EXCERPT:

Ian

The worst part about training mode was the no-pussy rule.

My intense training schedule, brutal workouts, and strict diet were nothing compared to the hell of not being able to satisfy my needy cock. I had a fight in less than a week, which meant I wasn’t going to see any action anytime soon, and the beautiful girl bouncing before me pushed every button I had. Pornographic thoughts ripped through my brain, making it difficult to concentrate on anything but the pulse throbbing in my erection.

A one-way mirror in the office faced the gym’s solitary treadmill. I’d come in to grab a drink from the mini fridge and was in the office when MacKenzie arrived, so when she jumped on the treadmill for her morning run, I figured I might as well sit for a minute and take in the view. But it was such a fucking cocktease, I wanted to punch someone.

Her body was a twelve out of ten. My dick was telling me to pull her hot ass off the treadmill, take her in the shower, spread her legs, and give her the best fuck she’d ever had.

MacKenzie was a treat for all the senses. From the breathy gasps of exertion pushing past her parted lips, to the rhythmic way her tits bounced, and the delectable feminine scent of deodorant and sweat I could smell whenever I was stupid enough to wander near her.

Though it wasn’t just about her fantastic tits and perfect ass. She had those in spades, but there was more to her. I could see it in her now. When most people went for a run, their faces relaxed and their eyes became unfocused as they zoned out. Their body might be running, but their mind was somewhere else as they bobbed along to their music.

When Kenzie ran, it wasn’t just her body in motion. Behind her gentle expression was a sense of determination. Initially I thought she was running away from something, but there was no fear in her eyes, only clarity of purpose. No, she wasn’t running from anything, she was running toward something.

Strength and determination in a woman were sexy as hell. I added those attributes to the list of things I liked about this girl, as if there weren’t enough already. I loved watching her push forward. Her confidence and her zing, combined with her…

Well, combined with her amazing tits. Perky and palm-sized, they were perfect. I couldn’t stop watching them bounce as she ran, the same way they would bounce if she rode me. Who invented one-way mirrors? I could fucking kiss them.

But I’d had my chance with her, and I screwed it up. Now she wouldn’t give me the time of day.

So this was all I could do—sit and watch from afar. Or nearby, now that she worked at the gym I trained in every single day. I should have switched gyms when she started working here, but all my fights were set up through the owner, Chris. Besides, Chris had worked hard to get me where I was today. Leaving him now that I was finally on the verge of breaking through would be a dick move.

So I was stuck. Who could dream up a more frustrating hell?

Hard To Love:

10

Cade’s always taken risks…

Cade takes cares of his sick younger sister by doing what he does best–cage fighting and starring in adult movies, his newest harebrained moneymaking scheme designed to pay for his sister’s growing medical bills. But when his latest gig finds him admitted to the ER sporting an erection from hell, thanks to the little pill given to him by the director, he can’t get the pretty little nurse who treated him out of his head, even though he knows she’s so far out of his league it should be illegal.

Alexa’s always played it safe…

Tired of being pigeonholed as the sweet, innocent one, hardworking nursing student Alexa has been looking for ways to break out of her Goody Two-shoes image. When her friend suggests the outlandish idea of losing her virginity to the sexy and sure-to-be-skilled porn star, Alexa is mortified. But then when Cade refuses her proposition, she finds herself pissed off and embarrassed. When she tracks him down to give him a piece of her mind, she isn’t prepared for what she finds. Watching him care for his little sister tugs at her heart, and suddenly it’s no longer just about losing her virginity, but about helping Cade. Because Lord help her, she might actually be falling for a porn star…

Review

I have not had a chance to read the first book in this series, Hard to Love, so I pretty much went into this one blind and I have to say it read like a complete standalone and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything pertinent to Ian and Kenzie’s story.  So feel free to pick this one up even if you haven’t read the first one.  Although, I will definitely be going back and reading Hard to Love since I did really enjoy Reckless Love and I do adore Kendall’s writing.

