Synopsis

What if your family had a big secret . . . a life changing secret. My dad, the bigwig CIA agent, was always on the run, whether he was being chased or doing the chasing. I missed him. Then my mom passed away, and my sister was murdered. I turned my solitude to strength because the alternative was too bleak.

But my luck seemed to turn: I met Tango. And while I want him more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my twenty-two years, danger lurks around every corner and I simply can’t take the chance of it finding me. But his tattoos, his smell, his darkness, and his body— that marine has taken over my every thought. But, what if he too isn’t what I think? A ticking time bomb isn’t going to leave me much time to waver. Even the bravest person can be in need of a miracle.

Before she was gone, my mom warned me to know everyone and trust no one. But what was I supposed to do when I found out I am the one not to be trusted? Turns out, I was always the bait in this conspiracy.

In author Shari J. Ryan’s gripping novel, TAG, the canyons hold secrets, the waterfalls provide safety, and romance has a pesky way of showing up when you are sweaty and dirty and least expect it.

Review

TAG for me was a bit of a perplexing but emotional read, it started off brilliantly enough with the Prologue having an eerie Hitcockesque feel to it full of shadows, murder and treachery, as Cali our tragic heroine tells us in her emotional point of view, step by step, the traumatic events that lead her into a world of isolation, self-preservation and revenge. As the story moved along however the plot seemed to waver and go in a direction that never really benefited or progressed the plot except to highlight the lengths that Cali would go to in order to exact revenge and the desperation she feels in her need to carry it out. The synopsis and prologue both hinted of an action-packed, CIA conspiracy extravaganza but what we get is something much much different and just a bit more complex. It’s a tale of revenge but with a message of finding absolution, it’s a story of murder and betrayal from all sides with the entanglement of guilt and despair clouding the path to redemption and love for our two main protagonists

At times Cali’s character came across as very self-contained, aware and strong and at others she exuded the attitude and sarcastic bite of a surly hormonal teenager but taking into account all that leads her on her quest for vengeance and retribution, I did feel slightly amazed that she wasn’t as damaged as she believes herself to be. My only flaw with Cali’s character was the missing connection, I would sometimes feel sympathy or annoyance with her or laugh at some of the witty repartee that occurs between her and Tango but I never fully grasped the inner workings of her even though the story is told in dual points of view.

Cali’s emotional saviour comes in the form of ex-Marine and mysterious Mercenary Tango. A complex and multi-faceted hero Tango was the perfect element needed to help Cali understand that it’s okay to trust someone, to lean on someone else, to have an actual friend. It was a very slow simmer of a romance with these two, there was instant attraction but neither party attempt anything for a good majority of the book. The sexual tension never really amounted to much but the flirtation and verbal sparring still added good entertainment value.

It is a well written book with good use of grammar and dialogue but it was just a little slow and lagging in places. When you get to the last third of the book the action and excitement really kicks in to high gear and that’s what saved the story. There is plenty of intrigue and mystery towards the end so coupled with the beautiful yet fragile romance of untrusting Cali and reluctant Tango TAG is a fairly good read if you don’t mind a slow burn rather than instant gratification.

Excerpt from THE PRINCE by Sylvain Reynard on sale 1/20/15

In the distance, the Prince could hear voices and muffled sounds.

He approached silently, almost floating across the floor.

Desperate groans and the rustling of fabric filled his ears, along with the twin sounds of rapidly beating hearts. He could smell their scents, the aromas heightened due to their sexual arousal.

He growled in reaction.

The corridor was shrouded in darkness but the Prince could see that the professor had his wife up against a window between two statues, her legs wrapped around his waist.

Her voice was breathy as she spoke, but the Prince tuned out her words, moving closer so he could catch a glimpse of her lovely face.

At the sight of it, flushed with passion, his old heart quickened and he felt the stirrings of arousal.

It was not his custom to observe rather than participate. But on this occasion, he decided to make an exception. Careful to remain in the darkness, he moved to the wall opposite the couple.

The woman squirmed in her lover’s arms, her high heels catching on his tuxedo jacket. Her fingers flew to his neck, undoing his bow tie and tossing it carelessly to the floor.

She unbuttoned his shirt, and her mouth moved to his chest, as murmurs of pleasure escaped his lips.

