Hunting-A Lie for a Lie-28155-CV-FT

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series comes a romantic comedy about instant attraction, second chances, and not-so-little white lies.

Sometimes I need an escape from the demands, the puck bunnies, and the notoriety that come with being an NHL team captain. I just want to be a normal guy for a few weeks. So when I leave Chicago for some peace and quiet, the last thing I expect is for a gorgeous woman to literally fall into my lap on a flight to Alaska. Even better, she has absolutely no idea who I am.

Lainey is the perfect escape from my life. My plan for seclusion becomes a monthlong sex fest punctuated with domestic bliss. But it ends just as abruptly as it began. When I’m called away on a family emergency, I realize too late that I have no way to contact Lainey.

A year later, a chance encounter throws Lainey and me together again. But I still have a lie hanging over my head, and Lainey’s keeping secrets of her own. With more than lust at stake, the truth may be our game changer.

EXCERPT:

When Lainey excuses herself to the bathroom, I rush upstairs and throw on a T-shirt. I know she said whatever makes me comfortable, but sitting around shirtless is such a douche move.

I make it back to the kitchen and pour her a fresh drink before she returns from the bathroom.

“How can I help with dinner?” Lainey drapes her sweater over the back of a chair.

And my mouth goes dry. Like I ate an entire sleeve of saltines and chased it with a tablespoon of salt. So far I’ve only seen Lainey in a giant parka or an oversize sweater. Under all that bulky fabric is one hell of a body. She’s wearing a simple white waffle shirt that conforms to her curves. A pair of dark-wash skinny jeans encase her toned legs.

I’m used to bunnies throwing themselves at me, often in questionable states of undress. I stopped getting excited about miniskirts and revealing tops a long time ago. There’s something infinitely sexier about a woman who can show off her body without actually showing it off at all.

Lainey tips her head to the side. Her teeth press into her full bottom lip. I want to do that. Suck that pouty, full lip between my teeth and bite it. I want to do a lot of other, far more explicit things than that, but a kiss seems like a good place to start.

“RJ? Is everything okay?” Her eyes dip down to my chest. I’m wearing a shirt from one of my endorsement campaigns. It afforded me the extensive renovations on this cabin a few years ago.

“Huh?” I give my head a shake. “Oh. Yeah. Everything’s good. Sorry, zoned out there for a second.”

She smiles and pushes up on her toes, her eyes twinkling—like, they legit light up, and her excitement makes her entire body vibrate. It also makes her boobs jiggle. I try to keep my eyes glued to her face. It’s not easy, though.

“I do that all the time! Sometimes my brain is busy with so many thoughts I miss entire conversations. Does that happen to you too?”

I grin. I love that she seems to say whatever is on her mind. “All the time.”

“It’s actually a helpful skill when you’re being lectured, because I can sort through stuff in my head, but it’s not so great when your supervising professor is telling you what’s wrong with your thesis.” She pulls her hair over her shoulder and finger combs it.

“I take it that’s happened to you.”

“It did. Thankfully he also emailed all his criticisms, so missing out on it the first time wasn’t that big of a deal.” She divides her hair into three sections and deftly braids it without looking at what she’s doing even once. It’s pretty damn impressive. I almost want to pull it apart so I can watch her do it all over again. “Anyway, enough about that. Let’s get started on dinner!” She nudges me out of the way so she can wash her hands. She dries them on her jeans and moves over to the fridge, opening it to check out the contents.

I kind of like that she makes herself at home. I’m used to women who expect to be catered to. It’s refreshing to meet someone who doesn’t want me to pander to her.

I start pulling things out of the fridge as she starts naming items she’ll need and set them on the counter. I manage to locate most of what she asks for.

“What about garlic? Do you have any of that?” She leans over, peering into the fridge beside me. Her braid slips over her shoulder, skimming my arm.

“Uh, maybe we could forgo the garlic?”

“Are you allergic? My oldest brother gets bloated when he eats it. It took us forever to figure out what was causing it. Sometimes I’ll still put some in when he’s coming for dinner, because it’s funny to see him look like he’s expecting.” She tips her head to the side. “Or you just don’t like garlic?”

“I like it sometimes, but it depends.”

Her brows pinch together. “On what?”

“Who I’m eating with. I mean, if I’m going out with buddies, you bet I’m gonna order the honey garlic wings, or the cheesy garlic bread, or the pasta Alfredo. But if I’m eating dinner with a pretty girl, I’m gonna pass on the garlic.”

“Oh.” She twists the end of her braid around her finger.

