About Penny Reid

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

I’ve never been your typical girl. I didn’t grow up in a warm fuzzy family, and emotions weren’t something I needed now. Love has never been something I could wrap my mind around, so why bother? Ten minutes later, I had to walk back through the kitchen to get some laundry from the dryer in the mudroom. I had a towel wrapped around my waist and that was it. Steph’s eyes followed me, her eyebrows raised as she sipped on a glass of wine and lazily stirred whatever was in the pan. I winked as I passed by.
I returned a minute later dressed in sweatpants and a T-shirt.
She was still in the same position. “That was indecent.”
“What? The towel?”
She pursed her lips and nodded.
“Sweetheart, you’ve seen me in less. And what we’ve done together could never be considered decent. You’re lucky I was covered at all.”
She laughed loudly, taking another long sip from her glass and turning back to the stove.
I reached into the fridge for a beer and popped it open. “Sure you don’t need me to help?”
She responded without turning around. “Nope. Why don’t you find something on TV to watch and I’ll bring dinner in just a sec.”
I nodded as I walked to the living room, really just to myself since she wouldn’t look at me. Sighing heavily, I sank down on the couch and closed my eyes for a moment. I’d lied earlier. I was tired. Not only was I pulling long hours in the saddle, but I’d been spending most of my free time on the phone with clients from home. A couple of them were causing problems, and my dad needed me to talk them off the ledge. It’s what I excelled at.
I was startled awake by the sound of a plate being set on the table in front of me and the feel of the couch dipping as Steph sat down, smirking.
“Gosh, you need to get in better shape.”
“Shut up,” I muttered as I sat up, rubbing my hands over my face. At least now she seemed infinitely more comfortable in her own skin since she had something to tease me about. “I was just resting my eyes.”
“You were snoring.”
“I was not.” I started to laugh.
“Totally snoring.”
“I don’t snore,” I insisted.
“How would you know? You’re sleeping.”
“Someone would have told me.”
“No girlfriend would ever mention it,” she pointed out.
I shook my head. “I wasn’t talking about a girlfriend.”
“No one-night stand would ever mention it.”
“You just did!”
There was a moment of silence after I blurted that out. Steph’s eyes were wide, but when they met mine, we both erupted into laughter, doubling over, shoulders shaking. My stomach actually hurt by the time we were finished. Steph wiped under her eyes and I took a deep breath, relaxing back into the couch with a sigh.
“Let’s face it,” she said. “I’m more than just a one-night stand.”

I live in beautiful Northern Virginia with my incredible husband, two awesome kids, three dogs, and two budgies. My husband and I both grew up riding and competing horses and have our own equestrian operation that we run together. In my spare time, I read through the hundreds of stories awaiting me on my e-reader.
My love of books started early, and my mom used to ration my reading time so I didn’t go through them too quickly. I love all things romantic, whether it’s dark or light or silly or dirty, but I really love a happy ending!
In my small moments of quiet time, you’ll find me sipping on wine and reading while any movie where people randomly burst into song or dance plays in the background.

