Blurb

From the New York Times bestselling author of Jake Undone, comes a full-length standalone companion novel and sequel.

A different side to the story: Jake’s side.

“We’re getting a new roommate,” they said.

I thought nothing of it…until she walked in the door. Her hand trembled in mine as she looked at me with fearful eyes. My entire world spun on its axis.

Nina…

It was a mismatch made in heaven: innocent girl from the boonies moves in with tattooed, pierced, badboy engineer.

I came up with a bet, a plan to tutor her in math and coach her through her phobias. What I wasn’t betting on was becoming addicted to her.

But I was living a double life on weekends, and once she found out about it, she’d be gone.

I had to protect myself and that meant one thing: I couldn’t fall in love.

In Jake Understood, pivotal scenes from Jake Undone are retold from Jake’s point of view combined with all-new material from both the past and present time where Jake Undone left off. It can stand alone but if both books are read, should follow Jake Undone. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Review

“Some of the most beautiful things are those we can only enjoy from afar. The unattainability makes the attraction more intense.”

Jake Understood is a companion novel to Jake Undone and while it can be read as a stand-alone I completely recommend reading Jake Undone first. Jake Understood starts off in the present and goes back and forth between giving us glimpses into Jake and Nina’s life now and seeing how everything came to fruition in the past, all from Jake’s point of view.

“What a damn shame that no one had ever pleasured her. It made me angry, but in a twisted way, it invigorated me.”

I desperately love Jake, I loved him in Jake Undone and I am completely head over heels for him in Jake Understood. Penelope takes your quintessential tattooed “bad boy” and shows us his heart and allows us to watch him fall in love, real love, for the first time. Jake is everything, EVERYTHING, I need in a man. Kind and witty while being demanding and responsible. He makes my heart melt and my panties disintegrate.

“I can assure you, there’s nothing gentle about the way I want to fuck you.”

While a good portion of the story is similar and overlaps that of Jake Undone you do get inside Jakes head in those moments, especially those early moments that were oh so confusing for Nina, filled with mixed signals and intense passion that was not acted on. Seeing him struggle with it too gave a new dimension to the story. The best parts of the book for me were hearing about their lives in the many years that have past since Jake Undone ended as well as catching up on some of our favorite of Peneope’s characters (Mitch, Skylar, Allison and Cedric) as well as Ivy who I can’t say I love but also can’t say I hate. Once again Penelope delivered a book I could not put down and reminded me why she is one author I will always one-click.

HIS ONLY WIFE

by Melissa Brown

I didn’t think I’d ever want to devote my life to someone. That is, until Brin.

I was twenty-six years old the day she entered my life, just when I’d given up hope, just when I’d given up completely on having any shred of happiness in my pathetic excuse for a life. After years of indecision, self destruction and soul-searching, she found me.

Brinley challenged everything I thought I knew. She proved that goodness could still come from that hellish compound. Goodness, bravery and love. She changed everything the moment she knocked on the door of my apartment, acting as brave as a lion, even though she was shaking like a terrified mouse stuck in my trap.

And now, three years later, I want her as my wife. My only wife. Till death do us part.

Just us.

And I’ve never wanted anything more.

Check out our 4 SMOOCHES review HERE.

Brinley’s POV

Our first summer living together in Porter’s house, he introduced me to drive-in movies. Well, he introduced me to a bunch of things I’d never experienced before: movie theaters, miniature golf, rock climbing, fast food drive-throughs. and picnics in the field near our house. But my favorite, by far, was the drive-in movie theater.

I’ll never forget that first night when Porter introduced me to the concept. I was new to living in the outside world. Movies and television, on the whole, were still new to me, but the idea of watching a movie outside was almost impossible to imagine.

When we’d first arrived, I hadn’t been sure what to expect. The drive-in was out in the middle of nowhere, next to a shallow canyon. Dust flew inside the cab of Porter’s truck as we approached the ticket taker. The booth was rusted and painted an odd pistachio green. I eyed Porter, wondering just how long the drive-in had been in business. If the dilapidated state of the booth was any indication, it had been quite a while.

