One Lucky Hero by Codi Gary Review

Synopsis

She was looking for a little fun…

Violet Douglas wants one night where she can be normal. Where she can do something for herself and not be just her sibling’s guardian. So when she spies a tall, dark and sexy stranger, she’s ready to let her wild side roar. The last thing she expects is to see her one night stand one week later, when she drags her delinquent kid brother to the Alpha Dog Training Program.

He wasn’t looking for a commitment…

Sgt. Dean Sparks is used to keeping women at a distance, and yet he can’t resist Violet’s snapping wit or smile. So when he suggests a friends-with-benefits arrangement, it seems like the perfect solution to their undeniable attraction. No emotional entanglement, just mind-blowing sex.

But with their lives becoming more and more entwined, Dean realizes that casual isn’t enough for him anymore. And as Violet finds herself leaning on Dean in a way she never has, will her fears put more distance between them? Or can she let go of the past, and take a chance on happily ever after?

Review

‘She had never understood the romance novels that had a hero and a heroine fighting one minute and making out the next, but right now, she totally got it.’

Codi Gary is an author that is constantly surprising and delighting me. Her books are always full of depth, growth and wonderful stories and One Lucky Hero is no different. This book was exactly what I wanted on a lazy and rainy Sunday and left me warm and happy in the end. One Lucky Hero is the second standalone (and first full length book) in the Alpha Dog series and I loved it even more than the first.

“I don’t want anything serious, you know that, but with Violet . . . I mean, the girl has got drama up to her eyeballs and trust issues that would make most psychiatrists want to put her in a lab and study her. But I just can’t get her out of my head.”

When Violet and Dean hook up one night after meeting at a concert their chemistry is undeniable but neither are in a place for a relationship and know that nothing more can come of it despite the pull they seem to have over one another. But when Violet’s brother ends up in the troubled youth program run by Dean they can no longer avoid each other but instead try to be friends. These two have so much sexual tension and it is clear they both yearn for each other but their current life situation make relationships nearly impossible.

“I’m not living Dean. I had no idea what it felt like to be alive until you.”

I absolutely adored Dean. Protective and alpha tot he core he wants to distant himself from Violet since he wants to be deployed again and yet he just cannot stay away. He has never been drawn to a woman the way he is drawn to her. Violet is raising her brother and sister and has no time for anyone else in her life. She constantly pushes Dean away and yet when he is near she can’t help but give in. Everything about the premise of this made me think I would be frustrated by these two and yet it was written in such a way that I never felt like that. Codi Gary always delivers a clean and fresh story. If you haven’t read her books yet I highly urge you to give them a shot, I have never been disappointed!

Synopsis

From the author of Maybe in Another Life—named a People Magazine pick and a “Best Book of the Summer” by Glamour and USA Today—comes a breathtaking new love story about a woman unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiancé who has finally brought her back to life.

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

Review

‘Everything that happened before today feels different now, and I have no idea what happens after this.’

The thing that makes books so spectacular is her ability to that unbelievable stories and make them feel so incredible real. There are easy outs or clear winners. There isn’t one guy who does something awful so it is abundantly clear who you should be rooting for. In One True Loves Emma is very deeply in love with two men. One she married and lost and one who came back at a time and helped healed her.

“Are you kidding? You are my one true love. I don’t even think I’m capable of loving anyone else.”

When Emma loses the man she has loved for nearly ten years at sea the day before their one year wedding anniversary she is sure she will never move on. Then as it always does time helps heal and years later Sam re-enters her life and starts to put the pieces back together. But then one night while out to dinner with her parents and her now fiancé, Sam, she gets a call she never expected. Jesse her husband has been found and is coming home. How can she choose between the man she grew up loving and thought she lost or the man who taught her how to love again.

‘Good things don’t wait until you’re ready. Sometimes they come right before, when you’re almost there.’

This story left me breathless and desperate to keep turning pages to get to the end. The only thing I really have to say about it was that for the first half of the book there simply was not enough dialogue for me. While the internal dialogue was incredibly interesting for me personally I just need more conversations to keep the story going. But the dialogue picked up in the second half and I was reading with baited breath waiting to figure out who she picks and how it all comes together.

‘By loving the two of them , I am no longer sure about either. And by being unsure, I might just lose them both.’

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a phenomenal storyteller. She gives you a story you never knew you wanted but am so glad you read. Love triangles aren’t always my thing, they are hard and I get overly attached to one guy so often I just avoid them. But I am so glad I took this leap and read One True Loves. It was a beautiful and unique love story. I honestly cannot wait to read more by Taylor in the future. Trust me, don’t be scared, just dive into this book and get lost.

