Review
Scarlett Collins had her life with her boyfriend of nine years, Jake Walker, planned. She was just waiting for the man she had loved since she was fifteen to make it official. Surprising him at work one day, Scarlett walks into his office and her worst nightmare. A child of infidelity and then divorce, Scarlett didn’t trust easily, and Jake shattered her trust and love for him that day.
”The life I knew is forever gone.”
Kyle Harrington, the dependable son of British immigrants, left his dreams of becoming a chef behind to return home to run to his family’s pub as his father is forced to slow down due to his failing health. Kyle works long hours with no help from his drama queen sister, Ella, or his absentee, bad boy brother, Clive. He’s exhausted, and he has no life outside of the pub, not that he’d have time to have a life anyway.
”…I needed to be a good son and be there for my family.”
Kyle and Scarlett have a serious meet-cute in the pub when Scarlett does what she always does – runs when things get overwhelming. She left before Kyle could get her number, but they meet-cute again through Kyle’s mom, who is a client of Scarlett’s at the salon she owns with her best friend, Amy. Their attraction is obvious, and when they meet for the third time, at Kyle’s pub when he comes to her rescue, they start to date.
”I didn’t really know what love was until I met you.”
I really enjoyed the build up between Kyle and Scarlett. This wasn’t insta-love, but it definitely was insta-attraction! After everything they have each been through in previous relationships, they were both the right combination of wary but excited. They both needed and deserved this happiness together, and it was so sweet and romantic watching this relationship grow. There was just enough angst to make their relationship something they had to think through and fight a little for which in turn made it a much more dynamic and dimensional one in the end.
This is Nicole De La Cruz’s debut novel, and she did a great job her first time out of the gate by giving her readers a well-written and nicely developed story and very likeable characters. The plot line kept me interested and turning the pages, and I loved Kyle and Scarlett’s sweet and steamy romance! I’m looking forward to more books in this series.
A solid 4 smooches for me!