Ian and Kenzie’s story was pretty good.  It had a good bit of steam, a lot of jealousy, a heaping ton of denial, and some action on the side.  Ian doesn’t have sex before a big fight.  Myth or not, it works for him.  Things get turned up with MacKenzie one night at a bar but after some heavy petting Ian turns her down.  Kenzie still wants him but she is mad as sin at being led on and Ian definitely still wants her but now Kenzie seems to be dating a good friend of his.  This story was kind of love triangly! (yeah, I made a word)  but not REALLY.  Haha!  I loved Kenzie and Ian.  They were funny and sweet and super sexy!

“So?  I was drunk.  Everyone’s amazing when I’m drunk.”

Kendall is getting to be one of my favorite go to authors when I need a good romantic story that has a good bit of angst but it isn’t saturated in it.  I do love her writing style and wit and I cannot wait for more from here.  I am excited to see what is coming next!

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife; even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Review

“You were right. I don’t know you at all. You aren’t the girl I thought you were. That girl wouldn’t do something this fucked up.”

Do you ever just get so eager to read something that you abandon your current book just to jump straight into the new one? That was how I felt when Hardcore Vol 3 showed up on my kindle! I have been eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this story ever since I first took a chance on an author I had never read before and I am so glad I did. The Hardcore series is a gripping and raw look into the inner city youth and what is needed to just to survive. Finding love in a place where survival is the mission can be hard . . .but not impossible.

“I trust Jace about as much as I trust a pissed off koala bear.”  “Koala Bears are adorable.”  “No, they’re rapey assholes cracked out on eucalyptus, and will eat your face off.”   “Oh, Well, that definitely sounds a lot more like Jace.”

The drama is at a pentacle in this third and final installment in this series. While Cory’s conscience is clearing a bit after coming clean with the lies and deceit her heart is breaking with the rejection Van deservingly throws at her. She knows she deserves all that is happening but that does not make it hurt less. While I loved watching the story of Van and Cory unfold the  high point of this story for me was seeing Jade finally start to get what is coming to her. She is a conniving bitch and I hated her from the moment I met her. Cory has grown so much in just the short span on these 3 books. She has always been a bit selfless, in how she takes care of Jill, but now as she falls in love and sees all that there is to lose she even starts to reconsider the way she has gone about everything.

“He made me feel connected and grounded when I’ve spent my whole life running away. As unstable as my life’s been, he just showed me how to be  . . . I don’t know. More.”

Staci does a fantastic job of delivering a story with characters that make you feel, men that make you wet and action that makes your heart race! While I am sad to close the book (lol I love a pun) on Jade and Van I am excited to see what Staci has in store for us next!

Just one more can’t hurt…right?

Re-belle-ious, free-spirited Lauren Renwick has decided it’s time to trade her wings for roots. That means no more bad boys, no more foolish choices. Yet when she’s stood up on New Year’s Eve, her resolution to stick to her Mama’s Rules for Dating weakens. Especially when she spots sex-in-leather-and-tattoos, Jackson Sullivan.

One look at Lauren, and Jackson is hell-bent on getting her on the back of his Harley and riding straight for his bed. Their night together is an erotic rush that has a new word popping up on his horizon—forever.

Lauren tries to convince herself he’s just one last fling to get bad boys out of her system, yet she finds herself falling hard and fast for a man with a stalker ex and a meddling Irish family. Plus, he has zero chance of passing her uptight parents’ inspection.

Jackson has Lauren’s back, but if she wants all of his heart, she’ll have to meet him halfway—by ditching rules that hold her prisoner, and learning to stand up for what she really wants.

Warning: Contains several highly practical rules for dating—all of which will be broken in the most wicked ways possible, thanks to a domineering alpha male who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after it…rules be damned.

Born in California and raised in South Florida, I’ve moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on my head ever since. Along the way, I worked as a community organizer, a professional matchmaker, a popular blogger, and a crisis counselor (to name a few). All the while, longing to have the guts to do what I really wanted: to write and become a published author. That wish has finally come true and I feel like a karmic cloud has been lifted off my head. Those of you who have also taken a circuitous route in trying to find their path get me – I can tell.

