Excerpt

“It’s so beautiful here. I mean, it’s the middle of November and freezing, but I still want to step into the edge of the waves and dig my toes into that shimmering white sand. It’s breathtaking,” I said, watching a flock of seagulls soar over the ocean while a few dipped down into the water for a snack.

I braced myself in the seat, expecting him to lash back. Instead he surprised me by reaching into my lap, and dragging my hand over to rest on his thigh. I relished his strong warm hand covering the back of mine. His shoulder relaxed a fraction and relief zipped through me.

“Malibu’s better.” His voice ground out deep and filled with edge.

“I don’t know about the beach in Malibu, but once I had amazing random sex with a gorgeous hot guy there.” I nudged his shoulder and batted my eyes at him.

“Amazing, huh?”

“The best.”

“Have you ever regretted it?” He kept his focus on the highway, but swept his thumb over my fingers.

“Regretted what? Having random sex, or meeting him?”

“Both.”

“No. He made me feel pretty and wanted when I needed that the most. So no, I don’t regret one single minute.”

“Pretty? He fucked up. He should have made you feel beautiful.” A genuine smile pulled his lips upward and I cemented his words into my memory for life.

“Thank you,” I whispered, and turned my hand over, palm to palm with his. Our fingers intertwined and I breathed in happiness.
