Tess Richardson, a college student pursuing her degree in forensic accounting, is heading to Greece to study for a year there at the American university while working an internship in the finance department of Stephanos Shipping. The daughter of a cop and a district attorney and the sister of an FBI agent, Tess has a finely honed sense of right and wrong and a very healthy respect for rules. But even her rules won’t protect her heart when she slams into Niko Stephanos.

Niko Stephanos is the heir to the Stephanos Shipping fortune. Niko is completely taken by Tess, he’s never met anyone like her. Firstly, she doesn’t cow to him or his whims, and she’s so confident in her convictions, so sure of their importance. Add that to the fact that’s she wrapped up in a tiny, but beautiful package, and she’s the prize he can’t help but want. He begins to pursue her aggressively, but while Tess is undoubtedly attracted to the gorgeous billionaire, she can’t help but see the warning signs going up – he’s her boss, and a relationship between them would be breaking the rules. Cornering her on a night when they’d both been drinking, Niko pushes Tess hard for more, and her reaction surprises him. It’s then that he takes a good, long look at himself, and he doesn’t like what he sees. He calls her into his office at work, and he proposes a special project to Tess: she’ll be his friend, and she’ll teach him what it means to be a regular, normal guy.

As they spend more and more time together, they can’t help but fall hard for each other, and they inevitably give in to their attraction. This is no fling, though, these two are falling in love. He starts noticing some things at work that aren’t quite right, though, and as he begins to look into them, his suspicions grow. Then Christos is attacked, and Niko overhears a conversation that changes everything. At the same time, Tess, who has been pulled off of some projects by Christos, stumbles across her own inconsistencies. It all explodes when Christos is attacked again. As the Stephanos empire crumbles, will Niko ever learn the truth? Will he lose Tess because of all of this? Will Tess turn on Niko and his family or could she be his savior?

This was the first book I’ve read from Selena Laurence. It was a cute, sweet, light story. The romance was a bit lacking, though. There were some sexy moments, but I never really felt the burning, all encompassing attraction between Tess and Niko that was portrayed. There weren’t any epic, heart-racing, swoon-worthy moments where I could feel what the author was telling me was there. The romance between Niko and Tess played a secondary role to the suspense portion of the story, and that was what kept me turning the pages.

I do wish that both the romance and the suspense plots were better developed. There were a lot of places where this story just dragged on with scenes that were unnecessary and did nothing to further either plots, and I fought not to skim in those parts. I think had there been more scenes showing us Tess and Niko falling in love, along with more scenes that delved deeper into the unfolding of the suspense plot, I’d have felt differently about this book. There was no real lead up to the big reveal of the criminal portion of the story, it just kind of exploded out of the blue with little more than a cursory explanation of what happened. There was also a six-month lapse in time between them seeing each other again; a few scenes there showing them pining for each other or working towards one another would have made their undying love declarations more believable for me. 3.5 smooches from me.

When it came down to it, to that moment of truth, the point of no return, would Adam be able to go through with the final piece of his plan? Or would Elle’s humanity reach out to him?

He believes he’s a monster; she sees the good in him. He questions who he’s become; she knows exactly who he is. He wanted her pain; she can’t turn away from his. You know how people say that a book had them ‘on the edge of their seat?’ Yeah, this book didn’t do that for me; no, it had me up and out of my seat, pacing at 1:00 AM and cursing loudly throughout the first third of it. I was shocked, I was unsettled, nervous, and, most surprisingly, I was angry, so freaking angry. But much to my surprise, my ire was aimed not at Adam, but at Elle! I know, I know, she was the victim here! But despite that fact, I couldn’t help it. She made me absolutely furious in parts, like groaning out loud and expletive-filled ranting mad. And yet, in other parts, the very things that made Elle so special – her compassion, her insightfulness and her amazing ability to see through the evil to the good in people and love them despite it – had me both adoring her and loathing her, sometimes within the same scene. Such a baffling contradiction of feelings, they literally churned through me in a confusing, schizophrenic battle where neither was ever really the overwhelming victor. I just had to accept that I both loved and despised this character equally.

Of course, while reading the book I, at least, had the benefit of Adam’s inner dialogue, which gave insight to the reader of his turmoil and conflict and was one of the key essential elements in this character’s development. But, Elle didn’t have that; she only had the amazing capacity to see the good within him in spite of the evil of his actions. I found it very unsettling just how much I empathized with and even liked the villain of the story, Adam. I was sympathetic to his reasons, even if I didn’t care for his methods. And that fact – that I preferred the villain to the victim – was what left me feeling so unsettled after reading this book. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing! This book caused me to feel so deeply, so vividly, so explicitly and that is a testament to just how well written it was!

