Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Lord

I fucking hated people who stole from me. Which was ironic, considering the only thing that had kept me from starving as a kid had been picking pockets and snatching purses. I dropped my elbows to the desk and rubbed a hand over my buzzed head.

“Goddamn, karma’s a bitch.”

“She the bitch you fucked last night, bro?” The leather of my office couch creaked as Mathieu sank his tall, lanky frame into it.

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call women ‘bitches,’ boy?”

My words were met with a long sigh from Mathieu. Ever since he’d walked into Chains and tried to grab a guitar and run back out the door—only to be tackled to the ground by yours truly—he’d been a fixture in my life. To be fair, his choices had been to work off the price of what he’d attempted to steal, or go directly to the nearest cop shop. The entire situation had been such a blast from the past, I’d caught myself smiling when I should’ve been glaring and scaring the piss out of the kid. But apparently I’d done an okay job of it because he’d decided starting a rap sheet at seventeen wasn’t a good plan. Thank fuck. Almost two years later, the kid was my right hand.

And now that Chains was mine, someone was stealing from me—but not just someone. An employee. Someone I should’ve been able to trust. The cameras I had installed on her day off had already paid for themselves.

I rolled my head from side to side, cracking my neck. I hated firing people. It never got easier. And this time? This time it was going to be even worse … because there would be tears. And quite possibly claws.

Pushing up from the chair, I strode to the door without looking at Mathieu. Over my shoulder, I tossed, “You might want to stay here; Brianna’s ass is about to get canned.”

“For real?” His words followed me out, but I didn’t bother to reply.

Every time I stepped foot onto the shop floor, a feeling of pride surged through me—pride that I’d helped build this business into one that was not only honest, but profitable. At least, it was profitable when one of my employees wasn’t skimming off the till and messing with my bank deposits.

Finger twirling in her long, dark extensions and gum snapping between her teeth, Brianna flipped the pages of a magazine with a giant black Sharpie in one hand, circling shit. Probably shit she wanted to buy with the money she’d been stealing from me. The store was empty, which made what I was about to do a little easier.

“Bree, need a few minutes.”

Her head popped up, lips pursing as she took me in. “You can have all the time you need, boss.” Her gaudy fake eyelashes batted at me in what I assumed was supposed to be a sexy move. I stowed the urge to tell her to save it for someone whose dick got hard at the sight of her … but since I was about to fire her, why add insult to injury? The woman had been unsuccessfully trying to add her notch to my bedpost since I’d hired her. Bringing her on had been a mistake, and I’d known it from the minute she’d walked in the door, but a friend had called in a favor.

“Boss? You had something to say?” she prompted.

I watched her, not speaking.

She stopped the hair twirling and capped the Sharpie, resituating herself on the stool and folding her hands in her lap.

“Lord?”

“You’re done.”

Bree’s dark eyes flew wide. “Done? You mean done for the day?”

“Done. For good. Get your shit and get out.”

Bree lost the innocent pose as she crossed her arms and stared me down. “Not until you tell me why.”

In two long strides, I closed the distance between the register and me and pressed my hands to the counter.

“I gave you a job. Gave you a paycheck you didn’t have to suck a dick to get. But that wasn’t enough for you. You had to have more, and instead of coming to me and asking for a raise, you decided to make it happen yourself.”

The color faded from her face, leaving her mocha-colored skin sallow. “Wh-what?”

“Get your shit.”

“I swear, I didn’t—”

“Don’t fucking lie to me. I can show you the tape if you want to see what I saw.”

Her lower lip started to wobble. It wasn’t going to work. I’d given her the benefit of the doubt, hoped I was wrong or it was just a one-time thing. But she’d gotten too bold.

“But I need this—”

I cut her off. She wasn’t even going to deny it. Not that she could. We both knew she’d done it, and I wasn’t in the mood to listen to her beg or justify her actions. Even though she didn’t know it, I’d already given her a second chance. And all that had done was cost me even more than I could afford to lose. “I needed someone to work the shop—someone who wasn’t going to fuck me over and steal from me. You weren’t capable of that, so you’re out. Now get your shit.”

