Breaking A Legend by Sarah Robinson Review

4 Smooches

Synopsis
As one of the big names at his family’s gym, Legends, MMA star Rory Kavanagh is used to being in the spotlight—until a gruesome leg injury knocks him out of the cage. Rory is left feeling sidelined in more ways than one, battling the inner demons that come with losing the one shot at his dreams. Then Clare walks into his life and gives him a new dream: winning her heart. There aren’t many new faces in Woodlawn these days, but this tough, beautiful stranger makes Rory want to get his life back into fighting shape.
Clare Ivers doesn’t think she’ll be able to tell anyone what really brought her to the close-knit Bronx neighborhood where she just started bartending. But her life’s on pause and her past is catching up fast, try as she might to move on—with new friends, steady work, and a chiseled alpha male trying to get her attention. Even though Rory’s more than a little intense, she can’t deny that her heart beats faster when he looks at her with those soulful silver eyes. Clare thought she was done with love, but Rory might just be man enough to show her she thought wrong.

Review
“Careful, mhuirnin, can’t have you falling over me.”
Breaking A Legend is my first book by Sarah Robinson and while written in third person it was an enjoyable fighter book that introduces us to a sexy cast of characters in the Kavanagh brothers. Rory Kavanagh is coming off a career ending injury and has turned to alcohol and pain pill to fill the void along with a slew of easy women. Then he meets new in town bartender Clare. She calls him on his shit and puts him in his place and yet he can’t help but feel protective and possessive over her. There attraction is apparent and their chemistry boiling.
“I need you, Clare. I need you more that I ever knew I could need someone. Please, mhuirin.”
I loved the bones of this book. The family dynamic along with the mob ties all built into a family fun MMA fighter gym. I wanted to love Rory more than I did. His ability to come and go from drugs made it hard to believe his addiction. But Rory and Clare as a couple I loved. Both in their own parts are tough on the outside but show their softness for each other. Clare is running from her demons and her past and when they get too close to home she leaves the one person who has ever really made her feel safe and loved.
“Yesterday is over. The past is over. You’re with me, right here and now. Tomorrow, next week, next year, you’re with me. You’re mine, Clare. Do you understand?”
On the whole, this was an enjoyable fighter book that left me interested in the family dynamics and wanting to know more about this cast of characters. There are lots of references to the family being part of an old school Irish-American mob but in this first book in the series we don’t get a lot of chances to see that, so I hope that plot line is one that is followed more in the books to come. If you are a fan of MMA fighter books with broken heroes and strong heroines who can help heal them than this is one to check out.