The Prince felt more than desire as he watched the woman’s eager movements. He caught a glimpse of her exquisite mouth and the toss of her long hair that would no doubt feel like silk between his fingers.

She lifted her head to smile at the man who held her close and he could see love in her eyes.

About The Author

I am honoured to have had all three of my novels appear on the New York Times and USAToday Bestseller lists. I was a Semifinalist for Best Author in the 2011 and 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards. “Gabriel’s Inferno” was a Semifinalist for Best Romance in 2011 and “Gabriel’s Rapture” was a Finalist for Best Romance in 2012, in the Goodreads Choice Awards, as well. The final novel in The Gabriel Series, “Gabriel’s Redemption,” debuted at #6 on the New York Times Bestseller list. It was a Finalist for a 2014 Goodreads Choice Award as Best Romance.

My next book is “The Raven,” which releases February 3rd. It’s already available for preorder. I’m also publishing a prequel novella entitled “The Prince,” which releases January 20th. “The Prince” is available for preorder now.

I’m interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition – particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I’m also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, food, drink, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

I try to use my platform as an author to raise awareness about the following charities: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation, WorldVision, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and Covenant House.

Review

I might have fangirled a little bit when I got this arc.  I am huge fan of the Gabriel Series by Sylvain Reynard.  Typically, I like my NA books told in first person but Sylvain managed to win me over with his poetic way of writing.  The entire series was written so incredibly well and when I heard that the Florentine Series would be paranormal, I was crazy excited.  I do love me a paranormal book and I just knew that if you combined a paranormal aspect and Sylvain’s writing the results would be magical.  I was SO not wrong.

A lot happens in this 80 something page prequel novella.  You meet “The Prince”, a very dangerous and in charge vampire.  You get to revisit Gabriel and Julianne and boy is it sexy.  And I do love how Sylvain Reynard does sexy.  I was really shocked that it looks like Gabriel and Julianne will be making more than a small appearance in this novella.  It looks like they will have more of a roll in this series than I thought and I am dying to find out what happens with them and The Prince.  You also get to experience the beginnings of a Vampire War.  This series is already giving me the feels.  Dark, romantic, erotic, and intriguing, it had me hooked.  I cannot wait for The Raven.  It is going to be phenomenal.

Just a Small Towne girl…

Raised on fairytales and dreams of true love, Arden Winger left for college with a smile on her face and a happy, hopeful heart. Fast-forward seven years and that small town is behind her, but not the baggage she’s been carrying since she left.

Just a city boy…

It’s not that Exton Alexander had anything against relationships—he just never had the desire to try. Not necessarily jaded, Exton considered himself a realist. Little did he know, the one woman that would change everything was about to rock his world. This Alpha male knows the second he lays eyes on her that Arden is special– now he just has to work past her defenses.

Excerpt: Meet Arden & Exton

The bartenders in the VIP section are incredibly attentive and within sixty seconds of placing my order I’ve got a chocolate martini in my hand courtesy of a girl who looks like she should be a runway model as opposed to a bartender. Color me skeptical that the drink is going to be even halfway decent. Taking a sip, I let out a low moan of pure pleasure as the perfect flavor spreads across my tongue and I mentally scold myself for judging a book by its cover. She isn’t just a bartender—she’s a mixologist.

I hear a groan at the same moment that I feel someone standing right at my back. It sends a shiver through me as I lower my drink.

“I’ve never wanted a chocolate drink before,” a deep and incredibly sexy voice growls against my ear, “but listening to that moan made me want ninety of them.”

I have no explanation for why my nipples immediately become so hard that they could chip diamonds, nor do I know why I’ve got goose bumps. I’m reasonably sure that the reason my panties are damp is because whoever he is, he smells like liquid sex. Straightening my back and mentally erecting my barriers, I turn to tell the man with the fuck me voice to take a hike.

As soon as I’m turned to him, I realize my error. He was too close to begin with and now, I’m right against him, looking at a pair of sexy as sin lips. Suddenly my own feel desert dry and I lick them as I continue staring at his mouth and jaw line. Sweet holy hell—this man’s DNA could be bottled and sold for millions. I’m not even seeing all of his face and already I know that’s he’s beautiful.

A jostling from behind pushes him forward forcing us up against each other—enough so that I can feel that he’s semi hard. My breath leaves me in a whoosh, as my panties get even wetter, and my inner voice is now screaming at me to run—far and fast. Taking a deep breath I raise my free hand and set it on his chest, pushing him back from me. “Don’t touch me,” I snap.

