Synopsis

We all need a hero…let the Saints of Denver begin

Orlando Frederick knows what it is to be leveled by pain. Instead of focusing on his own, he’s made it his mission to help others: sports stars, wounded war vets, survivors of all kinds. But when Dom, a rugged, damaged, sinfully attractive cop, makes his way into Lando’s physical therapy practice, he might be the biggest challenge yet. Lando loved one stubborn man before and barely survived the fallout. He’s not sure he can do it again.

Dominic Voss is a protector. The police badge he wears is not only his job, it’s his identity, so when he’s sidelined because of an injury, the only thing he cares about is getting back on the force. He expects Lando to mend his body, he just doesn’t realize the trainer will also have him working toward a hell of a lot more. As attraction simmers and flares, Dom sees that Lando needs repair of his own…if only the man will let him close enough to mend what’s broken.

Review

‘There was nothing Subtle or hidden about Dominic Voss and that forthrightness was irresistible and a balm to the hidden parts of me that were just as broken as his body was.’

Having been a long time fan of Jay Crownover I, like many others, became overly excited at the idea of a novella to bridge the Marked Men series with the Saints Of Denver series. Add to that the fact that she has for the first time ventured into the m/m genre and I could not start reading this story fast enough. While this can very easily be read as a standalone it has even more soul and depth if you have read the struggles of these two lost men in the Marked Men series.

‘He kissed me like he was angry that he wanted to kiss me,’

If there has ever been a character that deserved a happily ever after more than Orlando Frederick I do not know of them. Hidden away by the love of his life because he was scared to admit he was gay only then to lose said love after a bad fight about their predicament, Lando has been living in a fog ever since. Content to run his successful physical therapy business and knowing that love is just not meant for him, Lando is blindsided when injured cop Dom strolls in needing his help. An instant chemistry that neither can deny, Lando must figure out if he can lose his fear that Dom could get hurt again on the job and if what they have is worth the constant worry and stress.

‘I wondered how something so rash, so sudden and unexpected, could feel so necessary, so vital.’

Dom and Lando have amazing chemistry and their joint stories drew me in from the first page. Full of cameo’s from the men and women from the Marked Men series as well as a bit more with Sayer the lead female in the first book in the Saints Of Denver series, it was great to see where everyone ended up. Between the budding relationship between these two men and all the appearances from the others the only thing I wish was different is that it would have been a tad longer, but for me personally that is usually the case when I read any novella. Still for a novella this one was by all means not short and done in such a classic Jay style that at the end I was left with a smile on my face and giddy for the upcoming book Built.

You know how it’s really loud on a plane, that constant, distorted hum overhead while in flight? So that even when the person in say, 2A, is talking to their neighbor in 2B, they have to raise their voice some, or lean in, to be heard?

Imagine then, if you will, the volume at which Sawyer Beckett would need to bellow from the last row of first class to ask me, the actual occupant of 2A, something.

“This is all your fault, Kendrick! Even this punk kid I’m gonna kill agrees with me! Don’t ya’ Ryder? And don’t think I didn’t catch that his name sounds like RIDE HER!” Sawyer screams as though we’re the only ones on the plane. I don’t have to turn around to know Emmett’s crimson face is ducked in mortification and everyone seated around him is currently wondering, terrified of the answer, if security checked him thoroughly enough for stashed weapons… since he’s clearly displaying some insane tendencies.

And I’m unsure exactly what’s “my fault”- not that I’m gonna yell back and ask. Laney sticks out her hand to stop the stewardess, who unfortunately for her unknowing self, chooses now to walk by. “Are you people still possibly serving the very large lunatic back there alcohol?” Laney asks her pointedly.

The attendant offers a sheepish smile and shrugs. “No ma’am. The lady with him already slipped me a note forbidding it. But I believe he may be coercing the frightened young man seated in front of him to order and then stealing the drinks from him.”

“Okaaaaay,” Laney drawls out. “Just a thought.” She holds up a finger, then uses it to tap her chin in the most condescendingly ‘I have a polite suggestion’ manner possible. “How ’bout we stop serving him too then? Sound like a plan?”

If you really tried, you just might be able to catch a drip of the sarcasm in her question.

