Synopsis

Lucy Daniels’ dreams are finally coming true. After three years of working for one of the youngest, most ambitious CEO’s in Dallas, she has the opportunity to leave it all behind and begin her career as a photographer.

Lucy’s girlfriends think she’s nuts for leaving a job that pays well and includes a boss who doubles as eye candy. What they don’t know is that Christopher James Barden the Third may be pretty to look at but he has a giant stick up his ass.

However, Lucy is about to discover that Chris Barden has been fighting his attraction for his gorgeous, extroverted assistant since she started working for him. Now that she intends to leave, she’s fair game. Because Chris has wanted Lucy for a long time and he always gets what he wants.

Review

Lucy has been working for a sexy ass of a man for 3 long years. She has been working under him but secretively he would like her to just be under him. Lucy has been working as an assistant but her true passion is Photography. When a successful showing of her work propels her to put in her notice to Chris, he uses that as an excuse to finally make his feelings and intentions known to her.

in love with lucy

This novella by C.C. Wood is a funny, smart and super sexy read. Being a novella I do not want to delve to far into it so that I don’t give anything away.  This story had me from the beginning since I love a workplace romance and I was surprised how much I fell in love with Chris. The forceful way he pursued Lucy had me tingling in all the right spots and still it came off very sweet too!

Not only were the two characters so much fun for me but I am in LOVE with Lucy’s friends and I really hope each one of them gets their own story line. For me, Novella’s are often hit or miss since it can be hard to put a well formed story into a short amount of time. For me this is where C.C. Wood excels where so many others have failed. She always seems to know just the right mix of story line, humor and steam!  I enjoyed every minute of In Love With Lucy  and cannot wait for more from this series.

EXCERPT:

I’m going to have a baby,” Ivy declares as she stops directly in front of me. Well, her belly stopped directly in front of me, the rest of her soon follows.

Yes, indeed, my wife is definitely going to have a baby. Soon.

I’m getting ready—staring at the mirror as I mess with my tie, making sure it’s perfect—when she approaches me. I shoot her a grin, feeling good, feeling on top of my game. Life couldn’t get any better, you know? We’re celebrating today and with good reason.

“I know, sexy mama.” I turn away from the mirror and wink at her. “Trust me, I haven’t forgotten that I’m the one who knocked you up.”

She stares at me, no reaction to my wink or my words. She usually slaps my ass and kisses me. Says something sarcastic at the very least. But I’m getting nothing. And it’s kind of disconcerting. “Archer. I’m dead serious. I’m going to have the baby.”

“I know, babe. And I can’t freaking wait.” I study her, noticing that she looks a little pale and her pupils are dilated. Hmm. “You feeling okay?”

Rolling her eyes, she rests her hand on top of her protruding stomach, rubbing it absently. Then not so absently. As in, she’s clutching her belly like she’s in pain. “I’m in—” She sucks in a harsh breath, holding it for a few seconds. “—labor, damn it.”

~ Book Synopsis ~

From the moment they meet, their connection is perfect in every way but one.

It’s New Year’s Eve, 2006, and Justine James is fronting her dead-end band for a less-than-adoring crowd. But there’s one person there who sees what she could be—one person who changes everything for her.

Dillon Pierce clawed his way up from the LA streets with no one to count on but his best friend, Ash. Their years of struggle finally pay off when their band, Outlaw Rovers, gets signed and their single takes off. With Ash as the magnetic lead singer and Dillon as the band’s musical soul, they’re destined for greatness, provided Dillon can keep Ash from self-destructing first.

Dillon might not be fronting Outlaw Rovers, but he’s always been the only one Justine sees. She’s followed his career from afar and when he shows up at her crummy New Year’s Eve gig, nothing will stop her from meeting him. They forge an intense connection, rapidly moving from friends to musical soul mates. Justine wants much more, but she’s not willing to climb over groupies and industry bottom-feeders to make it happen. Dillon becomes a fixture in her life, but she has to figure out how to keep him out of her heart.

Outlaw Rovers begins to implode as Justine’s star is on the rise. The years that follow bring equal parts fame and ruin. For Justine, a new love supplants her old heartbreak, and Dillon has to reboot his life after losing nearly everything that matters. Despite the odds, Dillon and Justine remain devoted friends and musical collaborators. After all the missed chances, wrong turns and painful detours, can they finally find the happiness together that seemed destined from the start?

Excerpt

From Chapter 3:

The steel gate clanged behind her. “Justine, wait.”

Justine spun around to face Dillon. He was breathing hard from sprinting after her.

“That is not what I came here for!” She stabbed a finger towards the backstage entrance. “I’m not some fucking groupie who’s happy to wait in line just to give you a blow job!”

He held up both hands as he moved closer. “I know that. I know you’re not. And that’s not what I wanted from you when I asked you here.”