Review

Lawrence and Steph have a one night stand. Both feel the connection. However, Steph makes it clear. It is NEVER happening again. They remain friends and have a budding platonic friendship.
Until feelings start to re-surface.
Steph is afraid of taking chances on life, on love.
Lawrence believes in embracing it, not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
She refuses to accept love.
He willingly gives it.
will they take a chance on love?
Steph is a selfless, witty, funny character who you can’t help but connect with straight away. She is beautiful inside and out. Anything she does, always benefits others. She looks after everyone but herself.  She comes across as quite confident and she is, However, certain circumstances and parents who have never provided her with the love she deserves, causes insecurities to rear it’s ugly head at times. Building walls up, especially when it comes one thing.
A relationship.
Love.
Lawrence is a simple man. He knows what he wants and he’s not afraid to let it be known. He’s a family man, he’s funny, sexy and even a little cocky. When it comes to a relationship with Steph, he wants all in or nothing and he leaves that decision with her, he wants her to be all in too. He leaves it in her corner to decide if they’re going to have a relationship and start their journey together.
“So,” he continued. “That’s how I feel. That’s what I’ve figured out.  I want you, specifically, because you’ve infiltrated my mind, my body, my fucking soul.  You’re smart, and you’re strong, compassionate, driven, and hot as fuck.  The question I need to ask is… why are you here? why are you here right now?”
Everything is heightened between these two when they’re together, you can feel the sexual sizzle between them! The banter between them is flirty, easy and fun. They have that kind of chemistry that you would assume they are actually together and so in love. Their chemistry and that spark between them is palpable from the beginning and you can’t help but root for these characters.
It’s really a story from friends to lovers – C.M. Foss’ writing is perfect at pulling the reader right in, from the very start. This was one of the few books that I have read without checking where I am in the book, what chapter I’m on, I really got lost in Steph’s and Lawrence’s story, It had me laughing, smiling and definitely swooning.
‘As I flipped on the television, my phone pinged again. This time it was Lawrence checking on me.  I took a picture of my wine and sent it on.  Thus began an hour-long text war that had me laughing, my eyes glued to my phone and with no idea what was playing on the TV’
I felt like this was a mature story- I felt it hadn’t got that over-done drama and angst (don’t get me wrong I love those kind of books, they are usually the ones I read), and it really didn’t need it. Yes it was mature but make no mistake this book was the perfect combination of fun, sexy, heart warming, hot and even emotional at times. Because it hadn’t got all the heightened drama, angst and grit it felt mature for me, but C.M. Foss knows how to create fascinating characters that grabs and holds your attention until that very last word. It was the perfect mix between sweet and sexy! Those sweet moments that would make your heart melt and hot sizzling moments that will make you blush!
I really didn’t want it to end, although it did end perfectly, for me. This was my first book of C.M. Foss and I cannot wait to see what’s next! 🙂

Review

“Jack had left a month ago. Actually, it was four weeks and three endless days ago, and no matter how many times I was told it would get easier, it still hurt to breathe past the pain.”

Anxiety . . . Love triangles give me so much anxiety! I was so nervous the whole time reading it! But I have to say it was fabulous! As much as I loved Jack in Yours Tonight he broke my heart, and much like Lana Cal helped put it back together.

“Cal was the epitome of fun, but he was also hard to be around. Because every time I looked at him, my mind wondered about things it shouldn’t.”

Lena’s world is crashing around her. The man she was in love didn’t fight for her and left and the step-brother who has made her life hell is tormenting her. Only one man can make her forget her problems and get lost in the moment. But while Cal makes everything better he also makes it so much more complicated too! When you fall in love with the best friend of the man you thought you could love forever life will never be simple or easy.

“What do you see when you look at me?”  “I see my next mistake.”

As I stated in the beginning of this review I have a hard time with love triangles and while this series is one it also isn’t. There is no cheating and no crossover in the stories really. Each man has their own book and their own time to prove their worth but that being said until I finish the series and know how it all ends my nerves for these fictional characters will be out of control. I love them and this explosive situation they have found themselves in.

“Kitten,”

Kitten. That word alone would make any woman’s panties drop. Cal was all man and oozed sex. He got me excited and all kinds of hot and bothered. The sex scenes were both intense and at times fun. Cal for all his jovial tendencies really turns into a lust inducing alpha in the bedroom and I for one am all for it!

“I want to not want you the way I do.”

Joya Ryan has writing a captivating and dynamic story that leaves you wanting more and desperate to the end. While this has been my first series from this author I can guarantee it will not be my last!

Teaser

“Why don’t we go downstairs, get our wine, and I’ll make a fire. Did you bring the journal?”

I followed Gael out of the room as he grabbed my hand. “Yes, but there’s still no way I’m reading to you.”