I hope I’m not reading things wrong and making her uncomfortable.

“Does that mean you think I’m pretty?”

That she sounds genuinely curious as to my answer is unexpected. “You see yourself in the mirror every day—what do you think?”

She averts her gaze, still playing with the end of her braid. “My eyes are too big, so I always look like I’m surprised. My nose is small, and my lips are too full, so my mouth doesn’t really fit the rest of my face.”

“Wow. I think you need a new mirror, because all I see is a whole lot of gorgeous.”

She snorts a laugh and waves me off. “Once, I took a portrait class, and we learned all about proportion and symmetry of the face. Those are just my flaws based on what I was taught.”

“Well, I’m a big fan of all your flaws, and I think they make you more beautiful, not less.”

“Thanks. I think you’re beautiful too.” She cringes. “I mean handsome. You’re very nice to look at, with or without a shirt on. When I fell in your lap on the airplane, I remember thinking, At least I fell on someone nice looking.”

“Is that so?”

“Mm-hmm.” She opens a drawer, maybe to avoid looking at me. “And as much as I was mortified when you sat beside me on the Cessna, I couldn’t complain about the view, inside or outside of the plane. That you turned out to be really nice, and just so helpful, was a great bonus.” She hands me a roll of foil. “Why don’t you wrap the potatoes? They take the longest, so we should get started on those first.”

I put the potatoes on the barbecue and let Lainey order me around. She definitely knows her way around a kitchen. When I was growing up, my mom did most of the cooking, but my dad could make a mean Saturday-morning brunch. He also made great bread, which I miss a lot.

An hour later we’re seated at the table, plates full of steak, twice-baked potatoes, and crispy brussels sprouts cooked in bacon fat. I open a bottle of red wine and offer Lainey a glass.

“Just a little bit? I’m not sure I like red wine.”

“Maybe you just haven’t had the right red wine.” I pour a little into her glass.

She picks it up and gives it a swirl, then sniffs it. “I’ve seen people do this in the movies, but I don’t really know what the point is,” she admits, then tips the glass back and takes a tentative sip. Her expression turns thoughtful; then she takes another, slightly more robust sip. “This is actually really nice. I like it. Maybe the red wine I had before was bad.”

“Maybe. Some of the cheap stuff tastes pretty awful.” I pour more into her glass before filling mine. I hold up my glass and wait for her to raise hers.

“To chance meetings.”

“To new adventures and great company to share them with.” We toast and take a sip, each smiling behind the rim.

REVIEW:

I’m relatively new to Helena Hunting’s writing, this book being the third one of hers that I’ve read, and for that, believe me, I’m kicking myself. I mean, seriously, what was I thinking waiting this long to read her work? It’s ridiculous, and I’m embarrassed and ashamed of myself. But on the upside, I have a whole lot of awesomeness to look forward to in that back catalog of hers, so at least there’s that.

A Lie for a Lie kicks off with one heck of a meet-cute that turns into a bit of a mess (literally) before it circles back to cute. Rook, or RJ as he introduces himself to Lainey, solidly endeared himself to me during that whole episode. He was so gentle and kind, and I loved that he recognized right away that this woman was different and special, and from that first moment, he handled her with care, well except for that one big honking lie of omission… Lainey was so sweet and a touch naïve at first, but she was also brave, stepping way out of her comfort zone to go on this huge adventure alone.

Their magical few weeks together is abruptly cut short, and in a truly unfortunate set of circumstances, they part ways, planning to catch up with each other later. In a heartbreaking turn of events, though, that contact doesn’t go according to plan, and they lose touch. Fast forward a year, and fate steps in to reunite them in another meet-cute scenario that isn’t nearly as cute as their first meeting. RJ’s lie explodes in that moment as he sees Lainey for the first time in a year. It turns out, though, that Lainey’s got one of her own. Summoning up all the persistence, patience and purpose he can possibly muster, RJ pursues Lainey. He desperately wants a chance to prove he’s the real deal to Lainey, and she has decide if she’s willing to put her heart on the line again.

Rooted in one of my favorite tropes, A Lie for a Lie was an utterly romantic, sweet and sexy second-chance romance. Positively brimming with emotion, Hunting delivered a story that made me laugh, swoon, sigh and sob. I loved every single step of RJ and Lainey’s journey back to each other. Five smooches from me for A Lie for a Lie by Helena Hunting!

REVIEW:

I’ve been a fan of J. Daniels since the beginning. I have read every single word she’s written, and I’ve loved them all. Daniels is a natural storyteller, and she has her own, unique and addictive voice. She writes these all-consuming, grand romances that are unputdownable stories for her readers. For this romance reader, a new release from J. Daniels is a much-anticipated, planned-around experience.