Harley
It all started last summer at cheerleading tryouts. I don’t count sophomore year when I was completely invisible—at least I hope I was.
No, it was a week before school started, and I’d just gotten my braces off. Shelly had insisted I try out with her, so we were all at the gym. The boys—Trent included—had been playing basketball on the half-court until Coach Taylor sent them outside. They’d pretended to be pissed, but we knew they were really there checking out the new recruits.
My turn went okay. I did some easy cheers, and then came the jumps portion. I did The Banana, and Stephanie nearly squirted cherry Icee through her nose.
Meg leaned over and giggled, “What was that?” under her breath, and Stephanie shouted “Next!” like it had been some sort of Broadway show from which I’d just been cut.
I kept my head down as I walked off the court, hoping my ponytail would hide my burning cheeks. I bit my lip, doing my best not to cry.
Usually I’m not so weak, but that had been about as humiliating as my stupid non-jump. I sat on the metal bleachers staring at my shoes until finally I grabbed my bag and decided to leave.
I’d just opened the metal door when WHAM!
Next thing I knew, I was lying on the ground with my head in somebody’s lap. A voice was saying something, and my eyes flickered open. The sun was shining right in my face, and the first thing I was able to make out was… lavender.
Trent’s head was inches from mine. My stomach flipped, and I bumped our noses as I tried to sit up.
“Hey,” he laughed, leaning back. “Harley, right? Can you stand up?”
“What?” I tried to stand, but my head felt like I’d run into a brick wall. I caught his shoulder. It felt really nice and firm.
“You ran into a brick wall,” he said. “Sort of. David had just thrown the ball, and I missed it. It kind of knocked you out.”
I reached up to touch my forehead, and as he helped me up, my face went into his chest where I caught a deep breath of the woodsy boy-smell coming off him. For a head injury, this could be worse.
“I was knocked out?” I timidly looked up at him, and he smiled.
The sun was shining all golden behind his head, and it made him look like a knight. Or one of those hot angels. Just then Shelly came outside.
“There you are. Sorry, just got my—what happened!?”
“Basketball hit her in the head,” Trent said.
I wanted to die. What a dork!
“I think she hit her head on the wall,” he continued. “She might need to go to Urgent Care.”
“Oh my god!” Shelly cried. “Bring her inside. I’ll get Coach Taylor.”
“I’m okay,” I said. My knees were wobbly, but I couldn’t tell if it was my head or Trent’s arm tight around my waist. He was holding my hand even.
Shelly held the metal door open, and next thing I knew, David had joined us.
“Hey, Harley, I’m really sorry.” He caught my other arm, and I felt Trent’s grip loosen. David’s dark head was in the shadow of the gym, and he was definitely not an angel. Go away, David.
“It’s okay,” I said, trying to smile and scoot back toward Trent. “Really, I’m fine.”
“I can drive her to the doctor,” Shelly said. I tried to give her my most discouraging look. Just then Stephanie joined the mob.
“What’s up? Harley? Are you okay?”
“We’re taking her to Coach Taylor,” Shelly said.
“What happened?”
“Harley might have a concussion,” David said like it was the most exciting thing to happen all summer.
David was distracted by Stephanie, and I leaned on Trent’s arm. He caught my waist again and smiled, and everything turned perfect. The humiliation of tryouts, the humiliation of being beaned in the head with a basketball, none of it mattered as I stood there with Trent’s arm tight around me.
Until Coach Taylor showed up and ruined it.
She took me away and led me to the bleachers. Then she started shining her tiny flashlight in my eyes. “Do you feel sleepy? Like you might vomit?”
Nice. I shook my head, and David started bouncing the dumb ball again. Coach Taylor shouted for all the boys to get back outside and told me to sit where she could keep her eye on me. I watched the guys leave, and just as Trent was going through the door, he stopped and glanced back. It was because he wanted to stay with me, I was sure, and I tried to catch his eye. David shoved him through the opening before he saw me, and I sighed, turning back to the court. Stephanie was watching, but she quickly flicked her attention back to her sheet and called the next name.
As I rested on the bleachers, everything felt sort of soft and glowy. It seemed like music was playing somewhere—and not because of my head injury. It was because I knew Trent was The One, my hero. I tried to remember if I’d thanked him, but it didn’t matter. I was sure he’d ask me out.
A week later we all started junior year, and the next time I saw Trent, he was walking down the hall holding hands with Stephanie.

Synopsis round.jpg

When I was a little boy, the best thing about the holiday season was unwrapping presents on Christmas morning — tearing off the paper and tossing it on the floor. Now that I’m a man, I like to unwrap slowly, deliberately, taking my time to savor what lies before me. I still like to throw the wrapping on the floor, but now I know the best gifts come wrapped in lace.

And unlike when I was a kid, I won’t get sick of this present by New Year’s. I’ll definitely be playing with this girl day after day after day.