“But—”

“Save your breath, Bree. I ain’t listening unless you’re here to tell me you’ve got all the money you’ve taken, and you’re putting it right back where it belongs.”

Her face twisted into an angry glare even as the tears started falling. “You … you don’t understand.”

“No, I really don’t understand.” I crossed my arms and waited her out. When she realized the water works weren’t changing my decision, she spun off the stool, grabbed her giant purple purse from behind the counter, and stalked toward the door.

“You get all self-righteous with me about a little cash while you basically steal from people? Giving ‘em twenty dollars for their shit? Like you’re one to judge.”

A little cash? She’d skimmed enough to buy a nice used car, and I’d been too trusting to even realize it until the numbers hadn’t added up in a big way.

She slowed near the guitars at the front of the store and malicious glee lit her eyes.

She wouldn’t.

Oh, but she did.

Bree grabbed a guitar and swung it toward the rack as the chimes above the front door jangled. Wood crashed against wood, and two female screeches erupted.

Shit … if she injured a customer…

I charged Bree and ripped the guitar from her hands before she could swing again. A swirl of red hair caught my attention as the other woman dodged out of the strike zone.

Bree struggled against my hold, and I wondered if I was going to end up with a face full of the acrylic claws tearing at my arms. “Let go of me, you asshole!”

“Whoa, boss. Getting the door for ya.” Mathieu bolted across the shop and yanked the door open again. I hustled Bree out and set her free on the sidewalk.

She spun to face Mathieu and me. “You’re gonna regret this,” she hissed. “I swear, you will.”

A soft laugh came from the open door. “From what I’ve seen, I highly doubt it.”

Bree opened her mouth to spew something else, but I shut her down. “Get gone. I don’t ever wanna see you near my shop again.”

Bree’s flinty eyes narrowed as she shouldered her purse. “Fuck you, Lord. You think you’re better than me? Not a chance. You’re just thievin’ street scum. Fuck you.”

“And now she’s getting repetitious,” the husky female voice commented from behind me.

Lip curling in disgust, Bree turned and marched toward the corner, never looking back.

“Her exit could totally use some work, but all-in-all, that was one hell of a welcome.”

I turned to survey the woman standing in the doorway of Chains. Even without a photographic memory, I didn’t think I’d ever forget this particular pose: one arm braced on the doorframe and the other propped on her hip, a green dress hugging curves that had my entire body sitting up and taking notice. Matched with her long, curling red hair, she was a goddamn knockout. What the hell is she doing here?

“You lost, sweet thing?”

She stepped onto the sidewalk and tore the HELP WANTED sign off the bottom corner of the front window. Holding it between two fingers, she smiled. “Nope. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’m your newest employee.”