I’m not the type of reader who can just pick up dark erotica any old time, plop myself down on the first cozy surface and read it. It’s the type of thing I need to prepare myself to read. It’s not that I don’t like dark erotica – I do – but it’s that I need to be in the right headspace to accept what’s going on, to be able to wrap my head around it and then to shake it off when I’m done. I’m still shaking this book off as I write this review, well over twenty-four hours after I’ve finished it, and I suspect that it’ll be staying with me for a while. But this was what was assigned to me, so prepared or not, I went in, apprehensive as hell, but ever the good little Red Cheeks Reads reviewer, I did it. And now having finished it, I can honestly say that I’m glad I did. I can’t say that I “enjoyed” this book–it’s not the kind of book you enjoy. I did appreciate the experience, and that’s what well-written dark erotica is: an experience. This book the pulled me in, doused me with terror, immersed in anger and feeling the desperation and the heartbreak of the characters and their plights. I had to be ripped to shreds before I could be set free to heal. This book definitely got a reaction out of me. It had my heart pounding, it gave me goose bumps, it got me out of my seat and pacing, Kindle in hand, as I read it.

If a dark romantic/psychological thriller is not your thing, this book probably won’t be for you. But if those feelings, that kind of literary experience is your thing, I’d absolutely recommend this one. It was incredibly well written and richly developed, with obviously relatable characters, and it was full of that delicious shock and awe and those hair-raising twists and turns that this genre is renowned for. If you can handle being angry, if you can take being a bit disturbed, and if you don’t mind a little pain with your pleasure, then you’ll be thrilled with Natasha Knight’s Retribution. Who knows, maybe it’ll even get you up and out of your seat, too. 5 smooches from me!

It was nine o’clock on a Saturday night and I was totally out of my fucking element. A bottle of red wine tucked under one arm. A bouquet of wild flowers in the other. A condom tucked into my wallet, just in case. I was in foreign territory, and my entire body knew it – tense shoulders, my heart beating like a drum, and arousal barely contained beneath the surface.

Finley was standing at the doorway, watching me with a confused expression.

She looked gorgeous, makeup free, pink-painted toes, hair mussed and loose. Little cotton pajama shorts and a tank top that hugged her lush breasts.

“Maple’s not here.” She said the words, but she knew as well as I did I wasn’t here for Maple.

“I know that.” My voice was sure and confident.

“Then why are you … oh.” Finley shifted her weight, her eyes dropping from mine as she saw the wine and flowers. She could read it all, plain as day. I knew she could see my intentions, my uncertainty, and underneath it all, my desire. Maybe it was the desire to fix everything I’d broken, or maybe it was just my desire for her as a man desires a woman.

Normally when I felt that primal urge for sex, I headed to West’s bar. I’d pick out a woman for the night. Share a few drinks with her, a few laughs. Later, we’d head back to my place and fuck until dawn. And that was it. I’d be set for a few months.

This … with the courting and the nerves … it was nothing like my standard operating procedure.

I’d never felt so stripped bare and vulnerable. Never put myself out there so completely with a woman before. But then again, Finley was unlike any woman I’d ever met.

And she was still just standing there. “Can I come inside?” I asked, heart in my throat.

Review

Kendall Ryan’s books are always a good angsty without being over the top read and I always get so much enjoyment out of reading them. Slow & Steady was no different. I really loved the first book in this series and was looking forward to tremendously. But every book is about a different couple, so you can definitely read all of the book in this series as standalone’s.

I liked Slow & Steady even more than the first book in this series and that might be because it is pretty much the story of a single mother and I always find that those appeal to me more than most. Watching a big macho alpha man fall in love with a child always gets me right in the feels and Greyson and Maple did an excellent job of that. It could also be that I loved it because Single Mom Finley has kind of hit rock bottom, stripping at night to support her and her daughter as a last resort. It has been rough on her since her husband passed in the military. I also could have loved it because Greyson swoops in wanting to save Finley and Maple. It really is the sweetest thing ever.

“I want to do this, Fin. Let me in, okay?”

It even had a little action and I am not talking about the kind between the sheets. This was a sexy, sweet, action packed with romance. I really enjoyed it. Definitely pick it up!

“What’s your problem?” he asked.

I tried to rip my hand free from his grip, but he held on without even the least bit of effort.

“I’m pissed,” I growled.

“Why?” he countered.

I looked across the room at the mirror, and glared at his reflection.

“I don’t want to tell you why I’m pissed. Suffice it to say, you’re the reason, and that’s that,” I growled.

He tightened his hands on my wrists.

“That’s not it. Tell me fuckin’ why, or I’ll make you tell me,” he hissed.

My fists clenched.

“Because you fucking pouted last night instead of talking to me. Then made Core spend the night and take me to work, when I didn’t want him to be there. I wanted you to be there. But you were being a titty baby,” I yelled.

He moved me until my ass met the counter, crowding so close that I was sure he was either going to beat me or fuck me.

Hopefully the latter over the former, if I had a choice.

“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!” I exclaimed.

I waited.

Nothing.

“Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!” I cried.

I waited.

Again, nothing.

“Shit,” I said, opening my eyes.

“Done?” Casten asked from where he’d trapped me against the bathroom counter.

“My clothes are getting wet. In fact, I think my pants are soaked all the way through,” I grumbled, leaning forward until my upper body was laying across the counter.

Casten sat up until all that was touching me were his hips, where his massive erection dug into my ass.

“You’re cute,” he said, reaching up and pulling my hair out of my ponytail.

I glared. “I’m not cute.”
