  • What’s your affiliation with Sniper 1 Security, for those that may not know yet?

Sniper 1 Security is my family’s business. My father, Casper Kogan, and his long time friend, Bryce Trexler started the company more than three decades ago. I guess it seemed logical that I did what my family did. I’m a personal security specialist – though there are plenty of names people use to refer to us.

  • Do you think of yourself as an adrenaline junky since you like this line of work?

Adrenaline junkie? Hmmm. Sure, I guess I can see that. I like to live on the edge. I think I’ve proven that.

  • What the craziest thing you have done on a dare?

The craziest thing I’ve done on a dare… **smiles** Not sure how crazy it is, but once, I stood up on the checkout counter at Wal-Mart. Started yelling that they needed a cleanup on aisle five-ninety-two. For the record, the Wal-Mart employees don’t necessarily like that.

  • If not this line of work, then what?

It would always be this line of work. I can’t see myself doing anything else.

  • Favorite type of car?

Corvette.

  • Boys with Tattoos or no?

Either or. And I guess it depends on the tattoo. I’ve seen some that I don’t particularly care for. I tried to talk Max into getting one that said “Property of Courtney”, but he said no. I’m still working on him though.

  • Do you have any tattoos?

Nope. But I’ve been tossing around the idea for a while. It’s hard to come up with an idea for something that’s so … permanent. I’m sure I’ll think of something one of these days.

  • What’s your go to drink when you’re out on the town?

Fireball and RumChata – I’ll let you look up what that’s known as. **smiles**

  • Last question, ideal Saturday night?

I’m a fan of going out to the clubs with my friends and I’ve got a favorite that I frequent – Devil’s Playground.

Excerpt:

Courtney spun around, her gaze slamming into his.

“Check on me? Why the hell would you wanna do that?”

Because it was an excuse to see her. But that wasn’t what Max told her. “I wanted to make sure you were all right.”

Courtney huffed as she returned to pouring the vodka into a glass, adding 7-Up from a can sitting on the table. Max’s gaze instantly strayed to the extra glass, and his frustration rose again.

She tossed him a glare over her shoulder. “Oh, you’re referrin’ to when you blew some guy’s brains out in the middle of your office? Don’t you have a dead body to clean up or somethin’?”

He didn’t say a word. His rule was that he’d never own up to anything. He didn’t feel safe anywhere that wasn’t home, never knew when someone was trying to trap him. And of all people, Max wasn’t delusional enough to believe Courtney wouldn’t turn on him with the right motivation. Ultimately, she was one of the good guys. And that was why they never had been able to find a middle ground. It was more difficult than it appeared considering they were at opposite ends of the spectrum—middle ground was just too far away for either of them.

Not to mention, arguing with Courtney was moot. Max knew from experience that she would never let up, which was why he’d given up long ago.

“Oh, right. You have people for that,” she continued, turning to face him again before taking a sip from her glass. “I’d offer you a drink, but then you might think you can stay.”

“I’m gonna stay,” he informed her.

Courtney’s eyes narrowed on him, and Max’s body instinctively reacted, hardening instantaneously.

“You’re not gonna stay,” she retorted, her tone clipped. “Not today, not tomorrow. Not ever.”

Max shrugged out of his leather jacket, folding it across the arm of the sofa as he moved closer.

“I’m serious, Max,” Courtney said, her eyes widening as she backed up until her ass hit the table. “You’re not stayin’. RT’ll be watchin’ my house until you leave. It’s not an option.”

Max continued to stalk her slowly until he was standing only a few inches away from her. Unable to resist, he cupped her face in his hands, enjoying the silky smoothness of her skin against his palms.

Damn, how he’d missed her. It’d been damn near a full year since the last time he’d touched her, since the last time he’d made love to her. Although touching her now … it was as though not a minute had passed since that fateful day.

“I’m stayin’,” he said softly.

Courtney shook her head, opened her mouth, but then snapped it closed. She wanted to argue; it was evident in the lines that creased her forehead.

Leaning forward, Max tested the waters, allowing his lips to brush hers lightly. Even that was nearly more than he could handle. It’d been too damn long since he’d touched her, tasted her, loved her. And fuck if he didn’t want to do it all again. Right here. Right fucking now.

“Max, please,” Courtney pleaded quietly. “Please don’t do this.”

