Fortunate Son by Jay Crownover Review

5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

Ry Archer and Bowe Keller are as different as night and day. But that doesn’t stop the childhood frenemies from reconnecting whenever one of them needs some help tackling any of life’s major puzzles, like figuring out why getting what you always thought you wanted isn’t living up to all the hype. They might constantly rub each other the wrong way (except for the times when they rub each other the really-really right way), but there is no denying they’ve always made one hell of a great team. They manage to balance each other out… when they aren’t driving each other crazy.

For Ry, he thought he had the perfect girl, the one who was going to run headfirst into a methodically planned future. He was going to marry young and have the same kind of legendary, life-long romance his parents did… or so he believed. His girl was going to stand by his side as he chased his dream of being a professional football player all the way to the NFL.

He was wrong.

Now, Ry’s gotta figure out the difference between a bruised heart and a broken one, and the only person who can teach him the difference is Bowe.

Bowe always felt like she had to run before she learned to walk to keep up with her father’s musical legacy. He’s her hero, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud. Bowe’s about to figure out that maybe she wasn’t meant to be in a rock and roll band and that it is possible she let her father’s success cloud her idea of what making music should be. Bowe needs to find her own path to fame, and there’s a good chance she wouldn’t be brave enough or bold enough to start over if Ry Archer hadn’t charmed his way back into her life when she least expected it.

Some days they’re enemies. Other days they’re lovers. For a while, they were strangers. But now, it feels more like they might have always been soulmates.

Eventually, Ry and Bowe realize that letting go of an old dream and creating a new one is much easier to do with the right person by your side.

REVIEW:

I’m a huge Jay Crownover fan, and her Marked Men series is where that adoration began. I love Jay’s writing style, I love her characters and their stories, and I really love how she makes me feel and think. She never fails to draw me into her stories with her characters’ struggles and their edgy, gritty, deeply emotional tales entwined in steamy, hard-fought romances. Her stories consume me, her characters stay with me, and I look forward to a new story from Crownover with night before Christmas levels of anticipation. Jay Crownover wrecks me in the best possible ways, and while I may not walk away from the experience unscathed, I am always satisfied and sated and starving for more.

Fortunate Son kicks off a second generation of stories rooted in Crownover’s iconic Marked Men and Saints of Denver series. She launches the Forever Marked series with the love story of the children of two of her most beloved couples – Shaw & Rule’s son, Ry, and Ayden & Jet’s daughter, Bowe. This group of friends is more like an extended family, tight-knight and close, and Ry and Bowe grew up within that dynamic. Two vastly different personalities, they’ve often been confused by the overwhelmingly big emotions they drew from each other. Unsurprisingly, they have been dancing around each other for years. As it often goes, that angsty teenage emotion overtakes them, and they wind up acting on those feelings. Instead of being the start of something beautiful, though, it’s a teenage crash and burn of epic proportions that results in years of estrangement between these frenemies.

Ry is a very emotionally mature young man. Outwardly, he’s got his act together, and he’s the solid one, the guy all the other kids in their big extended family look up to and lean on, but inwardly, it’s another story. Ry is struggling, and he’s not exactly sure why—something is missing and isn’t quite right with his life. He was settled in a comfortable but bland relationship, but when it suddenly ended, he was sent reeling. The next thing he knows, he’s 13 hours away from home, at Bowe’s in the middle of the night. Bowe isn’t exactly thrilled to find a heartbroken Ry on her doorstep given that’s she’s severely limited contact with him over years after she was left devastated the last time she entrusted her heart to him. She was just as surprised as Ry that he chose to turn to her after having his heartbroken, but she didn’t turn him away. A talented musician, Bowe was plugging along, chasing her dream of being a rockstar and following in her rockstar father’s footsteps. One of the most unnerving things that they both admit about the other was their uncanny abilities to see through whatever façade they presented to everyone else. There is a lot of self-discovery and realization going on during Ry’s post-breakup stay with Bowe, on both of their parts, and the personal growth they both experienced served to shore up their previously shaky foundation.