What else? Hmm… I love indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl, wearing black because it’s slimming, the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to me laugh ’til they snort. I’m a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but have now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia, with my awesome and patient husband and two kick-ass girls.

Excerpt

By the pool table were a bunch of rough-as-leather motorcycle riders, getting loud and throwing down bets on the pool table. There were more than a couple of hookups going on in the darkened corners with the occasional flash of flesh making an appearance. Even though I was surprised by the blatant PDA, I also couldn’t help but envy them. At least they had someone worth sweating with on New Year’s Eve.

I straightened my dress and glanced up, only to find the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen walking straight toward me. His gaze was intense, and he was tall with broad shoulders that ate up the space around him as he moved. His hair was jet black and even with the poor lighting, I could tell it was glossy like silk. I liked that it wasn’t too long or too short, and it had this sexy, messy way about it, like he just rolled out of bed after having mind-blowing sex. I couldn’t tell the color of his eyes, but I could still determine he had an amazing mouth and a rugged face. Pure masculine beauty, wearing faded blue jeans, a henley shirt that was snug enough to highlight his muscular frame, and well-worn motorcycle boots.

Bad-boy sex on legs.

Exactly the kind of man I was trying to avoid those days.

He was totally gorgeous and definitely intense, with the way he stared at me like a gazelle on an open plain that was seconds away from being devoured. Nothing was distracting him from getting from across the room right to me.

As he approached where I was seated, he gave the bartender a quick chin lift. The bartender reciprocated the manly greeting, poured a finger of whiskey in a glass and handed it to him. I noticed that even when Mr. Sex on Legs reached for his drink, he did it without taking his eyes off me for a second.

“Hey,” he said with a voice as rough as gravel. “What’s your name?”

Oh sweet Jesus, don’t tempt me with a rough-and-ready biker god who is on a well-acquainted, knows-my-drink-without-asking basis with the bartender. Bad enough he exuded sex and sin, which was my weakness. Definitely didn’t need a man with Johnny Walker or Jim Beam riding on his back.

I gave him a perfunctory glance. “Doesn’t matter my name. I’m not staying here long enough for us to get acquainted.”

Two of his fingers propped my chin up, forcing me to look at him. Damn it, he really was the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. He had blue eyes. No, not just blue eyes, but go-on-vacation-and-do-laps-in-the-warm-Caribbean-Ocean blue eyes. And those eyes were scalding hot on me, burning me whole. And I knew that look. It meant I needed to get out of there, fast, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to escape the smoldering, hot-guy tractor beam that was pulling me in.

“Listen.” I sighed, trying my hardest to pretend he had no effect on me. I backed my chin away from his hand. “You are definitely a scrumptious treat, but I’m not sampling tonight, if you get my meaning. Nothing personal.”

He threw his head back and laughed loud and deep, the vibration humming through my body.

“Fuckin’ gorgeous and funny. Makes it even better.”

“Um.” I stalled, feeling confused. “Makes what better?”

He looked at me as if the answer were obvious. “The promise of you, babe.”

He took a sip of his drink and waited patiently for my response, which I couldn’t give him, wouldn’t give him, because the last thing I wanted was for him to hear in my shaky voice how his eyes, his words, his smoldering looks were affecting me, making me flush all over. Like a goddamn schoolgirl.

His were not the only eyes on me. I could feel a different kind of heat, the fury of women who wanted me dead. Across the room a bunch of them were seated at some of the rounds and in the booths, and they’d been watching us intently ever since he crossed the room to me.

“Wouldn’t one of your biker babes—” I pointed over to the herd with my chin, “—be a better bet to score with before midnight? They certainly seem…anxious that you’re over here.”

He smirked, his gaze traveling from my eyes to my mouth and back. “That’s like shooting fish in a barrel. No fun in that.”

“I get the feeling they think you belong to them. And the way the barkeep knows your drink tells me you’ve hung out on these barstools way more than I’m comfortable with. Again, nothing personal, but I’m going to make sure this year is the year I start living right. And gorgeous?” I drawled while placing my hand on my hip. “You’ve got bad decision written all over you.”

