Blurb

The New York Times bestselling author of Slow Burn turns up the heat when a sexy bet turns into so much more….

Hawkin Play, the bad boy rock star with a good guy heart, has lived a lifetime of cleaning up after his twin brother’s mistakes. Hunter’s most recent screwup could land Hawke in jail and risk the band’s future. Hawke agrees to guest lecture at a local college to stay in the judge’s good graces—and a bet with his bandmate to seduce his sexy teaching assistant is icing on the cake.

Quinlan Westin is harder to bed than Hawke imagined. She knows his type and is determined to avoid the rocker at all costs—even if their attraction runs deeper than simple lust.

Just as Hawke might finally be winning over the girl, his brother has other plans. When Hunter realizes his twin finally has a weakness, he’ll stop at nothing to take advantage….

Quinlan

“Now you guys need to get going so you have time for Quin to give you the complete rundown,” Professor Stevens says.

Of course she has no idea the double entendre she’s just given Hawkin about me giving him a complete rundown, but I know Hawke catches it. I manage to resist the urge to stomp my feet in frustration and storm out of her office like a toddler. Instead I give her a tight smile before turning and walking out of the office and then the department.

I stand there in the sunshine, waiting for him to get his ass in gear and quit wasting my time. When I finally hear the door open I just start walking and the sound of his boots is the only inclination that he’s following.

“I’ve got longer legs than you Trixie,” he chides from a few feet back. “But feel free to keep swinging your hips like that, and I’ll stay right here behind you and enjoy the show.”

I bristle at the comment. At the moment there’s no authority to be respectful of, no damage that can’t be undone.

“A show?” The pitch of my voice escalates as I whirl around to face him—sunglasses on, hair disheveled, and I wish I hadn’t turned around because damn, he’s just that devastatingly fine. I’m quiet for a beat as we both appraise each other from behind darkened lenses. His dark hair, tanned skin, and cocky smirk pulls at those parts of me I don’t want to be pulled. “You want to talk about a show.” I grit the words out, trying to push my physical attraction to him from my mind. “Let’s talk about your little performance for Dr. Stevens.”

“I know. I’m good, huh? Sorry but a man’s got to do what he’s got to do . . . Besides, I wasn’t done with you yet.”

My mouth falls lax and I’m momentarily flabbergasted. “Done with me yet?” I sputter the words when I’ve recovered my wits at his arrogance run amuck . . . But I can’t deny the little flutter in my belly at his comment. There’s just something about him aside from the whole I’m a rock-star thing, that makes me desire him in a way I can’t put into words.

“Yep.” He says casually as he unwraps a Starburst and pops it into his mouth. And I hate that I’m fascinated with watching his mouth suck on the sweet candy. Luckily he speaks so I can distract myself from the captivating sight. “I’m pretty sure you have a usefulness . . . I’m just trying to figure out what that is.” He licks his lips. “Well, besides the obvious, that is . . .” Smirk is handily in place and I hate that ache starting to simmer in my core.

“Why don’t you go suck a—”

“Relax,” he says, angling his head to the side and emitting a laugh as he steps closer to me. “I’m just teasing you. You’re so damn easy to rile up and so hard to resist. Plus you’re even hotter when you’re pissed. I like it.” He shrugs an apology, hands shoved deep in the pockets of his jeans with a sheepish grin that softens all those hard edges and makes me sigh with the contrast of characteristics. He holds a red Starburst out to me as a peace offering. “C’mon, you know you want to be the star to my burst.”

We’ve stopped, my hands are on my hips, and the sun is falls around us as hewaits for me to react to his innocent little comment. Deep down I know I’m screwed. I feel an urge to smile but immediately realign my defenses. The contradiction he presents, the smooth with the rough, is the one thing that I always fall for when it comes to men.

And I’m not going to fall for Hawkin Play.

Twisted Bond by Emma Hart Release Blitz

TwistedBond_highI’m an Italian-Texan woman in a family full of cops. I’m passionate and shoot before I think. You only f*ck with me if you’re stupid.

Photograph cheating spouses. Hand over the evidence. Cash my check.

That was my plan when I returned home to Holly Woods, Texas, and became a private investigator.

Finding the dead body in my dumpster? Yeah… Given the choice, I think I would have opted out of that little discovery, especially since all three of my brothers are cops. And my Italian grandmother is sure the reason I’m single is because of my job.