After six years avoiding my hometown, the last thing I expected when I returned was a wannabe bad girl to unwrap my heart and rip open my soul. But that’s exactly what happened. Now if I can just get the hell out of my own way, maybe I’ll finally get the best gift of all — her!

Come get unwrapped by Drew this holiday.

I sat back and studied the canvas. I’d finally gotten it right — the way his lips turn up in that smile that makes both my heart and panties melt. It had taken me over a dozen tries to get it just perfect, but I finally had. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any better. I thought if I could capture Drew’s smile on my canvas, my pain would somehow lessen. Because I’d always have his image, that his leaving me wouldn’t hurt so bad. It hadn’t worked. The pain in my heart was just as sharp, just as overwhelming as it was yesterday and the day before. I knew I’d never get over him. I knew it like I knew the deep blue color of his eyes, the rough spots on his hands. I knew it like I knew the way his lips tasted, the feel of his thick brown hair.

I grin up at him. “You know, before this, I’d have taken you for a hard rock, or maybe even a bluegrass fan.”
“It’s the beard, isn’t it,” he asks.
“And the man-bun.”
He laughs, a short rumble of sound. “Want me to let it down?”
Yes. Maybe.
“Not necessary. Man-buns are hot. I blame Jason Momoa. There was only so much watching him bang Khaleesi the female population could take before they wanted their own Khal Drogo.”
Shit. I really don’t know what the hell I’m doing. Because it sounds a lot like flirting to me. Instinct tells me flirting with Ethan Dexter isn’t something to do lightly. And there’s the fact that I don’t go for athletes. At all. I don’t care how fit they are. Or how confident. I don’t like sports. Football bores me. Oh, I know tons about the sport—kind of impossible not to in my family—but I don’t want to pretend that I care when I’d rather talk about other things.
Dex’s eyes crinkle again, and he turns toward me, leaning an elbow on the table. “Doesn’t Momoa have a beard?”
I wave my hand. “Who has time to look at his beard when his muscles are on display?”
I most certainly do not look at Dex’s phenomenal arms.
“So your stance on beards is?” His gaze so strong I feel it in my toes.
My breathing picks up. “Don’t particularly like them.”
It’s the truth. And yet I can’t help but look at his. It’s dark, framing his mouth, which should be a turnoff for me. Only it draws all my attention there. To the shape of his mouth—the upper lip a gentle curve, the lower lip fuller, almost a pout. There’s something slightly illicit about the whole effect.
I clear my throat, glance up, and find him watching me through lowered lids. He doesn’t seem particularly put out by my frankness.
“What don’t you like about them?”
Is he serious?
He stares at me.
I guess he is.
Taking a quick sip of my drink, I search for an answer. “They’re just so…fuzzy. Prickly.”
He moves in, not crowding me, but putting himself at arms’ reach. He smells faintly of cloves and oranges. It must be his aftershave or cologne, but it works for me.
I’m distracted by it and almost jump when he speaks again. “Do you know this based on experience, or are you making an assumption?”
My gaze narrows. “Aren’t you the philosopher.”
“You didn’t answer the question.”
“Fine. Assumption.”
His lips quirk. “You should find out if your assumption is true before you condemn the beard.”
“Is this some sort of creepy way to get me to touch your beard?”
A challenge flashes in his eyes. “There are a few guys at the bar sporting beards. You could go ask them. But I figure since we know each other…”
“Not that well.”
“You’d rather ask a stranger?”
“You’re assuming I care enough to ask, Slick.”
His teeth shine white in the shadows of the club. “I know you’re curious. You’re fairly twitching with wanting to know.”
I flatten my hands against the table and glare. Is it just me, or is he closer? Close enough that I can see his eyes are hazel, lighter around his cornea with a starburst pattern. I wish I could see the colors, but he’s painted in shades of blue and gray right now.
And he’s watching me. Patient. Calculating. Tempting.
“It’s always the quiet ones,” I mutter before taking a breath. “Okay, I’ll pet your fuzzy face.”
“Hold up.” Without hesitation, he reaches for my drink and takes a sip. “Liquid courage.”
A strangled laugh leaves me. “Because I’m sooo scary.”
“You have no idea, Cherry.”
I think I growl at him. I definitely want to give his precious beard a good, hard tug. But he simply lifts his brows at me. “Get on with it, then.”
This cheeky bastard is totally playing me. And here I am falling into his trap. Because I cannot look away from his beard now. More specifically, his lips, which are parted just slightly. An invitation. A dare.
Shit. I’ve never been very good at ignoring a dare.
I hate that my hand trembles as I reach up to touch him. He stays perfectly still, his arm casually slung on the edge of the booth behind me, his body turned toward mine. But I don’t miss the way his breathing has kicked up just slightly.
I hesitate, shy almost. Hells bells, I’m only going to touch a bit of facial hair. Why does it feel like we’re two kids tucked in a dark corner, playing a game of “I’ll show you mine”?
Annoyed with myself, I close the distance between us.