Lifting his hands to his side so that I can see them he says, “Don’t be angry, Beautiful. I didn’t mean to close in on you like that. I just wanted to meet you.”

I am liquid just from listening to the husky tone of his voice, and it both annoys and terrifies me. Lifting my eyes up to check out the rest of his features, I shiver as I get a good look at the man before me. He’s well over six feet tall with jet-black hair and cognac colored eyes that are sending a very sexual message. Licking my lips, I try to think of something to say, then stop dead when my brain finally engages and I realize that I’m staring at Exton freaking Alexander.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I am face to face with one of the biggest playboys in Hollywood, Exton Alexander.

Review

“Grace, you’re a beautiful woman. You can do whatever you choose, but here’s what I am offering: No stories. No strings. And no regrets in the morning.”

Grace Colton has an image to uphold. As a congresswoman she knows she needs to be careful of what she does and how it might appear to her constituents. But as a lonely widow out with friends she feels all woman and is very attracted to the domineering man she meets at a bar. Deciding to anonymously go home with him for one incredible night that full filled many a fantasy she  feels alive for the first time in a long time. But when the next day comes and she finds out that not everything was as anonymous as she though does she have regrets or does she decide that there is room for more in her life than fighting for the legacies of the husband and child she lost.

“I have no problem mixing business with pleasure, especially when there are so many possibilities.”

After falling in love with her Tattoo Thief series, Heidi Joy Tretheway is a 1-click author for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect when The Phoenix Candidate arrived on my kindle but I decided to dive in blind and I am very happy I did.  The Phoenix Candidate is a super sexy political drama that will leave you guessing where Grace’s loyalties will lie when all is said and done. I love how Heidi took a political drama and sexed it up without making it feel cheap or cheesy! I got the best of both the drama and erotica worlds and I am excited to continue the series.

“No kiss. Fitting. Jared’s no prince, and my life is anything but a fairy tale.”

Jared was the highlight of this book for me. I love a man who is not all good and not all bad. He leaves me guessing and wondering, plus the man gives good dirty talk and we all know that us Red Cheeks Chicks are suckers for a dirty talking man. From the beginning Jared can tell that Grace (who is powerful in her own life) desperately wants to give in and give up control in the bedroom and boy is Jared willing to do that for her. But her has a catch and something she becomes even more desperate for . . . he won’t kiss her on the lips. He was constantly leaving me wondering where his issues came from and if they were even something he would be able to move past.

“Oh no, you do not, Mr. Tease. You will not fucking take me to the edge and just leave me there.”

Overall, The Phoenix Candidate was an easy read that was very different than any other erotic novel I have read and I am very excited to get the next part in this story soon!

PROLOGUE

Dane

16 Years Old

I STOOD TO the side, watching it all unfold in the wings. Jason’s voice grew louder, and attracted the attention of the students passing in the hall. Kennedy looked around, her eyes growing frantic, her cheeks reddening in embarrassment. I played Varsity football with Jason, he was the all-star quarterback, and while I thought the guy was a complete tool, what I disliked most about him was his interest in Kennedy Monroe. He was a senior; she was a sophomore like me, and he could have his pick of any girl in the school – why did it have to be her?

“Jason, please, can we go somewhere private and talk about why you’re freaking out?” Kennedy’s voice was soft, and filled with desperation.

“Is it true?” Asked Jason. He towered over Kennedy’s small frame, and if I hadn’t orchestrated this whole thing I would’ve told him to back the fuck off and leave her alone. But I couldn’t. Because she was the enemy.

For as long as I could remember, my father had warned me about the Monroe family. He told me to stay away from them, that their family had hated ours since our forefathers had founded this town. For a while, I listened, I stayed away, and I allowed my father’s apparent hatred for the Monroe family to become my own. It wasn’t until after we returned from this past summer that it all changed.

Kennedy had changed. In just three short months, she went from a gangly, dorky teenager to a gorgeous, stunning girl who intruded my every thought, both in sleep and consciousness. She’d started school a year earlier, making her younger than the rest of us, and what I thought she lacked in social graces she definitely made up for in smarts. She embodied everything I wanted, but couldn’t have. And that’s what had led me here.