“It’s vintage.” He laughed as he pulled the truck away from the booth and approached the enormous movie screen.

“Kinda like me?” I teased, looking down at my modest outfit. Until recently, I’d only worn old-fashioned clothes and my hair in a long blond braid down my back.

“Nah, you’re classic, Brin. Classic.”

They were playing a marathon of old movies, the black-and-white kind. Honestly, I didn’t really understand the difference all that much until Porter explained that Clark Gable’s expressions and slang in It Happened One Night no longer translated in the modern world. I was captivated by the actor’s handsome, debonair onscreen persona. And I was equally fascinated by the hairstyles and costumes of his leading lady—the glamour of the actress, her perfectly made-up face and flawless skin. But most of all, I was entranced by the entire experience of watching a movie on a larger-than-life screen all from the bed of Porter’s truck, salt and butter from the freshly made popcorn lingering on my fingers.

The stars were bright above us as we lay in the bed of the truck. Fleece blankets softened the unyielding metal beneath us, and pillows cradled us comfortably as we lounged. Candy of all kinds and giant convenience-store sodas kept our bellies full and satisfied as we snuggled up together, my legs draped over his, and his arm resting comfortably beneath the small of my back.

In a word, it was heavenly. And I don’t take that word lightly.

“That was romantic,” I said with a yawn on our drive back to the house.

Porter laughed. “You think so? Even though the place is falling apart?”

The wind blew through my hair and I nodded. “Yes. Thank you for taking me.” I slid closer to him and he wrapped his arm around me, placing a kiss on the top of my head.

“I love introducing you to stuff like this. Your expressions make it totally worth it.”

That comment made me self-conscious, knowing that in the grand scheme of things, I was still quite a fish out of water. I fidgeted with my hair and shifted in my seat. “I must look ridiculous.”

“Never,” he insisted, his voice serious. “It’s sweet. It’s like this look of wonder, ya know? You’re experiencing so many things for the first time, and I get to be there for it. Makes me feel really lucky.”

My nose had wrinkled in disbelief. “Really? Lucky?”

Porter had kissed my head again. “Every single day.”

It’s amazing that you can live somewhere for twenty-two years and never feel like you fit in, like you’re home. That night in his truck, I’d known I was finally home. Porter was the home I’d dreamed about for years.

Review

“And now, three years later, I’ve never wanted anything more than I want her as my wife. Till death do us part. Just us. My only wife.”

His Only Wife is a romantic and charming novella that allows us a glimpse into Brin and Porter’s life three years after Wife Number Seven Ended.  The entire store is short and can easily be read in one sitting and while overall you will be left feeling giddy and happy for them, there is also plenty of emotion and a dash of drama mixed in too.

“Guys like me didn’t end up with girls like Brin. It just didn’t happen.”

One of the best things to come out of His Only Wife is the insight into Porter’s mind and seeing how his upbringing help to push him into the world of drugs and bad choices that Brin saved him from. My heart ached for Porter and the way he was simply cast aside by his family long before he ever made the decision to leave the compound. He was just a child desperate for approval and love and in many ways these are still the things he desires most in life.

” I want to stand in front of God, if he exists. I want to stand in front of the people we love and proclaim my undying love to you. I want to be bound to you for eternity.”

Brin has grown so much in her three years since leaving her life behind to be free with Porter. But in so many ways her former life is still tainting her existence. She is too scared of repeating her mistakes of the past to fully move forward. But the one thing she knows is that she loves Porter and will be by his side through anything, even when he devastatingly test that theory.

“I swear you have special powers.” “Making you come is not a special power, babe. But it’s my favorite thing in the world.”

The entire novella is a beautiful mix of captivating story telling mixed with lighthearted fun and sweetness.  I thoroughly enjoyed this quick peek into where Porter and Brin are and where their lives are taking them.

“I am a risk, always have been.” “You’re a risk I want to take for the rest of my life, Porter Hammond.”

Synopsis

It all started with a song.

Roxana Nights was late to another gig, thanks to her first love, and drummer. It’s been years since she left Jordan, but he won’t let her go. Then she hears a voice that pulls her under a spell and changes her whole world.