Review

YES YES YES, Kristen Callihan, you give good cover, girl.  Goodness gracious that cover is sexy as hell and so very very Dex.  Now that I have gotten that out of the way, let’s talking about  my deep deep love for this series.  I love me a smoking hot sports romance and Kristen really is my favorite author in this genre.  I was salivating  for Ethan Dexter’s book, but I just didn’t know if I was going to love it like I loved The Friend Zone.  Gray is kinda special to me but I will you tell that Ethan was definitely giving him a run for his money because I loved this book so hard!

Jesus, there’s something downright dirty about beards.  Fucking naughty.  All i can think about now is sex.  About other places with hair that’s both soft and wiry.  My mind fills with images of this thick, full beard running over my clit and how it would tickle and tease.  And it makes me frantic.’

This book started off from get go so incredibly hot.  Goodness sweet, quite and thoughtful Dex really is a dead sexy bearded man bun having alpha God in the sack!  Holy smokes!  He is just so frank he had me blushing from the tips of toes to the roots of my hair.  This is his and Fiona’s story.  Fiona is Ivy’s feisty tinker bell like sister for all of you have forgotten.  And Dex has been waiting a long time to finally have Fi notice him.

“I’ve been waiting two years for you to see me.”

The angst in this story was really as much as in the past two books but I still really enjoyed this one.  It was incredibly sexy and had a few surprise turns and twists that I do not want to ruin for anyone.  Basically the plot problems are the distance these two live apart and Dex’s stardom but it still gave me enough angst that I was thoroughly entertained and honestly Ethan Dexter could just say dirty things the whole novel and I would be sold.  The man is a dirty talking genus.  And he is just so incredibly sweet on top of all that.  Kinda perfect if you ask me.

‘I see Ethan Dexter; he shines for me.  And I burn hotter than the sun when I’m in his orbit.’

Yep, and so did I.  This book is probably what I consider the hottest in the series.  The sexy time was out of this world scorching and pantie melting hot.

‘God.  He’s a wall around me, unrelenting, hot.  I want all that strength pounding into me.’

What a fabulous series this is.  I can’t get enough of it and I am seriously hoping for a m/m with one certain sexy as hell football player.  Give it to me now, Kristen!

EXCERPT

“Do you know how beautiful you are?” he demanded.

Disbelief flickered in those blue eyes. “Thank you, but—”

He closed the distance between them. She gasped as he grabbed her hand and laid it on his straining erection. “This is what you do to me. From the moment I laid eyes on you, I wanted you. By the end of the night, you’re going to believe it, sweetheart. Make no mistake.”

Her entire body shuddered, and power surged through him. He wanted to make her scream with pleasure, to cry his name as she orgasmed; until she couldn’t remember the last time another man ever laid a hand on her. Possessiveness was not a natural part of him, but Rick didn’t fight the urge. Instead, he embraced the basic male tendency to hunt. Conquer. Claim.

Her soft hand paused, and then gently stroked him. Rick groaned, and she seemed surprised that she had caused the pleasure. Bolder, she squeezed around the fabric of his pants and followed the ridge from base to tip. He held perfectly still and allowed her to explore. She took a step closer, until her breasts pressed against his chest. Immediately, her nipples hardened into perfect tight pebbles, and Rick fisted his hands to keep from touching her. Her arms came up to hold his shoulders, and her sweet breath rushed over his lips as she arched up on her tiptoes.

Then pressed her lips to his.

The tentative kiss rocked his world. Her lips were soft and sweet. He allowed her to explore the line of his mouth, gaining confidence, until the tip of her tongue slowly pushed into his mouth. With a low growl, he opened his mouth for her, desperately trying to hold back his instinct to throw her on the bed and spread her thighs. Her tongue swept in, thrust against his in a teasing battle.

Rick reached out and lifted her up against him. She made a little mewling noise, but he swallowed it as he claimed her mouth the way he craved. He drank deep, drowning in her taste as the scent of strawberries and flowers swam in his head. Within seconds, her body slumped against his and she surrendered, letting him drink his fill as her fingers thrust into his hair and held his head still for her own demands. Slowly, he eased back and looked down at her face.