“Is what true? I don’t know what’s gotten in to you, but we can’t do this in front of the entire school.”

Kennedy’s voice brought me back to the present, and I straightened, leaning against my locker on the opposite side of the hallway.

“Open your locker, Kennedy.”

I stiffened when Jason’s tone grew harder, but reminded myself that I had to watch rather than get involved and stop it.

Kennedy fiddled with the combination on her locker, and as soon as it popped open, the photos fell out. They consisted of pictures of Jason, close ups of his face, of him at practice, and I even managed to get a few of him at home in his room. It was all very stalker-ish.

I’d outdone myself, and couldn’t help the wicked grin on my face.

“What the hell?” Jason bellowed, picking up a few of the pictures scattered on the floor. “I can’t believe it, he was right.”

My grin fell slightly, and I hoped to God he didn’t mention my name.

“These aren’t mine,” Kennedy said quickly. “I swear, Jason, they aren’t.” She reached out to grab his arm, but he pulled away.

“I didn’t take these!” Kennedy held a few pictures in her hands, and looked up at Jason as if he’d believe her. I knew he wouldn’t. I’d made sure of it.

“Then why are they in your locker?”

“I-I don’t know,” Kennedy replied.

With a shake of his head, Jason looked between Kennedy and her locker on last time. “Dane was right,” – fuck – “You’re a freak.”

Students laughed, and Kennedy slammed her locker shut before running towards the girls’ bathrooms, tears glistening on her face.

It was a dick move, but that feeling of morbid satisfaction uncurled itself in my stomach. It was just too easy.

“You actually did it.”

I looked to the side, and saw my best friend Reid standing next to me.

“Of course I did.”

Reid sighed. “You are such an asshole.”

I pushed away from my locker, and slipped the strap of my bag over my shoulder before heading towards my next class.

“I know.”

Kennedy

15 Years Old

THE SOUND OF laughter echoed behind me, and finally died down when the bathroom door closed. I slipped into a stall, and closed the toilet seat before sitting down and taking a breath. My heart was racing, and my face was hot. Humiliation warmed my skin, and spurred the tears that had started falling down my cheeks. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but Dane had been quiet for the past weeks and I’d assumed his need to embarrass me on a daily basis had finally been satisfied. Apparently he’d been busy planning his latest prank.

I wiped my eyes, and took my cellphone from my bag. We weren’t allowed to keep our phones in our bags, but I always kept it on silent, and on hand in case of emergencies. If anything happened at school, they’d have to call my father, and I had to avoid that at all costs. There was only person I could call when I needed help, only one person I knew who would drop everything to be there for me.

I pulled up Charlie’s number, and waited for him to answer. He was coming home from college for the weekend, and I hoped he was close. I still had four hours of school, but I needed to leavenow. I didn’t want to have to stay and deal with any more crap. I’d had my fill for the day.

My brother’s voice came through the phone, and I relaxed, if only a little. “Hello? Kenny?”

“C-Charlie…” My lip started trembling.

“Kennedy, what’s wrong?”

“Are you close?” I asked. “Can you come get me, please?”

“I’m ten minutes out, baby girl, you hang tight.”

My shoulders sagged in relief. “Okay, I’m at school. I’ll meet you in the parking lot next to the sports field.”

“I’ll be there.”

I ended the call, and after righting myself in the mirror, I checked the hallway to make sure everyone, including the teachers, were in class. When it was clear, I snuck out, and quietly made my way towards the back exit of the school. No one would see me, and I could cut class for the rest of the day without anyone knowing until the teachers took roll call. By then I’d be gone.

I never cut class, ever, but today I felt like I needed to. I needed to see Charlie, and waiting four more hours wasn’t going to happen. I hadn’t seen him in almost a month, and it had been unbearable without him.

As soon as his blue Ford F250 stopped in the lot, he was out of the door, and had his arms around me before I could say anything.

I hugged him close, and breathed in his familiar scent of leather, and pine. The girls always ate him up, but nothing compared to having him as my big brother. He was all I really had, and had been protecting me for most of my life.

“I’m here,” he breathed into my hair.

I pulled away, and wiped the fresh tears that had slipped down my eyes. “I’ve missed you.”

He gave me his boyish grin, his eyes bright and so alive. His hair, which was a darker shade of blond, had grown, and hung on his forehead. He was such a man now, but I still saw the little boy who always bandaged up my ‘booboo’s, and the teenager who stayed with me the first time I got my period because there was no one else who could do it.