verite excerpt

He stood there patiently, grinning as he waited for me to move through the doorway or answer him, and pinned me with his unusual blue eyes, so pale in his handsome face against his deep brown skin. His gaze seared right through me, just like it had earlier, before dinner in the courtyard.
Completely unnerved, I didn’t respond. His size was daunting, his large frame loomed over the threshold, and I was struck speechless. Uncertain whether it was his obvious good looks that threw me, or the overtly friendly wide grin on display, I simply stood there for a moment, trying to figure out his angle.
As I took in his long athletic shorts, tight gray athletic hoodie, and the pair of spiky Air Jordan slides on his feet, his left eyebrow cocked up at me like I was the next sideshow. Well, I’d already played that act countless times at home, including but not limited to last year when I was caught with the professor’s dick deep inside me. Now I was all about slipping under the radar, getting by silently and with little fuss.
“Hey, you okay?” he asked, his deep voice interrupting my thoughts. “I’m talking to you . . . you coming in? I’m over here holding the door.”
His pale blue eyes scanned my brown ones as his smile faded. I imagined him knowing who I was and what I did, perhaps mentally undressing me one piece of clothing at a time, wanting to give the slut a whirl.
Oh God, was my name being passed around—again?
Self-disgust consumed me, spurring me to action. “Um, yeah. I am,” I answered, averting my gaze as I shifted my backpack up on my shoulder and stomped through the doorway.
I turned ever so slightly to witness him ducking to fit through the doorframe. It was crazy how insanely tall this guy was. Obviously, he was a basketball player, probably with a huge ego to boot.
I managed to mutter, “Thanks,” as I swept past him, and the door clanged shut behind us.
“Bad day?” he called after me.
What was with him being all smiling and friendly? Was he for real, or was he trying to bait me? I couldn’t help my self-doubt; skepticism was woven so deeply into my personality, I questioned everyone’s motives.
“Bad life,” I tossed back without thinking. For some reason, I felt the need to share my feelings with this stranger, and it scared the shit out of me.
So I did what came naturally to me—I ran. As I sprinted toward the elevator, I caught him heading toward the staircase out of the corner of my eye. I got off on my floor feeling relieved until I heard a heavy pair of footsteps coming around the corner.
Shit.

That’s me—Tingly Simmons—athlete, foreign-language major, professor lover, obsessed idiot girl. Definitely not a frat rat or sorority slut. I’ve never even played beer pong.

When that relationship fell apart, so did I.

Review

“You’re only looking for an easy way out because I make you feel something, T. I can’t believe I got to spell this out, but I like you. You got this spunk that you bury deep inside you, but when you think no one is looking, it shines.”

Verite by Rachel Blaufeld is a New Adult novel told in first person. A twist on the time old tale of the a college relationship between a promiscuous person and a much less experienced person, in Verite we meet Tingly, she is a runner for her college track team and last year got caught having an affair with her much older and engaged French professor. Being benched for a year and having become a school joke, Tingly’s tough outer shell becomes Rock Solid.

“Want you, all of you. Not once or twice, or just for fun. Want all of you, Rex. The naughty and the nice, especially the nice, because I’m scared to death I’m gonna screw up and not be the man you need when it comes to the naughty,”

Enter sexy tall and impossibly sweet Tiberius. Tiberius is the perfect balance to Tingly. Where she gets scared easily and runs he stands firm and unaffraid. He knows he can be the man she needs and will do anything to prove that to her. He is possibly the most patient man written and just alpha enough when he needs to be. He calls her on her bullshit and never backs down. Determined to be more than a quick fuck he shows her how much better everything is when it means something to you.

“Sex wasn’t a placeholder for emotion for Tiberius, and he refused to allow it to be for me.”

The best part of Verite (besides Tiberius) was the extended cast of characters. Her roommates and his teammates provided both support and at times a hint of humor to break up some serious situations. His boys are loyal to a fault and the girls grew on me more and more as the book went on. Tingly has little self worth going into this story but between Tiberius and the people around her she finds that she is more than the daughter of self entitled upper class parents who care more about getting their hands on the inheritance she got from her grandparents than her. Verite is a story of personal growth and learning to accept our past and always believe in hope for our future

“Everything was better when it meant something.”

This was the second book of Rachel’s I have read and I enjoy her writing style and the unique characters she develops. I really hope to see more from the side characters in this story in the future as well as I look forward to reading some of her other books now too. If you like New Adult books with drama, growth and a sports theme than give this one a try. Plus, the ending! Made the whole book for me!

Adrenaline. suspense. Shock

That’s what comes to mind with this book. This was a helluva ride! You need to read Hidden in lies first as this is the conclusion to the story. We pick up where the first book left us, in utter shock! The situation with Elizabeth, Cal and Alex was just starting to unravel in book one and in book two it completely spins in and out of control and of course malicious Cal is at the center of it.

“What else can he say? I don’t think any of us truly knew the type of monster we were dealing with coming into this.  There were so many variables that none of us could have accounted for.”