“Right. I forgot. You wanted to talk about music.”

“Yes, I did.” He stepped closer, into the pool of light from the streetlight behind her. His eyes were wide, his pupils tiny pinpricks, and he was still breathing hard, harder than he should have been from just chasing after her.

He’s lit, Justine thought miserably. Could the night become any more of a cliché?

“So where were we going to fit in the rock and roll? Before the sex but after the drugs?”

He sighed and raked a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry. I was hanging out with Ash after the show and things got a little crazy. You know how it is.”

She laughed, short and humorless. “Yeah, I know how it is.”

“Listen, I still want to hang out with you.”

“I’m not waiting around until the coke wears off and the girls go home—”

“Not tonight,” he cut her off. “It’s too crazy back there and I meant it when I said I want to talk to you. I do. But not here, like this.”

Justine looked down at her feet while she thought about it. She was a smart girl and the smart thing to do would be to turn around and go home. But she also knew she and Dillon had something. Music, for sure. Maybe something else, too. It was the “something else” that made her nervous. She was attracted to him, she couldn’t lie to herself about it. But she didn’t want him like this, like that girl in his dressing room had him, and not if it wasn’t going to matter to him.

Deleted Scene:

This used to live somewhere in Chapter 6. In the end, it didn’t serve to move the story forward so it got the axe. But I really did love the scene. It said a lot about the dynamics of the characters at this point in the story, Dillon and Ash sharing this intimate creative moment together onstage while Justine watches from the wings every night and falls in love with Dillon over and over:

Justine took a long swig from her water bottle. One of many lessons she’d learned on the road was that if she didn’t get serious about hydration when she came off stage, she’d be sorry the next day. Playing a concert every other night, sometimes every night, had been an amazing trial by fire. She’d learned how to play to crowds of all kinds, ones who wanted to hear her and ones who had no interest at all. She’d figured out how to draw them in, seduce them, own them. It was a pity she didn’t have better music to offer them, but she did the best she could with what she was singing. Sometimes it was all in the delivery.

In those back-to-back dates, she’d also figured out how to survive on the road. Her voice was less fragile than some, but she was still prone to overuse and exhaustion. She figured out the hard way to avoid smoky rooms and not to over-exert herself off stage. And water. She could never drink enough water to replace what she lost on stage. She’d also learned that drinking and drugs were a death sentence for her performance. She was no good for singing if she did either one. She’d lost her taste for both after watching how it owned Ash and Dillon.

Her good sense told her she should be resting in her dressing room or on the bus, unwinding after her set. Instead, she was hovering in the darkness of the wings, just to watch something she’d seen dozens of times at this point.

She rarely watched Outlaw Rovers play their whole set, but she never missed Valley of the Years. Dillon wrote it, of course. He wrote all their songs. At its heart, it was a rock ballad, but he’d written an acoustic guitar intro for two that he and Ash played together. For the audience, it was a bit of a stunt. Ash, who sang and never played, would strap on an acoustic, and Dillon would trade his electric for an acoustic, too. The crowds ate it up. But Justine heard it for what it was—a lovely composition, so nuanced and layered it almost sounded classical. Dillon played the meaty part; Ash’s abilities lent themselves to a strictly supporting role. But they were so good together, perfectly balanced.

When they played the duet, she could feel the weight of the long years of their friendship. Facing each other onstage, spinning out the delicate, interlocking chords, it was like watching them speak without words. Every performance found Justine in the wings, holding her breath as it unfolded, watching them exchange glances, sly smiles and silent cues.

Most of the time, though, she couldn’t take her eyes off Dillon. He was born to play the guitar. It seemed like an extension of his body. Watching his hands on the strings was hypnotic. Listening to the way he made the song rise and fall, the notes wrapping around her and moving through her, was something that never got old.

When the duet began to wind down, a roadie came out to take Ash’s guitar and he made his way to the mic. Dillon wrapped up the intro, bringing it to a heart-rending end, before another roadie came to trade off his acoustic for an electric. The song opened up into a surging rock ballad then, good in its own way, but in Justine’s opinion, the opening was the magic. The opening was when she fell in love with Dillon night after night.