I was so busy with my rant that I hadn’t really noticed that instead of getting angered or defeated, Mr. Sex on Legs was actually getting off on my attitude, and I knew that because the playful glimmer in his eye turned molten and dark.

He leaned toward me, coming close enough for me to catch the glorious musky scent that I knew was his alone. Suddenly I felt his warm hand at the nape of my neck, holding me firmly, with his thumb pressing into the pulse point on my throat.

“Gorgeous, funny and feisty. And feisty usually means sharp as a tack.” His fingers started caressing the back of my neck, and I bit my lip to quell the moan rising through me. He kept talking. “Although you’re wrong about the barfly assumption. I own this place, so it serves Robby here well to know my drink.” His hand came up, he threaded his fingers through my hair and his deep, rough voice ran through me, like liquid smoke and fire.

“Can’t imagine what sort of fucked-up happened to you tonight to end up here, but not gonna complain seeing as your bad luck will end up being real good for me.” His gaze slowly traveled the length of me. “So, darlin’, gonna tell me your name already?”

I knew this was my cue to tell him my name and offer some pithy response. But not only did I have nothing, I chickened out, muttered a quick apology and took off for the bathroom.

I did my business and splashed cold water on my heated face. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and leaned my palms and my weight against the porcelain sink, mortified to go back out there again. The only thing positive about my predicament was that the humiliation sobered me right up. Now all I had to do was go back, settle my tab and get the heck out of there.

Is that what you really want? a small voice inside me asked. I had to admit that I was curious about this man. He intrigued me, and I was glad to feel a hum under my skin and between my legs when I was with him. Certainly hadn’t felt anything close to that with Keith over the last several months.

I stood there and let my mind wander off, wondering if the skin on his fingers was smooth or calloused, hoping for the latter because I really liked the way rough hands and fingers felt against my silken, wet center.

Jesus, Lauren, panting much? Get. A. Grip.

I liked men, but it took more than a handsome face to get me this wound up. They had to be wicked smart and confident. Even though he seemed completely at home in his bar, there was something about him that seemed different, like there was more to him than being a reckless biker. Of course I had nothing to substantiate my hunch, but I couldn’t remember the last time I felt so drawn to someone on first sight. Maybe never before.

After I dried my hands and face, I opened the bathroom door, only to feel someone grab me by my upper arm and drag me off so fast, I didn’t realize what was happening. A side door opened and closed with me on the other side.

The room was dark, except for the moonlight coming in from a window on the other side. As soon as my eyes adjusted, I could see I was in a long and narrow room with some restaurant supplies. Standing in front of me was my blue-eyed troublemaker. Now, he was holding me by the arm and he was close. Very close.

Truth time? I loved the idea of this beautiful man coming after me. But I didn’t want him to see that, to know the effect he had on my mind and body.

He hadn’t earned it.

So I covered desire with insolence.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I barked at him, giving off as much attitude as I could muster, which wasn’t easy because being this close meant I caught his scent, and it was a mixture of musk and whisky. Pure man. Now I was even more lightheaded than before.

His mouth twitched, and I knew he’d caught me taking him in. “Babe, you know exactly what I’m doin’.” He stepped even more into my space. “Tell me your name, gorgeous. I’m not asking again.”

I took a step back and placed one hand on the wall behind me to steady myself. “Lauren,” I squeaked out. I cleared my throat and tried again. “I’m Lauren. And what’s your name?”

A ghost of a smile appeared and his velvet tongue slowly licked his bottom lip. “Plan on screaming my name out when I make you come for me?”

Holy shit. Did he just say that to me? My brain despised his arrogance, but my body ignited, making my skin burn hot. My heartbeat accelerated, beating out of my chest so loudly I wondered if he could hear it. I wanted him, badly, but I was embarrassed that he knew it. One look at his self-assured mug told me all I needed to know: he saw and he conquered and he never heard the word no. He didn’t even have to pretend to woo a woman—just grab her and take what he wanted.