Of course, my connection to the victim is entirely coincidental. Until I’m hired by her husband to investigate her murder and shoved bang-smack into the path of Detective Drake Nash.

My nemesis, a persistent pain in my ass, and one hell of a sexy son of a bitch.

Shame he still holds a grudge from that time I shot him in the foot twelve years ago, or we could have something. In another life.

So now all I have to do is avoid my nonna’s blind dates, try not to blackmail my brothers into giving me confidential police files, and absolutely do not point my gun at Drake Nash. Or kiss him. Or jump his bones.

All while I hunt down the killer.

Sounds totally simple—until a second body proves that sometimes things that start as coincidences don’t always end up that way…

(Twisted Bond is book one of the Holly Woods Files series and while it does not end in a cliffhanger, it is not a standalone.)

“Why are you here?”
He pulls his ear defenders down. “Out here?”
“Here.” I yank off my ear defenders. “At my parents’ for family dinner. Out here, bugging me. Take your pick. I’ll take a reason for either.”
“Your nonna appears to have taken a real good likin’ to me. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she’s tryna set us up.”
“Clearly, she’s losin’ her mind,” I snap, reloading my gun again before tucking it back into my boot. I fold my arms and meet his eyes. “And out here? Why are you here?”
Nothing. Just silence. Just those goddamned beautiful eyes boring into mine.
“No? Okay.” I walk past him, pushing hair from my face.
“Don’t go out with him again.” His arm shoots out to stop me, and his words hit me hard. “Gio.”
“Since when has it been any of your business what I do?” I face him, narrowing my eyes as our gazes collide. “Last I checked, I’m a single, grown woman, and if I want to go out with someone, I will.”
“He’s not the kind of guy you need.”
“Neither are you,” I reply, running my eyes down his white shirt, which is untucked over his dark-blue jeans. The bottom of his shirt is gaping, allowing me a view of a triangle of tan skin with a smattering of dark hair. I linger there for a moment before pulling my gaze back up. “Yet here we are, having this conversation, you thinkin’ you know what’s best for me.”

Dax Davies has one job to fulfill in the Davies household. Earn money at the family business. The problem is that the family business was illegal underground fighting.

From a young age, Dax and his brothers are groomed to become money earners in their father’s club. Broken bones and bruises are commonplace. Their father pits the brothers against each other to ‘toughen them up’ for the ring, using his rules to bend his sons to his will. His future is in the cage, not on stage where he dreams of making music.

Kate Campbell loves one thing in life. Well, two. Soccer and Dax Davies. Growing up in the poorest part of London, soccer is her personal escape from reality and from the fact that Dax doesn’t seem to know she exists. She figures if she can be good enough at soccer, maybe she can get away from Hackney, and leave the poverty behind.

Kate doesn’t plan on ever getting to know Dax as more than a passing acquaintance. In fact, she isn’t meant to go with her friend to Dax’s father’s business, but that one night changes everything.

***This is book 2 in the Sphere of Irony Series. It can be read as a standalone. This is a spin-off of the Famous Series***

h

Excerpt. Dax and Kate’s 1st kiss. Kate’s POV.

Before I can blink, Dax’s huge, calloused hands are framing my face and his mouth brushes across mine. At first it’s just a whisper, a tease, the contact barely there. Then, I hear him inhale sharply and his lips press down forcefully, melding with mine, urging me to open up with quick flicks of his tongue. I melt against his solid body as he dominates the kiss, completely under his spell to do with as he wishes. It seems to go on and on—a small slice of paradise in this blighted spot of East London.

When he finally pulls back, greedily stealing a few more nips at my mouth, he closes his eyes and moans. “I knew you’d taste like heaven. You’re an angel, I just knew it.” His voice is so quiet I wonder if he meant to say it out loud.

Naturally, I stand there like an idiot, saying nothing… doing nothing. I’ve been kissed into complete stupidity.

Dax swipes the pad of his thumb over my damp lips. “See you at school tomorrow.” Without giving me a single hint of what he’s thinking, he turns and leaves. I touch my mouth, running a finger over the same spot Dax touched. My heart leaps into my throat, fluttering so fast I fear it may explode.

Great. I’m ruined. My first kiss and it was nothing less than brilliant. Dax Davies just ruined me for every other man from now until the day I die.