A story about learning to recognize what you have, what you truly need and finding the courage to take those big, scary risks when it really matters, Fortunate Son was a fresh take on a classic, fan-favorite Crownover series. Jay did an incredible job catching readers up on some of the OG Marked Men characters while introducing them to this next generation. I love a good opposites attract connection, and no one writes them quite like Jay Crownover. On the surface Ry and Bowe were an unlikely pairing, but as their story evolves, it’s easy to see just how and why they fit together so well. Rich with chemistry and angsty emotion, this story about two childhood friends navigating major life changes and the beginning of an important relationship. A contradiction in every way, I reveled in both the emerging new world and the nostalgic roots from which it was born. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and I devoured this addictive, unputdownable story in a day. Five stars from me for Fortunate Son by Jay Crownover.

Neither of us can afford to lose our jobs…but we also can’t seem to keep our hands off each other either.

“Kiss me. Just this once . . . please Walker.”

Those whispered words were my undoing . . .

As the most hated player in baseball, I had two options: either clean up my image or pack my bags. Being traded wasn’t an option which only meant one thing, I had to become compliant.

That’s how I found myself sharing a small bistro table with Kate Chapman, the Chicago Bobbies newest PR Manager. Devastatingly beautiful, vastly intelligent, and incredibly cunning, she knows exactly how to handle my grumpy demeanor.

It was supposed to be simple. Book some PR events, show up, smile for the camera, and be done. But one massive mistake on my end sends me into the trenches with Kate, forcing me to open up to her.

Innocent glances turn into cordial encounters.

Secret touches turn into tempting invitations.

And dangerous nights alone turn into consuming desperation.

I’ve never wanted a woman as much as I want her. And I know she wants me, but there’s a no fraternizing with the players rule. Neither of us can afford to lose our jobs, but we also can’t seem to keep our hands off each other either.

EXCERPT:

I slip on my clothes, going for a pair of jeans and a long-sleeved Henley. I push the sleeves up, still heated from the shower. I leave my hat in my locker, opting for a quick swab of styling pomade through my hair. I couldn’t care less what I look like, but Coach always likes us to be somewhat presentable after a game in case we run into any press.

Hungry and ready for my bed, I head out of the locker room and am making my way toward the players’ exit when a throat clears behind me. I glance over my shoulder to find Kate Chapman standing against the wall, her purse draped over her shoulder and a beautiful smile gracing her delicately freckled face.

She quickly gives me a once-over and says, “It was the socks.”

I can’t help it, I let out a low chuckle while slowly shaking my head and turning toward her. Hands in my pockets, I say, “It wasn’t the socks.”

Her mouth drops open in disbelief as she approaches me. “It was so the socks.” She points her finger at me.

“Don’t even deny it.”

“It was all my practice.”

“Yeah, practice with me. Just admit it, Rockwell, you had fun last night, the socks were a good luck charm, and you played your ass off tonight.”

I don’t believe in superstitions, which is unheard of when it comes to a baseball player, but I’ve never geared my play around being a habitual player, either. Instead, I do what feels right. So, believing in socks having a special power and helping me gather some hits tonight—nah, not real. But I will say this—having my socks up reminded me why I was behind that plate. It reminded me of being small again and taking joy in the little things.

Was it the socks? Maybe.

Was it the thought of the girl standing in front of me?

Maybe a little more.

“It wasn’t the socks.”

Her head falls back as she groans. “You’re so stubborn.” She makes eye contact with me again. “Do you realize that?”

“Yeah.” I rock on my heels, trying not to stare at her too much.

Just picture me pitching to you.

When I said that would be too distracting, I meant it. With her softly curled hair and her gorgeous smile that doesn’t seem to ever falter—unless I’m a total dick and walk out on her—she’s caught my eye.

She’s starting to imprint herself on my brain.

She’s starting to make me feel shit I shouldn’t be feeling.

“Well, I’m—”

“What are you doing right now?” I ask out of the blue, surprising myself, and her.

“Uh, I was going to give you a hard time and then go home?” she says with a hint of question at the end.