Review

This story follows 2 people involved in the music industry. Justine James is the lead singer of the band Failsafe. Dillion Pierce is the lead guitarist/producer of the popular rock group Outlaw Rovers. One New Year’s Eve gig in Los Angeles, changes the lives of these 2 and opens the door to relationship. When drugs, sex, and rock and roll collide, will Justine and Dillon have their happily ever after?
Amanda took me on a journey through the lives of Justine and Dillon. Chapters were described as months/years and it was good touch.  It did help me keep up with the time frame as it did change often. I was about 20% of the book when I felt like I didn’t know what the book was going to take me. It is one heck of a ride and I kept telling myself “there just has to be a happy ending.” I am glad that Justine has her head on straight. The temptations of the road never got to her. Now Dillon was a different story. “Always” depicts a growth within a relationship in a long time frame. Sometimes love isn’t so quick to grow. And there can many realistic hiccups along the way. This love story was not all rainbows and butterflies. Death, success, desire and strength molded these characters.
Music lovers will enjoy this book since it takes you behind the scenes and on the road. Now for those that love a good smutty read, you would have to go elsewhere. While there is sex, you were told it happened. No descriptions. But there is a surprise at the end 😉 It was a nice change and a good read. 4 smooches for Always by Amanda Weaver.

synopsis

This is the tale of first and last loves. And those that come in between…

Jack Harrison is a relentless overachiever who leaves little in the way of compromise. A businessman to the core—he’s hell-bent on being at the top of the food chain. After all, no one can trip you up if you’re on top, as he likes to say. The problem for Jack is there’s only one thing that continually trips him up—and that’s her.

Amelie Rose, with a name like poetry and a heart of gold, as her father always said, is a free-spirited photographer who has managed to land a job at one of the top travel magazines in the world. This is both a blessing and a curse since Amelie never stays in one place for long and has refused to commit to anything—ever.

It might seem to the casual observer that these two have almost nothing in common. But fate would disagree. The story chronicles Jack and Amelie’s lives from childhood into adulthood, beginning when they meet as then eight- and ten-year-olds at summer camp specifically designed for children who’ve lost too much.

As fate steps in, and that first summer seals the deal, they come to depend on each other in ways neither of them expected, with each summer bringing them closer than the last. As they come to terms with life and loss, with hanging on and letting go, they’ll teach each other that some bonds are meant to last. Together, they will travel the world, meeting in various places where they’ll come together, and fall apart, all the while struggling to discern if the other could possibly be the one.

This unlikely love story takes us on an adventure where two people come of age, fall in and out of love, and question the role timing plays in it all.

Their story is proof that neither time nor distance—perhaps not even death—can destroy what love creates.

So it seems the only question left to ask is whether love is enough?

excerpt

Jack had been thinking of the letters when the girl’s voice caught his attention. Although he was pretty sure she wasn’t here last summer, he’d never paid much attention to whatever it was they discussed in their little powwow they held over there—but this time he found himself anxious to hear what she had to say. Whatever it was he was going to use it to destroy her. To crush her once and for all. Keep her out of his business, out of his life, out of his thoughts. Once is all it’d take, he knew this all too well. He watched as she stood and addressed the group. She was peppy, confident even—although not overly so. The good news was this was her weakness. It left room for people like him to create cracks, to manipulate the situation. But at the same time, she was the optimistic type. Nothing seemed to keep her kind down for long, and he hated her for that. These types of people were the worst.

Jack leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and observed as she casually flicked her blonde ponytail over her shoulder. She paused, looked up, and smiled directly at him. It was an evil smile with a lie behind it. That much Jack knew for sure. Whatever she was about to say, it was going to be stupid. He was going to hit the jackpot later when he rubbed it all in her face. As she spoke up, her voice cracked a bit but she recovered quickly. “I’m Amelie and I’m eight. This is a poem I wrote in honor of my dad. He was a famous poet. But now he’s just dead.”

The counselors smiled at one another, clearly a little uneasy and then nodded at the girl to go on. She was proud, her smile unwavering. It didn’t even falter on the word dead. This was going to be so good.

“Roses are red.

Violets are blue.

My dad is dead.

If you’re here… yours probably is, too.”

The room was silent. The counselors looked nervous, wary. But the girl, she just smiled, and then glanced at Jack—or was it a wink? For a moment, he couldn’t believe it. But then, as she sat back down, she curtsied in his direction, and that one movement solidified it all. The more he thought about it, the more he was sure that she had, in fact, winked at him. Clearly, this Amelie girl was messing with him.

When I read the blurb for this book I was very intrigued, I love books with relationships that span from childhood into adulthood. Somewhere With You covers a lot of heavy, emotional issues and shows a very real side to relationships.  Jack and Amelia couldn’t be two more different people. Jack is a successful business man with his whole future planned out. Amelia is a free-spirited photographer who goes with the flow and doesn’t know what city or even country she’ll be in next week. When this story begins Jack is ten and Amelia eight. They meet at camp and spend the next seven summers together developing a special relationship. As adults they continue to keep in contact, spending pockets of time together, sharing important milestones and falling in love. But for these two people the time is never right and it seems like life is always getting in the way. The sex in this book was fade to black so you don’t get much detail at all. Personally I wished there was more detail because I felt like I missed a large aspect of Jack and Amelia’s relationship. I’m not sure if it was because we only saw small snippets of each character over the span of many years, but I felt a bit of a disconnect with the characters, I never really felt fully invested. Overall this was a good read that kept me turning the pages wondering what was going to happen next.