I love the Dirty Deeds series, and I’ve been looking forward to Nate’s story since we met him in Four Letter Word, the first book in the series. Daniels hoarded precious details about Nate throughout this series, doling them out sparingly to readers over the course of the previous three books. As much as I was focused on the previous stories as I was reading them, stumbling upon a detail about Nate was a treat and definitely amped up my anticipation for his story.

A widower, deeply lost in his grief, Nate is not managing his role as a father very well. It’s not that he doesn’t want to be the father that his precious, two-year-old daughter, Marley, needs, he just isn’t sure how to go about doing it. After a much-needed, albeit brutal, wake-up call, in steps an angel in the form of Jenna, a single mom of twins, Oliver and Olivia. She reaches out a hand to help Nate, and he latches on gratefully to that lifeline. Instead of condemnation or judgment, Jenna offers him kindness, patience, grace. His relief is palpable, and he doesn’t squander this opportunity. He pays attention to Jenna, and Marley responds to his attention. My heart was full watching Nate come into his own as a father.

There’s just something about a damaged hero that really does it for me, and oh boy, did my heart ache for Nate. He was haunted by his wife’s death, his was ashamed about his lack of involvement in his young daughter’s life and the fact that he had no clue how to care for her. As the owner of a busy restaurant, it was easy for him to get lost in the day-to-day running of it, but even that was taking a toll on him, and he was just overwhelmed with the constant juggling of all of it. But when Jenna offered to help him, he had no idea that he would be getting so much more than a sitter, a helper—a friend—in the process. Jenna and her kids breathed life back into Nate, and he begins to shed the grief and the guilt, and for the first time in far too long, he feels hopeful—and happiness. He struggles with even that, though, and I was on the edge of my seat as he sifted through those emotions, trying to make sense of what he was thinking, what he was feeling, and what he wanted. The problem is that more than just Nate and Jenna’s hearts are at stake here, slowly but surely everyone was becoming very invested in what was starting to look a whole lot like a family every passing day.

At its core, Down Too Deep was a story about loss, forgiveness, moving forward and starting over. Daniels never shies away from difficult topics or emotions in her stories. She doesn’t hesitate to run her readers through the wringer right along with her characters. The emotion in this book, though, positively wrecked me. WRECKED ME. I wept—crying big, loud, hiccupping sobs—while reading this book. I felt Nate’s guilt like a second skin, I felt his desperation to know even the simplest, smallest, most basic things about his daughter. But I also felt love, my goodness, so much of it, so huge, and coming from all five of them. I felt Nate’s hope bloom, his optimism surge and his heart open to possibility. I felt Jenna and her kids love for this man and his little girl. Oh yes, I felt every single heart-wrenching, tugging and mending feel that Daniels wanted me to feel here.

Not exactly a light and breezy, easy-to-read romcom, Down Too Deep was a moving, heart-breaking story richly told with depth, genuine emotion and passion. There were highs and there were lows, and as difficult as that was at times, it was worth every single step of the journey these characters had to take to find this kind of love. My own emotions were all over the place while reading this book, a true testament to the power of Daniels’ amazing writing here. A truly memorable reading experience and one that will stay with me for a long time to come, Down Too Deep by J. Daniels is a top favorite for the year, and it gets five smooches from me!

REVIEW:

One of my favorite things to do is to sit down each month with the new Lani Lynn Vale book and catch up with a group of old friends. I’ve been reading her books and these characters’ stories on a monthly basis for so many years now that I am utterly invested in them and this amazing East Texas world Vale has created. The KPD Motorcycle Patrol series is a next generation series based upon the stories of the children of the lead couples from some of Vale’s earlier series, and in the case of this book, both the hero and the heroine are children of original lead couples from The Heroes of the Dixie Wardens MC and Code 11-KPD SWAT.

Saylor Spada is the daughter of Adeline and Tiago “Kettle” Spada. Originally from Benton, Louisiana, she’s relocated to the Longview/Kilgore area to get out from under her father, and his MC’s, watch and stand on her own two feet. Lachlan Downey, Junior, or Lock, is a police officer and the son of the Kilgore SWAT team negotiator, Lachlan Downy, Senior and his wife, Memphis.

