Asking For A Friend by Lauren Blakely Review

5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

I was only trying to help a friend. I swear. I was legit asking for a friend who was finally ready to date again.

I knew what she wanted in a man — smart, funny, ambitious, well-read (no, the sports section doesn’t count), and plays a wicked game of badminton.

So I did what any good friend would do. Posted it for her. It seemed like a good idea at the time — I’d weed through the candidates, and bring her my top picks.

But then he responded.

Is it wrong to date the guy I screened for my bestie? Not asking for a friend.

REVIEW:

I’ve made no secret about the fact that Lauren Blakely is one of my favorite authors of all time. There are many reasons why she has landed on this personal list of mine, but it all boils down to the simple fact that I always get something more than a happily ever after when reading her books. Of course, hers are always well-written, sexy romances about endearing characters swept up in engaging and fulfilling love stories. But Blakely kicks it up a notch with stellar storytelling, richly developed and fully-fleshed out characters, and she fills the pages with the kind of details that bring the story to life in the reader’s mind. Not just vivid descriptions of the background, locations and scenery, either. Blakely dives deeper by including all sorts of interesting, fun, quirky bits of trivia, facts and anecdotes that weave together with everything else to form the history of the characters and the couples. This next-level character and story development is often overlooked, but never by Blakely, and it’s one of my favorite things about her books—I always take away something more than a rewarding and satisfying happily ever after from them.

Asking For A Friend starts Blakely’s new Boyfriend Material series, and now that I’ve read the first book, the next two have skyrocketed right to the top of my list of most anticipated books of 2020. A workplace romance with a creative spin, I couldn’t help getting caught up in the natural chemistry between Linc and Amy. Their delicious banter, so witty and smart, was a fantastic build-up to what they would become. I loved how they clicked in person, but it was the unguarded, unexpected, unplanned way they connected through very modern-day means that really drew me in. The author alludes to the hook of the plot in the blurb, and I don’t want to go into more detail than she offered there, but I will say that I waited with heart-racing anticipation for them to connect the dots as their relationship built.

Blakely penned a story here that was so easy to get lost in. The connection between these characters was sincere and authentic, their attraction to each other visceral, and their longing for each other palpable. It had all these big-screen, romantic comedy feels as it played out on the page and in my mind. This is one of those rare kinds of stories that remind the reader of why they read romance—the kind of story that sends them in search of another romance novel.

I am so excited about this series. Asking For A Friend was romantic and sexy, sweet and sassy and everything I hope to feel and experience when I crack open a romance novel. A top favorite of the year, Asking For A Friend by Lauren Blakely gets five smooches from me!

Best Man Teaser.jpg

EXCERPT:

The dress is a strapless Carolina Herrera, with layers and layers of whisper-thin organza. It blows my budget and the “less is more” mantra out of the water, but like Eva said the day we bought it in downtown Denver, when you know, you know. The locale is the sumptuous Midnight Lodge, nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, every tiny detail of the place costing my father more than an entire year of his salary. The twenty-three members of the bridal party are assembled. It’s the scene of every little girl’s fairytale fantasy.

My fantasy.

At least, the one I’d been harboring up until today, when everything changed.

Eva smiles at me. “Ready to make your dreams come true?”

I stare at myself in the mirror. I look like Cinderella, if the wicked stepmother had just materialized at the castle on Cinderella’s wedding day and gunned down Prince Charming in cold blood. I’m also about three minutes away from losing the mimosa I’d polished off earlier that morning at breakneck speed. I go to chew on my nails but then I remember Eva painted them, and the last thing I want is for him to see the chips.

He notices things like that. He’s an observer.

And I want to be perfect for him.

Him.

The wrong him.

Oh, god.

I go to chew on my lip, but I can’t do that because they’ve been lacquered with bubble-gum pink gloss, and he’d probably notice if I got it on my teeth, too. All my normal ways of freaking out are off limits.

This is the day of my dreams, the day I’ve planned to the letter, just so I could avoid any potential calamities that might make me freak out.

But I am freaking out. Oh, lordy, am I ever.