Idol VIP

Libby

I found Killian drunk and sprawled out on my lawn like some lost prince. With the face of a god and the arrogance to match, the pest won’t leave. Sexy, charming, and just a little bit dirty, he’s slowly wearing me down, making me crave more.

He could be mine if I dare to claim him. Problem is, the world thinks he’s theirs. How do you keep an idol when everyone is intent on taking him away?

Killian

As lead singer for the biggest rock band in the world, I lived a life of dreams. It all fell apart with one fateful decision. Now everything is in shambles.

Until Liberty. She’s grouchy, a recluse—and kind of cute. Scratch that. When I get my hands on her, she is scorching hot and more addictive than all the fans who’ve screamed my name.

The world is clamouring for me to get back on stage, but I’m not willing to leave her. I’ve got to find a way to coax the hermit from her shell and keep her with me. Because, with Libby, everything has changed. Everything.

“You know,” I say conversationally, as I kick back, “I want to fuck you right now.”

Libby jerks as if pinched and sits a little straighter, before getting a hold of herself and slouching as if she’s completely chill. Cute.

She gives me a smirk and sips her water before drawling, “And what? Mark you territory? Assert your manly dominance?”

“Yep.” I slide my gaze to hers. “But mostly I just want to fuck you all the time.”

God, I love the way her lips part and body flushes with heat. So subtle, but there all the same. It makes me hard as steel, my balls squeezing tight. I don’t look at her but pretend I’m observing the room. The lights are dimming for the movie now, the empty chairs in front of us obscuring our lower halves.

Slowly my hand falls to space between us and smooths along her hip. She delicately shivers as my fingers trace down her thigh.

“What about you,” I murmur, lightly toying with her skirt in the darkening room. “You want to fuck me, baby doll?”

“Right now, I want to kick you,” she gets out between clenched teeth. “Keep your hands to yourself. There are nosy ass people everywhere.”

“They’re all watching the movie. Not us.” Focusing on the screen, I keep my expression neutral as I ease my hand under her skirt. Her skin is smooth and warm. The movie starts in a blast of music and the familiar old logo as I trace over her knew and up her soft thigh. “And that wasn’t a ‘no.’”

She makes a cute growl in the back of her throat, but her legs part just enough to give me room to delve between them. Her inner thighs are hot and damp, and my cock twitches.

The storyline rolls along, my touch idly roams. Libby remains utterly still but I can practically feel the tension vibrating within her. When the tip of my finger skims the crease where her thigh meets her lip, her breath catches, legs parting wider.

“Have I mentioned how much I appreciated this new skirt-filled wardrobe?” I whisper, lightly drawing circles along her skin.

“Brenna’s idea.” Her hips shift just a bit, following my touch. “Right now, I’m missing my shorts.”

I smile, my eyes on the screen, my fingers drifting to the edge of her panties. “Later, you can put them on and we’ll play ‘Fuck the Farmer’s Daughter.’”

She grunts, a stifled laugh, which turns to a strangled whimper when I pluck her panties. Her voice turns breathy. “I’m trying to watch the damn movie. I’m not interested in fooling around.” She moves a tiny fraction, nudging against my finger.

In the dark, I grin, heat and lust pulling my abs tight. “I’m sorry,” I saw, not sorry at all, “But I don’t believe you. I’m gonna have to check.”

Sometimes words aren’t necessary.

There are fireworks when this out-of-control bad boy agrees to no strings with this tatted up, dominating mechanic.

What happens when you’re attracted to the wrong person?

AIDEEN

I didn’t expect to feel so drawn to my best friend’s father when I first meet him.

It’s unexplainable and most of all, it’s unexpected. He drinks too much, is rough around the edges, and is so obviously into casual sex and nothing more, but there’s just something about him that calls out to me.

I’ve thought my heart was battered beyond repair, but maybe I have been wrong.

“There was something so sexual, so carnal, so intense in the way Jensen looked at me.’’

JENSEN

She is my son’s best friend and I know he wants more, but I can’t help it. Whenever she is around or her name is mentioned I’m turned on. I’m not used to denying myself to feeling so strongly for a woman so young, but she gets me.

I can’t do a damn thing to stop these feelings.

No amount of alcohol helps.

I didn’t think it could be possible to feel so drawn to a woman, but it looks like I have been dead wrong.

“I want her to want me just as madly as I do her.’’

They shouldn’t and yet…

They can’t resist each other.

Excerpt:

“I’m the worst fucker, right? I’m going after the girl my son has feelings for. I actually fucked the girl he’s after. Tell me I’m not bad news now.’’