I nod at her. “Hungry?”

She eyes me suspiciously. “Starving.”

“Want to get some food?”

She chews on her bottom lip, thinking about her answer, and I know it’s not in a joking around way, but more so she’s afraid. Afraid of me, possibly. Afraid for her job, most likely.

So, I add, “You know, to discuss business.”

It’s against team policy to fraternize with the players. I know that, she knows that, but, for the life of me, after seeing that infectious joy on her face, I had to ask her. I had to try to spend more time with her.

“Well, if it’s business . . .” She smiles brightly and then nods behind her. “Follow me.”

REVIEW:

I have loved every single one of Meghan Quinn’s Brentwood series books. These ball players, the heroines, their heart-tugging, humorous love stories have captured my heart, and I’ve loved every single second I’ve spent in their world.

Walker Rockwell is perhaps the most hated player in baseball. Grumpy and grouchy is his default mood, and his image has taken a serious hit for it. Enter Kate Chapman, the PR/events coordinator for his team, the Bobbies. She’s going to help him spiff up his image by getting him involved in some high profile events that will showcase a softer side of him to the press, the public and the fans—at least that’s the plan. Unfortunately, as is often the way it seems to go for Walker, Kate winds up doing a great deal of damage control rather than simply executing her carefully crafted PR campaign for him. Walker, being the curt curmudgeon that he is, either fights Kate every step of the way or makes it crystal clear he’s going along with her plan very begrudgingly. As they get to know each other through all the forced proximity of these events, their witty banter ignites the chemistry between them. There was this constant push and pull between them was made all the more delicious by the Bobbies’ strict no fraternization policy between players and employees. That touch of taboo on top of everything else proved to be the kindling on the flames of their attraction, and try as they did, fighting the temptation ultimately became a losing battle.

Meghan Quinn and her emotional sneak attacks… I knew it was coming—I knew it. There I was, in the zone, happily devouring this great story, totally swept up in my feels, the happily-ever-after I so wanted for Walker and Kate right there when it happened. Quinn has this way of turning on a dime and serving up powerful emotions in unexpected ways when the reader has been lulled into complacency by this author’s clever use of humor and heat. And I fall for it every single time. Every. Single. Time. It’s brilliant, and it’s absolutely my favorite part of reading Quinn’s work. Being so captivated by the story that I’m taken by surprise by these emotional shifts.

A slow-burning, forbidden sports romance, The Perfect Catch was a hard-fought, heart-racing pleasure to read. This couple had more than their fair share of ups and downs, and I was invested in their story from the start. The Perfect Catch by Meghan Quinn gets five smooches from me!

A sexy standalone forbidden sports romance from #1 NYT Bestseller Lauren Blakely!

The woman I want is as off-limits as they come.

I had an excuse two years ago when I met her on campus. She interviewed me for a story on major league baseball’s rising stars, and we shared a hot, passionate night that ended far too soon, and without a mention of who her father was.

Now I know the innocent but sexy woman I can’t stop thinking about is the coach’s daughter.

That means her dad is the guy who determines if I bat fourth in the starting lineup in every game, or ride the bench.

All the more reason to resist alluring, confident, brainy Reese every time I run into the reporter-turned-sports publicist.

That ought to be easy enough, until the time she confesses she’s still carrying her V card, and she’s been wanting me to cash it in since the day we met.

Staying away from her is going to be harder than resisting a fastball down the middle.

Especially since I’m pretty sure she’s the one who got away, and letting her slip through my fingers again would be a rookie mistake.

REVIEW:

I love a good sports romance, and Lauren Blakely has written some of my favorites. She knocked it out of the park with the first book in the Rules of Love series, The Virgin Rule Book, and she hit a home run with this book, The Virgin Game Plan, too. I listed to the audio, and Jason Clarke and Ava Erickson were positively fantastic. Their natural chemistry perfectly portrayed these characters and brought them to life. Coupled with Blakely’s witty prose, their performances created an unputdownable forbidden sports romance full of longing, lust and all these wonderful second-chance-at-love vibes.

