Synopsis

To make matters worse, the brooding boy in the back row of her literature class stops her heart and makes it beat faster at the same time, even when he completely ignores her. She had all intentions of focusing on her studies and refusing relationships, but she finds herself in situations where she is unable to help herself. Her past may have created the fears, but now she must decide if she is going to face them.

Review

This review was quite hard for me to write, I loved the book but I don’t want to give anything away from the story. Although I felt that once you start reading it, one of the big parts of the story was obvious, I don’t want to give away what happens.

This book follows Sadie as she finally gains some independence from her mother and her past. Sadie wants distance from the things that cause her to build walls, but the problem is that the past doesn’t go away, it can’t be avoided forever. Sadie moves in with Henley, who herself is a character. We are introduced to Henley’s friends at the beginning, and also a mysterious man. Sadie soon finds herself being pursued by Gavin, the guy who literally catches her before she falls.

Gavin is cocky when we first meet him, but he soon becomes this sweet guy, who you can’t help but fall in love with. Gavin makes it clear from the beginning that he is after Sadie and he isn’t going to stop until she agrees to go on a date with him. Sadie is closed off though, but even she can’t pretend the pull between them isn’t there. Gavin will do whatever he can to make her give it.

“I’m going to fight for you.”

The second guy in this story is the dark and brooding Jamie, he is similar to Sadie, he is closed off and doesn’t want to let his guard down. Sadie isn’t sure that she likes the hot and cold feelings from Jamie, but something can’t stop her from wanting to talk to him. Jamie has secrets, he has a past he is trying to escape from as well. Jamie is always putting others feelings before his own, he likes Sadie but he doesn’t feel that he is the right person for her. All he can offer is friendship.

“You deserve a man who makes your heart race in all the good ways, who will not hesitate to do everything he can for you.”

Sadie is trying her best to bring down her walls, let her guard down and be happy, but she finds herself not being able to open up to anyone but Jamie. She tells Jamie all the things that she never told anyone. Jamie becomes her go to person even though she has started a relationship with Gavin. Gavin is such a wonderful person in this book and the first date that he arranges for Sadie is EPIC, I smiled throughout that whole scene of the book.

Just when Sadie finally lets her guard down a betrayal makes her question everything she knew and she runs straight to the person that knows her. Lines get blurred, feelings get hurt, pasts come back to ruin the present and all you can do is sit back and watch it happen.

I loved this book, it brings out all the emotions, I laughed, I got annoyed when she couldn’t see what was right in front of her and I even cried. There was a scene that just got me, it was emotional to read the feelings that were being shared. Well done Samantha Rey on a fantastic read.

I pick up a cup of cold, stale, black coffee and chug it down. It tastes like shit, so I screw the cap off of a bottle of Jack and chase the black filth with the burn of amber. I set it back on the table while the familiar click of my gun being cocked echoes through my small room. I laugh. Fucking ballsy bitches make me hot.

“Hands in the air, and turn around. Slowly,” the woman says through a scratchy throat. I do as she asks, mostly because I want to keep my spine intact, but also partly because bitches with guns are fucking hot, and I’m hard as a rock just thinking about the way she’s gonna look with a pistol trained on me.

She’s been busy while I was out, rummaging through my drawers and finding a pair of loose tracksuit pants. They’re rolled at the waist, so much that it makes her look pregnant. That, combined with her crazy fuckin’ cat lady hair and the filth covering her body, makes her look like a homeless person.

I smile and clasp my hands behind my head. Her eyes rove over me, taking in my size. She’s checking me for the arsenal I so obviously have stashed away in my fucking worn, faded jeans. She’s not checking me out and dreaming about me taking her rough and hard on my fucking scratched-up dining table, but I still get a fucking boner out of having her eyes roam all over me.

“Pick up the keys, and open the door,” she commands.

“If you run, they’ll shoot you.”

“Pick up the fucking keys.”

I snatch up the keys and lob them at her, hard enough that she has to twist out of the way. She cries out as she does, proving to me that her ribs are definitely injured, maybe even cracked. I lunge at her. Shoving her back against the bed, I land on top of her, warding off her blows with one hand and squeezing her wrist with the other until she drops the gun on the floor.

“Get off me!” she screams.

