Synopsis

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince.

I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.

I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.

I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.

You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

Review

It wasn’t that long ago that I discovered L.H. Cosway.  Immediately her books had me hooked.  Every one of them is so incredibly unique, so astonishingly emotion provoking, so poetically written . The list could go on and and on as her books are in one word;  amazing.  Even though I only recently found this magnificent author, I forged ahead and read everything the woman has written of the adult variety.  I am in love with these books.  All of them have touched a deep part of my heart but something especially beautiful happened when I read King of Hearts.  This book was just EPIC.  I still cannot get this fascinating and marvelous story out of my head.

“Memories were a powerful thing.  They could at once set you free or take you prisoner, hold your entire life captive.”

We get to meet King in Hearts of Fire, the second book in this series, and I was absolutely shocked he got his own book in this series.  Because King in Hearts of Fire is pretty much a homeless drunk who rarely bathes and is very angry at the world.  But King does carry around a very important picture with him everywhere he goes.  This picture is of Alexis and this is their story.

“And I fear if I made you my queen, I could no longer be king.”

Get the tissues ready, guys, because this book takes place before King is a homeless drunkard traveling with circus Spektakular.  Well part one does anyway, so you will watch Oliver King fall so incredibly far and it is such a hard journey.  One that broke my heart so hard.

Do you ever wish, Alexis, that your heart was just that little bit smaller, so that you didn’t have to care quite so much?”

“Never.  The bigger our hearts, the more beautiful our souls.”

But no worries, I will give you one small spoiler and tell you that you will get your HEA.  It is hard won, though.  Just as you are torn down the first part of this story right along with Oliver, you are then built up in the second half so beautifully.  Oh, the feels,  the tears, the absolute happiness and anticipation of what you know is to come.  It was so emotional.

“She was from another life, the one I’d left behind, but having her there, my hands on her skin, made me feel like I was stepping out of this life and into a new one.”

This is so far my number one read this year.  How could it be anything but?  It is brilliantly written, emotional, sexy, and so damn heartwarming.  I simply cannot stop thinking about it and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.  I would give King of Hearts all of the stars in the sky if I could.

“I dreamt of you last night.”