My face would be ten shades of red if I were to speak the thoughts Sophia had as Daniel made love to her.

Gael’s deep voice resonated deep within me as he spoke. “Grab the journal. I’ll get the wine and food. I’ll meet you in the living room and build a fire.”

“I’m not reading it. There’s no amount of wine, delicious food or tempting kisses that will change my mind.”

He gave me a quick kiss on the lips. “I like that you think my kisses are tempting. I want to read it to you.”

“Really?” Imagining Gael’s deep voice reading to me had the feelings from earlier in his office returning. The attraction was undeniable.

“Yes.”

That one word spoken had my heart racing with excitement. I grabbed the journal from my purse on  the chair and made my way to the couch in the living room. My thoughts returned to what had happened with Gael upstairs. The fact that he hadn’t slept with me made Gael more endearing. It wasn’t lost on me that Gael had said when we make love to each other. I bit my lip and gave a little giggle.

Within me, happiness bubbled to the surface. We hadn’t defined what we were doing and I was okay with that. I liked that I wasn’t being confined to a box and left to be free while I became my own person again.

After a few minutes, Gael came in with the wine and food on a tray. He handed me my glass.

“Thank you. A girl could get used to this type of treatment.”

He gave me a wink. “Good, it’s only the beginning. Let me start the fire.”

The open-ended innuendos were sexy and left me wanting Gael more. I watched him move with ease as he put the logs in and used newspaper as a starter. Striking a match, he lit the paper before placing it strategically between the logs. There was something about a man who could start a fire versus hitting a button and having instant flames that had me wanting to tackle him on the floor. Down girl. Down.

He looked at me over his shoulder. “You like what you see?”

“I do. The logs are amazing looking. It looks like they were cut at just the right angle.”

His mouth dropped in shock. I had to set my wineglass down as I became tickled at his lost, self-assured expression. The fire caught as he made his way back to me with a predatory gate. “I hoped maybe there was something you liked in the man who was building the fire.”

I shrugged. “He’s all right.”

He sat beside me and drew his finger across my lips, leaving a wake of fire in its path. “He better be more than all right to you.”

“He is.” My voice was barely above a whisper.

Gael kissed me, but kept it sweet. “Good. That’s what I like to hear.” I could feel his breath on my lips.

“I’m ready for my story.”

Gael’s answering grin made my heart skip a beat as he settled in to the couch. He took the journal off my lap.

Grabbing my wineglass, I snuggled into him. My body fit perfectly against his. Peace and contentment settled over me. I glanced into my wineglass and remembered looking into one at Amelia’s wedding. My feelings were the opposite now. There was hope.

“Let’s see if Sophia and Daniel desecrated my upstairs office.”

I shook my head. “Oh geez, I hope she quickly summarizes the deed. I wonder if Sophia ever considered who would read her personal thoughts one day. I’d be mortified.”

Gael laughed as he opened to the journal and removed my metal bookmark. His deep, soothing voice filled the space as he read the thoughts of Sophia.

Review

This is a story about two different times, two different women and two different love stories but they are also intertwined in more ways than just through a journal.

“Why wasn’t I able to find the love we saw in fairy tales? Everyone I loved eventually left me.”

I had a huge love/hate relationship with this book. What I loved was the plot and story line; so beautiful, sad, heart-warming and heart-breaking but what I didn’t like was the fact that sometimes the writing seemed a bit young considering the tone of the book and there were too many occasions or insta-love/lust.

“I can’t let you go and I won’t. I want it all. Don’t ask me to give up anything. I’m keeping you, Ashlin. I won’t let anyone else have you. This isn’t a battle you’re going to win. We were meant to be together.”