I loved Reese. She was whip-smart, driven, hard-working, but as Holden’s coach’s daughter, she was also very off limits. There was an innocence to her that wasn’t naive or immature but instead played up the confident, sexy woman that was emerging. Holden was completely focused on his career in professional baseball. A good guy through and through, he was definitely in deep with Reese, but he was struggling with the unspoken player’s code and his loyalty to his coach. I loved his friendships with the other guys, despite the fact that they were technically his rivals, and I loved how close he was with his family. Reese may not have had the greatest relationship with her father, but I really like how directly and maturely she handled their rift.

There was so much substance to Holden and Reese’s story, and Blakely took readers on this couple’s fateful journey to happily ever after, carefully telling their story through their ups and downs. The electricity of their first meeting was thwarted by fate throwing—almost immediately—a serious wrench into their plans. Then two years down the line as they realize they’re both back in the same city, clearly ready to pick up where they left off, and the fickle mistress fate once again toys with their plans, foiling them before they can even materialize. Given the circumstances, Holden and Reese settle into a friendship despite the fact that they’re both seriously crushing on each other. There was such a natural ease between them, but it was that nearly overwhelming attraction, the soul-deep yearning for each other, and the stone cold fact that they both wanted so much more than friendship that ultimately drove this couple together. Their romance was overflowing with all those gotta-have-you-now, I’m-so-into-you feels, creating a truly smoking hot, heart-thumping, feel-good love story.

Lauren Blakely’s romances are as known for their wit and charm as they are for their heat and heart, but what they aren’t known for are being overly angsty or unnecessarily dramatic–and that’s precisely what I love about her writing. Cover-to-cover, her love stories are an absolute joy to read. These are the kinds of books that I’m happy to pick up and that make me happier with each passing page. This was exactly the kind of romance she gave her readers here in The Virgin Game Plan. I was so totally caught up in Reese and Holden’s love story, I listened to it straight through without pausing. I’m so excited about this series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the other characters stories! Five smooches from me for The Virgin Game Plan by Lauren Blakely!

Author:  LANI LYNN VALE

Genre:  ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

Photographer:  FURIOUSFOTOG

Model:  DYLAN HORSCH

Release Date:  SEPTEMBER 21, 2021

A porn video changed his life.

One second, he has an ex with an ax to grind, and the next, he’s internet famous—and definitely not in a good way. In an, it’ll ruin your career, kind of way.

Only, Laric didn’t know that he was internet famous.

Not until a black-haired beauty walks into his life, and stumbles over every word that she says because all she can picture is him doing the unthinkable for the world to see.

Sadly, that’s not the only thing wrong in his life. His world is messed up, and he likes it that way.

There’s no room for a woman that wants to fix him.

Because fixing requires intimacy, and intimacy isn’t something that Laric does. Not after the life that he’s lived, and the things he’s done to survive. Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that he’s a felon, and he has no regrets about how he got that title.

The last thing he needs in his life is a woman that has her head in the clouds and thinks this world is made of butterflies and confetti.

However, Catori isn’t who she seems.

The day she meets tall, dark, and handsome, he saves her life. And then never leaves—though not for his lack of trying.

Not that she’s complaining about the way they’re thrown together, time after time. She’s more than willing to have a man like Laric around. Mostly because she’s already seen the good in him that he refuses to admit that’s there.

He may be a biker that does questionable things, but in her heart, she knows that he does those bad things for good reasons. And she’s not about to throw away the chance at happiness just because he thinks he knows what’s best for her.

Plot twist: she knows what’s best for her. And that’s him.

God help her.

Fall stupidly in love with hockey’s favorite bad boy? Ugh.

After wasting years of my life with the wrong person, I told myself all I wanted was a little no-strings fun. Enter Alex Braun—a wealthy, handsome, notorious playboy who’s equal parts charming and dangerous as hell to my wounded heart.

After enduring a very public breakup of his own, the sexy player doesn’t want to be anyone’s forever. Too bad he barreled his way into my heart, instead of just my bed.

But this professional athlete knows a thing or two about competing, and he won’t let go so easily.