Trevor Malone just moved to Seattle with his band. Music is his only passion, until he lays eyes on Roxana. He’s never felt anything as strong as the pull to her. Now he needs to find a way to introduce her to his world.

There’s only one problem. A rival clan won’t rest until they’ve taken Trevor’s down. Unwilling to let old grudges die, they target Roxy. Trevor will do anything to keep her safe.

Roxy learns that the world she writes is closer to reality than she ever imagined, and that not all monsters are evil, though some are ruthless.

Will love stay strong when the past comes out? Can they survive the centuries old vendetta?

Review

Thanks to Brandy L. Rivers I can no longer claim that I do not read/love paranormal. Nights Embrace is my third book by her that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. So it is official, I am now a Paranormal reader (shh don’t tell my co-blogger Amie she has been trying to get me to read para forever lol)

Night’s Embrace tells the story of Roxy, a sexy singer by night and down to earth romance author by day. Roxy meets Trevor at a club and is instantly drawn to him after hearing him sing and then he to her when she took the stage. They waste no time embedding each other into their lives and quickly are inseparable. But what seems all kinds of happy and exciting for them is quickly put at risk when demons from the past are determined to cause trouble.

Let’s start with sweet, sexy and Irish Trevor. For an alpha male, Trevor, is so considerate and thoughtful. He was refreshing in the fact that he was never demanding and controlling but still when it came to Roxanna’s safety he was very take charge and confident. Trevor is a wolf but with his Irish lineage we find that instead of a pack like we (or at least this para newbie) are used to, his group is referred to as a clan. In my opinion the clan in the supernatural world is to me a more modern and free thinking way of living for these wolves. While there is no “alpha” they all seem to work well as a unit and fall into line with each other. While very different they still respect the pack structure and when they interact with the Edenton pack (oh yes you get to see them too yippee) the clan addresses and respects Slater as the alpha. Trevor is an Irish heart throb and  I adored him and the way he adored Roxy.

Roxanna Nights has the ability to completely enthrall those around her, whether it is with her stunning singing or the hypnotizing words of her books. But the spell she puts on Trevor is completely new to her. Fresh out of a bad relationship that follows her everywhere she goes the last thing she wants is to jump feet first into another serious relationship. But when Trevor shows up the day after she saw him preform she can’t seem to walk away. She is drawn to him and knows in her heart is more than just his smoking hot bod!

I was lucky enough to listen to this book on audio and WOW I can say I would probably listen to anything with John Lane’s voice now! Especially when he does Trevor’s fabulous Irish accent. The book is completely narrated by him and I personally thought it was very well done. I know a lot of books are done with wither both a female and a male or just the female but hearing the entire story in a sexy man voice kept me paying attention and eager for more.

There are many things Brandy does amazingly well in her books, building amazing and chaotic worlds, intertwining story lines, sexy alpha males, but the part of her books that really makes her shine is in her incredibly strong and powerful women. Even in their weakest moments they stand up for themselves and fight to the bitter end. They would never just sit back and let someone else fight their battles and more often than not they are leading the mob going into war. I can tell in each book I read that Brandy is pouring herself into these women and it is for this reason I will always eagerly read more from her.

Warning: This is just the start. This doesn’t end well. And it’s going to get much worse before it ever gets better.

Cole:
I push her buttons. I want to push them in the good way. Dirty, up-against-the-wall, my-hand-in-her-pants kind of way.
But that’s not possible, because I’m dark and she’s light, and we both know it.
So I push her buttons in the bad way, making her hate me.

Hailey:
If a genie granted me three wishes, I’d ask for Cole Parker to never look at me again, that I’d forget the dark promise in his eyes, and that just once, before he vanished from my life completely, that he’d push me up against a wall and fuck me.
Then I’d go wash my mouth out with soap.

Review

“Of course, I could have sent Jason or Tag to pick her up, and I didn’t. I wanted that privilege for myself, because if I can’t have her bent over my bed, I’ll take her spitting fire at me.”