I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day.

This perfect day, where the sun is shining, the snow is melting, birds are singing, and the sky is the deepest blue I’ve ever seen.

But there’s a problem.

A problem in the form of a pretentious, bearded, six-foot-three wall of hot man flesh who stalks around hating the world and thinking he’s better than everyone in it.

My fiancé’s best friend. The best man, Miles Foster.

This is all his fault.

“You okay?” Eva asks.

“I am,” I insist, pushing the infernal veil out of my face for the thousandth time. “This dress is itchy as hell.”

I stand and pluck the dress up under my armpits, hoisting it over my boobs. I try to take a step but…too much fabric, in all directions. It’s a wonder I don’t drown in this sea. In this sea, or in this mess I’ve created for myself. I sit back down on the vanity stool and pout. “I’m stuck.”

In more ways than one.

She gathers handfuls of too much organza and helps me up, depositing the pile of fabric safely in my wake. I shuffle to the full-length mirror and glance at myself. I don’t look like a bride, or even a fairytale princess. I look like a prisoner who just got her death sentence.

“It’s too loose,” I whine. I never had much of a rack, and now it’s super obvious. Why did I decide to go strapless again? “I think I must’ve lost some boobage during my diet. What if the top of my dress falls down while I’m walking up the aisle?”

Eva smirks. “I’m sure Aaron’ll love the show.”

The thought makes the mimosa turn in my stomach. I used to live for what Aaron thought. Whenever I had a choice to make on something, be it a new movie coming out, or a sweater at the mall, or a new hair style, I’d think, Would Aaron like this? But I realize, as she says his name, that it doesn’t matter to me in the slightest what Aaron thinks. The only opinion I care about now is that of the man who will be standing precisely two feet to my husband-to-be’s left.

I am such an idiot.

In less than fifteen minutes, I will be marching down the stone steps outside the Midnight Lodge to a picturesque gazebo at the foot of the hills, on the arm of my father, who has socked his entire life’s savings into making this day picture perfect for his only daughter. I will take the hand of the man I’ve been attached at the hip to for over five years, ever since I met him in a dank frat cellar when I was a wide-eyed little college freshman. I will join with this man—this man I’ve spent all of my adult life with—in holy matrimony, ’til death us do part.

I will become Mrs. Aaron Eberhart.

But I know I’ll be looking past my husband-to-be to the man who, up until twelve hours ago, I’d thought I hated. Miles Foster.

And I will be wondering What if…

I wish choosing a husband was as simple as choosing a dress.

When you know, you know.

I did know, or I thought I did. Up until twelve hours ago, I thought Aaron Eberhart was my true soul mate, the one I’d happily spend the rest of my life with. That’s when things took an unexpected turn.

Right now? I don’t even know my own name.

And I have a feeling I might be making a huge mistake.

REVIEW:

It is said that love and hate are opposite sides of the same coin, and Katy Evans dives into those feelings in her latest contemporary romance, Best Man. The title seems to imply that this could be a light and breezy wedding-themed romcom, but this story isn’t that simple, and the only thing breezy about it was the weather the couple encountered.

It’s been a hot minute or two since I’ve read anything by Katy Evans, however, I’ve read the entire REAL series, and, well, that isn’t a series a romance reader ever forgets. While Best Man is not nearly as intense as any of the REAL series books were, it was still thick with the angsty emotion that Evans is known to serve up. Part enemies-to-lovers, part second-chance romance, part forbidden romance, the relationships in this book are complex and complicated. The author does a good job of sorting through the entwined histories of Miles, Aaron and Lia, although I can admit that I wanted more depth, especially from Miles. The vast majority of the book takes place in the 24 hours leading up to Aaron and Lia’s wedding, with a heavy focus on the 12-hour road-trip Lia and Miles, the best man in their wedding and Aaron’s childhood best friend, make back to Boulder to retrieve the wedding rings Aaron forget, a fairly symbolic gesture that sums up their relationship pretty accurately, for Lia’s perfect day.

