Book: Storm (ashes & embers #1)

Author: Carian Cole

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

The calm before the storm…

I lived in the quiet stillness.

I felt the wind rustle, warning me, telling me to get out of its path.

But I didn’t.

I never stood a chance.

A series of weather and road mishaps leaves me trapped in the middle of a blizzard with a complete stranger.  In the back of a pickup truck. For forty-eight freakin’ hours.

A stranger with long hair, tattoos, and rippling with muscle.

A stranger with an insanely sexy voice and a wicked smile that turned my insides to jelly.

A stranger who held me in his arms, calmed me, and then set a fire in me that I couldn’t put out.

Storm lives up to his name. Beautiful. Dangerously inviting. Tumultuous. Dark. A clash of hot and cold.

He’s used to getting everything he wants.

And now he wants me.

Some people chase storms for the beautiful thrill. What happens when the storm chases you?

I have a passion for the bad boys, those covered in tattoos, sexy smirks, ripped jeans, fast cars, motorcycles and of course, the sweet girls that try to tame them and win their hearts. My debut series, Ashes & Embers, follows the lives of rock band members as they find, and sometimes lose, the loves of their lives.

My first novel in the Ashes & Embers series, Storm, was published in September of 2014.

Born and raised a Jersey girl, I now reside in beautiful New Hampshire with my husband and our multitude of furry pets and spend most of my time writing, reading, and vacuuming.

*Storm has a HEA and is book 1 of the Ashes & Embers series but all books can be read as a stand-alone.  No cliffhangers.  Vandal (book 2) coming in January 2015.

Review

Wow! I really enjoyed this story…although; it took me a while to get into it. I kept rolling my eyes and getting annoyed with Evelyn at the beginning. She is needy and seems to be weak, and I just didn’t enjoy that. HOWEVER, I grew to love her character and understand her better. I ended up being proud of her even.

Storm… what is there to say about Mr. Storm Valentine? Hot, dark, dangerous, delicious, moody, brooding…YES! All of the above! My heart went out to Storm from the beginning. You could see that there was a reason he was the womanizer he chose to be. The more I read, the more I loved him!

The tough romance between Evelyn and Storm was infuriating!  I was on the edge of my seat through most of the book. I was glad that Evelyn stood her ground and wasn’t willing to change her morals even though it almost killed her not to! When the time was right for them to be together, it was definitely worth the wait! Firecrackers! I really enjoyed this read!

I look forward to reading more of the Ashes & Embers series by Carian Cole.

Excerpt

“I’ve never been in love.”

“Lie,” he whispered.

She shook her head. “Not a lie.”

Anders’ lips parted in disbelief. He wasn’t sure why, but something in his chest tightened at her admission. He kicked off his shoes and licked his lips before speaking, his heart pounding so violently he thought it might come through his chest.

“I’ve never wanted to kiss someone as much as I do you.”

“Right now?”

“Ever.” His voice was strong and clear as he spoke, leaving no doubt that he meant what he said. But Josie needed to hear him say it.

“Lie.”

“Lose your shirt, Ivy.”

“Fuck,” she exhaled, pulling her top off. She stood in front of him in nothing but her bra and panties and she had no intentions of answering enough questions to get them off. She was going in for the kill. “You were my first and only one-night stand.”

“Lie.”

Her chest heaved, and she gripped the counter by her sides until her knuckles whitened. “Not a lie. I wanted you that much. Lose your pants, Anders.”

Teach Me by Sloan Johnson Release Blitz

Title: Teach Me

Author: Sloan Johnson

Genre: Adult, Gay Romance

Published: December 2, 2014

Two words stripped Austin Pritchard of the privileged life he’s used to. The moment he uttered the words, “I’m gay,” he realized there is no such thing as unconditional love. Now, he’s gone from traveling the world with his family to living on the streets trying to figure out how he’s going to stay in school.

A chance opportunity changes everything. Austin impresses the foreman and lands a job, but even more, he catches the eye of David Becker, who is determined to teach him that true love doesn’t come with strings.

The only thing David had as a child was love. His family struggled to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. That has driven him to stay focused on his goals; become a tenured professor at a university and save enough money to build a home of his own. It’s not until he sees an insecure college student working on his new house that he realizes that he hasn’t planned on someone to share his life with. He’s about to learn that everything he’s already accomplished is nothing compared to the task of making Austin see that he is worthy of love.

David overturns two buckets and sits on one of them. I

cautiously follow suit and sit on the other. “Were you serious last night when

you told Bill that you were interested in working for him this summer?” David

asks.

“Yes, sir,” I respond, wondering why he’s asking me this.

It’s not like it matters to him, but the way he leans in as he talks to me, I

start to feel like he truly cares.