And I was twenty-seven years old, with wonderful friends and a great job, but a shit track record when it came to men. Bad boys, like the one in front of me, may have known how to work my body, but they had also bruised my heart and soul. It was New Year’s Eve. Maybe my New Year’s resolution should have been no more men since I obviously didn’t know how to find a good one.

“Fine,” I grumbled. “I don’t need to know your name. In fact, I don’t need to know you.”

I ripped my arm out of his grasp and turned toward the door.

I was just about to place my hand on the doorknob when one of his steel arms surrounded my waist and pulled me to him.

“Don’t go yet, Lauren. Please.”

When I heard him say my name and his quiet plea, any trace of anger just melted away. My body relaxed against his and he moved my hair off my shoulder with his other hand, tucking a stray strand behind my ear. A flood of wet desire invaded the folds of my cleft when his soft lips grazed my skin, and then his mouth clasped on my earlobe. My nipples hardened, and my breath came out erratically. My body shivered because, somehow, this stranger knew exactly where to touch me to turn me on.

“Lauren,” he whispered. “We’re not done yet.”

“I should go, but…ohmygod, that feels really good,” I moaned, my body awakening from a deep sleep. I couldn’t remember the last time someone had ignited my desire so fast. Every sweep of his tongue on my skin burned me in the best possible way. I pressed my back to his front and shimmied my bottom against his jeans-clad erection. He sucked in a harsh breath, and I knew I was getting to him as much as he was getting to me.

“You know how I know we’re not done?” He practically growled against my skin. “Because I haven’t made you come yet. And Lauren, I really need to make you come.”

“I want…I need you to.” I was practically panting now. “Make me come.”

Then his right hand roughly hoisted up my dress and his fingers plunged into my underwear. They slid straight down and started playing with my clit, which was swollen with need and heat. And goddamn, he had calloused fingertips, creating the most delicious friction against my slick velvet core.

I gasped loudly as my head flew back, absorbing the trembling waves those circling fingers were making by touching me so perfectly. I let out a low moan and turned my head in his direction and he immediately seized my mouth with his, sucking me into him, devouring me with every pull of his lips.

“That’s it, baby,” he growled. “Fuck, you are so wet for me.”

He increased his pace, speaking into my ear in a low rumble.

“Noticed you the second you walked in here.” He plunged two fingers deep into me while circling my clit with his thumb. I let out a whimper that vibrated through me, and if he hadn’t been holding me up, my legs would have given way. “Heard you sassing my bartender, showing off your fucking gorgeous tits, walking around like you owned the place. And I knew I had to have me a taste.”

Just then he stopped rubbing and something between a cry and a mew escaped me. I opened my eyes in time to see him taking the two fingers that had just been inside me into his mouth, tasting my juices on his tongue. It was the hottest thing I’d ever seen.

Suddenly he turned me around to face him, lifting my dress again and tugging down my panties. My back was now against the door as he dropped to his knees in front of me and buried his face between my legs, rolling his tongue through my folds and sucking on my clit.

Mind-numbing pleasure radiated throughout my body, and I wove my fingers through his hair, which was just as soft and touchable as it had looked from far away. He pushed into me and lifted my legs off the floor and over his shoulders. His tongue flickered lightning hot and fast over my nub and my hips gyrated in response, as I lost all inhibition. His fingers clawed the cheeks of my ass as my hands fisted his hair. I was dancing right on the edge, so close to coming, and then he sucked hard on my clit, turning my low moans into a fevered scream of ecstasy. My orgasm crashed over me, sending me off the edge and into floating weightlessness.

Then he moved, placing my feet gently on the ground, and with that, the realization of what just happened ripped through my endorphin-filled haze. I had just let a complete stranger touch and taste me in the most intimate way possible. And I didn’t even know his name.

Review

I honestly don’t know any female reader out there that doesn’t appreciate the delectability of a tattooed, motorcycle riding bar-owner with a massive ego and a deliciously filthy talking mouth and I am no exception (don’t tell my mum that). In Rule Breaker that is exactly who Southern debutante Lauren ends up with unexpectedly one New Year’s evening, Jackson ‘I wanna taste you’ Sullivan.