In the first book I was torn with Elizabeth. I had a hard time accepting the choices she made. I just didn’t empathize with her as much but in this one I connected with her more. Between the end of the last book and through this one she was really up against some horrendous things that make you root for her. She grows in strength and character so much in this one.
“But when I look in my eyes, I see the woman I used to be. The fire, the strength, the determination.  Yes, she will come back. It might not be today or tomorrow, but she’s going to fight to overcome the shit that’s been thrown her way. And when she does, Cal better watch out.”

This was definitely my favourite out of the two. It completely sucked me in and had me hanging on every single word. I loved the way the POV’s were done this time around. It was fresh and exciting. The intensity to this story had my heart racing but there was also funny and sweet moments in between. There are many people connected to this story and we learn so much as it unravels. By the end of the first book we learn there is a lot more to Alex and his side is told for sure! This is a whirlwind of a story and was the perfect conclusion to this story.

“Come here,” Sarah said over her shoulder from the safe distance of the table. “I’ll show you how to roll out the dough.”

Finally away from his crazy sexy body, she prayed her hormones would settle down so she could focus. She leaned across and used her rolling pin to slowly press forward, putting her whole body into one long motion and back again, concentrating on smoothing the dough. Again, she bent over the table, straining a little, pushing the pin all the way over the dough as far as she could reach. When she rolled back, she bumped into a hard wall. Jamie stood behind her, trapping her against the table.

Stunned and staring at the dough on the table, she sucked a breath of air when she felt his strong arms reach around her. She didn’t breathe the entire time it took Jamie to stroke her arms all the way down before covering her hands with his on each side of the rolling pin. Turning slightly into his shoulder, feeling the softness of his T-shirt, she snuck a whiff of heaven.

He rested his chin on her shoulder, and breathed on the back of her neck. The rough fabric of his jeans pressed against her back. He relaxed even closer behind her and her stomach flipped. She’d envisioned training Jamie Santino in her kitchen hundreds of times since getting the word from Danica, but never thought anything even close to this would happen. He exhaled into her ear, and she shuddered.

Is this really happening? Sarah didn’t dare move, wishing she could freeze time and save the exact second her world merged into his. In this solitary moment everything changed. For the rest of her life, she would never look at a rolling pin the same way.

Review

I had such high expectations for this book after reading the fabulous attention grabbing blurb, indeed even the going into the actual reading of the first chapter I was hooked, it was edgy and suspenseful with enough mystery and intrigue injected into the plot that initially I was dying to uncover all of the sordid details and secrets but something got lost in translation. It never kept up with that burst of energy and suspense, somewhere around the halfway mark everything took a slight nose dive and rather than a steady pace we seemed to have been trapped in a never ending loop of tears, running away, hiding and a few unbelievable plot twists.

The two main protagonists worked well up to a point. Ellie our intrepid heroine has suffered severely throughout her young life and as a result is contending with a pretty severe case of PTSD in which Jack our hero with a secret identity, attempts to help her overcome, through perseverance and with the aid of his hero complex he forms a friendship with the struggling woman which inevitably becomes more. However in the entirety of the book, they kiss only once. That is literally it. No more kisses. No sex and not even an inkling of sexual tension in the air, it was too tame and focused entirely too much on unnecessary details.

‘“Jack, I…,” she started to interrupt, lifting her head to look me in the eyes.

“No Ellie, it’s okay,” I shushed, quietly. “This is really the only way you’ll get better. Don’t be afraid to let it out. I don’t mind one bit. So…,” I rubbed a hand up and down her back as I started singing again, “Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing ‘cause every little thing is gonna be alright.” Leaning her head back down into the crook of my neck Ellie relaxed into me and took a deep breath, clearing her throat. “Thanks, Jack.”