“Austin, you don’t have to call me sir. I’m just David,

okay?” I nod and find a spot on the floor to hold my attention because I’m

terrified to look into his eyes. He’s too close, too friendly, and already he

makes me want things I shouldn’t with him. “Good. Now, I want you to come to

dinner with me tonight.”

I stand so quickly that I kick the bucket out from behind

me. Everything I’ve been thinking about David is obviously way the fuck off

base because now he’s trying to bribe me. Fuck that. I storm down the driveway,

ready to give up the only opportunity I’ve had to save myself because I’m not

going to let anyone play games with me. Before I make it halfway to the street,

David’s hand is wrapped around my arm, pulling me back.

The urge to spin around and deliver a jab to his chiseled

jaw is somewhere just below the surface. I clench my eyes closed, taking a few

breaths as I remind myself there’s no one to bail me out of jail if I do hit

him and he presses charges.

“Get. Your hands. Off of me.” Rather than listen to my

demand, David’s grip tightens when I try to jerk away from him. Now, I’m

pissed. I turn on my heel and shove David away. “I don’t know what fucked up

game you’re playing, but I’m not about to be your little bitch boy. If me

working for Bill depends on me being at your beck and call, tell Bill I’ll find

something else. I’m not a whore.

David stuffs his hands in the pockets of his oh-so-sexy,

perfectly distressed jeans. And the arrogant fuck looks as if he’s about to

laugh at me.

“Is that what you truly believe I am trying to do?” David

asks. I swallow hard, regretting saying anything. No, I don’t really think

David’s trying to buy me, but no other scenario makes any sense. “Austin, look

at me.”

The tip of his finger crooks beneath my chin, forcing me to

lift my gaze. What I see terrifies me more than the thought of trading my body

for a job. David seems genuinely hurt by my accusation. Rather than apologize,

I walk away. I’m not running this time, but I have to get someplace where I can

sit before my knees buckle beneath me.

I sit on a boulder beside the house and David pushes me over

as he settles back as well. “Austin, what is this about? Have I done something

to offend you or make you feel uncomfortable?”

Has he? No. Yes. Fuck, I don’t know anymore. If I sit back

and really think about it, he’s been nothing but kind to me. “No. Don’t mind

me, it’s been a rough month and I’m a bit stressed.” I chew at the inside of my

lip to stop myself from saying anything else. David can’t know why I’m

stressed. Yes, I’m ashamed of my life as it is right now, but if no one else

knows, I don’t have to see the pity in their eyes.

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.

Review

Teach Me by Sloan Johnson was a powerful and emotional story of a young gay man forced to live on the streets after he comes out to his parents. When school ends, thus his room and board, he has no where to go and ends up staying on the streets with some young homeless. When one of them gets a tip about a shirt term construction job Austin jumps at the chance. While there he meets the house owner and things are not smooth at first. Homeowner, David, is not impressed with the  youth . . . at first. But still is drawn to help him and soon drawn to him for a whole lot more.

It becomes clear quickly that David and Austin have a connection but they also have a ton of obstacles in front of them. One David is a lot older than Austin and a Professor at his college. Austin has a lot of self-esteem issues resulting from being rejected by his parents when he came out. Can these two put their issues aside and learn to put love first?

I have always enjoyed Sloan’s writing and this was no different. She tells a great story and really makes you fall for her characters. Teach Me was sexy but I honestly found that the story was the star here. At times of I loved Austin and at times I was so mad at him and his decisions but the point is that throughout the entire story I was feeling something and that is what a good book is supposed to do. Make you feel. Overall, this was a great first M/M/ book for Sloan and I look forward to reading more in this genre from her in the future!

EXCERPT:

“You know what rhymes with drunk?” Sam asks. “Sex!”

“Nuh uh,” Meredith replies with a frown. “But fuck does!”

“Drunk and fuck do not rhyme,” Mark says with a surprised laugh.

“It’s closer than sex,” she says defensively.

“Everything rhymes with sex when you get to have it with an apa,” Jules says.

“Julianne,” Nate warns her.

“It’s true!”

“What’s that like, anyway? I’ve always wanted to know.”

“You can’t have sex with my husband.” Jules frowns for a second, then a smile spreads over her gorgeous face. “Well, maybe you can.”

“No,” Nate replies quietly, “she can’t. No offense, Alecia.”

“None taken.” I grin at the crazy-hot man. “You’re hot as fuck, though.”

“He really is,” Jules agrees happily. “And the apa…wow.”

“Will you get one?” I ask Dominic, just as he takes a sip of wine, and he immediately chokes.

“Fuck no.”

