Word Play by Amalie Silver is an amazingly funny, witty, punch you in the throat with it’s take on social media piece of writing. It left me breathless countless times with it’s spot on humor about the lives of writers, bloggers, and the entire book industry. It centers around a writer, Michael Rourke and a book blogger, Monica Singer. Monica is not all she appears to be though. I will leave that little nugget for you to discover yourself. While we are talking about deception, Michael isn’t exactly who he portrays himself to be either. This hilarious story unfolds with Michael barely comprehending the fact that he is not a mystery writer, as he believes himself to be. In a fit of desperation to, you know, buy food and booze and pay rent, he wrote an erotica novel. Not just any piece of erotica, but a bestseller to boot. His agent has made arrangements for him to attend a book convention in Houston and so off he sets for an adventure that will truly change his life forever.
I can’t say this enough: this story is a breath of fresh air. It came to me at a time when I was reading what seemed to be the same drivel over and over and it truly was rejuvenating. Yes I am a blogger. Yes I love reading and I receive many opportunities at reading ARCs, but without sounding too…snobbish, sometimes it gets old. This story is anything but ‘old’. It is a satire, so parts are exaggerated, but in the best possible way. The characters, all of them, are so friendly, familiar, and rich. Their stories unfold and intertwine perfectly creating a world about books and writing that is all too familiar. It was an immense joy to read and fall in love with Michael and his lady love. Their story is actually way more complicated that it first seems, and yet it is simple in truth. They like each other. Simple, understated and yet at the same time, everything. This is the perfect anecdote to the constant barrage of billionaire playboys dominating the young virgins that have swept the industry. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place for those. But if you have spent many hours in that ‘place’ and are looking for something that will leave your stomach cramping with laughter, Word Play is definitely for you!