Firstly the plot; like I said I loved the plot. It was so beautiful, I cried many times but I also felt uplifted and happy during many parts of the story. It’s such an interesting concept; Ashlin finding the journal and reading her great great great relatives love story but at the same time she herself is going through a passionate but not easy love story. I have to say I think Sophia and Daniel’s story was my favourite by quite a bit but I did love Ashlin and Gael’s as well. We had drama, passion, romance, heart ache; so much to keep you entertained. Neither story was a simple, straight forward love story; there were ex-boyfriend, bitter and mean mothers….but it is all worth it in the end because you truly feel both couple’s love for each other. However I did have a problem with the writing, sometimes it just didn’t seem mature enough considering the topics and I also hated the really really sudden insta-love; it took away the believability of each romance.

“My world had changed so much over the last few days. Now, I was completely alone. Part of me was devastated. Part of me was terrified. Part of me was liberated.”

I loved the main characters, both Sophia and Ashlin were strong, beautiful women who knew what they wanted and were not afraid of the consequences. They were honest and kind and women you could look up to. Daniel and Gael were both knight in shining armour boyfriends. They were passionate, caring, weren’t afraid to show how much they loved their partners and were both so strong when things started to go horribly wrong. They never gave up hope in either of their partners and believe their love would conquer all.

“Sophia Marie Stowe. You shall always remain the keeper of my heart and soul. Each night I close my eyes, I shall see your eyes. Each morning I wake, I will dream of your smile. You will forever be the love of my life.”

I found it really hard to rate this story, if it was purely on the plot I would give it 4.5 stars but due to the writing and minor plot elements that irritated me I’ve had to give this story a 3.5 but I would encourage all romance readers to give this a go because it really will have you weeping but also smiling over two beautiful love stories.

Excerpt:

I held her wrists above her head and leaned down so she could feel my words, not just hear them. “I give you what I want, when I want – my fingers, my mouth, my tongue…” My hand dropped to my zipper. I fisted the crotch of my jeans. “Even my fucking cock. Understood?”

I expected her to pull back, but her focus seemed to soften as her eyes traveled down my stomach and settled on my hand. I released the bulge so she could get a better look at my dick.

She licked her lips. “Got it.”

I knelt on the bed and straddled her body, holding her hands against the headboard. I had made a special request for this bed, I wanted something wooden, with slats on the headboard, carved and sanded, so the finish was smooth on all four sides. I knew she could handle the rubbing, but I didn’t want her skin cut or splintered.

“You’re not going to tie me up…”

I weaved the flannel around her wrists and secured the knots to the headboard. “I’m not?” The shirt was tight enough to prevent her from moving, but loose enough to allow circulation.

She glanced at my handiwork. “You warned me that you would do this…I never thought you really would.”

“Don’t ever doubt me, Frankie. I always keep my promises.”

Review

The first installment of Unblocked had me salivating and desperate for more which is sometimes the upside and downside to a serialised novel- the anticipation in between episodes. Episode Two picks up where the first left off with Frankie trying her damndest to resist the charismatic allure of her soon-to-be boss Derek and have their friendship remain strictly platonic if not professional.

‘“Because when I tie you up and lick every inch of your body, things like whether I’m wearing flannel or a ten thousand dollar suit aren’t going to matter. You won’t be aware of anything other than my tongue. I promise.” She leaned her head into the back cushion of the booth and closed her eyes. I felt the deep breath as she inhaled. “I need to be your realtor, and nothing, and nothing more. That’s the only way this is going to work.”

It’s so hard to keep serials interesting enough so that the reader is willing to pay for each one thereafter but Marni Mann has managed that feat with tremendous ease. Unblocked part two is sensual and fun with a gritty slightly sinister and mysterious edge. With Derek’s myriad of secrets and revenge plots in play on the peripheral of the story, as well as trying to tempt the intelligent and brilliant Frankie into his bed Unblocked has enough steam and drama and intrigue to put most full length novels to shame. The writing is flawless and the characters diverse and often quite funny even when battling sexual tension or catty colleagues. Be forewarned though, this episode ends on another semi cliffhanger but rather than irritate you it just leaves you needing the next part of the story