Excerpt. Dax notices Kate Dax’s POV

I follow Adam’s gaze to see Ellie hurrying towards us, towing a friend by the hand. Ellie immediately latches on to Adam, prattling on about something or other. Tuning out the happy couple, I take a moment to check out Ellie’s friend, Kate. I’ve seen her around, mostly with Ellie, but she’s in my maths class as well. In fact, now that I think about it, we’ve been in school together a long time.

The fact that I didn’t remember her until now makes me frown, which in turn, makes Kate’s eyes go wide with fear. The girl is fiddling with her hair, pulling it up into a ponytail. She’s clearly uncomfortable around me, so, being the heartless prick that I am, I decide to make it worse.

“You’re Kate.”

When impossibly green eyes shoot up to meet mine, big and innocent looking, all of the smartass comments I have at the ready fall away. Smooth, lightly freckled skin flushes pink and full lips part, making my cock sit up and take notice. It’s then I realize I’ve never really looked at Kate before.

How did I not see how gorgeous this girl is? She’s not obvious or flashy—no, she’s very… girl next door. Sporty and fit with tawny brown hair always pulled up on her head, showing off two very high cheekbones. I’m surprised how affected I am by her. My heart has begun thumping hard and my palms are sweaty. How angry would Adam be if I shagged Ellie’s best friend?

Probably very. Not that I care much what he thinks.

While I’m thinking of how she looks naked, she gathers herself together and answers my question. “Yes. I’m Kate.” Shit, even her voice affects me—soft and slightly scratchy in a sexy kind of way. Now my dick is throbbing, pressing uncomfortably against my zipper. I need to hear that voice again.

“I’m Dax. You’re in my maths class.”

Those emerald eyes get even wider and her jaw hangs open. “How do you know who I am?”

Huh?

“Why wouldn’t I know who you are? Haven’t we been in the same year for ages?” I furrow my brow, trying to decide if I’m thinking of a different girl. But no, it’s her, I’m sure of it.

“Y-y-yes. Since third year.”

I hold back a smile, keeping my cool exterior. At least I got that right. “Well then, apparently I’m not as stupid as some might say.”

Kate’s fingers untwist from her hair, settling on her hips. Lush, ruby lips turn down in the corners and her eyes narrow. She looks downright offended. “Who says you’re stupid? You’re in my advanced maths class, so I know that can’t be true.”

For once in my life I’m speechless. No one ever gives me the benefit of the doubt or defends my intelligence. Do I bother explaining to her that most people associate a big, muscled guy with an empty skull? Add in the underground fighting and they assume I’ve taken enough hits to the head to be rendered daft and dumb.

No one talks about it, but the teachers here know what I do—what my dad’s business is. I am the fourth Davies son at this school after all and they treat me accordingly. They don’t even bat an eye at the bruises anymore.

I tilt my chin to look down at her. Kate’s not at my eye level, but for a girl, she’s fairly tall—maybe five foot seven or eight? In those eyes, eyes as green as the stripes on the Davies family tartan, I see something I haven’t seen on a girl’s face in… well, ever. Admiration? Respect, maybe? Is it possible Kate respects me? That she sees past my intimidating exterior to the man beneath the brawn? That she sees more than just a conquest to brag to her friends about?

One of dad’s rules pops into my head.

Rule 2—Never let your emotions show.

I lock down the surprise on my face, keeping it to its usual icy façade.

What if she doesn’t like what she finds? I don’t know why I care, but suddenly, I don’t want Kate to know about the fighting, the girls, my family… those goddamn rules. For the first time in my life I’m not proud of my wins, of all the girls I’ve shagged or had suck me off at the club or behind the school. For once, I’m truly ashamed of what I am.

“And . . .” She held up her hand like she was doing a damn countdown! “You’re kind of, like . . .” She leaned forward and whispered, “A bit . . .” Her eyes teased. “Metro.”

“As in . . . ,” I baited her.

“Feminine,” she snapped. “Yup, that’s the word. And Max, I mean that in the nicest way possible.”

“You mean . . .” I licked my lips, then slapped the water. “In the kindest way you can possibly say it, ‘Oh, look, Max has boobs’? Or you mean it in the way that says I lack the proper sexual magnetism to get your engine going?”

Becca rolled her eyes. “Hey, I didn’t come here to fight. I was just going to go over our date for tomorrow without the watchful eyes of Big Brother.”