“You’re not leaving this clubhouse,” I whisper in her ear as she struggles beneath me. “The best you can hope for is to play nice and I might decide to keep you as a house mouse. But if you piss me off, and if you pull on me with my own gun again, your life will be so much worse. You thought the dentist was fucked up? Baby, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve lived inside my fantasies for a day. So if I were you, I’d be really fuckin’ careful about how you play your next move.”

Oh goodness, I don’t know where to start! Carte is a dark read, no doubt, but it’s only because it could really happen in the world today. That reality made for the darkness. Gripping my kindle in my hand, I was transported into the world of the Cartel and scared shitless of Emilio. I feared that he would look past Mariana and look at me, the reader, and quirk his eyebrow and ask me what I was looking at. Crazy, I know, but that is just the kind of roller coaster ride that Lili St. Germain sent me on! There are few books that have given me this feeling of uncertainty when turning the pages. Just because I didn’t know what was was going to happen, the unknown! Questions kept popping up in my head, Will Mariana ever get a break? Would she find love? Will she even get to live?

I loved the characters, Mariana is a firecracker. She didn’t hold back in regards to her father and his issues. And even though Emilio was hard and scary, she was brave and did what needed to be done. Dornan, well he’s the bad guy that is hard, rigid, and loves blood. But it’s the moment when he meets Mariana that he knows the course in which she will be a part of and wants to divert this Columbian beauty from it. Don’t get it twisted, his empathy for her well being isn’t going to be flaunted or known by his father.

I will definitely read more by Lilli St. Germain. I will definitely recommend this book to readers that can stand dark reads with torture and witness a love story emerging from the rubble. As for my book friends, they’ll have this book shoved in their face with a big smile from me! They’ll have to take it and read it, no mercy!

Once upon a time, I was Fallon Dunbar.

Rock and roll, drugs, and bad decisions were the life I lived.

I walked away from everything I loved, everything that was killing me, and I became Fae Dunham. After that, I hid behind makeup, long sleeves, and a closed-off heart.

All was well until I met Dane Pearson. He wasn’t convinced of the new me, and whenever he was near, I felt like the old me, the real me, filled with passion and a love for music. Staring into

the full length mirror I had just hung up on the back of the door in my new

room, I saw the shell of what I used to be, the life I could no longer have.

The only traces left of my old life were the lips piercing I refused to take

out. They were my favorites and they were staying. People like me don’t get

second chances, but for some reason, I was standing knee-deep in one.

There’s no turning back now.

I will live again.

Review

“People like me don’t get second chances, but for some reason, I was standing knee-deep in one.”

The Hysterics is an fast and easy rocker read that I was very excited to read. I went into this book pretty blind and was delighted by how much I enjoyed reading about Fallon and Dane. At under 200 pages I read the whole story in one sitting and it left me excited to read more from this group of characters in the future.

“No more musicians. Don’t do it.”

Fae Dunham is a new editor at the magazine that Dane works at to support his music career. He is instantly taken with her and wants to know everything about her. The one problem . . . Fae isn’t real. Fae used to be Fallon Dunbar a famous drummer who overdosed and everyone presumed dead when she never re-emerged in the spotlight.

“If you can’t love him completely, then don’t love him at all.”

While Fallon and Dane definitely have some instant chemistry they both have hard past they need to overcome and only time will tell if their feelings for each other are strong enough to withstand all the drama that follows. Fallon loves music but being in the spotlight led her down a nasty rabbit hole and she is very happy in her life as Fae. Dane loves being a music journalist but his dream is for his band, The Hysterics, to take off.

“Why so serious, Romeo?” “It’s the worst part of my day – leaving you.”

When Kristen wrote Dane she must have been picturing the perfect man. He is a employed journalist, a rock musician , has tattoos, is protective but is one of the sweetest written book boyfriends ever. Even he agrees that when it comes to Fallon he is basically whipped and would do anything if it meant her happiness!

“You’re a damaged, wrratic, closed of mess and I love every bit of you for it.”

The Hysterics was a great start to what I hope is a whole series of books. I do wish it was a bit longer but only because I loved Dane so much I just wanted more and more of him (I am greedy like that.) Too often rocker books are what I like to call Tour Bus Lovin books so for me I was delighted to find out that The Hysterics was more about their emerging relationship and less about steamy times in a cramped space. Great job Kristen and I look forward to seeing more of your books on my kindle soon!