Aaron and Lia ’s relationship definitely felt a bit forced to me, and that’s because it was. When it came down to it, they really were just going through the motions because that’s what they knew and what they’ve always done—it’s who they were as a couple. Instead of working on that, Lia was consumed by planning the wedding, and her sole focus was on making the wedding an absolutely perfect day, the day of her dreams. The problem was that she was overlooking the fact that her relationship with Aaron wasn’t what dreams were built on, and he wasn’t her dream man. It takes a 12-hour road trip with a man she can’t stand for her to come to terms with that reality before she can recognize what is right there in front of her.

Best Man by Katy Evans was much more emotional and angsty than I was anticipating it to be, and considering the timeline of the plot, the author really packed a tremendous amount of feeling into this fast-paced story. Brimming with those edge-of-your-seat emotions, Best Man was a twisting, turning, heart-achingly hard-fought road trip to love. Four smooches from me for Best Man by Katy Evans!

REVIEW:

I’ve read all the books in the Happy Cat series by Lili Valente and Pippa Grant, and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one. These two authors are fantastic together! Their writing styles blend smoothly, transitioning seamlessly between the two authors and coming together into a perfectly cohesive story. This story flowed so consistently, I honestly couldn’t tell who was writing what, which is exactly what I want in a collaborative effort. They clearly have compatible senses of humor, because the stuff they’ve come up with in this series have been fresh, fun and seriously funny.

Humbugged, the fourth book in the Happy Cat series, was just as charming as the other books in the series. A romantic comedy set in the wacky Southern small town of Happy Cat, and it stars the town’s resident Marine and all-around-good-guy, Clint, as the hero, and the klutzy cupcake-baking town newcomer, Noelle, as the heroine. A friends-to-lovers romance, Clint and Noelle turn the heat up this holiday season with by adding some spicy benefits to their friendship. Noelle has been burned by love, so she’s got some very distinct ideas about what she wants in a man, and she’s so sure that Clint isn’t that guy. Clint is Happy Cat’s version of Chuck Norris, well, at least according to the memes, and he lives up to every single one of them. Always there to lend a hand, he is who the townspeople call when anything is going down, something that seems to be happening a bit more frequently to Noelle. There was plenty of action in this story, along with a good bit of seasonal suspense. Of course this series wouldn’t be complete without the town’s furry and feathered friends—Nutquacker, the world’s fastest and loudest goose; Chewbaca, the llama; and George Cooney and his family of trash pandas—popping up at the worst possible moments.

Humbugged had an almost slap-stick-like quality to the comedic portion of the plot, and I was audibly laughing and grinning the whole way through it. Full of endearing side characters, a hilariously entertaining plot with a bit of a suspenseful spin to it, and a sweet, steamy romance, this amusing romantic comedy kept me happily tapping my Kindle. Humbugged by Pippa Grant and Lili Valente gets 4.5 smooches from me!

Betty Boop: I’m not offended. I feel like if you were trying to pick up a woman for BDSM play, you’d be on a different app.

Dax Powers: Whew. Thank you. Which also reminds me that I need to switch over to my Paddle Me Please app and keep up the convo there with Ms. Bend Me Over the Chair.

Betty Boop: No worries. I’ll be on Spank Me Tonight, so I guess we’ll miss each other.

Dax Powers: Good luck. I hear all the pongers hang out on Spank Me Tonight.

Betty Boop: Oh damn, you are good!

Dax Powers: Thank you. I am indeed quite good. *inserts devil emoticon*

Betty Boop: And a little cocky too?

Dax Powers: Just a little. But you know what it’s like when you’re champion of a nerd sport, Miss Badminton Champion.

Betty Boop: Hey, you’re assuming I’m a nerd.

Dax Powers: Am I wrong, Miss Badminton Champion? *smirks*

I gulp, nearly dropping my phone in the drain as I cross the street. Shitballs on fire. How do I reply to this? I glance around as if I can locate the answer on the sidewalk.

Am I Peyton? Or me? Do I remind him I’m asking for a friend? It was in the profile though. The description closed with “asking for a friend,” for Pete’s sake.

It must be obvious.