Lani kicked off this romance with her take on a meet cute – complete with a kiss-cam moment and junk punch viral video. Lock and Saylor had incredible natural chemistry, and this is about as close to insta-love as Vale gets, which is probably why the couple doesn’t see each other again for six months. Unfortunately, when they do, it’s essentially on the eve of Saylor’s move back home to Benton. Lock has to pull off a miracle to keep her in Kilgore, and much to Kettle’s chagrin, he does just that. Theirs is a bit of a whirlwind romance, and they fell hard and fast for each other. They definitely had insanely hot chemistry, but on top of that, they also adored each other and were so sweet together. Lani always includes a suspenseful element to her stories, and this part of the story seemed to involve almost everyone.

Sinners are Winners is a fantastic blend of the past and the future in Vale’s world. Full of all the heat, heart and humor I crave in Vale’s writing, this was an addictively sweet, sexy and suspenseful addition to a fantastic series. Sinners are Winners by Lani Lynn Vale. gets five smooches from me!

EXCERPT:

With my drawings in hand, I head toward the backyard, the sound of the ocean becoming more pronounced as I go. Everyone’s already gone for the day, but they left their messes behind. There’s material all over the back deck for the kitchen remodel and two new windows leaning against the siding. There’s a large dumpster in the driveway for all of the old building material, but there’s still a small pile of scrap by the back door.

I glance around quickly, confirming my guys cleaned up after themselves before heading to the very back of the property. Pink paint marks the route Rhenn will use to dig a trench and run the wiring for the new lights. When I get to the back, I can already see what they’re envisioning. There’s a small clearing with a breathtaking view of the ocean. I can practically picture the small benches or swing back here, with a few lights to illuminate the path. Solid idea in adding it, I agree, pleased to enhance this area of the yard. I make a few notes on my drawings and roll them back up.

As I get ready to turn and head back to my truck, a familiar scent blows in with the breeze. It’s gardenia and honeysuckle, and the sweet aroma reminds me of a happier time. The memories come flooding back and I hate the longing that starts deep in my chest. Closing my eyes, I let the salty breeze wash over me, fighting against the reminiscences. God, I hate I can still smell her, feel her as if she were standing right beside me.

Opening my eyes, I gaze out at the sea, wishing things could have been different. No, I’m not wishing away my son. He’s the best part of my life and I wouldn’t go back and do everything over again if it meant losing him, but wishing for…closure. Needing it, actually. I never got it. Never heard why she left in the middle of the night. Never was told what I did wrong. Never had the chance to make it right.

Maybe being back here, I’ll finally have it.

Knowing I have a ton of work to do and only a little daylight left, I slowly turn my back to the ocean, desperately looking to put some distance between me and the honeysuckle. When I turn around, I see a woman. Her long blonde hair is piled high on her head and her gorgeous hazel eyes are wide in shock. Soft pink lips are gaped open as she stands not ten feet away from me, a look of surprise and horror written all over her beautiful face. She’s as stunning as I remember in my dreams. She stands there, the house she grew up in as the backdrop, as tears fill her eyes. It’s hard to breathe and even harder to keep myself from rushing to her, taking her in my arms.

But I don’t.

I can’t.

As much as I want to, I don’t move a muscle.

The entire world has shifted.

Everything has changed.

My Kate has come home.

REVIEW:

Love and Landscape is the third book in Lacey Black’s Rockland Falls series, a spin-off of her Summer Sisters series, but you don’t have to read that series to enjoy this one. This book is a second-chance romance between first loves, Jensen Grayson, owner of a successful landscape business, and Kathryn Elliott, the girl who broke his heart with no explanation. This couple had a history going back to high school that was cut short by Kathryn’s unexplained, middle-of-the-night departure with her family. Returning to Rockland Falls 12 years later, Kathryn just wants a fresh start in the only place that’s ever felt like home.

The chemistry between Jensen and Kathryn is still there, but old wounds and hurts need to be dealt with before this couple can move forward. Not only do they also have to deal with Jensen’s nightmare of an ex, but the truth of what happened all those years ago still has to be dealt with as well. A love like theirs never really goes away, though, and Lacey masterfully takes readers along for the ride as Jensen and Kate navigate that journey back to it. Heart-tugging, emotional, sweet and romantic, this is a must-read for any second-chance romance fan.

Love and Landscape was an entertaining and sexy addition to this fantastic series, and I finished it already thinking about the next book. I need more of this town, more of this family, and I will never get enough of Lacey Black’s small town romances. Black fills her amusing, engaging stories with endearing characters and sexy-sweet romances, and I reach for her books when I want to get lost in the lives, and loves, of a big family in a small town. Five smooches from me for Love and Landscape by Lacey Black!