“C’mon,” he tugged my hand, and helped me into his truck. “We can grab some ice-cream, hit our favorite spot, and you can tell me what has you looking like a hot mess.”

I giggled, and felt the weight of the last month drift away as Charlie drove us away from school and into town. He picked us up some ice-cream, and took me to the only spot he knew I loved more than any other place. The lake.

It was a ten-minute drive outside the town limits, and at this time of year it was beautiful. Warm, and sunny, and safe.

I laid out a blanket from Charlie’s truck on the deck, and took a seat, dipping my toes in the water. Charlie sat down next to me, his big arm around my shoulders, and pressed me against his side.

“Okay, kid. Tell me what Dane Winters did this time.”

I looked up at him in surprise.

“Jewel called me,” he explained.

Jewel was Dane’s twin sister, and while our families couldn’t stand each other, Jewel and I had managed to become close. We could never hang out like normal best friends did, but we made it work anyway.

Charlie said her name with reverence, and while I wanted to know what that was about, I didn’t want to pry. He would tell me if he’d wanted me to know, and I left it at that. I had more pressing issues that needed to be cleared up, and the only way I could do that was to lay it all out.

“Spill it,” Charlie said.

And so I did. I told him everything.

That day at the lake was one of my favorite days, and I hadn’t known until much later in my teen life that it would be one of the last memories I’d have with my brother.

CHAPTER ONE

Kennedy

Present Day

THERE WAS SOMETHING truly somber about returning home after being gone for a year and a half. I’d thought about this moment more times in the last week than I’d cared to admit. I wondered if there would be someone here waiting for me, but I knew better than to wish for things like that.

The cobblestone driveway was dark, and the lights that normally illuminated the towering brick face house were off.

No one was home.

As I stopped my Jeep in front of the doors, I tried to squelch the disappointment and replace it with mock relief. I’d expected it, and yet I was naïve enough to hope that maybe, just maybe, it would be different this time.

I inhaled deeply, and tightened my vice grip on my steering wheel, both of which were feeble attempts at gathering enough courage to go inside.

It’s just for one night, I told myself.

I’d be spending one night here before heading off to college tomorrow. I would’ve been happier to spend it in Georgia, but our dorms opened tomorrow and I wouldn’t have made the fifteen-hour drive fast enough.

I climbed out, and made my way to the front doors. I was surprised to find that my key still opened the lock, and the sound echoed loudly through the dark, open space.

“Hello?”

My voice traveled, and came back to me. I was alone.

“Great” I muttered.

I shut the door, and went about switching more lights on as I made my way from the kitchen to the living room, and then the dining room. After grabbing my small duffel bag from my car, I walked upstairs, ignoring the family photo’s splashed across the walls. They were all used to make outsiders think we were family, and maybe we could have been. But on the night of my high school graduation that had all changed, and I found myself more alone than ever.

My room was still left the same, much to my disbelief. I was sure my stepmother would have snatched up the opportunity to get rid of all my things as soon as my taillights disappeared. For the most part I’d taken the majority of my clothes, and small belongings with me when I moved, but the larger pieces of furniture had to stay. My large bed still stood against the right wall, with my desk, and dresser against the left. The floor still had the same soft carpeting, and the walls were still the light shade of pink I’d chosen when I was thirteen.

It felt strange being back here. I expected it to be harder, but I was oddly detached from it all. The few good memories I did have were all faded, like an aged photograph. I’d moved on. Or at least I’d tried to. There were still a few things that had the ability to set me back, but none of them were as daunting as seeing him again. My mood plummeted slightly when thoughts of him popped into my head uninvited.

“Kennedy?”

My thoughts halted, and I turned at the sound of the voice. When I glanced at the small, elderly woman standing in my doorway I smiled wide, and ran to her.

“Lucy!”

I enveloped her in a hug and squeezed. I pulled away, and found her blue eyes watery. Her greyed hair was tied up in a bun, and her light blue robe hung off her thin frame. She was a tiny woman, and she’d aged so much since I’d last seen her.

“Kennedy,” she sighed, “it really is you.” Her voice cracked, and I felt my heart constrict. I never considered how my leaving had affected her – if I had, I probably would’ve stayed. I couldn’t have that.