This is a quick, easy read that will leave you fairly breathless and your head spinning. Everything happens very quickly, it’s an insta-lust book that progresses rapidly to love with a few obstacles threw in for good measure and some very sweet moments between our two leads and also some very feverish, explicit naughty moments too and let’s face it that’s exactly why us ladies love these quick erotic reads so much.

‘“Mr. and Mrs. Renwick, don’t you want better for Lauren, than to play by rules that only end up burying the stuff about her that’s most alive?”

If there was any doubt of hesitation before, in that moment it was vanquished. I was head over heels in love with Jackson Sullivan.”

The reason I deducted one star was due to grammar, “Does’t matter my name,” in particular stood out like a sore thumb at the beginning. The dialogue did get a little schmaltzy and cliched at times but not so much that it detracted from the thrill of the ride, so to speak. Overall it was a good rapidly paced book that took very little time to read but was enjoyable enough to overlook small mistakes and the condensed timeline of events.

Synopsis

One man diving into the past.

One woman emerging from the depths.

At the age of seventeen, Amelia Baide won silver at the Olympic Games and was the second-fastest woman in the pool. Then one tragic night she crashed into a lake and was dragged out without a pulse. Now twenty-four, she is still haunted by it and hasn’t swum again. Until this year’s anniversary of the accident. It is a day unlike any other and a strange turn of events finds Amelia back at a swimming pool.

Harry Jamieson had eyes for one girl while women and the media had eyes for him. As a trainer of Olympic athletes, he was an in-demand man. Until one boozy morning after … But from bad luck to pure chance he runs into his old flame, Amelia, at a swimming pool no less. She doesn’t remember a thing from the night of the crash.

And Harry knows every single secret.

The pair joins forces—a comeback for Amelia and Harry’s ultimate coaching opportunity. But dodging waves is hard to do, and even the strongest swimmer may sink.

Where We Belong is a second-chance love story for young and old, for swimming enthusiasts and romantics at heart.

Review

Amelia Baide was on the cusp of greatness at the tender age of 17. She was a talented swimmer of nearly historical proportions poised for the best that was undoubtedly yet to come from her. She harbored a crush on another swimmer on her squad, Harry Jamieson. Unbeknownst to her, Harry reciprocated those feelings, but in their youthful immaturity, neither spoke up and a friend of Harry’s, Kristopher Siddall, made a move instead. Harry, the golden boy of the team, was relegated to friend. That is, until the night of the accident.

At a party, events unfolded causing Amelia to leave distraught and angry. She sped away, with Harry and Kristopher hot on her heels. Amelia’s car flipped over an embankment and submerged into a lake. Long minutes passed until Harry dragged her lifeless body to surface. They didn’t speak again for 6 long years, Amelia trapped in her memories of that night, and Harry, caught up in his love for Amelia, is overcome with guilt and drowning himself in booze and women.

Six years to the day after that night, Amelia and Harry run into each other in the most unlikely of places. The connection between them is still there, but can they overcome their history to make a new future – one they both so desperately want and need?

Amelia and Harry have much to overcome. She remembers nothing of that night; Harry knows everything. Neither one of them has swum since that night, but Harry is now a renowned swimming coach. Harry, seeing his chance to redeem himself in her eyes, convinces her to train with him, and Amelia, wanting a chance to overcome her past, agrees.

Amelia is engaged to Kristopher, but that relationship has been all but over for her for a while. Kristopher is harboring his own secrets from that night, and her renewed friendship with Harry threatens them. He does not want Amelia to swim again, and he certainly doesn’t want her to spend time with Harry.

Amelia had so much to overcome, so much to get through, both in the pool and out of it. She handled each wave, and used them to feed her determination to face the next one. Such a strong and focused woman, she was perhaps the most driven heroine I have ever read. Harry was anchored to his guilt. He recognized his chance at redemption in Amelia and he took it. But that wasn’t all. Harry loved Amelia, and his soul cried out for her. He only ever saw the greatness in her, and he wanted, more than anything, to return her to her former glory.

