Synopsis

“What lies beneath my veiled perfection is the ugly truth—my truth, my reality, my destiny.”

Vivian Graham has an acceptance letter into Harvard, a badass tattoo, loyal friends, ties to marijuana, a penchant for Dunkin’ Donuts, and her pesky V-card.

Everyday she takes the Red Line to her job at The Green Pot in Boston while her friends enter the coveted, black iron gates to higher learning. The ramifications from a tragic accident have put her life on hold while time marches on for everyone around her.

After graduating from Harvard Law, Boston native, Oliver Konrad, moves to Portland to start his career and his life. Three years later, after a horrific discovery, he returns home to trade in his three-piece suit for leather work boots and his suburban home for a condo in Cambridge.

All he brought back to the East Coast was an aversion to pillows and secrets he keeps hidden behind a mysterious locked door. Oliver’s days are predictable and his nights are lonely until he meets Vivian on the subway. Her long raven hair, green eyes, and mile-long legs are achingly sexy, but the way she “innocently” fingers and licks her Boston Kreme doughnut can only be described in two words—complete torture.

When their paths cross at every turn, laughter is abundant, friendship is easy, and love is unintentional. However, their future seems improbable.

Review

“What lies beneath my veiled “perfection” is the ugly truth—my truth, my reality, my destiny.”
Vivian has lived with the scars from her past for a long time, letting it effect her in a way that puts a complete halt on her love life and ever truly revealing herself to a man. That is until she meets Oliver. A man she thinks she could open herself up to and reveal all her secrets. But Oliver has dark secrets from his past as well, maybe even darker than her own and effecting him in a way that could ruin not only their relationship but that could destroy himself as well.
“I’m an idiot, she’s trouble, and together we’re … deranged!”
I LOVED this story. Completely  and utterly loved and adored this book. It was beautiful, funny, suspenseful, had my crying, laughing and biting my nails hoping, but not knowing, if it was all going to work out.
“You’re the very best thing that’s happened at the very worst time. I feel like I’m in the middle of the ocean and you’re my life raft, and sometimes I get so frustrated that we’re not making it to safety fast enough.”
Vivian and Oliver were brilliant characters. Both so individually funny that I laughed out loud several times. Both so strong and brave in their own ways and a couple that deserved a happily ever after. I’ve never wanted two people to end up together as much as I did these two.
“She’s stamped rejection on your head so many times you have brain damage and can no longer see you make her skin crawl with your dick talking out of your mouth.”
I wanted Vivian to be my best friend: she was sweet, hilarious, kind and fun. Oliver, well honestly I wanted him for myself, he was just as hilarious, sweet, sexy, caring and struggling but trying to move on and never wanting to hurt Vivian.
“In spite of all the confidence Oliver has given me and all the fears he’s taken away, there’s still lingering remnants of insecurity that hold their own memories and may never go away.”
I loved the plot and the length of this story. It was long which meant we were able to get depth from the characters and the issues that were raised weren’t solved within a page or two. We were thrown into their lives and were with them step by step as they tried to overcome their pasts. It was definitely sad and frustrating at parts but it was also light and funny in others giving it the perfect balance.
We had no idea what each of their secrets were in the beginning, I couldn’t even guess as to what had happened and once they were revealed I was completely shocked and that wasn’t even the ending, we had to go through Oliver trying to overcome them and wondering whether he would drive Vivian away.
“Lost. I’m lost in this moment. I’m lost in every moment, floundering around as one day blurs into the next. I won’t look back, but I can’t see forward. Am I waiting to be rescued? Will I dig my own way out and move forward? Or, will I perish in this dark hole?”
I honestly loved this book, one of my favourite ever reads. But only complaint is that I want more. More Viv and Oli and what happens next because when the end of the book came I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Can’t wait to see what the author does next and can say without a doubt it will definitely be a book on my TBR. Brilliant characters, brilliant plot and brilliant writing!