All the elements needed to make this a great story are there but like I mentioned, something gets lost along the way. The majority of the book is basically Ellie locking herself away in a room, crying as Jack tries to talk her round. Thankfully around the three quarter mark it does pick up again with a lot more danger and action and where a few questions finally get answered only to leave us with more questions again as the blasted book ends on a cliffhanger with no resolutions in sight. It was fairly well written and I can definitely detect a lot of potential but unfortunately it wasn’t very apparent in the lay out or the pace, it seemed a bit scattered and erratic.

Synopsis

Kane and Helene were the best of friends until a nightmare devastated them… Hopes were destroyed, dreams shattered, a budding teenage love torn to pieces. Eleven years later their lives are nothing like they once were. Time has changed them … and not for the better.

Helene is smart, driven, and accomplished—her education and achievements a smoke screen hiding the frigid and fragile child wounded long ago.

Kane is equally obsessed with his coping mechanisms—fighting … drinking … screwing … compulsively destroying himself one vice at a time.

When their paths collide again, their past becomes an obstacle no coping mechanism in the world can protect them from. But confronting the past so they can heal in the present is no easy task. Can Kane reach Helene and recapture what used to burn so warmly between them, or will his own self destructive demons pull her into his hell?

A woman determined to look forward. A man always looking back. A love desperate to be restored.

“You’re the brightest, warmest star in my universe. You’ll never be less than everything to me.”

WARNING: This book contains darker subject matter and violent content that may be difficult for some readers.

Review

This is a second  chance at first love kind of story, but with emotionally gut wrenching twists. Seventeen and best friends, unlikely friends, but still best of friends. The attraction was there and they had all the time in the world to explore that. Life has other plans for them though when that option is cruelly torn from them as they are forced into a gruesome experience that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

“You can’t?” she asked incredulously. “We shared the worst… We share it still… every day,” she half spoke, half cried the words as her lips trembled. “And you can’t?”
This book tore me apart. It has very tough subject matter that is woven throughout the book and that may be difficult for some readers. I had to put it down once or twice I’d recommend to read with a friend! Helene and Kane are both at work just like any other night and they never expected it to pan out the way they did, for their lives to be completely turned upside down and inside out. It’s an extremely traumatic experience they both suffer. They both have eachother to get through it,  that is until Kane ups and disappears for eleven years when his father has a stroke and he has to return to town. No one else knows about what they went through but each other. The attraction is still there between them both but they have dealt with the experience differently and have grown differently.
“If that s*&^%head winks at you one more time I’m going to punch him. I wink at you, not him.”
When Kane and Helene do finally come face to face, they soon can’t stay away and go forward trying to work on the relationship they should have had. They knew it was never going to be simple especially with the way they both reacted to what they went through. Kane turned to drinking, fighting and meaningless sex. Helene threw herself into her work and education life. They don’t deal with it maybe the way they should have, and this could well play a part in their possible downfall.
“Can’t we just forget about the monsters,” he whispered, his lips touching and teasing my earlobe. “All I want is to remember us.”

Their story isn’t an easy one, it’s the kind of one that will possibly rip you apart.  This story, their relationship was so fragile. You get sucked in almost immediately. I’m a smut addict, and don’t get me wrong the sex was hot but most of the time I felt like I was imposing on such an intimate, fragile thing that should only be shared between them two. I have never felt like that reading a book! It wasn’t awkward or cringey, it was just something special between these two.  This book was just really emotional in so many ways. This story needed to be handled with extreme care, especially surrounding the subject matter and I think Elizabeth Finn done just that. Kane gutted me. I’ve never wanted to hug and protect someone so much, never mind a fictional character. These two were really put through the test of life, and what a cruel test it was. There was the theme of philosophy running through this story and it surprised me how much it interested me and how much I liked it. And I did really like it, until I didn’t, until it really got me thinking and I wanted to scream at the theories and how it wasn’t fair! I was glued to this all day, it’s a story that will stick out for me amongst the others and even though it emotionally drained me in ways, the ending made up for every bit of what the characters had been through. I’m having a major book hangover!!