While they worked hard in the pool, they also worked through their issues and their past. Connell doled out their tragic history to her readers in bits and pieces. This, actually, was my only issue with the book. I wished that the revelations of their past and what happened that night were given to us in larger chunks. By the time I had the entire story of what happened that night, I had difficulty recalling all of the details.

Overall, this was a phenomenal book, and I enjoyed it immensely. Clearly Ms. Connell did a tremendous amount of research into competitive swimming as the attention to detail on this aspect of the story was incredible. I found myself on the edge of my seat, tapping my Kindle furiously to turn pages, during Amelia’s meets, such was the excitement that Connell created around them. She made my heart ache for all the pain this young couple had to endure before they got the glory of their happy ending. Beautifully written, equally devastating and inspirational, Connell has given her readers a very poignant story about the strength of the human spirit, perseverance and true love in her debut novel.

Silent Memories by Hattie C. Cooper Review

4 Smooches!

kis34 (1) kis34 kis33 kis32

Synopsis

Hattie C. Cooper presents the first novel in the thrilling new trilogy of Sawmill Cove, Idaho.

A musician touring the world, Jay Jeffries left Sawmill Cove long ago to escape painful shadows from his past. But when his brother and sister-in-law are mysteriously murdered, Jay must return home to become the guardian of the only witness: Jay’s four-year-old niece, Penny, who has not spoken a word since the eve of the murder. Though the murder remains unsolved, and mysterious events continue to occur throughout the town, Jay’s primary focus remains protecting Penny.
Ultimately it may take Ryan Hart, a Forensic Artist who is as strong as she is beautiful, to help Jay and Penny come together. Ryan travels the country helping young witnesses like Penny Jeffries heal, but this case is different. For one, her new guardian Jay doesn’t want Ryan anywhere near Penny. And second, the case mirrors her own childhood in an eerily similar manner.
Now, Jay, Ryan, and Penny must all face the dark memories of their past while also accepting their unforeseen futures. Like the lake sitting still and silent amidst Sawmill Cove, the stories at its heart contain incalculable depths.

Review

Silent Memories begins with musician Jay Jeffries returning home to take care of his young niece after a senseless tragedy leaves her orphaned and unable to speak. It’s back in Sawmill cove where he meets composite sketch artist Ryan Hart who is assigned to help crack their case.

This was a difficult one for me to rate. On the surface it had every element you could wish for in a tragic romance, a great cast of characters, a horrible double murder, a tragic little girl caught in the crossfire of it all and a fragile love story teeming with hope and sweetness but once you get past all of that there was just something missing and I think it stems from the very little use of dialogue. We’re told everything but never really shown it. In saying that it was still a very enjoyable read with a writing style very reminiscent of Mia Sheridan or L.B Dunbar, it flows like poetry with Hattie’s descriptive writing bringing the scent of pine needles or the last rays of a sunset to life and in the next line being able to demonstrate the emotional upheaval that Jay, Penny and Ryan are struggling through.

‘Jay swung around, his face ready for a fight. she noted the immediate wave of surprise when he saw her, but the expression was quickly replaced by fury. He straightened and stared her down like a grizzly ready to attack. “You’re Ryan Hart?”

“Yes, I am,” she said as she walked forward and held out her hand. “And I guessing you are Mr. Jay Jeffries?” Jay didn’t take his eyes off hers and proceeded to ignore her hand. “You stay away from Penny.” He took a step forward and Ryan noted the stormy gray tone of his eyes. He pointed a finger in her face. “I’m warning you.”

The predictability factor of who the murderer was and all the events leading up to the finale of the story didn’t detract from the enjoyment of actually getting there. I loved trying to decipher the small clues and trying to piece all the past incidents in my head to get a whole picture but again the only thing I feel that let the book down was the lack of characterisation and interaction between Jay and Ryan. One moment they’re enemies and the next they’re falling for each other with very little to bridge the two together apart from an aesthetic attraction. I need my characters to show me how deep or damaged they are, I want them to demonstrate how much they need each other, how they got to that point and to do that they need to hash things out and talk. A lot. What I don’t like is to be told by the author.

