Synopsis

This book can be read as a standalone.

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Review

OK. I loved Tangled by Emma Chase and yes I loved the rest of the books in that series and I have loved the first book in this series but none of them compared to my extreme love for Tangled, until now.  Because I just adored Sustained!  I mean seriously fell in love with the characters laughed my butt off cried my eyes out adored this book!

Oh Jake, you are so very Drew like and you had me hooked from the very first page.  Sustained is told from Jakes POV and yes, the name Jake the snake came to mind because he is kind of a dirty low down playboy and a touch ,well, just mean.

“Sorry, Cinderella, but the clock struck twelve.  The coach has turned back into a pumpkin and it’s time to collect your glass slipper.  I never pretended to be Prince Charming.”

OH, Jake.  Sigh.  He is a one and done kind of guy usually with a different woman most nights until he gets some very very bad possible news.

Syphilis.”

So, right when he is having to take a breaky break from the wham bam, thank you mam, he meets an adorable family of misfits; six little ones ranging from teen to baby all being taken care of by their young mid twenties aunt.  These adorable children won me over immediately and I just fell in love with them.  And it wasn’t long before Jake was right there with me, despite his trying to stay away.

“But Rosaleen. . . her baby-blue gaze warms me down to the marrow of my bones.  Because it’s thankful and adoring and brimming with hero worship.”

Oh, this book had all the damn feels.  I was dying laughing one moment and crying my eyes out the next.  As a mother I understood the loss and love this family experienced and it touched my heart so much.  And Jake stepping up to help, well he went from zero to hero for me in just a couple of chapters.  Goodness, let us talk about Chelsea (the aunt caregiver of these amazing and troubled children).  She was just so good and giving and caring.  Her character was amazing and the sexual chemistry between her and Jake is immediate.  But there is quite a slow burn and the sexual tension was just SO good.

“Do you want me?”

“All the time.  I can’t remember not wanting you anymore.”

This is definitely one of my favorites of Emma’s.  The writing is top notch and the characters were heart warming.  I laughed, I cried, and I hoped for this family to overcome life’s tragedies.  But Jake stole the show of course.  There is nothing like seeing a playboy fall.  They always fall so hard.

She give me love, love, love, crazy love…