I will admit it . . . I am a cover whore. A total whore who will pick one book over another because it has a fabulous cover and a catchy title. That is what drove me to get this book and read it. I honestly had no expectations of this being great since it was an author I have never heard of before. But when I saw the cover I was like DAMN I need to read that. Thankfully this first installment in a three part serial was even better than the cover let on.

“I can see how biting him might have been a mistake. The kind of mistake that leads people to get naked against their better judgement.”

Hailey Dashford Reid comes from “that” family. The rich ones who are always in the spotlight. Hailey wishes she could be from any other family because being a part of her has only ever caused her trouble, especially since trouble is what her family seems to specialize in. Cole Parker specializes in keeping bad people looking good. Six months ago he was hired to work for the Reids when Hailey’s dad was accused of murder. Now, with her sister in the forefront of a salacious political scandal, Cole is back in Hailey’s life and she . . . is . . . pissed.

“Stolen moments, that’s all we get. But I’m done thinking that Hailey and I can’t happen. We just can’t happen in a healthy, functional way. Good news is, I do dysfunctional like a fucking pro.”

Cole Parker is a pro at overstepping his bounds and getting involved where people don’t want him. Normally cold and distant but Hailey brings out something in him that after six months of torturing himself he cannot hold in any more. What’s the problem? How about that she can’t stand him. Or, how about he works for her family cleaning up their messes when she believes they should get what is coming to him? Or what about the fact that even though she doesn’t want to want him she so totally does, if only she didn’t believe that he was COMPLETELY out of her league.

“I am a complete idiot. It’s like my panties just take themselves off as soon as Cole wanders past and whispers something filthy in my ear.”

I do not recommend reading this when you need to be quiet or if people can tell if you are blushing. This book would go from laugh out loud funny to so hot that I had to put it down and get a hold of myself in a matter of a few sentences. Cole was deviously Alpha and Hailey is no pushover. The two of them knew that getting together was only asking for trouble but just could not help themselves.

“You cut a key for yourself.”
“I gave it back”
I dig in my pocket, and pull out . . . not my key. The silver shape is too long and it’s got the wrong number of bumps. I glare at Cole, who just shrugs.
“Okay, so I didn’t give it back. But that’s the key to my apartment? Incase you ever need it.”

This story is shaping up to be fun, intense and melt your panties right off steamy. I am beyond excited to see how twisted it can get and go on this journey with these two mismatched characters.

“He might not be a good man all the time, but there’s nothing but goodness here between us.”

Review

Goodness gracious, I am absolutely falling in love with Sarah Castille and her amazing writing.  It doesn’t hurt that her men are deliciously alpha or that her stories are action packed and smoking hot!

“You’re afraid of submission.”

Sarah’s fighter books have me hooked and while I am not usually a fan of novellas I just had to pick this one up.  I admit my curiosity and love for all fighter books overtook my distaste for novellas and I am so glad that it did.  Because this short and arousing story was damn good!

“Some needs aren’t meant to be denied.”

Marcy is training for the state championship and Jax is her brand “spanking” new coach. (hehe)  Jax and Marcy both feel an instant connection that makes rolling around on the mats during practice a bit awkward.  Jax immediately sees the submissive in Marcy that she has yet to fully capitulate to.  He wants to let Marcy’s naughty girl tendencies out but he has demons of his own and is apprehensive about crossing professional lines.  But when he does, boy, this story heats up!

“Who’s in charge?”

“Yes, that’s right.  Me. You do what I say when I say, and you get only what I want to give.”

The BDSM aspect of the story wasn’t over the top or unbelievable.  It was very sensual and tastefully done.  That is one of the main reasons I enjoy Sarah’s alphas so much.  They do not come off and crass or trashy.  They are just large and in charge with really big hearts.

“Should I spank you, little fighter?  Punish you for hitting me?”

Even though Yield To Me is a novella, it in no way felt rushed or forced.  The story was engaging and continued along at a normal and consistent pace.  There is no cliffy.  You get a complete story with endearing happily-ever-after.  If you have enjoyed Sarah’s Redemption Series, then I definitely recommend picking this one up.