“Hmm.” She was looking down at her feet. So I did what any desperate man who’d just been insulted in the worst way possible would do. I grabbed her feet, dragged her into the water, creating a huge splash, and then, when her head popped up for air, I gave her something else.

My tongue.

Kissing Becca could become a very nice, very addicting . . . pastime. Her lips were soft, pliant, but her hands were beating against my chest. Ah, classic move. Listen up, men: women fight us because they’re expected to. They have to put up the fight so they don’t come off as easy. So the next time a girl hits you in the chest, go with it, kiss her harder. It just means she wants more, especially when her chest is heaving and her tongue is doing . . . that. Yeah, exactly. Oh. Hell. Damn. Kill me now. When her tongue is doing that? Becca’s tongue pushed against mine and then she sucked.

I felt said sucking all the way through my body.

When she stopped fighting me, I wrapped my arms around her neck, pulling her as close against me as I could, and then pulled away.

Her eyes furrowed with confusion as she tried to lean forward.

I pulled back again, and swam her over to the ladder.

“Thanks, Becca,” I whispered. “I needed a little motivation.”

“M-motivation?”

“Game on.” I helped her up and followed. “And by the way . . .” I grabbed her hands and moved her flat palms from my chest all the way down to my waist. “I’m anything but feminine. Have a good night.” As I walked away, I did what any sane man would do. I paused so she could get her fill and realize that yes, I was, in fact, still naked. And when I heard her gasp, I turned around and saluted her in more ways than one.

Point. Max.

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief ever since the car accident that left him a single dad and put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury and still crippled by emotional baggage, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

Review

“My insides feel dead, my capacity to care for much of anything seems lost, but there are two things that still keep me functioning. It;s the prospect of playing hockey again, and, more important, my son, Ben.”

Zack is book three in Sawyer Bennett’s Cold Fury series and is told in first person with dual point of view. This book could be read as a standalone but to get the full experience I recommend reading the other two books, especially Garrett. Zack is a story of loss, resilience and learning that there are many different ways to grieve and many ways to love. Zack does not always make loving him easy but he does deserve sympathy and patience. Having just gone through a loss that would make the strongest person crumble he is determined to move forward and make a good life for his son, Ben.

“There’s something about you that doesn’t sit right with me, and I personally don’t want you here.”

Kate is hiding in plain sight. After learning at an early age that her beauty and curvy body get her the wrong kind of attention, she wears her hair in a bun and clothes that are several sizes too big. Kate is silly and quirky and fun and always says what is on her mind. She kind heroine that everyone can love. Even when Zack is rude and mean to her she is patient and understanding. Always open and honest with what she can handle from him I loved her the whole way through.

“Are we done talking now? Because I’d really like to put my mouth to other uses.”

To a small extent I was bothered that this story perpetuated the idea that if boys act out when a girl dresses provocatively than it is the girl who should change and not the boys. Kate lives 10 years of life hiding herself because it keeps her safe. While I hate this idea it is something that happens in real life so it’s hard to say that it should not be written that way. Books should not just portray the best possible outcomes because then they wouldn’t feel real. Still though reading that and the fact that the hero had little interest in Kate until he sees her hair down and in revealing pajamas was very slightly frustrating to this girl. That being said I really enjoyed the book overall and liked watching Zack develop from cold closed off single dad to a sweet loving man capable of moving forward.

“Zack Grantham was cuddling with me. Best. Birthday. Present. Ever.”

For me personally, one of the best parts of this book is that is takes place in my city. Having lives in Raleigh, NC my whole life I get giddy every time a local street or place is mentioned. I love how close the Cold Fury team is to our own Hurricanes, a team whose stadium is just miles from my house. Sawyer Bennett mixes the depth needed for a grieving man to give love a shot with a heat level that makes you melt. Zack is a wonderful addition to the Cold Fury family and I look forward to getting to read more of these men in the future!

EXCERPT

“Have you been sexually active in the past six months?” The doctor sniffed and started pulling out supplies, laying them across the table. I watched in horror as visions of getting abducted by aliens danced like sugarplums in my head.

People die from fear.

It could happen.

I read stories where people would just spontaneously combust.

And it was about to happen if the heat in my body and all-around shaking were any indicator.

“I have to—” Jason ran toward the door and slammed it behind him.

