunkenness.

He blinks a few times. “Did you say ‘pussy’?”

It’s possible his helmet wasn’t up to code and he sustained a head injury during the fight.

There’s a sweet bruise on the side of his chiseled jaw. His nose is crooked with a decent bump

from what I imagine could be multiple breaks. It’s not ugly, though. It’s sexy, in an I-fuck-

people-up way.

“No, I said ‘pussies,’ plural, as in more than one.” I’m making a complete ass out of

myself.

To avoid saying something worse, I excuse myself so I can pretend to smoke. I grab my

bag and sweater and leave the beer. Based on the crap coming out of my mouth, I don’t need to

add any fuel to that fire.

Buck grabs my arm as I pass him. “Hey, what’s with you and Waters?”

Alex is shrugging into his jacket. Maybe he’s leaving. Too bad; he was fun to talk to and

nice to look at.

I sigh with irritation. “It’s common courtesy to strike up a conversation with the person

sitting next to you, or did you miss the rules of social etiquette in kindergarten?”

“Rules of what?”

“Never mind. What else am I supposed to do? Ignore him? I was being polite.” And Alex

is entertaining.

“Yeah, well, I don’t know these guys that well yet and he’s got a rep. Be careful who you

get friendly with.”

“I wasn’t giving him a handy under the table. We were talking. I’m going for a smoke.”

Leaving him with the Beave, I head for the door. The temperature has dropped in the past

half hour, so I pull on my sweater. Finding my smokes, I pop one between my lips and search for

my lighter. I can’t find it anywhere.

“Need a light?” I pull my head out of my purse to find Waters holding a pack of matches.

“Are you following me?”

He shrugs and gives me a grin that could obliterate my panties. If I were dumb enough to

allow myself to be affected in such a way. I’m not. Mostly.

“I thought you might like some company.” He flips open the matchbook and tears one

I purse the cigarette between my lips. Alex strikes the match and curves his palm to

protect the flame. He watches while I inhale, the embers burning orange as I take a shallow drag

and cough.

“Shit!” Tears spring to my eye as I eye toke the smoke. Swearing like a sailor, I cover my

eye with my palm.

“You’ve got a dirty mouth, eh?”

“Only when I try and smoke with my eyeball,” I say between coughs.

Alex tosses the matches on a table and pats my back until I stop hacking up a lung.

“Butterson doesn’t seem too happy.”

Through the window I spot Buck and the Beave. She’s not pulling the selfie business, so

he doesn’t seem to mind her hanging off his arm while he glares in our direction. He’s being a

colossal douche tonight.

“Screw Buck.” I take a fake drag of my cigarette.

Dimples appear in Alex’s cheeks as I exhale a cloud of smoke and choke back another

cough.

“Do you even smoke?”

I debate lying and decide against it. “Not really. I do it as a way to escape awkward social

situations.”

“So you came out here to get away from me?”

“Not you in particular.”

His tongue peeks out to sweep across his bottom lip. He’s got a nice mouth, even with the

split in the corner. Remembering the way he took out the Atlanta guy makes me warm all over.

Thoughts such as these are bound to get me into trouble. Hockey players are bad news.

Especially ones as hot as he is.

He’s looking at me expectantly. Dammit. He must have asked a question. My mind is

wandering like a squirrel on Red Bull.

“Sorry, what?” I flick the ash on my cigarette.

“You were reading during the game—what book?” He sounds genuinely curious and a

little offended.

“Tom Jones. I have to finish it for my book club on Tuesday.”

Wow. Do I ever sound like a winner. He must have been watching me while he was in

the time-out box.

“Fielding at a hockey game? Kind of cerebral with beer and violence, isn’t it?”

I blink as if I’ve been high beamed with a flashlight. Alex knows who wrote Tom Jones,

and he’s used the word cerebral in the appropriate context. I was right; he did get my

Shakespeare reference. Alex Waters has singlehandedly obliterated my misapprehension

regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players—with one sentence. In doing so, he’s become

infinitely hotter than he was five seconds ago.

“You’ve read Fielding?” I take a step closer. My voice is low, as if I’ve switched into

phone-sex operator mode.

“I-I-I—”

It’s adorable. He’s wearing an expression I’m familiar with: panic merged with fear. I

sport the same one when I inadvertently revealed my extreme nerdiness. Most nights I would

much rather be at home curled up with a book or playing solitaire than out at a bar. Hence the

excessive beer consumption and the fake smoking crutch.

“I think literacy is sexy,” I whisper.

“Me, too.” His dimples make an appearance.

I have one of those rare moments where my brain fritzes and I do something completely

out of character. It’s so outside of my personal code of conduct that I’ll probably relive the

incident over and over trying to figure out what flipped the switch. For the time being, I’m

blaming the beers, jetlag, and his accurate literary references.

I grab Waters by the shirt and pull his face to mine.

His mouth is soft and warm. The stubble on his chin scratches my skin, and I like it. I

shove my tongue into his mouth. Well, that’s not true. I slide it across his bottom lip, touching

the barely healed split, and he parts for me. Soft, warm, and wet meet more soft, warm, and wet.

He tastes like chocolate and, more faintly, coffee liqueur.

His hand runs a hot trail along my side, and he pulls me tight against him. He’s all hard

edges and heat, and I can feel . . . holy . . . there’s a massive bulge pressed against my stomach.

After far too short a time, he breaks the kiss, trailing his lips across my cheek to my ear.

“Do you want to get out of here?”

“Buck will kill you.”

“I can take him.”

Synopsis

With a famous NHL player for a step-brother, Violet Hall is well acquainted with the playboy reputation many hockey stars come with. She’s smart enough to steer clear of those hot, well-built boys with unparalleled stamina. That is until she meets the legendary team captain—Alex Waters.

Violet isn’t interested in his pretty, beat-up face, or his rock-hard six-pack abs. But when Alex inadvertently obliterates Violet’s previous misapprehension regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players, he becomes more than just a hot body with a face to match.

In what can only be considered a complete lapse in judgment, Violet finds out just how good Alex is with the hockey stick in his pants. But what starts out as a one-night stand, quickly turns into something more. Post-night of orgasmic magic, Alex starts to call, and text, and e-mail and send extravagant—and quirky—gifts, making him difficult to ignore, and even more difficult not to like.

The problem is, the media portrays Alex as a total player, and Violet doesn’t want to be part of the game.

Review

Sexy, silly, sweet and a tad sinful Pucked was a great read for a Saturday afternoon.  Let’s first talk about the cover-gasm I had when I saw that HOT cover. I am a sucker for a Hockey book and devour them often so when I saw that cover I knew I would need to read this book.

I honestly had no idea what I was getting into with this book and was surprised at how much I fell for sweet and somewhat nerdy Alex.  Typically hockey books are full of alpha males who I love but Alex was very different. A math geek who used to also figure skate he was different than most sports heroes and I found him very refreshing.

Violet knows what hockey players are like seeing as she comes from a sports family. Her dad is a sports agent and her step-brother is Alex’s teammate but when she meets Alex all bets are off. He is all kinds  of hot and is so scorching in the bedroom that no matter how much her brain says run she can’t. The main trouble comes from the fact that Alex has a playboy reputation and her brother does not want them together.

Pucked was honest to god hilarious. Not something I am used to in hockey books but it is something that helped it stand out as a fresh take on a sports romance. A tad crude at times Violet and Alex had a quick wit and a smart banter.  Violet has ZERO filter which made for many awkward yet funny moments.

Helena Hunting is a great writer and I always enjoy the stories she tells. Written in first person, Pucked was an easy and fun read that helped cement her as a writer you won’t want to miss.