“It’s me Luce.”

Her hand shook as she cupped my cheek. “Oh sweet girl, you look so grown up. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too,” I replied honestly. It was impossible to lie to her. Lucy had been working for us since before I was born, and lived on the property in a small cottage with her husband, Frank. He’d tended to our gardens, and maintained the grounds before he passed away three years ago. Growing up, Lucy was the only constant source of love and affection I had. Well, her and my brother, Charlie.

“I saw the lights switch on,” said Lucy, walking into my room. “If I’d known you were coming home I would have gotten the house ready.”

“That’s okay, Luce. I’m only here for one night. I have to pack a few more things before I move into my dorm at Brighton tomorrow.”

“Can I make you something to eat? I have some left-over chicken soup, and fresh bread that I can warm up for you? I made too much since it’s just me here.”

“That would be great,” I replied. “I’m just going to shower, and then I’ll be down.”

“I’ll put ‘Dirty Dancing’ on and we can catch up, okay?” Lucy wiped a tear away from her cheek, and then disappeared downstairs.

I let out the breath I’d been holding. Turned out seeing Lucy was all it took for the feelings I’d worked hard to bury to resurface. I’d have to worry about them later though. I had some packing to do.

After a quick shower, I slipped into a black tank top and cotton shorts before heading downstairs to the kitchen. Lucy had just sliced some bread, and took a bowl of her chicken soup out of the microwave.

“Just in time,” she said with a smile. “Sit your butt down, and eat something. You’re too skinny.”

With a chuckle I pulled out a bar chair and sat down. “Still bossy, I see.”

Lucy swatted me with a dishtowel and then took a seat next to me. “I haven’t changed,” she said. “But I can see you have.”

I took a mouthful of soup, diverting my gaze, and groaned. It was delicious.

“We all have to grow up, Luce. I just had to take a different road to get there.”

She fiddled with the dishtowel, wringing it between her aged fingers before looking back at me. The look in her eyes spoke volumes, more than any real words could say. We both knew why I’d changed, and why I’d been forced to grow up faster than most people my age. I was only eighteen, but it felt like I was twice that age.

“I’m sure if your father knew you were coming he would have been here,” said Lucy. I rolled my eyes, and took a bite of bread before replying. “We both know that’s not true. He could barely tolerate being in the same room with me as a child, and I doubt he feels any different now. Where has he taken the wicked stepmonster anyway?”

Lucy pursed her lips, knowing that she couldn’t deny a single word I’d just spoken. She knew better than anyone what my dear ol’ daddy was like when I was younger.

“They’re in Spain. They’re coming back in three weeks, after your father has tended to some business in Dallas.”

I looked at the remainder of my food, and pushed it away, my appetite suddenly gone. Thinking about my father and his trophy wife had that effect on me.

“That was delicious,” I said, squeezing Lucy’s hand. “I’ve missed your food.”

She peered into my bowl, and tsk’ed. “You hardly ate anything. No wonder you’re just skin and bone.”

“I’m not that skinny,” I retorted. “I’ve just lost some weight.”

Lucy narrowed her eyes but said nothing more as she cleaned up. What more could she say? I was in fact thinner after my year in Georgia, but I didn’t worry. Grief affected people in a variety of ways, and with me, it had robbed me of my desire to eat. And sleep.

“You want some ice-cream?” Asked Lucy.

“Depends. Do you still keep my favorite?”

She scoffed. “Of course. Peanut Butter and Fudge.”

“Then yes. We’ll eat that while you swoon over Patrick Swayze.”

I giggled, and made my way to the living room. Lucy joined me on the sofa, and we started chatting about what I’d been up to over the last few months. We skirted around the harder topics, and I was grateful for that. There were some things I wasn’t ready to talk about yet. With anyone.

I’m 21 years old & the ultimate Book Brat 🙂 Coffee & Books are my drugs of choice, neither of which will be kicked to the curb any time soon! I go through a book a day & when I’m not reading I’m working on my debut novel, Beneath Your Beautiful :)I’m a sucker for New Adult Contemporary Romance with a whole lot of sexy thrown in & my number one rule is I won’t read a book unless it has a happy ending! I also have the unhealthiest obsession with the South, and I don’t mean my home country of South Africa – I mean cowboys, pick up trucks, sexy as sin Southern accents, cowboy boots and barefoot bluejean nights! One day, I will live in Alabama & I will have my own Indie publishing house – my philosophy is if your dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough 🙂

A true friendship never dies.