“Do what?” he questioned roughly, pulling back and allowing his eyes to slide over her beautiful face, down the slender column of her neck, where he noticed the rapid thump of her pulse.

“We’re through,” she stated, her tone holding a hint of conviction.

“So you’ve said.” In fact, Courtney had told him they were over many times during the year they’d been together. And for the year that followed, right up until this very moment, Max had thought about her every single day, about the way she’d ended things so abruptly the last time. Didn’t matter that he’d called her bluff and that had technically been the reason they’d gone their separate ways.

Had it not been for the crazy shit he had to deal with on a daily basis, he might’ve actually taken the time to play her games. But there was another problem with that. He was fucking tired of playing, which was the only reason he’d allowed her to walk away then.

And that was the real reason he was there tonight. He wanted to know whether or not this was truly over. For him, it wasn’t. There wasn’t a chance in hell that he’d ever be able to get over her. Probably not in his lifetime. But that didn’t mean that moving forward wasn’t possible. With or without her.

If she didn’t want him, he’d move on. He had business arrangements dangling in the wind, one in particular that was entirely dependent on where he stood with Courtney.

“Tell me you want me to leave, Courtney. Tell me to go, and I’ll never darken your doorstep again. You’ll never have to see me.”

Max could see the surprise in Courtney’s eyes, in the way her throat worked when she swallowed hard. He’d never made her that promise, never told her that he’d willingly let her go, although he’d spent the last year staying away from her. He’d had eyes on her the entire time; he knew every single move she’d made during those months. He knew for a fact that Courtney had never brought another man home with her, nor had she ever gone home with a man. Had she made that choice, Max wasn’t sure how things would be at this moment, but more than likely, there’d be another dead asshole buried six feet under.

The point was, she hadn’t.

“Tell me that’s what you want, and I’ll do it, Courtney. But know this … if you send me away this time…” Max took a deep breath, exhaled. “I won’t come back. Whatever this is between us, it’ll never die, never go away completely, and we’ll both have to live out the rest of our lives with the decision that you make right here. Tonight.”

“I want…”


The pause that followed stole the air from the room.

Review

I was so excited to get my hands on Max and Courtney’s story after having caught a glimpse of their complex relationship in Nicole’s previous series. Two incredibly diverse and complicated characters that were as different as night and day; just as equally one lived in perpetual darkness doing bad deeds while the other was often referred to as being on the good guys side, living in the light and fighting the good fight.

What was so good about Beautifully Brutal? Well, where do I even begin? The enigma that is Max continued to unnerve, perplex and astound me from start to finish. Sinister and depraved one minute but hurting and emotional in the next breath when dealing with the romantic entanglements between Courtney and himself. He was sweet and sour. Unforgiving but thoughtful. Hateful and vindictive but full of so much love and devotion for Courtney, it was as though her presence in his life brought him peace and serenity in a world that involved murder, smuggling, guns and shady business deals. Courtney may have brought some good into his life but Max manages to coax a little bit of darkness into hers. I loved Courtney. She was a strong ballsy independent protagonist who not only had integrity but willpower and determination when it came to resisting someone she knew would be bad for her, time and again she walked away and buried whatever feelings she had no matter the cost or pain.

‘Max didn’t respond, just listened to her breathe, wishing she’d remain on the phone for the rest of his life so he could hear her. It was hard enough that he couldn’t hold her in his arms. Listening to her breathe would suffice for a little while.

“I should-”

“No, don’t go,” he said in a tortured whisper. “Don’t hang up. Just breathe, Courtney. It’s…” He choked back the emotion. “Just breathe. Please.” Courtney didn’t respond nor did she hang up, and he could hear her breathe, which was all he needed as the night descended around him. If only their time together could’ve been more like this. Less chaos, more peace.’

When a book is peppered with brilliance such as this is it any wonder Nicole Edwards has so many fans. Her writing seems to gain strength and maturity with each book she writes and with Beautifully Brutal she not only manages to showcase her excellent character development but also her innate ability to bring drama, heartache, action, steam and a well of emotion and angst to the plot without it feeling disconnected or disjointed from the truth of the story.

There was a small annoyance for me half way through the book that involved a bit of an archaic double standard when it came to sex post-relationship (I won’t spoil it for you but you’ll know which part I’m talking about when you read it). I just wish Courtney had stepped up to the plate here and gave some more of her snappy take-no-prisoners attitude but other than that one minor blip this is certainly one of, if not the best Nicole Edwards books to come out. It was fast-paced, gripping and heart-stoppingly beautiful, a modern day mobster Romeo and Juliet and from the small taste we got of Max’s wild and frisky sister, I’d say we are in for one helluva scintillating book next go round.