“Weak stomach?” The doctor chuckled.

“He’s afraid of my nakedness—makes him feel like less of a man.”

“O-okay.” The doctor laughed again and motioned for me to turn around. “Now, drop your pants to your knees.”

Let it be known that no man. NO MAN should ever hear those words from someone who could pass as his great-grandfather.

The cold air bit my ass as I turned and waited.

“Now, bend over.”

I did as he said, cursing Jason and all his future children.

“Now, this may be cold.”

Just let it be small.

“And a bit painful, it’s totally normal to experience some discomfort.”

“Ha-ha.” I laughed dryly. “Guess we know what it means if it’s comfortable, am I right, Doc?”

And silence.

Worst thing to say when you have your pants at your ankles and the doctor’s about two seconds away from making you see stars. Where were the drugs?

“Now try not to tense up.”

Ha, seriously?

“Here we go.”

Oh. God. Did he need to count down?

“Turn your head and—cough.”

“Mother of God!” I shouted, hitting my hands against the metal table as the doctor made his intentions perfectly clear.

“Cough!” he shouted.

“Stop yelling at me!”

“I’m not yelling!”

“I want to go home now.”

“Almost done!” The doctor laughed uncomfortably.

I choked when he removed his digits from my special place. I had one of those moments, the kind where you feel so used you’re not sure whether you should cry or laugh.

“All right! You can put your pants back on.”

I felt ashamed. Like I’d just been screwed and not even offered dinner for my gallant efforts in the bedroom. Holy shit, was this what girls felt like after one-night stands?

Where the hell were my flowers?

At least give me a sucker or something . . . maybe a sticker? Saying I got . . . never mind. Those types of stickers were probably illegal.

“Now.” The doc took off his gloves and washed his hands.

Right. LIKE I WAS UNCLEAN!

He put on a new pair.

And the torture train just kept tooting.

Ha, tooting, see, it’s funny because . . . never mind.

“I’ll just need to draw some blood.” He pulled out a giant-ass needle and I had one of those moments that I’m sure every five-year-old experiences right before his mom holds him down while he gets a needle in the ass.

“This won’t hurt a bit.” He laughed nervously.

HOLY SHIT, STOP LAUGHING!

I winced as he pricked my arm and started drawing blood. His lips were moving but I wasn’t really catching anything.

“All donnne.” His voice was low. Why was he talking so slow?

“Youuu cannn gooo noowww.”

I shook my head and tried to go to the door but was met with total blackness before I took two steps.

The last thought in my head?

I was trapped in a room with a man who’d just seen my Mighty Max. I hoped to God he hadn’t liked it.

Synopsis

After losing his best friend to another guy, the notoriously too-confident Max Emory suddenly feels lost. He may have devastatingly good looks, an abundance of charm, and a claim to one of the biggest hotel empires around, but he has no ambition anymore. So when his fed-up friends decide they’ve had enough of his moping, they sign him up to be the next bachelor on the reality series Love Island. And between his pride and his forged signature on an ironclad contract, Max just can’t say no.

Now he’s stranded in paradise with twenty-four women, one terrifying goat, and Becca, the breathtaking barista who already turned him down back home. The closer Max gets to Becca, the more determined he becomes to win her over. As she gets to know him better, things start heating up. But is Becca really after Max’s heart—or is she after the cash prize she could claim once the cameras stop rolling?

Review

“Well, well, well. New barista. Have I mentioned I have a weakness for a girl in an apron? No? Well/ Now you know. Smiling, I placed my hands onto the cool countertop and leaned forward, ‘Hey, girl.’ The barista’s eyebrows shot up and then a scowl I assume she reserved for rapists, terrorists, and people named Max appeared, rendering my balls a little shaky and my confidence a bit stunned.”

Of course Rachel Van Dyken has done it again (not that we ever doubted her. I don’t think she could write something that wasn’t near flawless if she tried.) The Consequence of Revenge is book two in the series but it could very easily be read as a stand alone. Told in first person with dual point of views this was a fun and silly romantic read that hit all my happy spots inside. Having had read the first book in this series, The Consequence Of Loving Colton, I enjoyed the chance to catch up with all the characters I had grown to love and also to fall in love with a few new ones as well.

“I like you, You fight fire with fire. I think if we ever got off this island and the world gets taken over by zombies, I want you as my second in-command.”  “Aw. Sweetest thing a guy’s ever said to me.”