The plot for Silent Memories was clearly well thought out and I can detect an awful lot of potential for Hattie, she’s poetic when describing scenery or scents and sounds going on in the peripheral of the story but I do feel like she needs to let her characters talk more and not smother what is a tremendous tale with too much descriptive talk. It was a beautiful emotional story with great connecting events but maybe too many loose ends left hanging in the wind for me after a rather abrupt ending. I do like my epilogues and I feel that it would have been very beneficial here unless the next Sawmill cove book centers around Jay and Ryan again.

Keeping King by Anne Jolin Blog Tour

KEEPING KING

Author: Anne Jolin

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Series: Rock Falls #4
~ SYNOPSIS ~

***Can be read as a standalone or as part of the Rock Falls series.***

Peyton Callaghan is a fighter, a survivor, a warrior. When it was kill or be killed, she didn’t hesitate. Now, she’s the only one left standing, haunted by the ghost of a dead man and plagued with the guilt of having taken another person’s life. The upheaval of her life to start over in Rock Falls has been rocky at best, her worst nightmares and wildest desires colliding with each other. Terror tortures her nightly, breeding fear inside her dreams, and in every waking moment, she fights against the lust that threatens to drown her.

Jayden King harbors secrets beneath his outward playboy demeanor. The women who warm his bed lay claim to nothing—you can’t lay claim to someone who doesn’t have a heart. His wit and charm are exquisite means of deflection and distraction from the turmoil roaring inside him. He’s hidden in plain sight, a mask of humor keeping the sadness at bay. The only real reflections of his soul are in the artwork he creates, pieces of him muraled on the skin of others. If tattoo artists could have a calling card, the etch of pain and suffering in each design would be his. Because when the lights go out and the women he’s satisfied have gone home, he’s alone with every fear he refuses to face.

After suffering from a brutal attack at the hands of her roommate’s stalker, Peyton is forced to live with the object of her affection. Without intention, she breathes love into his starved heart, and although the mere thought of that terrifies him, Jayden would burn the city down to keep her safe, causalities be damned.

Some people you have. Some people you hold.

She can have him. She can hold him. But can she keep King? Or is it impossible for Callaghan to keep something that was never really hers to begin with?

~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR ~

Anne Jolin

I’m twenty four years old. I was born and raised in Ladner, a small farm town just outside of Vancouver, Canada. I grew up riding horses, shooting guns and riding in trucks. I’ve been married to my handsome redneck husband for a year and we are parents to our chocolate fur baby, Bear. No kiddo’s yet! I am completely and utterly obsessed with country music, you will constantly find me stalking iTunes. If you don’t find me on iTunes, you’ll find me on Netflix because I am a self proclaimed movie junkie. Yes, that means that I quote them constantly in daily conversation and my characters do too! You couldn’t keep me away from a good action movie if you tried. I’m also a planning nut. I love to plan parties, events, trips – you name it! I don’t know if that’s considered a real hobby, but it is for me.

We were fortunate enough to travel a lot as a family growing up, and I think that helped spark my love of reading. I’m half Viking, my mom is Danish, and her entire side of the family still lives in Denmark. We’d visit them almost once a year, every year and it’s a nine hour flight. That’s a lot of uninterrupted time to read (or in my parent’s case, entertain four children – Yikes!). Somewhere along the way my love of reading, became a love of writing. I wrote short stories when I was younger, and although I majored in Business Management at college, I took as many English electives I could get my hands on.

During the day I work at my family construction company wearing a variety of different hats and at night, I write! I had never thought about writing books before, but after a few suggestions that I should try, I decided to give it a go. I loved it instantly! Having always been a creative person, it felt amazing to harness all that energy and use it to tell a story. Now, quite frankly it’s all I can think about, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m grateful to have developed my love of reading into a passion for writing. You’ll be seeing many more books from me in the future!