I pretty much love anything that Lori Foster writes.  Her books are sweet and easy reads with a good bit of sexy.  So I knew I would enjoy this short novella.

Strangers to each other, Lisa and Gray have one night of explosive passion.  Weeks later they meet again while Lisa is home in Buckhorn for the summer.  Their chemistry is still off the charts and the two obviously still want each other.  While they attempt to keep things strictly professional between one another, you get some hilarious Buckhorn fun complete with fabulous characters that I was happy to revisit.  You also get a bit of mystery!

I do really enjoy a one night stand turn romance so this one was really good.  It was a fun, sweet, and sexy novella but as always with a Lori Foster book, I wanted more!

As I climb the stairs to the strip club of the
Syndicate’s three-story headquarters, located alongside the North Shore of
Chicago’s suburbs, I already recognize voices coming from the room at the end
of the hall.
I’m greeted by Luca and James, who are in the middle
of the room beside the rounded burgundy sofa. I nod to both of them and fix my
focus on the unknown woman with an attractive bob standing next to James. I’m
usually not a fan of women with short hair, but who is this delectable creature?
James takes his cue to introduce us. “Adriano, meet
Camilla. She’ll be working here at the club from now on.”
Why did he suddenly
hire someone new? We’re not understaffed.
I can’t help but stare at her. My god, her legs go on
forever; she’s almost as tall as I am, and I’m over six feet. I inspect her
body slowly, like no one is watching, and when I reach her face, I’m pleasantly
stunned that she’s challenging me with an arc of her perfectly shaped eyebrow.
Her eyes are deep brown, heavily lashed, and slightly tilted up at the corners.
Her cheeks are delicately boned. She looks absolutely appetizing in a tight,
black knee-length dress. Sexy, yet not too revealing. In other words, she’s
smokin’ hot!
“Camilla, nice to meet you.” I go old-school, take her
hand in mine, and kiss her knuckles.
Luca hides an eye-roll, but I catch it and grin.
“Adriano,” she says huskily.
Her voice is hoarse. Hoarse in the sexiest way I’ve
ever encountered. I didn’t expect that sensual voice to accompany this striking
woman who smells like vanilla. With her, my obsession with vanilla ignited.
“Welcome to our little establishment.” Then I address
James while holding on to her hand, “What will she be doing here?”
“Bartending,” James answers.
“Then I better show her the ropes.” I let the pad of
my thumb swirl over her fingers, and she shivers noticeably; she’s not immune
to my charms.
And I guide this interesting woman to the bar, which
is a stainless steel and black granite area that’s open at each end and set up
like a juice bar.
She speaks before we step behind it. “I can make
drinks.”
Her simple statement has me confused.
“You look like you don’t believe I can tend the bar,”
she elaborates.
Oh no, sweetheart, I’m
not doubting your qualifications. I’m just staggered by the sex vibes you’re
throwing around with that voice and those gorgeous lean legs.
I smirk while extending my hand, inviting her behind
the bar. “No, I believe you.”
That was the first night I tried to get Cam into my
bed. I failed that night and for over three months after and almost gave up my
chase, but it was too much fun to try to capture her. I don’t even think she liked me at first.

Review

Since For Adriano is book 3 of the Chicago Syndicate series, I suggest reading the previous books. After reading, For Luca, I was anxious to find out what’s going to happen in the next installment. But in all honesty, I struggled with reading this book in the beginning. Perhaps it was just me, I was piecing the story from what I had previously read it was finding my way through it. After I took a break and continued reading, the flow picked back up and I was good as gold. Adriano is a hard man to love. I couldn’t get enough of him but I also wanted to shake him a few times. I love Cam, this girl has been through so much and really made me feel for her. And to find out that she has something important going for her, just made me so delighted. There’s a lot of back-and-forth between Adriano and Cam. But these are two tortured souls searching for a way out. These two have chemistry, that’s for sure. Their passion in the bedroom is so hot, and Adriano is a very giving man. Now this can’t be a mafia a book with out a bit of guns, drugs, sex, torture and blood. So be warned when I say that some things gave me a face while reading. All in all, I did enjoy this book, once I got on track for me. I give 4 smooches for Soraya Naomi’s For Adriano.