Max is floating through life aimlessly, unsure of where to go now that he is done with school he is trapped in a cycle of living off his daddy’s money and being the fun loving playboy we all know. What his life is lacking is some sort of purpose, drive and maybe a touch of love. On a joke (and maybe with a bit of intention of kick starting Max into figuring out what to do with his life now) the team enlist Max to star in a reality show that is a bit of a cross  between The Bachelor and Survivor. Reluctantly (and after a VERY awkward physical) Max agrees and soon he is off to the island to meet the lovely ladies that will be his contestants.

“Three days and he was already making me second-guess all my preconceived notions about the type of guy he was. I’d though that because he was funny he was harmless, but I’d had no idea funny could be dangerous because it was too easy to let him in and once he was in he stayed there – refusing to budge. He wasn’t just funny; he was sexy and had a personality that was electric. Besides, he kissed like a dream. An actual dream.”

Becca is a local barista and student struggling to make ends meet and sees the show as a way to make money so that she can continue her education and not have to count every penny she earned. Having already shot Max down in real life she sees no problem making it through the taping of this show with her heart and emotions in check. That is until she actually gets to know Max and quickly figures out that not only are both of them very attracted to each other but that share a wacky sense of humor. Staying detached is becoming harder and harder as the taping continues not to mention watching countless girls also vie for his attention brings out a new side to her as well.

“Sorry, can you repeat the questions? Your boobs were talking to me.”  “They were not.”  “Um, they moved, and I’m pretty sure the right one said hi. Swear it was even ready to pop out and say hi.”  “Max! Stop being . . .you!”

Funny, smart and sexy too. Rachel writes witty banter and report like no one else. While a relationship between these two happens quickly it is definitely not a case of insta-love. Max and Becca develop a camaraderie and friendship first by helping to look out for each other on the island. Before Max is even capable of love he has to grow a bit as a person and man. Hiding behind humor and sex it is easy to be the fun one but as he gets older the future is scaring him. His friendship with Becca teaches him that he can be both fun and responsible.

“Missing those fingertips would have been such a crime. Missing those lips? I shuddered at the thought. I would never. Ever. Miss her, because she would be by my side together.”

With an insane cast of characters, dialogue that leaves your sides hurting and a steam level that makes you pant, The Consequence of Revenge has something everybody will enjoy. Rachel is a talented writer who can switch from angst, to action to humor without batting an eye and I will happily read anything she puts out.

Brooklyn
I thought that he was a part of a distant past. I thought I didn’t feel anything for him now, but I was not so sure anymore. Having him back in my life, for however long it was, was making me see things differently. So many things had changed in the last six years and somehow I’d lost myself and forgotten all about my dreams.
My home life was still a mess, my personal life was nothing to boast about and when I see how successful he is, how everything he’d always wanted came true, I couldn’t help but feel lacking in a lot of ways. But he’s back and he needed me. I knew I was the only one who understood that part of his life, the only one he’s willing to share it with. My heart is still beating too hard and too fast for him and this time around, I was as much an adult as he was.
Having a six year age gap didn’t mean shit.
Nolan
Being back in Riverdale was harder than I thought. I’d turned my back on that life, but there had always been that one girl in my head. Little B. Now she’s nothing like the twelve year old girl I’d last seen. She’s a young woman, gorgeous and sexy. I couldn’t stay away. There’s something drawing me to her and it goes beyond my need to reconnect with her, to have her back in my life and fill the hollow part of my chest. But I couldn’t forget the little girl she had been; I shouldn’t forget the little girl she used to be.
Growing up with a junkie mother and nobody else, my neighbor, Brooklyn, had been my only happy place. I had taken care of her, and when I had left, I had to leave behind a huge part of me. I couldn’t do it again. I needed her. Once again, she’s the only person I want in my life, but I wasn’t sure if it was for all the right reasons.