“Maybe I’ll have to find someone with one,” I say thoughtfully. “Just to give it a try.”

“That’s it.” Dominic stands with me in his arms and doesn’t even set me down as he begins to stalk out of the tent.

“Where are we going?” I look over his shoulder and see the others laughing and watching us leave. I wave happily and they all wave back.

They’re so friendly.

“I’m going to teach you a lesson, tesoro.”

“A lesson?” I giggle and bury my nose in his neck, breathing him in. “I’m kind of dizzy.”

We pass by the barn. I can hear voices, heavy breathing and Meg giggling.

“I think we found Meg and Will,” I whisper into Dom’s ear, as he hurries past.

Merde, I didn’t need to ever hear that,” Dominic grumbles, making me giggle more. He strides around the store building, where I stood a few hours ago with Jules and Natalie, sets me on my feet, and pins me against the wall.

“I dare you,” he begins with fire in his bright blue eyes, “to say again that you’re going to go find another man to fuck.”

“Um, it was a joke, babe.”

His eyes narrow and his nostrils flare, and I know I’m in big trouble.

“Are you jealous?” I ask incredulously.

“Not usually,” he says. “I’m not the jealous type, but what’s mine is mine, Alecia. And you’re mine. What I have with you, I don’t want with anyone else. You’re all I fucking think about.”

He’s gathering my skirt in his hands until it’s bunched around my waist, and he slips his finger inside the elastic of the crotch of my panties and brushes the lips of my pussy, making me gasp.

“Dom!”

“That’s right.” He bites my lower lip, then soothes it with his tongue and pushes his finger farther into my panties. “Me. I’m the only one who can touch you here, or anywhere. This is mine.”

POV before Cassandra or moving to Harmony)

Logan West’s life is anything but ideal.

Mindless sex, tedious business ventures, and the occasional poker game keep him

occupied, but he only lives for one thing: fatherhood.

Oliver, Logan’s three-year-old son, is his entire world. Raising him alone,

Logan finds his only joy in spending time giving Oliver the childhood he

deserves. But every other weekend, he allows himself the chance to live as a

man—a man with deeper desires. Logan knows what he likes, what he wants, and

what he needs. He has no interest in dating and believes there’s no risk worth

taking for romance, but his casual sexual escapes rarely leave him satisfied.

It takes an unexpected decision from his sister Julia and a road trip to the

small town of Harmony with his best friend, Caleb, to open Logan’s eyes to new

opportunities outside his programmed world. It’s not what he expects, but

Logan’s always looking to indulge.

This novella can be read as the first in the New York Times Bestselling Harmony

When the estate next door sells, the last thing Cassandra expects is the

unnerving attraction she feels for her sinfully handsome neighbor, Logan West,

the young and charming single father with a playboy reputation.

It’s through Oliver, Logan’s four-year-old son, who keeps popping up in her

childhood tree house, that she slowly begins to catch glimpses of the

compassionate and wounded man Logan has hidden beneath his strong exterior.

Cassandra knows it’s wrong and that she’s heading for another heartbreak.

Logan will never be able to give her what she wants…love.

It wasn’t his fault she lay broken and battered. He wasn’t

responsible for the injuries covering her bruised body.

Her heart, however, told a different story. She endured the pain of its jagged

held. Her spirit was broken, and only one man was to blame for that.

Cassandra Clarke had known better than to trust her all to a man like Logan

West. She’d thought he was different—a better man than he’d portrayed to

others. A man worth risking it all for.

But she was wrong, and would never make that mistake again.

What happens when you question everything you longed to believe—deny all

emotions you still hold for a man unworthy of them?

Faced with Logan’s persistence, Cassandra must find the strength to keep her

Review

In a relationship for a year, Carrie and Gavin feel their relationship is slipping into the “comfort” zone. Their high sexual relationship is slowly dwindling and everyone knows that communication is key, whether through sex or dialogue. Ambitious Carrie has put a potential job before her boyfriend and he has to be inventive to spend time with her. Gavin shocked me in the beginning of the book with his role playing. Makes me wish I read the previous Club Prive books, to see how clever the role playing can be. Gavin is changing a previous sex club to a dance club. And in this renovation a potential partner offers a French getaway for Gavin and a plus one. Instantly Gavin thinks of Carrie and how this can be an opportunity to combat the stagnant relationship. After a change in plans, Carrie joins Gavin in France. I was given a glimpse of their sweet relationship and could feel the love for one another. But I couldn’t quite put my finger on the character of Gavin. I felt like I could have used more backstory on him. And this leads me to the cliffhanger. It was crazy, I am super anxious to find out what exactly happened in that room! A short, sweet and suspenseful read (at the end). 4 smooches for Club Prive French Connection.