Let’s start by saying that True Devotion is a rocker book done right. Choosing not to focus on the trials and tribulations of being a famous rocker and instead focus on the character development and relationship between Simon (the sexy rocker) and Devon (his band mate and best friend’s little sister.) Sexy, hilarious and angsty True Devotion was a surprise that made my week. I really enjoyed the first book in the series so I knew I would like True Devotion but in no way was I expecting a book I would completely fall in love with and see myself reading again and again.

“Who knows if this thing between us can ever be more than giving each other orgasms and a hard time, but in the hush of now, I don’t care.”

We got glimpses of Devon and Simon in the first book, constantly bickering, picking on each other all the while flirting shamelessly. It was obvious from the beginning that these two were attracted to each other but fighting it scared for the change in dynamic to their group. After two years of waiting Simon knows the time to make her his is finally here and all he has to do is get rough around the edges, Devon, on track with his plan.

“Two way street, sweetheart. If you want it rough in the morning and gentle at night, I’ll give it to you. If you want me to talk dirty to you for hours and then lick you for days, that sounds awesome. If you want to play naughty bread baker and horny flour delivery guy, I’m game.”

Simon is the nerdy rocker of my dreams. Geeky at home and a rocker when in the spotlight he is silly and fun and one hell of a great dirty talker to boot. I loved every moment I spent falling for him in the pages of this book and when it was over I was already eager to read it again. Devon fights turning this sexy fling into a real relationship but no one is immune to the charm that is Simon and soon she finds herself unable to stay away. What I loved most about Devon is that she is not perfect by a long shot. She makes mistakes and often takes too long to see what we saw all along but watching her grow and accept both Simon and herself as she is a joy and felt very real.

“You’ve been my Devon since the first second I met you. I just needed you to get on board with the fucking plan.”

Liora Blake is quickly establishing herself as an author that I follow and eagerly await her next release. Each book I read by her is better than the last and I cannot wait to see what she gives us next.

The daughter of a famous rock star and a famous rock ‘n roll drummer, Lucky owns a karaoke bar, named after her, that was purchased by her drummer father when he left the road and the rock star lifestyle behind to put down some roots and give his daughter young daughter some stability. Life on the road, living on a tour bus, had been the norm for Lucky and her dad, and when he made the decision to leave it behind, Lucky’s mom chose to continue pursuing her career as a famous rocker.

Flynn Beckham is a rock star in the making. Gorgeous, humble, sweet and sexy, this man is a talented musician. Lucky thought she was in love, she thought she had everything that she wanted, she thought she was living her dream. Until she met Flynn.

Flynn was smitten with Lucky from their very first meeting. Those feelings only intensified as they got to know each other while on tour with Easy Ryder. Lucky is confused by her feelings for Flynn – she’s in love with Dylan, right? – but she can’t help the attraction she feels for him. Over the month that they’re on tour and working together, her feelings continue to grow, her attraction continues to deepen, and she is very slowly giving in to it.

“The question isn’t what are we going to do. It’s what are you going to do. Because I’m right here waiting for you to figure it out.”

Lucky is consumed by guilt, Flynn is consumed with desire, and Dylan is consumed with his own ego. He is not a very nice guy, he’s got a monster-sized ego, but the aging rocker seems to be almost jealous of Flynn’s youth, good looks and talent that rivals his own, and, as a result, he treats Flynn terribly. He treats Lucky almost indifferently, but yet still possessively. She is the perfect candidate to be his wife: she’s the child of rock and roll royalty, she’s laid back and she’s gorgeous. Even with all of that, it’s not enough for him to stop living as a single rock god, though he does so more discreetly. Readers should know that this story contains infidelity, which is a big trigger for a lot of people. I’m typically not a fan of cheating in the books I read; however, I won’t avoid what looks to be an interesting book otherwise simply because it contains cheating. Vi Keeland handled this issue well, and it’s truly an essential part of the plot line. I was not bothered by it at all, and I believe that most people will take into consideration all of the circumstances that play into this piece of the plot.

“We’re two souls colliding, rocking as one person, doing something I never realized I hadn’t done before. Making love.”

Vi Keeland created a sweet and swoony rocker in Flynn and a truly likable heroine in Lucky. It was a well-written story, and it gets a solid 4 smooches from me!