Her lips were swollen and wet. Aqua eyes held a dazed sheen as she stared back at him. “Oh, my,” she whispered. “That was so…good.”

Nightmares.

Sterling and Ruthie have more things in common than they realize, even though from the outside it doesn’t seem like they do.

Blood.

Sterling is a decorated war hero.

Ruthie is an ex-con.

Their two worlds should’ve never collided, but fate has a way of turning life in the direction least expected. Now Ruthie has to try to come to terms with the fact that she’s in love with a biker who’s also a decorated Navy SEAL. One who leaves for months at a time with little to no advance warning, taking her heart with him each time he goes.

Pain.

Sterling has a lot of things to overcome in order to have Ruthie, the biggest being her mind.

She doesn’t think she’s good enough.

He thinks she’s perfect.

Now it’s up to him to show her just how right he can be.

“So, what’s your story?” The man at my side asked me.

I looked up from peeling the label off my beer and stared at him.

He was so beautiful, but everything I would never go for again.

Muscular.

Military.

An Alpha.

Those three things combined made for a man who always felt he knew the right way.

“What do you mean, what’s my story?” I muttered, looking back towards my label.

“Where’d you grow up?” He was a persistent bastard.

“Typical shit upbringing. My dad left my mom. My mom felt the benefits of having me were outweighed by the negatives of having me, so she gave me up for adoption. I never found anyone to take me in, so I spent twelve years in the foster system. When I turned eighteen, I was kicked out on the street, and I did the only thing I could, found a man that could support me. But he also liked to hit me. After a year of that, I killed him,” I said softly.

If knowing that fact was going to scare him off, I wanted to get it over with before I made a friend out of him. I wasn’t a fan of false niceties. I was a rip the band aid off kind of girl.

“Sawyer said you just got out,” the man continued.

I sighed and finally looked at him.

He was handsome.

So handsome that it was making me tongue tied. I wasn’t hot like most of the other women in the room. I was decent looking, but I wasn’t in his league.

Which was why I was looking at the label of my beer the majority of the time instead of at his face.

He’d been sitting beside me ever since I’d sat down, and I couldn’t figure out why.

In fact, he was downright gorgeous. Everything that made him wrong.

And the beard just made it even worse.

I couldn’t resist a beard.

Never could…and never would.

Tall with muscular arms. Wide shoulders. Deep green eyes and a messy mop of dirty blonde hair tumbling over his eyes, he was every woman’s dream.

His beard was one of those that was grown out of necessity instead of style, the kind where you were out in the desert and not near a razor kind of beard.

Which was conducive with the party we were having in honor of him coming home from his deployment in Afghanistan.

“Do you want me to leave you alone, because I’m sensing that from you,” the man said.

I sighed and looked at him, caught by those beautiful green eyes.

“Sterling, I’m one fucked up mess,” I finally said.

He grinned. “Well that makes two of us. I’m a fucked up mess molded into a ball of denial. Trust me. My fucked up mess could easily compete with your fucked up mess.”

I laughed.

If only that were true.

I’m a married mother of three. My kids are all under 5, so I can assure you that they are a handful. I’ve been with my paramedic husband now for ten years, and we’ve produced three offspring that are nothing like us. I live in the greatest state in the world, Texas.

Blurb:

“I’m pregnant.”

Molly Gilmore had a good life before she uttered those two stupid words. While preparing to graduate from culinary school and building up the courage to make a move on her hot, sugar-cookie-smelling pastry instructor Marco, she can’t wait to finally have the GREAT life she’s always dreamed about, instead of just the good one she’s been living.

Always known as the quiet ninja, she fully intends to stay hidden in the shadows with her nut-job family, so they have no chance to embarrass her around the man she’s crushed on for two years. Unfortunately, her family has other plans. When they yank her straight out of her comfort zone, she finds herself starring in the craziest train wreck she’s ever witnessed.

Molly ultimately gets a more exciting life that doesn’t revolve around school, but she’s pretty sure the man of her dreams won’t be sticking around long after her family gets ahold of him. There aren’t too many guys who can handle smelling like pee, having the whole world know how he masturbates, and being forced to eat an entire bag of dicks.

Join the Chocolate Lovers and Chocoholics gang for one final story about love, baked goods, making poor life choices, and remembering how important family is—even if they drive you insane.

Mostly because it’s illegal to kill them.