Short Excerpt:
“I won’t push you away.”
His Adam’s apple jumped once and a smile brightened his face. My eyes landed on his pierced lower lip and a wave of lust punched me low in my belly. I cleared my throat, feeling uncomfortable with the pictures my brain conjured.
He came closer, erasing the little space separating us. I could feel the washed away denim of his blue jeans and his firm thigh underneath against my bare leg. I wanted to close my eyes and revel in his presence, in the feel of his body against me, but I didn’t. I kept my eyes open as he leaned into me and wrapped his arms around me. The lean muscles in his arms flexed, his bare and hot skin brushing mine. I felt naked in my tank top as his bare arms were doing things to me I never thought possible.
“Relax, Brooklyn. It’s just me,” he said in my ear, his thin lips and loop tracing the words against the sensitive skin of my ear. I never realized before how an ear could be so erogenous. I couldn’t believe it. I was in Nolan’s arms six years after he left. He was here, in my bedroom.
I took a deep breath and the smell of his clean clothes and the scent that was only him, assaulted me. I was taken back to six years ago, before I had to face the loneliness that was my life. Before I lost my best friend. But right now, I wanted to stay in his arms without thinking about his departure or the future. I wrapped my arms around his narrow waist and balled his t-shirt in my fists.
He relaxed against me and ran a hand up and down my back, avoiding the small of my back that was bared by my tank top which had ridden up. “It feels different,” he said, pulling away. He nibbled on the loop in his lower lip.
I nodded and smiled weakly. Losing the heat and weight of his arms around me made me feel depressed. I missed that kind of attention, of touch. Mike and all the guys before him never hugged me just because they cared about me. If they hugged me it was with the purpose to have me naked minutes later and while I was all for it, it was also difficult when you had nobody to give you a real, warm hug. I’d forgotten what comfort felt like.
“It’s different. We’re both adults now.”

Review

Nine-year-old Brooklyn was a lonely young child. The only child to born to emotionally absent parents still grieving over the loss of their first child, she didn’t have much of a home life or a parental support system. While her parents were physically present and did not abuse her, they ignored her and went on about their lives as if she didn’t exist.

Nolan Bell was an angry 15-year-old boy. His father wasn’t in the picture and his mother was a junkie. He was left to his own devices, and he often had to take care of his mother. He filled his time with girls and his dreams of leaving this life behind for college.

One night, nine year old Brooklyn meets her next-door neighbor, 15-year-old Nolan, and a friendship is started. For Brooklyn, Big No was the one solid force in her young life. She loved him, and as she grew older, that adoration grew into a young girl’s crush and then finally into love. For Nolan, Little B was the bright spot in his otherwise dark world. She was the only person who believed whole-heartedly in him and she pushed him to do better. Over the years, their friendship grew and they both relied upon each other and became the most important person in the other’s life. Until Nolan left for college without saying goodbye and without a backwards glance, leaving a brokenhearted and shattered Brooklyn behind.

He was tattooed on my heart, in my bones, through my soul.”

Six years have passed and Nolan has become a successful, best selling author. He lives in New York, he’s wealthy and he’s in a relationship with the “right” kind of girl. He has not kept in contact with anyone from home. But his mother is now dying and she reaches out to him, and he returns home to deal with those demons.

She’s my past and should be my present and future.”

He is shocked when he sees Brooklyn again. She is not the 12 year old girl he left behind. He soothed himself by thinking that he left her to pursue his dreams and she’d be doing well, she’d be dating a nice boy and she’d welcome him home with open arms. Brooklyn, however, has grown up. She’s a little harder now, life hasn’t been easy for her and her dreams were destroyed long ago.

I was brokenhearted.”

Between the chilly reception he receives from her to the fact that she has blossomed in to a beautiful and sexy young woman, Nolan is nearly obsessed with reconnecting with Brooklyn. She is less enthusiastic. He attempts to rekindle the big brother role in her life, and she is not having it. Brooklyn slowly warms to Nolan’s persistent attempts to spend time with her. But the more time he spends with her, the more feelings he develops. He’s very confused by these feelings because this is his Little B and he’s six years older than her. But Brooklyn is the calm voice of reason for Nolan, and she consistently shows an incredible amount of maturity and patience during this time. He is enthralled with this Brooklyn, but he’s struggling with his feelings for her. Can Nolan reconcile and embrace his feelings for Brooklyn and overcome his hang-ups about their age difference?

There’s something about her that made it impossible for me to let go. No matter what, she truly was a piece of me, the best one.”

This beautiful story is one about love in all its forms and transformative powers of it. It’s about two people purging the pain of their pasts to forge their future together built upon a solid foundation of their history together and their deep love for each other. I loved it, and it gets 4 smooches from me!