I cringe, but even then I don’t feel it. I’m supposed to be angry on Hal’s behalf, to be disgusted that a man could go behind his son’s back like this, but I’m not. I want to forget everything and Jensen can do it. I want to be wanted, so wanted that all control has gone out the window and I’ve only known this with Jensen. It’s only Jensen always on my mind, even more than Yann these days. It’s Jensen I crave in a way I’m still unfamiliar with.

“I’m just as bad, then. I only found out today and I still want you.’’

He stops breathing before he lets out a long relieved sigh. “You don’t want to be with him?’’

I shake my head. “Not at all.’’

He comes back to me and forces me to walk backward as he takes a hold of both my hands and locks my wrists behind my back. He’s crowding me and I’m letting him lead. “Do you have any idea how crazy you make me?’’ He backs me against his bike, my ass pushing against the slick machine as he tugs on my wrists behind my back until I lower my back slightly. “Do you know how dangerous it is for me to feel this way? I’m losing it with you, beautiful. I’m lost on the very edge of the cliff now and at any time I’m going to fucking jump. You better be ready to jump with me and fall,’’ he growls out before he releases my wrists to grab my hips and bring me on the bike, my legs wide open, my back to the handle bars. He throws his long leg over the saddle and faces me before he grabs me again and sits me over him until I feel his thick erection against the apex of my thighs, pushing against my aching core.

I lose all train of thought. I can’t process his words, the way his eyes seem desperate for me. All that’s on my mind is the way his hands feel on me, the way he’s already so hard, so ready for me. All I want is him inside me. Now. On his bike.

“Jensen,’’ I say in a sigh as we lock our mouths in a deep kiss that shakes me whole.

I grip his head, my fingers weaving through his short hair as his tongue battles with mine in a delicious war that sends my blood into overdrive. I move against him, pushing just enough to feel his cock rub over my clit through our jeans.

“I want to hear you scream my name until you’re hoarse, beautiful, and you’re going to,’’ he says in my mouth as he unzips my jacket and takes it off me, sending it to the dirty ground full of dead leaves, dry sticks of wood, grass, and moss.

Marriage To A Mister by DeAnne Cherry Review

Lady Fleur Osborne knows several things to be true: her father would likely continue to turn away every suitor at the door, her sister could very well end up unmatched by fault of her clever mouth alone, and that Fleur herself is perfectly happy to say goodbye to the marriage mart and devote her days to caring for her father and his estate.

But fate, it would seem, has little care for Fleur’s wishes, and its plans are made known by way of two matchmaking fathers, a Viscount’s unexpected proposal, and a murderous flowerpot that thwarts their carefully laid schemes.

Evan Woolf has been content to stay away from the ton and its mischief, happily sequestered in his dusty library with his work, the choice in no way due to the chance of seeing Lady Fleur again. It has been too long since he has seen her, and the pain between them has deepened the chasm to bounds impassable.

But when the two collide in a scandal, the likes of which only France could provide, Evan finds himself given a second chance, and it’s one he won’t squander. And in the end, the flower and the wolf may find themselves in love once again, against all odds, and with a match made forever.

Review

‘She wasn’t so ignorant as to expect a love match – those thoughts had long ago left when her first two seasons crushed her idealistic expectations of love and devotion.’

In all honesty I have ready very very little historical romance beyond that of Jane Austen and it is definitely not something I reach for typically. So when I went into this book it was with few expectations and I just want to say how surprised I was how quickly I got completely wrapped up in the fun plot and loveable characters. Since I have not read much historical romance I can not speak to the accuracy of the Regency setting but instead I can say that for someone who reads about a book a day this one both kept my attention and had me smiling from beginning to end.

“How do I feel? How do you expect me to feel An arranged marriage, all due to a blasted flower pot.”

Years after becoming estranged from her closest friend and childhood crush, Evan, Fleur finds herself engaged to be married to his brother. Evan has always felt he was in his brother’s shadow as simply Mr. Woolf while his older brother is the Viscount. After leaving for school he never returned leaving Fleur behind. But after a flower pot disaster forces him into a situation he never dreamed would be true both Evan and Fleur have to not only get reacquainted but find a way to move on from the pains of the past.

‘Somehow by some random chance of what some would call a disaster, he was going to finally have her, and he promised her father that he would make her happy. Only he did not know how he was to accomplish it.’

While placed in the Regency era I found Marriage To A Mister to be a timeless romance. I was constantly laughing and rooting for these two characters to work through it all and by the end I was completely excited to try out more Regency Romance. I thin kif a book can turn you on to a whole new genre than it must be pretty good, right?