Leisel and Evelyn lost everything. Husbands. Families. Friends. Lives that made sense. All they had left was each other, and a friendship that could withstand anything…

Even an apocalypse.

Until one fateful night, the marginal safety they’d come to rely on comes to a vicious and brutal end. With the help of Alex & Jami, both unlikely allies, Leisel and Evelyn are able to escape their shattered sanctuary only to find themselves face-to-face with a much altered, much crueler life where they have to find the way—and the will—to stay alive in a world they no longer recognize.

Traveling across a broken and infection-ridden country; the road-weary group are pitted against endless violence, improbable circumstances, and the ultimate loss.

Everything comes at a price—especially safety, the cost of which could very well strip them of the one thing they’ve tried so hard to cling to: their humanity.

Yet along with all the trials they’re forced to endure, there’s also hope in the form of love. Having loved Leisel from afar, Alex attempts to put the pieces of her fractured heart back together.

But in such a savage world, is there room for love?

In a place of nightmares-made-reality, where the living should be feared far more than the dead, an unbreakable friendship and a love amongst all odds can mean the difference between life and death.

There are friends…

And then there are Leisel and Evelyn.

Review

This is a really hard review for me to write.  I have been thinking and thinking about what I want to say and how I want to say it.  It is easy to say that I loved it and it was amazing and I for damn sure couldn’t put it down and how I read it all in one sitting.  That is the easy part because this book is not my usual read.  I like love stories.  All of them. But this isn’t a love story in the traditional sense but it TOTALLY was a love story.  The love story just happened to be between to best friends.  Two women that loved each other long before the apocalypse.

“You made me so happy that day, Eve, and every day since.  I love you, and I am grateful every single day that you married my husband’s best friend, that you became my best friend.  You make the days worthwhile.  You make everything worthwhile.”

Thicker Than Blood is Leisel and Evelyn’s story of loving and helping one another survive during a zombie apocalypse.  That is right folks, I read a freakin zombie book and I loved every stinking minute of it.  But, hey, I don’t know if you can REALLY call it a zombie book because it wasn’t really about the zombies.  It was about these two women trying to make it in a world where most people have lost their humanity, where you fear another human more than you fear living in the wild with the zombies.  That was the most interesting part of this book, the people they met and how it affected their lives and friendship directly.  And boy what an incredibly crazy ride it was.  Crazy religious folks, prostitutes with no legs, fights to the death.  See, the interesting part of this book wasn’t the zombies, it was EVERYTHING else.  Just don’t go into this book with any preconceived notions because your probably wrong.  REALLY REALLY wrong.  For those wondering if their is an actual romantic element to this book, there definitely is and it was definitely sexy and beautiful and heartbreaking.

“I wanted this comfort and warmth, this intimacy.  I wanted something to relieve the fear, the cold, the crippling guilt and regret.  Just a for moment, for a single moment, I wanted to remember what it felt like to be alive. “

Ok, enough about the story.  I really want to talk about the writing.  This book has two POV’s; Liesel’s and Evelyn’s.  It reads like each author picked a character and wrote for that one character the entire book and I really loved that.  It made them believable and real.  Liesel and Evelyn are so very different so I grew to expect a certain style of writing and feeling from each character as they switch POV’s.  The book was written beautifully.  I certainly expect that of Madeline but this is the very first book I have read by Claire C. Riley and I am happy to report that she did not disappoint.  All of the writing was so crazy descriptive.  I felt like I was there.  Like I could smell the sweat and blood.  Like I could hear the squish and pops.  It was almost too much for me sometimes.  LOL!  I felt like I could see  all of the different kinds of people they met in their journeys.  I cannot fully explain how immersed I was in this novel, just know that it was amazing.

I won’t tell wether this book has an HEA or not because my idea of an HEA isn’t always the idea of what others may consider an HEA.  Maybe I am a bit morbid?  It ended how I would expect it to given the circumstances.

“We should have learned by now that nothing was ever easy in this world.  Yet, like children, we remained forever hopeful, optimistic that just once something would go right for  us.

You meet so many coloful characters in this book and I am so excited to tell you that there will be a second book in this series and that I CANNOT WAIT!  MORE E, PLEASE.  NOW!
